In conversation with Azam Jamil | The Bright Side Show | Episode 5
[Music] i've always believed that there is no source of darkness darkness is the absence of light charlie sol says professionally i couldn't pay back by setting up a hospital or a cancer hospital or i couldn't pay back by making a bridge but i can pay back by talking to about a hundred thousand kids and i don't tell them what to do i tell them what not to do because the list of what to do is miles long the list of what not to do is only five points and this is the land of jagadaku also yeah i mean you know it's a package delay and one thing that nationalism should always evolve is you presenting the history and culture of your country that will never end and it's a great conversationalist and an even better person let's meet otherwise [Music] foreign where does that come from i've always believed that there is no source of darkness darkness is the absence of light quickly it is the absence of positivity and i've always believed and your grandfather is one of my uh very early teachers so it's by design i get up in the morning and i can look at 20 things that depress me i would rather look at the one that doesn't depress me and these days after my surgery the one thing i wake up with is that i have another day and i did not die in my sleep so that's how i start every every morning so it's uh of course i have my down moments i i'm a human being but it's a very calculated attempt to make sure that negativity stays as far away and even on twitter social media one thing i'm famous for is positivity people say we've never heard you make a negative comment so my answer is negative comments 80 percent of pakistan is there to pass negative comments every day so maybe um the surgery that mentioned is his heart surgery that he had a couple of years ago but more on that a bit later so you you interact with lots of young tell us a few things in in the young people of pakistan that make you smile that makes you see but i've changed my mind you know i've uh i you know that i've dealt with youth all my life and youth are my passion um and uh they're okay they're okay uh they're until misled they're a little demotivated but then they're people like me uh what we've done uh what the wrong that we've done is that we've sat back and we've judged them and my question always is that what have you done you done and sometimes when people tell me yes this change is allowed but you can't change in the fundamental value system i tell my children foreign is so i think the youth is very uh energetic they have a lot more integrity now the common belief is let me give you a statistics from 1947 to 2019 just two years ago sccp made 96 000 companies were registered which is shameful in your entire lifetime of this country 96 000 entities were registered because [Music] and these registered so 96 000 in 70 years and 56 000 in two years that's what our youth is so over the years over decades pakistan but then there are people who pick themselves up you're a person who picks himself up how how do people do that what do we do to pick ourselves up adeel if i was to list my heartbreaks and my down moments with you you would need a two-day interview because successful side and i'm here because you have seen that successful side so so you are telling that kid that anything but perfection is not acceptable but and because he's not prepared to lose he will change seven jobs in the first eight years snake so it's a skill that i've learned and i know being a sportsman uh i used to play for pakistan i'm a national tennis champion i know my win loss ratio is 70 30. 70 is lost imran khan has lost more cricket matches than he's won right and he's the world's best so or he was one of the leading players in the world so i think falling down is not a big issue getting up is a big issue and i think we need to teach the younger generation losing is okay it's not bad to lose and yes i've had my bad moments along the line allah has been very kind he's the when i thought that everything was gone and this was the end of the world and then out of the blue and you know i once i asked you and people should know this that in the last four or five years i had done so much philanthropy and so much social work and i said where is my reward and nobody is listening to me nobody is so where is that reward i was promised and i was dejected and i remember you telling me that faisal had once said that there is nothing stronger than an idea whose time has come and you told me uh and i'm probably about 100 years older than you and you told me that your time has not come and i said excuse me i don't have much time left where is this time going to come and then one morning i woke up adil and i couldn't leave my house without 10 selfies and without people taking my autograph suddenly everything i said went viral and and i was saying the same thing for the last 30 years and nobody cared to roots for what i said and now everybody seems to listen to me aloha so you know as per your prediction the time has come and then one fine day the prime minister called me and said this is what you need to do and one day i was a normal citizen the next day i was special assistant to the prime minister minister of state so i said hey my time has come and it does come how do we teach everyone not just kids how to lose i was a i was leading 20 points to 16 and i needed one more point to win and i didn't i couldn't because i was i hurried us he beat me and i couldn't sleep for months it's been god knows 40 years i still remember that damn game so i still remember parchment table tennis we victimize that person as if that person is a bad person that person in itself in himself is a failure how do we how do we get people to learn how to lose okay if you uh i haven't mercifully ever since my surgery which was three years ago i haven't uh watched pakistan television and that is one reason you see me healthy fit and uh i can't deal with that negativity and when you do look at a talk show clip or something the one thing you notice is that regardless of the political party they are representing none of them know how to lose they just don't know how to lose uh they would wreck a relationship they would direct a career but har nani so how do we teach them you don't teach them you you accept them the biggest way what is culture you just use the word i've always been telling organizations and large organizations that you can't preach culture and you can't establish a culture by what you preach culture is set by what you tolerate uh the biggest disservice they do to their kids is that they say harner is not acceptable now what's the opposite of this that's very dangerous the opposite of this is winning at all costs now that is the most dangerous thing you can instill in a child because winning at all costs means winning at all costs because results came and my father was in office and i called him and i said daddy oh so he said pass or fail and i said pass and he hung up on me and that was the end of the conversation there was no question and there's nothing wrong with asking kitten asbs i'm just saying don't be obsessive about it every parent desires that the kid does well it's a very natural desire but if your kid gets seven a's and he gets two b's so of course sports was the easy way to teach but now you know because the wall is right next to so but that's unfortunate but uh there's still ways around it everybody can't play sport but i think we need to just do it a bit okay it's okay for your kid not to do well sometimes because in life there will be millions of times when he'll be not doing well so don't create an artificial clonish environment for him that in reality so that's that's what my comment is in a nutshell let me put you on the spot it's very easy to say i say a second tell me about your kids what do they do and have they learned knowingly or unknowingly or consciously or subconsciously winning and losing in life whatever that means absolutely i've not given my kids any yada because i had nothing to give i haven't given them any money because but the one thing i'm you know i hold my head high is that i've given them integrity and values all three of them my eldest daughter is the only masters degree holder from caesar ritz in switzerland which is one of the world's top hospitality and and i get the blame for it that thumbnail because you were hospitality i had nothing to do with it my my number two is also a girl and she's done her master's from nottingham in education and she is currently at placement in lums she works for the uh hussain school of business so suleiman school of business yeah sdsu yeah and my son the youngest is a very highly qualified mechanical engineer he went to curtin in perth and currently he's working as well as going to school he's now taking his master's degree he worked for six or seven years so they are bright kids but more importantly than bright they've got a very very uh humble head on their shoulders um and they are nice kind people which i am very proud of they are not unconditional with their love and the only thing that i feel proud about is that i take some credit okay both their mother and i uh made them into nice human beings because if fundamentally you're a nice human being a deal then everything is a result thereof you know and so they're all uh you know they're on their own and they look my daughter went to hunza long after i had retired from serena and the people of honza came and surrounded her kids so that's what i left her you know i have left her that people will respect her that's the legacy they avoid going to serena hotels because they say when we go there uh they don't charge us so it's very embarrassing so and you know and i left serena years ago and still they don't charge my children so it's very kind of them but yeah they're good kids do they have their share of faults of course they do um and and sometimes uh when the people ask me how many kids do you have and i say three and they're all for sale you know and all these things that that we face in pakistan why should they not move to england or america or canada or australia good point good point and they do let me tell you about my son when he when he graduated at that time i used to work for his highness and i met sultan mubarak who said that send your son to me and i'll put him in the abu dhabi national oil company now that's the mother of all jobs and when this guy i met him when i came back to pakistan i said guess what i said your life is made and his highness has invited you and he said i'm not leaving pakistan he just point back refuse and his mother and i were you know in a state of mini cardiac arrest you know he's he's 24 years old and he's saying no to this job and he just refused from that day to this day he's now 30 he's not even dreamt of leaving pakistan the only time he wants to leave pakistan is to do some research or some you know write a paper or something but not to work i think all three of them feel connected and i think one of the reasons they feel connected is that they've seen their father being connected to this country because i've always loved pakistan passionately you know it's always been my number one priority uh country first year romance connection hair country first subs i understand that romance i also cry when i'm traveling and i hear national anthem i also cry collected romance but but i want something more grounded name one or two or three things about this country that you love is you probably know that i have lived abroad a fair amount and i came running back home because i'm just a hopeless romantic as far as pakistan is concerned yet there are a lot of things i i love about pakistan the first thing i love about pakistan is the people not because they're the best people in the world i love them because sometimes they are the worst people in the world you know i once this guy came to my father and he said that uh bitumen you know what bitumen is was the only company that supplied it so you literally needed the prime minister safaris to get one tanker of look so this one guy came to my father and dad used to issue the thing he said is and how can you not love a country where people can gather 1 000 liters of cow pea right it's not an easy job you ask a foreigner to do this he can't do this so pakistan we are god's chosen people you know there was uh this is the land of fast this is the land of jaleb and this is the land of jagadaku also yeah i mean you know it's a package dealer topic and so like i said i i love everything about this country and then i dislike a lot of things about this country but i could uh you know i could not live abroad i have loved traveling and i've traveled all my life but if you were to tell me right now to move to canada i would not even think about it i would not even think about it not in terms of work or next milestone but but what next what next yeah autopilot just maintain present course anything in particular that you wake up in the morning and say oh yeah come there yeah yes anything that that that still drives you and pushes you in one direction or it's one day at a time you remind me of my first boss air marshal lurkhan and he taught me many things all that i am today is mostly because of him and one of the things he said that you make sure you die empty he said all that you own you know if you own one canal of land your wife and kids are going to separate it before they bury you with but the knowledge that you have doesn't belong to your wife and kids that belongs to pakistan and die empty do not take anything to the grave so my never-ending job is trying to die empty and the minute i get rid of something something else comes and then i said okay now i got to get rid of this so this is a constant challenge and i'm trying to die empty um and i have what in a rough calculation in my life so far i've taught about two and a 250 000 people and all free of cost i have not charged a dime and these include the elderly managers leaders students musicians pilots i've taught them all but i've taught them free of cost because this is my way of paying back you know i couldn't pay back by setting up a hospital or a cancer hospital or i couldn't pay back by making a bridge but i can pay back by talking to about a hundred thousand kids and telling them and i don't tell them what to do i tell them what not to do because the list of what to do is miles long the list of what not to do they say so what's the difference the difference is very simple as human beings we are genetically designed to say no to profit we get into protection in some areas you're absolutely right but don't forget that nationalism is not about raising your flag tourism i can't mention his name he said you know why i am giving him tourism and he said no sir he said because azam is driven by passion yet tourism joanna foreign nationalism is good but it will evolve the idea of nationalism 50 years ago and the idea of nationalism today is different one way nationalism comes is through sports every time the pakistan cricket team wins the world cup you're saying logie i am a pakistani and you and you see lords cricket ground full of green shirts now nobody nobody's wearing the union jack there and nobody's saying camera visa cancel so there are areas where nationalism will evolve and one thing that nationalism should always evolve is you presenting the history and culture of your country that will never end the older you grow the more the culture has values its antique value right so today we say mere god was seven thousand years old and two thousand years from now mergar is going to be 9 000 years old so yes nationalism the world is becoming one kids are connected through the internet but my children still have something to feel proud about this my son who is a professional climber still gloats over the fact how high k2 is that's his moment of pride you know and some k2's base camp is higher than any mountain in the alps where we go and relax and we put our chairs and tables and we say tell me that point where we are sitting is higher than the entire alp range in europe k2k base cam say elevation may come so yes you you need to gloat but you need to gloat about the right thing so i think it will evolve nationalism thank you for being on the show and thank you for your kind words and thank you for your positivity god bless you and stay healthy and keep doing the good work that you thank you so much for having me and god bless you too thank you [Music] bum [Music] bum
