Bikepacking and Wild Camping The Wicklow Way
well this is what we came here for damian got a bit of a fall but [Applause] oh uh i'm a little bit normatic at the moment it doesn't look likely we're going to be able to finish the whole route okay so we're going to start the wicklow way it's 130 kilometers it is 10 to 8 at night so we're going to be doing this for a cycle for an hour or two we're going to camp just under juice mountain before we head up it that's the plan anyway um camped in again the next night and hopefully have it done by thursday evening so it's tuesday today camp tonight camp tomorrow night and be done by thursday 130 kilometers and uh all of the wick away it's drizzling already but again as usual we don't really care so we're going ahead at it and see how it goes let's see what happens so this is marley park and we're flying through it and hopefully get out of the city soon just after leaving marley park when you come out the exit this is what you see so hopefully on our way to the wilderness we'll get out of civilization a bit yeah we don't want to be here there's a nice bit of hill one to leave marley park isn't there [Music] [Music] pushing the bike up the hill it's been all uphill since we entered killing the shogu forest i think that's what it's called ever since we left marley park actually it's been all uphill so a bit tiring to start off but be aware [Music] problem but this is what we came here for [Music] um [Music] so when i had my fall i had a beer in the bag and it punctured and it was all spitting out the back of my bag is soaking beer all in it so now i have to drink it might as well drink it cheers not bad nice [Music] mhm [Music] okay so we did about how two hours three hours well yeah about two and a half hours i think yeah two and a half hours we started a quarter day was it and it's now we got here about car past ten o'clock car past ten it's now core 2211. um marley park was lovely i suggest if you're around the area have a walk around it and after that it was all uphill all uphill we didn't get into where we supposed to no actually we didn't we were meant to get to the bottom of juice mountain and we're actually on i think prince william seat is the name of this particular mountain our area which was about 10 to 15k from where we started um look we're happy enough the day was dragging on we weren't going to push on to keep going there we probably took us another hour or two to get there so russ is really worth it um otherwise it was pretty good uh so far today what do you think matt yeah yeah absolutely i think the rain kept away yeah it's a small drizzle really and it's still even now well when we got here though the midges were chronic so just remember make sure you have a net because setting up those tents was so so so annoying with the midge has been eating us but look we're here now and they've died off a bit and the night is nice damien got a bit of a fall but yeah thanks to god he's he's okay just cut my hand a little bit here nothing major uh small fall coming off attending the name of the mountain now uh the first one after uh when she walked up the mountains uh we're coming down there's all kind of rocky and bumpy and uh i was actually talking to matt and i wasn't concentrating and i just went straight over flipped and it went over on my arm really took run to the fall and just really skinned my arm a little bit nothing major everything was okay i was okay bags were intact first the beer which you might have seen so we had to drink that quick and uh yeah that's it for us tonight yeah i guess we'll see in the morning and hopefully better day tomorrow absolutely yeah night so last night was okay um we were getting absolutely f by midgets hence the midgeness and matt and uh it's been fairly chronic for midges here uh this morning couldn't even get out the tent had to cook breakfast in the tent uh yeah so just gonna pack up down head on i suppose [Music] [Music] so [Music] foreign [Music] so [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] i'm not going to cycle that it's too [Music] steep [Music] so just heading into crawl woods and on up to juice mountain yeah we were supposed to stay in around here but obviously we didn't make that we stayed way back here somewhere but i covered a nice distance today and good going so far absolutely yeah we're ready so heading off [Music] [Applause] [Music] so not much of a view of powerscourt [Music] [Music] waterfall [Music] [Music] so that's where we're supposed to camp last night but that didn't happen now we're going up that hill you can see in the distance the path it's gonna be a long slog up over the mountain on the right [Music] it's all going well for us [Music] [Music] [Music] it's been a tough day [Music] back there just came down the boardwalks absolutely excellent went very quick didn't it yeah pretty quick yeah it was fast going wasn't it [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] what [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] so [Music] so just drinking water they're walking up there so it's gonna fill up [Music] so just arrived at brusher's gap pot gonna take a few minutes some people left their bottles and cans and coke and food and then we have a lot of pots and pans under matt's feet and the air mattresses i think there [Music] people could just bring the stuff with them when they leave that will be great but we're gonna relax here for a little bit and uh take five because we are very tired it's five to five still a lot ahead a lot more to do [Music] food in glenn's block happy night beautiful starving we were absolutely starving three deer and glendalough and kappa [Music] clean the lock all right [Music] [Music] so [Music] it's only 11th hour since we started we're feeling great now ready to keep pushing why are you feeling great i feel great because we had a absolutely delicious meal where in glendale and it was really really nice what do you think damien i absolutely agree only for that we have the energy to keep going right now because had we not eaten i think we'd be both given out and it wouldn't be a pleasant experience yeah after coming up that it's just been constant uphill since we started from uh glendalough just all uphill and we haven't stopped going uphill since and we're nearly over an hour into it now all right so we're here at monaco hut um tough day today a lot of uphill a lot of pushing the bike uphill um the downhill lasts about 20 minutes the uphill lasts about two hours so no okay experience tough though very tough day uh hopefully going to finish tomorrow but we'll see how it go well we have to finish tomorrow as simple as um so that's it um we're staying here tonight in mullikore hot we've got a new buddy here i'm going to show you sam i'm going to fire you around tom sam you can say hello and introduce yourself [Laughter] where are you from sam uh where's claire and what are you doing i'm a bit of a normatic at the moment i don't know if there's any particular skill of mine that i'm honing yes i know even this crackers you've showed me man i need to refine my skills [Laughter] sam's walking the the wicklow way um he is putting a massive day today massive massive day today and uh fair play to him uh he's gonna chill out tonight with his black feet blisters um yeah so we're gonna stay here tonight and uh have a couple of beers and chill out i suppose um so that's it from us um see you in the morning i guess so good night so good sleep last night in molokar horse and with our new friend yeah sam has departed early left early this morning before we run up i could hear him shuffling around and then he went on uh just going to doubt the fire now we've got a lot of miles covered today um hopefully we do it we have to get back to the car in time so uh i guess we'll see what happens sam you forgot your onions well sam will you get them back yeah so we're just going to douse the fire now and probably head on and get on the road because it's getting late and we need to make serious tracks today so see you out there that's where we stayed last night somewhere on that side of the mountain came down here into glen mallor and now we've been pushing the bikes up the hills [Music] that's where we're headed [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] that's the joy so we stopped here at mukhlah just have something to ease um we've been discussing this and it doesn't look likely we're going to be able to finish the whole route just because the time constraints we have to be in early care before 10 o'clock to get that car otherwise it's going to be closed overnight there and uh we still have a lot to do it's like 60 kilometers still to do from here uh so it's looking unlikely at the moment but look we'll keep you updated on as we go on uh anything freeway i don't know so we'll see how it goes hope for the best where there's great board we've decided uh our course of action will probably be to any time that we stay on the road as much as we can and if the trail goes off-road that we're just going to try to stay to the road and keep going as much as we can to clinical because we still have to get to clinical and then drive back up to marley car park in the other car and that's been done before 10 o'clock and it's half fun now so and we're still a ways way ways away so uh we're going to take us some time and we'll see what happens that's it so this is our first detour after which away and on the road instead of taking it and again just to save time [Music] so we're here in clinical yeah which means end of the trip um the last bit of us we took the roads and that was just to be back here and for time it's now five o'clock and i'm glad we made the decision because it won't be creeping in here and then worrying and we would stress about trying to get to marley park before 10 o'clock to get the other car and so i think it was a good decision happy with it we got to enjoy the last few hours of the trip and we were all cycling on road that's why i didn't record too much in the last bit it was just more or less cycling on roads so not much to see um yeah so it was a fairly enjoyable trip tough very tough trip um a lot of going uphill pushing the bike uphill and then you might push the bike up for about an hour and then go downhill for about 10 minutes that would seem to be the theme of it and midges midges everywhere so there was a bit of everything really yeah oh yeah so we got off-road road single track uh forest london roads rain midges and yeah so good trip and if you're going to cyclic good luck to you because absolutely a tough trail to cycle and so best of luck if you do try it we unfortunately didn't do the whole thing but we're happy with it i'm happy with that and it's definitely worth to work to work to come in and visit give it a call yeah definitely yeah and so that's it from us uh nothing else no no no that's a nice trip thanks for watching see you next time you
