"I Think I Crashed Our Drone!" - Parts Of Us episode 2 - Big Norwegian Couloir
my name is Jacob Wester and I love skiing and stronger Village this winter my wife and filmer Sophia and I are back in Norway for another season of Van life and skiing throughout the winter we invite you to come along on our journey through these amazing mountains the ups and the Downs the fun and the wild plan is no plan and The Adventure Starts Now [Music] foreign [Music] it's not what you think I'm looking at probably one of the most beautiful colors I've ever seen um it's just this absolutely amazing slit in the mountain so Freudian yeah so whenever you see something like that on a Mountainside on maps that's when I get like really antsy and then you look at the gradients well that's a lot of dark purple right there which means it's like in the 50 degree range I know why you want to ride it too you're a bit jealous of last year yeah so last year um I went up in the same Zone with confident about this now no but confident is going to be fun and we both climbed the whole cool war in um because we meant to ski it together third of the way up yeah yeah it's an absolute suffer Fest type two fun but then on the halfway up I saw this like really nice hanging ramp on the left side that I wanted to ski so I ended up riding that so I climbed this entire cooler for like three hours and so this time I'm going back and I'm gonna ski it so yeah foreign [Music] Fifth Third light run oh God damn foreign [Music] all right time to go find my line should be over here this is probably it better be [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] oh my God that's so this was crazy what was I nervous about big ramp like that's what skiing's about like that is seriously that's good that's good as it gets a nice morning it is a nice morning Summits in a few minutes we're gonna start walking it's gonna be a beautiful walk but it is so cool I can't believe it those are finally starting to warm up taking some puffy layers off yes do you got enough down with you on the mountain today probably not but I have three jackets including this big one coffee pants hot lemonade and a baby sack two pairs of gloves probably more like four you should be okay probably oh it's so cold [Music] foreign what did you just do yeah good Western we decided that I was gonna shoot some scenics down here with the Drone and what do I do first time flying the Drone this year I crash it somewhere far up the mountain or rather I think I just sat it down somewhere and then he couldn't take off again it's about 550 vertical meters above us somewhere on the on the mountain so I just got an additional task not just getting a cooler today I'm also going drone hunting and then probably drone delivering and then I'm going skiing it's gonna be an interesting little extra Adventure so car is down there somewhere drone is over there somewhere yikes yikes dear husband what's the plan so my original idea for this was to take the classic approach for an equal War skin right up to it and then move pack it but since I decided to uh crash the Drone somewhere on the mountain before somewhere on that Sunny shoulder I'm gonna have to take a little different approach let's get up there and then the plan is to have Sophia connect to it from down here with the remote and fingers crossed the Drone isn't damaged we can take off from up there and then film the cooler with another battery and if that doesn't work yeah actually I think it might actually be a kind of fun ski but back down to Sofia deliver the Drone and then do the cool art the proper way at least it's sunny and of course west facing so it's gonna have Sun for many many hours but we're in for a long day I think we should be very lucky if the Drone is intact because there's two more days in the forecast with sun and powder and then like two weeks of weather yeah and we're not gonna find another drone here yeah so so I mean it's gonna be fun I mean we got some extra propellers an extra battery well it'll be fine I'm gonna trust him on this one drone Rescue Mission begins now fingers crossed I'm crossing them all right talk to you soon I love you that is very optimistic about finding it so maybe I should explain this like I'm I'm not a great skier I just happen to fall in love with a skier I love being outdoors I love ski touring I like skiing when it's good but I don't have any need at all to ski steep stuff it's just not my thing so when I work with Jacob I normally walk to the bottom of the line and then I sit here and wait for him to climb the gnarly steep stuff that films well that is why I'm here and not up there so I'm kind of an expert on staying warm today is a sunny day no wind it's an easy day but you can still see like I'm wearing a lot of layers I changed my base layer as soon as I got up here to a dry one okay I hope he finds the drum [Music] and very nice powder in the Sun and I think the Drone according to my phone the Drone is another 100 birds or so above me and I should be there in like 10 minutes 20 minutes alive so now it's been 20 minutes since I last spoke with Jacob on the radio the Sun dipped under the mount in there so we got really cold because there's a glacier just above me here so I'm trying out my new baby sack it's pretty nice except I mean there's nothing to look at there's nothing to do and there's no reception on the phone so I'm just gonna meditate or pray or both actually ended up hiking a little bit High it looks like the Drone is below me I don't mind the scavenger hunt continues downwards yeah should just be down into the right I wish I could describe this but I'm gonna have to like slowly Traverse it back and forth it's actually kind of bony oh yeah super bone actually oh what a place to lose to lose the camera gotta be careful with the sluff here so I don't actually bury the Drone wherever it may be check over here too real quick no I'm not here it's been an hour since Jacob said I'll be there in 10 minutes typical I think he uh he is at the spot right now but it's I mean mountains are big and white it's hard to find the Drone so we'll see we'll give it another hour or so I think so I know what a lot of you are thinking climbing an exposed South face under the midday sun with snow just clinging to the Steep Rocky slabs baloney this is the kind of place that could get you in serious trouble and under most circumstances it would simply be out of the question on this day however I knew the sun wouldn't get warm enough to change the snow so I felt confident enough to spend some time in this wild place foreign found it and Moment of Truth is it in one piece careful hey buddy yes and it's completely fine I found it and it's in one piece it's looking gorgeous no way that's great I actually didn't think this I'm a way more of a negative not negative but I'm more of a realistic person than Jakob yakub is very not worrying he's not a positive person but he's just he never worries about stuff I always draw the worst conclusions I always think of the worst possible thing that can happen I'm working on it but I don't I don't know why my best friend says I have a catastrophic so if there's like a number of different path then I'm just thinking about the absolute worst one it's not great when you have a husband that skis this type of oh well let's see if the Drone works so I'm gonna step back out on the ridge here where you can see me and we're gonna see if you can get the signal yeah copy that it's a yes at the bottom firing up the controller and now we're gonna see if she can start it and take off from here and fly it back down and then we're back on track and it's working now the big question is will she pick up the signal are you picking up a signal oh all right you can take off whenever you want then fly it back down I also want to tell you that the obstacle avoidance was turned off so that's why you crashed it I never thought wow that's why yeah but okay [Music] I worked out a lot better than I was hoping all right time to uh start moving back up then Hey Joe the gimbal was really acting out when I flew it down to me so I'm warming it right now it's inside here and hopefully it was just some ice or it's broken we'll see so I'm just gonna sit here in my binsect for another hour or so until Jacob makes it to the top you can't complain about the views I thought it was so much farther to walk from where I found the Drone that I expected I'm feeling it not gonna lie and all that's left is an 800 meter 45 degree cooler that I want to ski fast I mean I keep coming over rollers roller after roller and I'm like oh it has to be right after that roller and then there's another one after that and then another one and then another one made it to the top plateau it's at least there's no more uphill now I'm just gonna I'm pretty sure it's just across this next stroller but I've been saying that but I'm pretty sure this is the one I actually even think the Sun this is just getting in position so I'm not even late there are a few different approaches to how one skis big lines like this Some people prefer climbing the line before they drop in to get a good understanding of snow conditions some potential Hazard but this also puts you in dangerous way as there is nowhere to go if something happens above you I personally love the style of skiing big lines as Loops to get the line free of tracks and to see something new during the whole loud thing so I was pretty excited to find out what was in front of me it's hard to tell from here but this is it [Music] so why I'm at the top of the cold war finally [Music] took long enough but I guess the sun's still not really hitting it right if you can't see it you don't have to move I can kind of Peep into it now but it looks like we still have like maybe 10 15 20 minutes before we have light on it did you try to draw so you can't see the color that's fine I can just peep into it and I think we have another 10 15 20 minutes ago so maybe you want to test the Drone again and shoot some establishing shots of the Coulee now we're just waiting for the light to hit the cooler are then it's go time boom boom boom turns out I was in a bit of a unnecessary rush to get up here this car is west facing but it's also got this huge wall on its south side it's blocking most of the January light so it's still kind of in the shadow so that means I stand around here and get a little bit cold now so I got pretty sweaty on the way up but that's what you got to do for the shot at least the Drone works so we're happy yeah I'm gonna get ready [Applause] okay copy that girl I'm ready whenever you are ready all right and I'm dropping in five oh be not really five I guess but two while we're today thank you for saving the Drone sorry for crashing it it's okay that happened or that never happens never it's literally never happened until I decide to fly it should we uh get you a couple power turns out of here before it gets too dark just get these ideas in my head when I see them from a distance and then I can't like sleep see you down there [Music]
