Mark and Ana go to Rio de Janeiro
[Music] welcome viewers part two here of my brazilian video diary seen here the rolling lush mountains as we traverse our way from sao paulo to rio de janeiro i'm driving i didn't film it here but we actually got crazy traffic six hour drive turned into twelve with everyone converging on carnival week in rio or as it's pronounced in portuguese personal security [Music] the sugarloaf mountains or poundasuka as they say over there this is also where they film double-o seven moonraker where jaws and james bond clash on top of the cable cars [Music] so [Music] i [Music] you [Music] [Music] my mom is afraid [Music] so [Music] this place [Music] this is lagoa rodrigo de freitas which is a lagoon just underneath the big jesus statue yes i got anna to help me with the pronunciation of that [Music] with an eight kilometer perimeter a cruise on the board i picked up in sao paulo was required as was the coconut and beer [Music] okay this folks is the imminent beginning of a block party thousands of people dressed and undressed for a once a year event carnival with the city's streets devoid of traffic and repossessed by the cariocan the party starts to heat up here we're in the upmarket suburb of leblanc from what i'm led to believe it's one of the safest suburbs in rio de janeiro is it that guy's car [Music] one hour later [Applause] [Music] [Applause] oh [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] uh [Music] oh i'm wet [Music] [Applause] what's up happy [Applause] hey [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] okay after lunch with vanessa and zejekado we wandered over to leblon beach emerging from each borough i was thankful to have someone with local knowledge of the areas i felt like i could be anywhere but then that's just the joy of travel and discovery rio was kind of like the lad of a casino you can't really see around the corner and there's always something new and eye-catching with music thumping around each turn the ocean water is salty in brazil it sticks to your skin like way more than anything in australia but the temperature is perfect nothing better than an afternoon swim in rio de janeiro oh [Laughter] here we are completely oblivious to the covert 19 outbreak that happens one year later imagine telling myself that in the past i could never have imagined it all these people we got there around about 10 pm and pulled the pin at about 3 a.m the whole thing goes to like seven in the morning so it's a long night we were exhausted but amazed [Music] lots of nudity crazy costumes you could see the big floats lined up in the nearby streets the whole idea of this is to be the best school the most glamorous and greatest dancing and the biggest spectacle it's also to get everyone down in a certain amount of time and if you're too quick you lose points and if you're too slow getting everyone through you lose points as well so it's a tricky thing to get everyone and everyone moved out through this small little streets next to the arena and here is the gate shutting on one of the schools the culmination of a whole year's work of costumes and planning and dancing and once they finish this year's run they start planning for the next year's carnival almost straight away [Music] look at that 300 meters favela on the left here is a dangerous place welcome your mom's gonna kill me hey varus the guy with backpacks i didn't think i got scared that i was recording away where are you going [Music] hi my the biggest favela here it's like a word [Music] hmm [Music] you [Music] so [Music] so [Music] you [Music] oh [Music] foreign [Music] yeah there we were yeah we were up there okay okay haunted house [Music] you can go on top of these white things can you sing it yeah yeah wow it's very famous it's like a postcard [Music] [Music] laughs [Music] oh i don't know you want to check this is a really famous tramway that goes through the neighborhood of santa teresa its tracks start on an old aqueduct called the lapper archers which was used to bring water from the hill down into the city uh [Music] [Music] my [Music] oh huh okay this is park largely which is a lush garden park with an amazing palace right under the jesus statue the humidity on this day was insane i'm from brisbane which is incredibly hot and rio is just another level above great thing it is just near the beach and they've got a pool right there because i just wanted to dive right in but what a sight this is a really cool place full cave here wow amazing this is a good drive around here that's cool is it in the car wow it's very busy [Music] so [Music] [Music] oh [Music] um [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] uh [Music] oh [Music] wow [Music] [Music] [Music] now [Music] goodbye [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] so so oh right so we started at the beach here to buy your ticket to go on the hang glider and you go up in this four four-wheel drive up this really steep jungle path you get to the top and it is high and you run off the edge uh one of the highlights of the trip for sure the instructor here is actually explaining about how the last person almost pulled his arm off hanging on while he was trying to land because he's got to flare up at the end he's like oh she's holding onto my arm and i couldn't move it the mighty town of hossenia this is actually the biggest favela in brazil or you would call it maybe a community of houses all stacked together there is a like an unspoken rule where you need to wind down your windows so people can see you if any drug dealers are looking at anyone you driving through they want to know who it is [Music] [Music] me [Music] me [Music] [Music] more [Music] [Music] this was a cool little veranda bar at the top of hossenia that was overlooking the lagoon underneath the jesus statue had a look on their website and they do some very nice new year's eve parties the place is called mirante josina [Music] this street here is part of the 1938 rio de janeiro gavia grand bridge circuit [Music] i think rio is geographically the most beautiful city in the world westerners or gringos are treated very well just be with someone who knows the safe places prepare for extreme humidity and bring a jovial vibe to match the culture [Music] so goodbye for now rio
