Fat Biking Oregon's North Coast | OCT & OCBR | Bikepacking Beach Trail Tour
we're doing the Oregon Coast Trail and when we can't we're doing the Oregon coast bike route [Music] we're being crazy this is Jerry an Oregon coast local and great supporter of everything bikes and this is me along for the ride we rented a U-Haul and dropped it off in Astoria to start from there we're heading to Fort Stevens our plan is to spend our first night in Nehalem Bay the next day we'll ride to Cape Lookout on day three we should make it to Lincoln City with many amenities available for the last night we want to land in Newport ultimately we'll get to Yachats on day five where we parked the truck okay back to the adventure at hand let's go fat biking [Music] thank you [Applause] [Music] foreign so far the riding out here is perfect we have a Tailwind it's super flat super rideable with our average speed right now well 12 miles an hour on the sand on a fat pipe on a fat bike we'll see how long that lasts yeah that's first date but the weather is perfect temperatures are in the 50s and 60s forecast is pretty much like this some overcast maybe some sun later next stop Cannon Beach miles we have left don't ask that yet foreign [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] we're very dependent on the tides and so we headed out around eight this morning during low tide negative one foot tied lowest tide of the day high tide is going to be around two and it's noon right now and with a really low tide is going to come a really high tide so it's swinging back in full force and so that means some of these sections we're gonna have to go around we're not going to be able to make it through on the beach so we're hitting Silver Point right at the end of Cannon Beach right now and this doesn't look possible so we're probably gonna have to go back on 101. we're doing the Oregon Coast Trail and when we can't we're doing the Oregon coast bike route [Applause] [Music] this ain't sketchy at all [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] stopping at the Manzanita Grocery and Deli grabbing some snacks and Beverages and then heading to the Nehalem Bay Hiker Biker Campground the sun came out for us and it's been a great day 101 riding that is always a little sketchy but we made it work we're ready to camp out foreign [Music] late May weekend before Memorial weekend and we are the only ones here we'll see if anyone else shows up later but we got it all to ourselves right now fire pit firewood water pump bike repair stand lockers and even USB ports to charge your stuff that's pretty nifty I think we'll be pretty comfortable tonight [Music] thank you [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] it's been a pretty comfortable ride so far and after this we're heading to Cape mirrors it's supposed to be a pretty Scenic section so we'll see [Music] thank you foreign [Music] climbing out of that loose dry sand is uh pretty difficult but we're making it work [Music] we just got out to the beach heading towards neskowan now and Jerry just pointed out we saw there's some a bunch of tracks in here of elk there was a whole herd out here and you can see up here on the Dune they all went that way maybe we'll see him up ahead probably won't see any now he just scared them all away okay [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] foreign [Music] thank you [Applause] [Music] this has been one of my favorite snacks lately for bike rides portable tamale in a bag salty Savory a little kick a spicy it's pretty bomb oh yeah [Music] oh yeah [Music] [Applause] [Music] foreign [Music] day out here on the beach it's looking like we might have a pretty big Tailwind coming right now it's almost non-existent super low tide this morning we're just timing our rides in the morning with whatever the low tide is and pretty much in an hour will be the lowest so we're a little bit ahead of it as it rolls out [Music] foreign [Music] [Applause] [Music] thank you [Applause] [Music] foreign Coast Trail pops out we have to see if we can hike a fat bike up that [Music] well we made it up here holy crap that's a full body workout [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] well I don't know what could get more sick than this all of this has been so perfect [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] like you said having fun until you don't right yep you you know [Music] what are we doing I don't know I hope we don't have to go up this though yeah foreign [Music] [Music] cause you made me do we got the whole outdoor patio to ourselves on a Monday no one's out here foreign I got a pretty good looking veggie pizza right here and we got some cauliflower barbecue cauliflower fish taco day four [Music] super sick wow that's pretty writable that was pretty fun [Music] [Music] [Music] foreign Bike Tour and we're heading to Yachats I'm ready for another 200 miles it's been a good trip been fun a little bit of everything we put in way more miles than we had planned and we're not sad about that no it's been fun [Music] [Music] thank you [Music] we can't pass wow this is a really cool spot [Music] [Music] it's low-keys [Music] [Music] [Music] thank you [Music] that was a beautiful way to experience the Oregon coast wow it was fun it was a good route been wanting to do this for a long time I just found somebody yeah we're planning on doing the the southern section later this year so we'll see how that goes and how it Compares yeah but that was pretty fun it was [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] thank you so Jerry tell us a bit about the rig you're using this is a 2015 specialized Fatboy I've did a lot of modifications to it I put hydraulic brakes bigger rotors converted it from Two by to one by 12. they don't make this bike anymore and specialized does not make these tires anymore which are the best sand tires there are so then I've got some revolent design Fork bags and I got a design salty bag here from a sleeping bag got my tent here and all my sleeping goodies I've got a revelant design seat bag it's pretty good it holds a lot of stuff and then this is a salsa frame bag and I really like it it's for a fat bike so it's extra wide has uh lots of room and then on my down tube I've got this bag here this is where I keep all my cooking stuff so we're doing a beach ride this morning and a little Sandy but could be okay and he's riding clipless yeah look at that I have rode clipless since I was just a little guy and I'm good with it and then I just got some cheap bags there that seem to be working fine actually I like them because they're big but they're nothing fancy it's been riding pretty comfortably yeah and over here I've got my new salsa mukluk using a salsa frame bag as well I'm really liking this ortlieb waterproof quick release saddle bag goes on and off really easily and uh I put this High Vis vest on the back of it since we've been riding on 101 a lot so yeah and we're both running I think we're running the same size tires right um 26 by 4.6 yeah keep bouncing [Music]
