welcome to the stage the president of california state university los angeles william a covino good afternoon class of 2021 there's a 2022 there getting a little anxious uh for next year i think look welcome home right welcome home we haven't seen you for a while where you been yeah right right right right it's just thrilling to have you back with us back on campus uh and and celebrating this great moment together with us i'd like to recognize ty jackson the dean of the college of business and economics who oversees the festivities for you and who authorized your graduations and ty is back there ty are you there yes there he is he's waving okay ty jackson dean of the college of business and economics and really great thanks to all of the people who have made today possible all of our university staff our faculty our students and volunteers who helped organize this commencement it takes uh it has taken dozens and dozens and dozens of people working for days and days and weeks and weeks to create this scene for us to get together and to coordinate all of the complex moving parts and stay in touch with you etc and those are the folks you see around with the white hats on some of them with white t-shirts on but but they're responsible for making this day possible so please help me thank all of them [Music] so this is your day we're here to honor and celebrate you and all that you've accomplished i also want to acknowledge the graduates who could not be here today and who are watching via live stream uh which is available all over the world so wherever you are in the world right now you are a part of this celebration as well and we congratulate you [Applause] as i hope you know earning a cal state la degree is a life-changing achievement with your degree comes a unique identity you are a university graduate and you are forever a cal state la golden eagle and cal state la golden eagles uh have a number of special qualities golden eagles are powerful and brave tenacious resilient resourceful innovative we know the value of service to others so class of 2021 this is who you are and during the pandemic you illustrated what it means to be a golden eagle life changed quickly and you were forced to adapt just as quickly and it wasn't easy i speak for all of us in the cal state l.a community all of our faculty and staff and alumni administrators and community members who are really dazzled by by your capacity to stick with it and make this happen we are all so very proud of you you didn't give up on your dream of earning a university degree you continued studying learning serving others caring for your family striving toward your goals in spite of every challenge and there were many that the pandemic caused even as the world around you seemed at times to be falling apart you worked and prepared to build a better world and that that foresight that focus on building a better world is what it means to be a golden eagle it allows us to see beyond the overwhelming circumstances of the day it allows us to see beyond the naysayers who don't think that we can overcome this who don't think that we can face and make a difference regarding homelessness and injustice and inequity and disease it sees beyond those who think well that's that's just the way it is nothing will ever change but golden eagles have some uh vision and they have some altitude they soar right and uh and and and you can see the future you're in it a future in which the world is celebrating social justice a future in which many of the challenges i mentioned are gone golden eagles are visionary forces for good in a world that desperately needs goodness you are uniquely equipped to serve and to lift up our communities you have superpowers caring for one another is a superpower compassion in the face of suffering is a superpower the knowledge and skill to make a difference in the world is your superpower marvel has the avengers but we have you the golden eagles you are the superheroes that our world needs and every superhero has an origin story right your story includes all the family and friends who are seated around you your loved ones mentors everyone who has helped and supported you on this journey those who kept you going when times were tough those who kept you believing that you could get through it those who sacrificed so that you could be here in this moment today so yes this is your moment golden eagles but it also belongs to those whose love and support helped you achieve this goal in that spirit i'd like all the parents who are with us today the mothers and fathers would you please stand all of the parents and let us thank you for all that you've done [Applause] and you remain standing remain standing and let's add the grandparents the grandparents the grandmothers and grandfathers would you also stand and the aunts and uncles and the sisters and brothers and the nieces and nephews and the spouses and partners and children and all of the friends of the class of 2021. there you are thank you so very much for all you've done to bring us to this point and for joining us today the class of 2021 also includes a number of military veterans who have served our nation with valor and then returned to earn a university degree and i want to add to that appreciation of their service that here at cal state l.a starting last february we had a mega vaccination site that was staffed almost entirely with active service and reserve military colleagues who are out there making sure that they could protect the health and safety of these communities and we actually gave about half a million doses at that vaccination sites helped by the personnel who put it all together for us so our our veterans and our active military are not only uh looking out for the health and safety of those of us right here but they're also around the world and and in the spirit of gratitude i'd like any military veteran we have here among our graduates and anyone among the friends and family who's a veteran to please stand and let us thank you any veterans there they are all right thank you thank you thank you for your service so today is i hope an unforgettable chapter in the story of your life and you're going to write the future chapters and i hope when you do so you'll never forget the faculty and staff and fellow students who were part of your journey that you'll never forget the lessons that you learned during your time here and the struggles that you overcame that you'll never forget the bravery and power and tenacity and expertise that you possess no one can take all this away from you and these powers will serve you well in the years ahead wherever you go in life remember you are a golden eagle and you will soar congratulations the university grants the baccalaureate degree with latin designations summa laude magna laude or laude to students who maintain an outstanding academic record while
