LISBON | A Day In Portugal's Fascinating Capital!

LISBON | A Day In Portugal's Fascinating Capital!

Show Video

good morning everyone it is day two from here  in portugal right now we're in a lisbon in a   neighborhood called alfama that's where we stay  which is considered to be the oldest neighborhood   in lisbon so we're going to be exploring this  region and some other regions in this video   today so this place is an old-fashioned place  in a old building it's 70 us dollars and this   is the view from the front of our building you  can already see like the old style buildings   the road as well so we're staying in this building  here that's our room there see how old the   place looks and this is exactly what you'd expect  from the oldest neighborhood in lisbon you can   definitely tell straight away right yeah but it's  nice i mean you feel like you are definitely in a   historical place yeah so it is very touristy  so you do get like souvenir shops and stuff   but there's loads of nice cafes like that  one there and i think we're gonna go to one   of these shows today called uh fado it's like a  traditional music from this region so the street   that we're on is called huawei sao miguel saint  michael and right next to it you already got an   epic looking old church i think that church is  called uh sao miguel so you'll be seeing many   churches around here it's also on a really nice  square as well also got another nice restaurant   over there so we're gonna have to do a lot of  walking uphill this whole place is on a hill i guess that's the only spot you  can dry your clothes around here   we see them dangling from like the buildings right  yeah like many many windows yeah with clothes yeah so everywhere around here is this  you always get these like cool little   archways little staircases little alleyways  lots of nice little plants and stuff as well   it's always a workout to walk around here   so this is quite common around this neighborhood  as well where you see these like really   old walls that pretty much look like they're from  like a castle or some sort of tower or something   old historic walls so this neighborhood's  also known for its many viewpoints   like view index where you get some awesome  views not even sure what this one is called   we didn't even know that it existed  but yeah look at those for some cool   rooftop views huge church over there really nice  cafe here we've been in this neighborhood once   before but we didn't come around this area  did we the the square is called las vegas   we didn't come to this square last time  yeah we didn't come here very lively yeah if you want a tuk-tuk tour you won't have any  problem finding one here okay i think there's more   tucked ups in southeast asia no no that's  why it's a lot yeah a nice pink one there well look at that one it's like  with the what is it like the tiles   all different styles another cool way  to get around is these uh trams here   so you'll see uh tram lines all over the place  i think we got on one last time didn't we   yeah but not around this area no no no no  other area but i think they're all around   lisbon yeah jam pack look how many people  are in there that's light transport in brazil so this right here is the most famous viewpoint  in alfama called miradoro porters dosage yeah just some other awesome views i actually like  the viewpoint from the other place more you could   see more but you got the colorful buildings closer  up on this one man we're getting lucky with the   weather carol another beautiful winter sunny day  we thought it would be cloudy and very cold but   it's actually a good very good weather for  walking yeah because yesterday was like 20   degrees and then it showed that today would be  like cloudy or rainy yeah but definitely not it's around like 15 degrees though but it  just feels really warm no wind i'm very good my we found yet again another cool little square here  this one's nice because check this out there's   some really awesome artwork here it's kind of like  the the floor goes up curved up like a ramp almost   and yeah you got like uh i guess like the floor  tiles but they made art out of it a portrait   so over here i think the artwork is called  uh calzada in tribute to the fadista which i   guess is the singer of that fado the music that  we're hoping to see later on amalia rodriguez   oh look at these buildings though beautiful i  think out of all the tile buildings blue is the   main color that they use right yes i think so yeah  like the like that one or this one i guess there's   a reason behind that i can even see more blue  ones back there tiled ones man there's so many   little rows to go down though it's hard to even  choose where to walk we're just choosing any right   yeah we're just going with the flow yeah we don't  have any specific destination just walking around uh so now we're in the upper region of  the neighborhood of alfama from what i   read this is where the rich used to live in  our farmer so yeah this is like the richer   area kind of still looks similar though but the  the roads are a lot bigger now oh check that out it's not like the little alleyways around this  but yeah actually you can tell it does look a bit   fancier this area the buildings this walkway here  as well really nice oh look beautiful fountain foreign so this is another cool find while walking  around aimlessly so this is uh igreja de gracia   beautiful churchill with a nice little cafe and  we've come across this view here miradoro which   is the complete opposite side of the city from  what we saw before way better views from this side   so you can even see the the river  back there with the big bridge   that me and carol says like the san francisco  bridge yeah yeah and you get awesome views of   the the castle over there that we went to on our  last visit really worth visiting the castle right all right there you go what was  you saying because yeah it's a very   very nice castle and also you  have like amazing views of   i think pretty much all lisbon it's a very  it's it's very worth going yeah it's one of the   best viewpoints and that's i think from the 11th  century moorish castle so it's a really big castle check this guy out jamming in the window is only upon the self politician preaches to the poor white  man you've got more than the blackstone combined so this is the miradoro the viewpoint that  we came to last time it's called santa luzia   so that at church there is a santa  lucia and we like this one last time   because it had the tiled walls as you  can see here with more music as usual so far on this side you can see the port with  the cruise ship that's actually moving isn't   it yeah i'm not sure if it's arriving or leaving  might be arriving yeah so there are cruise ships   that come to lisbon don't know where from  them so the tiles on the side of this church   uh depicting when the christians took the  castle from the moors even says the date here   11 47 yeah so it's kind of telling the story of  when they did that so there's some more tiles   here and this is the main square here in lisbon  called prasado commercial that we're going to head   to next and originally this is where the royal  palace was which is that building there but there   was a big earthquake in 1755 so that's no longer  there you're going to see when we go in in person so we're in one of the main streets now right in  the center busy street here it's like mainly a   shopping street loads of stores here and we're  looking for a place to eat we came here the   other night and yeah in the middle there's  these places where you can get a meal yeah   so literally loads of options where you can eat  around here non-stop restaurants in the middle so we found a spot to eat out here  just off that main uh shopping street   very close though so i'm gonna go for a very  portuguese dish which is the sardines i think   so pretty good price 8 euros 90. but yeah  you can get all sorts of different fish   very common here in portugal what are  you going to get i i don't know maybe yeah okay so we also got some   as a donuts some olives very popular  in uh portugal yeah yeah super tasty so we always get that for uh starters in  portugal here i got five nice chunky sardines   and it always comes with a potato here in portugal   yours looks really interesting as  well yeah what is that exactly so it's style and it has eggs like scrambled eggs and also  the potatoes how do you call this thin potatoes yummy you really like that right i love cod  fish like we've been here for i don't know   three days or two days and all of my meals  are with cod fish that's great and this is a   little thing in portuguese we call it batata  not sure how it is in english it's like a   little potato chip or something yeah i don't  even know if we have that in england so tasty yeah and sardines is also a dish that i  always eat here in portugal especially in   algarve so yeah i eat it all the time tasty it's so good there's only  like little bones in there but   i don't know i think you can just  eat the bones i usually eat them   and i think they cook it with like thick sea salt  in brazil we actually do that with the meat we use   sea salt and not like the fines yeah but it really  makes a big difference to the taste look at that so good so we just passed through the famous arch there uh so it's an absolutely gigantic archway and that  was built to commemorate the reconstruction of   lisbon after the big earthquake in 1755 absolutely  massive probably one of the biggest archways that   we've ever seen and right in front of the  arch is the famous square so this is prasado   commercial that i showed before on the tiled  image so right now i think surrounding it these   are all like government buildings although  there are restaurants all in these little   arches here and yeah this is just a super popular  spot with tourists loads of tourist groups around   here popular hangout spot as well and here in the  center of the square we have a giant statue right   there so this is of the king at the time of the  earthquake dom jose the first don joseph and his   royal palace would have been where this building  is right here so that was the palace that got   destroyed and i was reading about the earthquake  it was completely insane apparently it destroyed   like 85 of lisbon and it was one of the most  deadliest um earthquakes ever to have happened the   majority of it was uh from fire all the buildings  burnt down because back then people used candles   right so yeah the candles fell on the floor  and yeah a lot of the buildings burnt down so   obviously as you look around lisbon is just full  of beautiful historic buildings but because of the   earthquake things would have been even much older  everything that you're looking at around here is   probably from around the 18th and 19th century  yes i think so and yeah everything looks beautiful   like you said but i think that if it wasn't for  the earthquake it would be just a different kind   of buildings and architecture it would be i think  it would just be different but still nice yeah so this neighborhood that we've come to now  is called shiado you can see that store there   has the name super busy around here it  seems like another like shopping area   probably the busiest area so far out of the  mall and do some shopping carol yeah i want to   but you just want to go to the historical places so even in this neighborhood  it's all like uphill downhill   got to do a lot of walking here as well right  yeah all around the city it's uphill downhill so this place is the reason that we decided  to come to this neighborhood so we're going   to visit this uh old convent here which is now  a museum called carmo and this square is called   so just like all the other squares loads of cool  places to sit i think a lot of europe's like that   right like the squares always have a bunch of  cafes yeah when i went to paris it was just   like this and it's something that i really  like i think even more than we see in like   south america and stuff south america is more  like bars to get drunk yeah yeah it's just   different just a different vibe yeah here's more  like well people still having beers i guess but   yeah still people are still getting  drunk but it seems to be like more   cafes to have like coffee yeah and tea yeah  also because of the weather yeah that too   all right let's head into this uh convent right  here yeah so this spot right here is five euros not too bad so this convent right here is  a medieval one and it was originally built   in 1389 and the reason that it  is famous to visit now is because   look at this there is no roof at  all it's kind of been uh destroyed   so this got destroyed by the same earthquake that  i mentioned before the one in 1755 and apparently   they were going to restore it but then yeah  they just didn't so it's been left in this state   but it's kind of cool to see one that hasn't  been restored since all the others have been   so i guess these are all pieces that uh yeah  fell right that broke off from the 1300s yeah this would have been  the top of the the pillars now i still can't imagine that that it destroyed  85 percent of lisbon it must have just looked   like a war zone yeah and i think it took a lot  a long time for them to recover and rebuild   the city so yeah i think around like 100 years  to really get back to how it is right now   yeah this is crazy so i guess all the churches  were like this that were here at the time so   so this part is really cool it's actually a  part that's still uh indoor still has the roof   oh what is that like a sculpture can't really  make it out it's really weathered check out   this tomb here this is the most impressive one  says fernando the first from the 14th century   13 82. yeah because think about it because of  the earthquake we very rarely see uh portuguese   churches from this time yeah medieval times now  because all the ones obviously in south america   after the colonials are after the 1500s yeah  yeah so this is something unique for us yeah   i don't remember seeing one from  the 1300s super medieval looking so behind the convent there's this really famous  elevator here the most famous elevator in lisbon   unfortunately it's shot now usually you'll be  able to go to the rooftop but it's uh closed   so that is called elevator carmo or santa  just and it's basically just link in the upper   city over here to the lower because that's quite  a way down over there and that was built in 1902 then over here you can see the back  of the comment really well preserved music everywhere in lisbon yeah it's a very lively  city yeah it really is wow these views though man   might be one of the best like capitals to go  to for views just because of all the hills   yeah oh yeah you're right because of the hills  yeah there are many viewpoints all around the city   so it turns out that you could get the elevator  but it was like over five euros just to go down   a small distance it's just the like rooftop of  it was off limits that's all you can actually   see the walkway to the elevator here so what  is it carol like three four floors or something yeah i don't really want to pay like over 10  euros no no yeah because i think that's the price   to like the round trip but we would just use it to  go down and yeah not worth it yeah not worth it so   we're gonna head back to the alfama neighborhood  now and try and go to one of those uh is it fado   yeah yeah we're gonna try  and check out the fado music foreign oh foreign m foreign is is so that restaurant that we went to  for the fado show turned out to be   right below the place that we're staying literally  the floor below us we could hear people singing   the other nights but we didn't realize it was so  close we thought it was like around the corner or   something it didn't actually sound that loud  kind of weird especially because inside the   restaurant it was super loud we didn't really know  what to expect from the music but we definitely   didn't expect that that kind of a singing it  was almost like uh opera singing like super   powerful voices so yeah it's pretty cool and the  food was good as well and it was nice how they   made it like so dark created uh yeah pretty good  vibe so many of the bars and restaurants have um   yeah those fado shows so you don't really  have to go anywhere specific if you come to   alfama you'll just find a place easy enough and  the next video should be from the algarve we're   gonna go there to visit our parents probably only  gonna make one video because it's gonna be just   a few days there very quick so if you like this  video from lisbon just drop a like to support us   subscribe like see more videos like this one  follow us on instagram
