Jassan, Iraq Season 8 - Eps.29 Goodbye! Good morning Internet! It is I think, 9:15 in the morning and welcome back to the channel Welcome here in Jassan I am leaving today Mohammed is just going to ride a little bit with me. See me off And then he's going back to the border for work And then I'm going to continue to Baghdad We're just avoiding a big traffic jam You go back? Yeah Take care! Until next time Bye Goodbye! Okay, here I go again on my own Baghdad Passport Passport - Passport, yes Russian? Holland Russian? Holland - Holland I am in Baghdad So my plan is to first make it to.. .. A hotel Very stunning mosque there Okay, this is my room in Baghdad I do have a window here Which is nice Okay, I am going to explore Baghdad on foot and by taxi Because Frankie is parked quite literally inside, inside the hotel! Kind of inside the lounge room To keep her safe which is great But then it's not really handy to like take her in and out every time So I'll just leave Frankie safely there and explore the city like this, which is fine And I don't have to wear my motorbike gear either I also decided to not go and find a mechanic here in Baghdad I made a new plan. It's actually been going fine just the way Frankie is running now In the end, I decided against doing some temporary fix to some wires now And then changing the wiring loom soon anyway So I have a plan in place with Moritz to get a new wiring loom, which I can probably just put on myself But I'm not going to send it to Iraq, so I just have to last a little bit longer Uh, until I'm at a place where I can get the wiring loom And yeah, there I'm just going to change everything I think that's better than to now spend a lot of time and effort on a temporary solution Whereas in the end, it's fine as it is I'm still kind of on the road so I think all is good So that means that uh, I'm just going to explore some places in Baghdad And the first place I'm going to go to is the Al-Shaheed Monument It's quite a special place, so see if I can find a taxi Al-Shaheed - Where? Al-Shaheed Monument - Yeah Thank you It's not officially open today but they let me take a picture from the distance So this is the Martyr Monument Which was built right in the middle of the Iraq Iran War in the early 80s So that war in Iran started in 1980 so it was Saddam Hussein started a war with Iran And the war lasted from 1980 until 1988 and ultimately, I think in total more than half a million people got killed during that war And this monument was actually erected by Saddam Hussein himself during the war still So I think it was in 1982 or 1983 that this monument was built here But now of course, over time it's kind of became the symbol for all the wars that followed as well And of course, IS so a lot of Iraqi soldiers have been fighting against IS, Islamic State And so that monument is now also for those fallen soldiers Okay Hello How are you? - Good So I just had a nice cup of tea And now I'm walking, I think this is a.. part of old, old town. Old Baghdad Noraly - Noraly I think this guy is going to show me the building He's like, you want to look inside Or at least, I think that's what he said I don't really know what building this is Hello Good - Good Pretty nice view from here So yeah, in the background you can see the highrise And then here are all older buildings See It's actually a very beautiful building I don't know what this used to be but this looks like they're restoring everything here Beautiful Goodbye Okay, that was a really random encounter Okay, let's have some of this Hello Thank you So good All right, it is the dinner time now It's gotten dark already And I am going to meet someone here at this restaurant to have a dinner Um, I met her actually in Kurdistan, her name is Aya and she is from here, she's from Baghdad And she works as a local guide, so we met when I was visiting that monastery in Kurdistan And she said, oh when you come to Baghdad, let's meet up So I sent her a message and uh yeah, she invited me for dinner in this restaurant so So I'm really looking forward to seeing her again and obviously, have some good Iraqi food Hi Nice to meet you - Hi Again - Yeah again In Baghdad Ahmed - Hi My partner - Noraly, nice to see you Have a seat Oh, it's hiding underneath or not? - Yeah Ah ha With rice - With rice Ta da da - Wow! And uh, it's a Mesopotamian recipe so it's like thousands of years old recipe And as I said it's our national dish and our favorite dish, obviously It's a carp fish. You know carp fish It looks amazing So this is how it works You choose a fish So how long would it take for one fish to.. Um, it depends but from like 1 hour and a half to two 1 hour and a half to two Because you see it's not directly like very very next to the - Exactly It's like slow cooked - Yeah slow cooked There is also another way of making it, but this is not like orginal way This is a fish - Ah Some people like it this way - Then it's a bit faster Yeah This is the open style Ah, this is where they make the bread Finished already, so quickly So I had a really lovely dinner last night with Aya And now I am in a taxi on my way to meet up with her again And then we're going to explore the city a little bit more on foot I think mainly The only thing is I'm a little bit stuck in traffic Morning traffic in Baghdad it's.. it's very busy
There she is Hi So Aya is taking me to the copper district which used to be a big part of the market But unfortunately, this trade is slowly disappearing He's also making - Aye,yeah But because of war, and they are not selling that much and also because now there is like, cheaper stuff coming from China and other places - hello, how are you, how are you You can go inside it's like a hole See, this is Iraqi handmade and this is Indian Made in India - yeah The people in Iraq, like the Indian things They like it more? Over there So all of those marks are from the American invasion Bullets Grenades maybe? Like, grenades also maybe? On this building, I'm not sure but it's bullets I mean, they used a lot of stuff All sorts of weapons Oh wow! This looks amazing Thank you So we're having some kunafa ice cream which is, that's the most popular It's the most popular one right? Uh, like in this shop, yes - In this shop He kind of invented that somehow Looks amazing Kunafa and ice cream is like the best combination Oh, that's very good Oh I haven't had an ice cream in so long So what does this statue represent? Uh, it's called saving the Iraqi culture statue It's a pretty modern one Five hands representing, each one presenting a group of religion in Iraq And a group of people Kurdish, Arabs and so on And they are all trying to like, you know, save the Iraqi culture and the Iraqi history So this is the.. the idea from it - Very nice It's open! You wanna go?
