First Impressions of Yogyakarta, Indonesia

Goodbye! Good morning everybody from Yogyakarta I arrived here last night it's in the central uh part of Java and uh it's an amazing city it's a top tourist destination here in Java so there's plenty of things to do and see but uh it's actually got a pretty funny name it's actually not any Js in it but it's Yogyakarta but it's pronounced Jogjakarta there's also a nickname that locals call called Jogja and a few quick fun facts it used to be the capital city many moons ago and it was also home uh empire back in the 17th century so plenty of history and plenty of culture to see and we're going to be seeing it all today I arrived very late last night so this is the first time I'm out during the daytime so we're going to explore the city and we'll be all along for the journey let's do it So I'm on my way now to main center town, Malioboro Street. It was about a 10 minute ride from my hotel. I was originally trying to stay in the center of town but for some reason I booked this flight and hotel very last minute literally on the same day and a lot of the places were booked out but there's plenty of home stays that you can stay at you can stay at hotels there's a Marriott that's far out near the mountainside but first impressions of the city is that it's pretty chaotic traffic in Indonesia is uh pretty bad and uh Jogja there's no exception to that but nothing like it is in Jakarta but there's all it looks very nice very nice like streets and stuff There's people uh doing like the bike carts there where you get pushed around similar to the ones that are like in Old Delhi and India it's pretty cool but the strip that we're going to Malioboro street it's like the most famous place it's where all the tourists go where all the shops are where all the good street food is and uh when I was looking at Google Images I saw horses available so hopefully we can get a horse ride take us around the city and we don't get charged three tarzan actually maybe in Indonesia will get charged like 100 tarzan because the currencies so inflated but yeah it's pretty nice so far they're like the little oh they're like motor vehicles oh we even got a tank there look at that multiple times pretty cool there we are going to 'I Love Jogja' just sign so that's like the nickname as I was saying that they use here Jogja because it's spelled y-o-g-y hey hello People are friendly here that's good. so we got a little sign now Malioboro and I think this is the the main street There we go hey three tarzan three tarzan. Another three tarzan horsey three tarzan and three tarzan then hey it's cool this is a vibe it's like the Hollywood Boulevard oh my god there are Google Images was not wrong there are so many horses here We got the uh a little shopping mart there another horsey Here is okay yeah good okay just get off here Perfect thank you very much sir all right let's go check it out I just made a quick stop to the Indo Mart to get a Red Bull get some energy and this fellow approached me and he said there's some paintings going on I'm not sure how touty this area is because now there is the exhibition art all the artist yeah we're just from 24 Dubai Sprinter from Sumatra Bali Flores you can see how to make Delhi abstract realism on the painting the art exhibition from the painter from the artist from the traditional Yogyakarta and he's here yeah only added material to the right yeah I'll go check it out but the teacher also was study in the city from the study Aboriginal art yeah and today make exhibition from the Indonesian painter yeah all right I'll go check it out right across the road I just saw over here like some cool sculptures and stuff cello cello cello go go go all right hello wow look at these cool things It's so big they're like 10 feet tall. They kinda scary but then there's also this one made out of like rope so sick Old like rope kind of made out of straw.

Oh another art school no I just I just go to art look at all this like beautiful architecture and stuff there's tons of like side streets but it is like really beautiful yes I make YouTube videos oh Sydney Sydney yeah very hot it's hot in Indonesia today where are you from around one hour around there because they have the second third floor wow and spices fruit vegetable meat chicken everything like food market yeah maybe later I go for a walk down here and I check it out whenever you pay me okay one hour is too long yeah hour five hours you can just go around with me I show you the this is fun nice to meet you guys okay let's do it see you all right maybe huh you can you can check my studio there oh you have Art Studio yeah oh it's all right I've been to a few no but I think the YouTube not you know what this place reminds me of is like Jaipur or um like Connaught place in in Delhi lots of uh people I mean they're just hustling right trying to get a commission and uh and working out here but it doesn't seem to be like too many foreign tourists here I haven't seen any it's all just been like local tourists but he's a funny guy so I walk down that main strip here that way I think we're coming to the end there's times they're like side streets and little markets that we'll check out uh they need an ATM so we'll head out to the ATM get some rupiah I think there's one uh one over there so we'll wait to cross the road but it's really nice like almost like white marble and white buildings nicely paved roads which is good but people just like enjoying the day let's see all right we're gonna have to make a run for it there we are red go on go on go on all right we crossed the road step one complete road crossed step number two is the next road here we are here's a little gap in the road quick quick check out for the motorbikes on the other side sweet all right we've got some cash look at these guys though they're like big fat people like a big fat minion there's another one down here as well it's got massive chompers massive chompers and he's got a big belly he's had too many cheese parathas until up and then there's also wow is this like a Museum look at this guy hello sir what are you reading it's pretty cool so many different like arts and crafts there's another fat guy down here we've got some cannons I remember seeing one of these at the Antique Market and it was like 25 million or something or like 9 million rupiah to buy one I think it was a little bit small on this but it'd be so cool like a cannon in your house it obviously wouldn't work but here's another guy what's up bro? oh very good I think the road is one way so you've got to go and loop around it's good that we're getting to see the city we're going right here yeah this is such a efficient way to get around the city what is the name the name so that's what they're called pictures oh in Indonesian that is all right I think we're making our way through oh this is one of the side streets so we've seen everything on the Main Street I'll just walk down one of the side streets go maybe to one of those markets and we had to check that out because obviously there's like the Main Street and then there is a lot of like side alleys that you can go down because this one people selling ice creams oh it's a double scoop of ice cream plenty of rickshaws there as well or whatever they call them here bicycle rickshaw this is really fun I've never had like any rickshaw or any auto that is just like fully open where you're at the front like you just get to see everything ahead of you it's so good having the fresh breeze on your face as well look at this man he's got a Vietnamese hat on hello back where we've where we started from and there's the two guys oh let's go chat to them very good he's okay yeah my friends yeah yeah how much Rupiah? even in these markets and stuff there are a couple people lighting up and sawdust before when I smoked um but it's just like in abundance here very good yeah that's the market done yeah please don't I give you 300 tarzans okay thank you very much have a great day thank you goodbye horsey bye-bye have a good day thank you hello are you enjoying your horse ride three tarzan this guy's selling bandung I've never heard of it but I've seen it around hello sir so so I have I'll come we just gotta cross the road it's busy why is it as soon as I want to get food it get busy Bandung I've uh I've heard of it and I've seen it it's cool this little car all right we're just gonna have to push our way through lots of traffic all right come on come on yeah all right here's the motorbikes let's go across thank you thank you hello sir this is what what is it is it meat or tapioca yeah okay and how much how much rupiah Rupiah for like five yeah they're like little 20 20 000. ten thousand okay all right I have yeah so they're like they're kind of like little dumplings is this it is good food they're kind of like the kwek kwek that I had in the Philippines oh he's loading off the sauce in there what is this oh no no no no no no hot oh ketchup yeah all right yeah a little bit oh my God a little bit he's loading it up all right so it's just like yourself in this little plastic bag how much rupiahr 10 000 okay perfect all right thank you very much sir I'll try them okay thank you hey these are the little like statues that I saw earlier before they're so tall and big but just put my wallet away we'll sit over here and uh and try them out there's so much sauces in there he just added like so much but I think they're made of like tapioca which is like a potato of sorts I had it in a Sri Lanka but um let's have a wow look at look at all the sauces in there what was that powder that you put in it's kind of like like sugar or caster sugar but they're steaming hot all right I put you guys there try it out oh that is that is boiling hot that is so hot let's try one here we go get some of the sauces on there it's steaming but you can see the orangey sauce but um sure and it's kind of it's like there's so many sauces there it's like a blend between like ketchup and all kinds of things but let's just give it a big bite um that's so hot there's like really chewy I thought it was gonna be soft in the middle what's in the middle of these it's kind of like a a chewy moment I'm really not sure what was in the middle of these but they seem like a very plain uh little snack so that's why I just so many sauces to it but they're so chewy it's like kind of dough I'm still chewing our first mouthful I want to buy it half of it to see what is on the inside all right so look at that on the inside it's that same kind of dolly butter and there's a couple of yellowy things in there as well they're a really weird texture kind of like little dough balls but very chewy but you can see I'm gonna bite into it like it all kind of unfolds hmm yeah good luck they're really nice I think my grab is over here I think he's yeah he's on his side hey hello sir oh Luke yes all right very good thank you yeah I'm ready ready to go all right everybody we are finishing up our little adventure here in uh Jogja absolutely love the city plenty of things to do around the Maliaboro street I think Maliaboro Maliaboro whatever it is uh plenty of things to do plenty of things to see plenty of things to eat so I'm really loving this city uh it's super enjoyable it's uh kind of catering towards a tourist and everyone's just really friendly here it's a good time being out here exploring tomorrow I'm going to explore more of uh the places that are open just because today's a Friday so it's a Muslim day a lot of places are closed so I think it was a little bit quieter today than it usually is over the next couple days we'll explore ore of the area so yeah we're gonna finish up the video here everybody Thank you so much for watching.
