Walking the Nakasendo : The 500 year old road!
foreign buy some Goods for the walk and I'm walking four and a half hours so the goal for today [Applause] let's go [Music] thank you [Music] like you can see I'm completely soaked but that's not the reason why five uh started filming again actually the bear warnings have become a little bit many apparently there should be a bear a mama bear and her cub in this area somewhere so they really really encourage people to uh encourage people to make a lot of sound while they are walking so talking to the camera whilst paying very close attention to the surroundings around me is actually a pretty smart idea at the same time when I'm not filming I'm blasting music through my speakers or listening to some podcasts or something to uh possibly scare away the the Bears which I can only imagine is best with actual Dutch music so that's what I'm using for that because it scares most people away you know but coming up on another Bridge is this the way I should go yeah I think so yeah okay ah look speaking about bear warnings there's one right here and the last one I saw was uh just after I turned on the camera so just to show you that I'm not really exaggerating just had to uh turn back a little bit apparently Apparently one of the roads I should take has been closed due to road collapse we had a similar issue yesterday nothing uh yes organized uh I have to walk around that's fine a little sad because instead of going through this what appears to be really nice bamboo forest behind me I now have to do asphalt road ah hopefully we'll be back on the right path soon [Music] almost halfway [Music] bear Bell let's go [Music] [Music] no bears no snakes only tigers the rain has stopped so I can do the last part of the journey hopefully pretty dry I'm rising about 200 meters still and then it's just going down so this is like the last climb I have to do for final descent I think I have about an hour and a half of walking left which means that made pretty good pace thank you [Music] we're starting day three now a little bit later than yesterday I got up a little late and missed my first possible train it starts my adventure because I first take the train to yabuhara and then walk from yabuhara to Inari and from narai to ihira Sawa and that would take about four hours afterwards I take the train to where I have this beautiful ryokon for tonight uh but yeah the trains don't travel here very often so I missed my train at 8 30 so I immediately have to wait until 10 30. to uh to get my next one thing to do about that gave me an extra half an hour of rest which is very very nice and I will appreciate it but it's raining again horribly today so yeah we'll get wet I guess I can only count myself very lucky there's friendly people people still exist in this in this world I went into a tourist center to uh ask where I could buy uh an umbrella like at a convenience store or something and they said ah there's sorry there's no convenience stores here I don't think you'll be able to buy anything because it's Sunday but the woman behind the counter just gave me her umbrella which I could I could use today which I'm very very grateful for because it's raining excessively thank you so much she will never see this but tonight before going to bed I will thank her again because I will be dry and it will be thanks to her thank you so much a known woman it's now up to the Tory pass let's go [Music] [Music] [Music] this is cool [Applause] right now that bridge is gonna be really really dangerous the bridge over there you can see between the trees it was very very slippery and I have no reason to believe that one won't be but crucially this one had hand railings and this one doesn't [Music] thank you just arrived in narayjuku about uh I'll look around a bit apparently it should be pretty a pretty beautiful town and then continue my hike to hirasawa Sawa and then uh there from there take the take the train to my overnight location it has gone a little bit quicker faster than expected and uh I Won't Say I'm too disappointed for that because that train ride that I should I'm supposed to take is a about three hours long so by the time I had my lunch and arrived in hirasawa and then take the train it will be probably five or six by the time I get to my hotel which is important because that's six exactly they serve dinner and you can't have dinner later than that so I have to be on time right see you when I arrive in narajuku Center all right [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] foreign [Applause] [Music] thank you foreign of course I didn't do the entire walk I just did five did five days of it uh Crossing from uh to tsumagujuku from but I did the large part of that by train because otherwise I'd be be still walking and I've been still two days away from reaching this place and then today from garu izawa to yokukawa which finishes off the walk for me um and then from there I'll take the train back to shizuka where Chaco lives today will be intense uh 15 to 20 kilometers through the Japanese Mountainside but luckily I will be descending more than I will be ascending and according to online guides this should be the most beautiful day of all so I hope to make some some good videos so see you guys later let's go to it this call Ma of the elements all right here [Music] [Music] thank you guitar but here [Music] [Music] had to look for a while what I found the new Asian Road finally back on track spend about 20 minutes I think looking for a road because it was very unclear and old Trails doesn't have this map yet so maybe I'll be the one to actually add it to it hopefully somebody else who will need this map then find the way easier while still struggling a little bit because my several detours will also be on it [Music] [Applause] [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] hike there is a not much else I could wish for right now all right taking a quick break from walking I think I'm about halfway I've done nine kilometers already and I have about seven more to go so over halfway but uh taking a quick break to eat some apple cakes and drink some juice keep up energy but up until now this hike has been really really nice ah the weather is so much better than the days before the fact that it isn't raining makes this really really nice and there has been even less a symptom I had expected um the scent has been instead of being treacherous and dangerous and steep has been really really smooth and very easy so that makes this very enjoyable feels like a forest walk in the in the Ardennes in Belgium which is really really nice and the view has been amazing you have seen it in the passing shots but wow just wow all right let's enjoy my apple cake in my juice and then we'll continue on our welcome see you guys later oh Lord foreign [Music] rock face [Music] just asked some old guys for the road it's nice to be able to myself known in Japanese just to be able to ask hey am I going the right way is this like where should I go and then they asked me out where you're from I can explain where I'm from and why I'm here and what I'm doing it's nice [Music] [Applause] [Music] so as you might remember from one of my earlier videos there's these uh horns and then in Japanese villages they used to announce lunchtime and at the end of the work day so that was one of those examples in the afternoon and evening that's fine but at 7 30 in the morning they can stick their horns where the sun doesn't shine you do notice how unfamiliar they are here with foreigners everywhere I passed by a Japanese person waiting in line or something or just working in their garden and they look up and they see it's all white men strolling by they look up and you see dries widening like almost the exact sound they make to announce their surprise and then I always answer the friendly smile and a wave and then they smile back and start laughing it's just really really cute and really nice there isn't anything else left to say I'll see you back at the station but maybe maybe uh there was something happens on the way [Music] hi everybody I just wanted to let you know that I actually Never filmed an end to this vlog um and now that I'm a month later working on editing it from my home in Auckland I've noticed that I don't have an ending to this Vlog and I just wanted to say thank you to everybody who has watched and who's enjoyed the video and post something or like some like the video um it was very nice to see the amount of attention this video got um and I just want to say thank you for that so to everybody who's enjoyed it please enjoy it more thank you bye [Applause] [Laughter]
