AZ Detours: For the love of Arizona and travel with Jared Dillingham | Jaime's Local Love Podcast

Show Video

hi everybody I'm your host Jamie seretta on this podcast we celebrate everything local in Arizona and if you are looking for some inspiration when it comes to traveling Arizona look no further than Jared dillingham's Instagram account my esteemed colleague here at Arizona's family I've been waiting to be on this show well the invitation was finally uh offered and accepted so thank you so much for being here J happy to be here of course anytime let's talk about your background first of all we know that you your Instagram looks incredible and you really love the airs on hiking Etc but you're from the east coast and I never thought I'd be in the desert in my life and came down here for an interview almost 20 years ago and I've never left because it's so beautiful and so unique and there is so much to do and I really I've always said this when my parents were living still in New York I said they were like well what's keeping you there what's keeping you there and I would always go back to Camelback Mountain pest like it's right there and you you're transported away from the big city right in town right in the middle of the city and I think that's so unique and you know how much I love hiking before work it's just it clears the mind it resets me for the day and um it's really part of my routine always has been since I moved here and Upstate New York is that where you gr there's plenty of hiking up there too granted did you hike there uh not as much you know my dad was always a hunter and I'd go out with him walking in the woods once in a while but it's I didn't really get into it till I moved here so when did you start adventuring and and where did this level of travel come from I I've always loved it but the big thing is it's expensive you know so even you know we always talk about our first jobs and how little we were paid even when we were you know struggling to pay the lowest bills you know our car would break you know it was impossible to fix back then with what we were making I think we were making below minimum wage when I like divided out um I know it was below minimum wage somehow and even there during those days I would scrimp and Save for road trips you know around and it was on in Montana lucky for me lucky for me in Montana so we'd take road trips all over the state and that's when I really developed a love for hiking in the wilderness um and I will say that I don't like Wildlife encounters and there are many in Montana but aside from that I just I love the trails I love the views I love the silence you know I love silence which is odd with this job but I rather interrupt more than silence you're enjoying silence golden silence is golden and you break through quite often so tell me about these Wildlife encounters that you have had well you know there's Bears all over the place up there one day um I remember and you know there's cattle roaming freerange cattle one day a big cattle truck turned over in our TV station parking lot so there were just cattle wandering around we had a herd of bison run down the Central Avenue in town that I lived in go so it became kind of a fact of life there but here you know I don't mind it's not like the stuff here the Scorpions and snakes they're not out hunting us you know what I mean so there's really nothing to be afraid they're not as big maybe as that they're not as big and looking at you at eye level like the cow might be or whatnot so after Montana where did you go I was in Spokane for a few years in Washington and which is on the border of Idaho so there's plenty of hiking over there and Hiking over towards Seattle as well but I mean there's really for me I know there's a lack of trees here but there's nothing like a desert hike I just love it so much whether it's in Southern Arizona up around paage which as you know is one of my absolute favorite places in the world whether it's hav aupai Falls I just love a desert hike I love the trails well we have to um Zone in on that one of your favorite places in the world because you have traveled the world I have we have a little Globe sitting on your desk that I got you with all these pins L pins in it yeah there are so many uh is there a continent you have not been to yet Antarctica will you be going I would love to yeah but it's hard to get there with our schedules oh yeah I need two weeks can you fill in I maybe we'll discuss offline to get you that that bucket list trip for you yeah what is it about Paige that you love so much A lot of people are going to be looking into spring and summer they want to do something local they may not even want to get on a plane this year Jared you know you've been there a couple times it is just far enough away to make it feel like a true vacation and there's enough to do there whether you're on a solo trip a friends trip a family trip I've sent um friends and relatives there from all over the country everybody loves it cuz there's something to do for everybody and you don't have to be in great shape to do any of it I mean look at Horseshoe Bend it's a very nice uh less than one mile slow gradual hike out there granted it's hot some of the time but you walk out there and you get this stunning Vista and you just stand there and you're like this is insane like the Instagram pictures social media pictures don't do it justice when you're standing there then you have all the different parts of Antelope Canyon and there are maybe five or six or seven portions of the canyon that different Navajo families have the rights to and they have opened different sections to it each one is different so if you've been to lower Antelope try Antelope Canyon X or upper Antelope Canyon or cardiac Canyon each one is different and provides a different kind of experience and then for people who are looking for more of an adventure there's a place called white pocket I think I've talked to you about it before I think you have the rock formations there are something that you will never see anywhere else on the planet they're just absolutely crazy it's BLM land so at least for now you don't need a permit or reservation for it um you do need four-wheel drive if you don't have one you have to rent one to get out there cuz it's that you rent no but I rent I rent one up there yeah exactly and you drive out there and you're transported you really feel like you're on a different planet you've never seen anything like it so I love the road trips around Arizona and one thing I'll add about Paige it's four and a half hours drive we also have a direct flight there on a small Airline called Contour it Bops it's one plane it Bops up and back between Sky Harbor and pagee a couple times a day um I've taken it a bunch times it's 45 minutes it's a gorgeous flight over the canyon and you're there you're on the ground and I will say it's one plane so if that plane has a mechanical issue the flights aren't going that day that wings wings TV show exactly that's it and there's no replacement planes so you know you take that Gamble and if a plane's down that day you just get in the car and drive up I've done that too oh wow uh I want to ask you about what happened over the summer of have suai Falls it was really really really really really hot summer and you you up there you're hiking it's a beautiful place to be tell me about that because that's when the people it's it's a bucket list sure uh people get their uh passes for that years in advance and then it's go time yeah um you know it's another place it's like an oasis I mean you've seen the pictures of have a Supai Falls if you haven't been there aren't you thinking how does this exist in the Grand Canyon right here in our Arizona the water is like iridescent it's so blue with the different minerals in it it's Crystal Clear it's pristine um and I've been up there a couple times and this time we got permits I think it was June you know what June is like in Arizona it's crazy it's crazy so we went up there and I drink a lot of water I had tons of electrolytes I kind of know what I'm doing but still I fell um victim to heat exhaustion where it basically passed out and couldn't move for hours eventually I dragged myself into the creek Havasu Creek because we've covered stories like this when firefighters here treat someone for heat exhaustion they have those kind of like a sleeping bag chocked full of ice where they cool your your body temperature down so I knew in my mind I'm like that's what I have to do I just have to cool my body temperature down so I crawled into the creek and laid into the creek for maybe 2 or 3 hours and that cooled me down but I wasn't alone because it was so hot and you're camping in a canyon between these really tall rock walls which absorb the heat all day and then kind of radiate it out at night so you never really cool your body down and it just caught up with me over 3 days so that worked for me it cooled me down I was able to hike out the next day there was an option some days not all have a supie of taking a helicopter out we went to the helicopter signup sheet that morning because you can't book a reservation for it went to the signup sheet there were 113 people ahead of me on the signup sheet so people were really feeling the heat so no matter where you go in Arizona that's something you do have to keep in mind so if you think you're drinking enough water you're you still aren't you cannot drink enough water you cannot um take in enough electrolytes if you're on kind of an extreme camping trip like that where you're hiking 10 mil a day yeah and when we have that excessive heat right here in the valley we have to just be aware of what that does to our body uh you and I like to joke about what the difference is in four hours for me and for you on a weekend for me four hours I might stretch out I'm G to turn on good morning airs and watch Kylie and Whitney oh I might p through my book I look at Phoenix magazine you're out at brunch you're out doing stuff but in four hours what has happened in your life well from four hours from where we live you can get anywhere in the state almost anywhere in the state and there are so many great road trips that I know you've been on many of them but I have many more ideas for you you know we're coming up on Spring Break Time March April into May perfect weather Statewide to travel on these road trips so okay take me on a road trip well I did a big loop in when was that maybe September into October it was on October over three days I want to say four okay yeah I think they gave me four days off so I wanted them to make the most of it how many cities were you in in each day really we we it was too much to truly enjoy everything but I felt really accomplished cuz the were these were all places that I've never really spent much time in but I've always looked at them on my list so we have this website now Arizona det.com so I wanted to fill that website with very helpful information and photos for people who are coming to Arizona whether it's spring training visitors whether it's people who are coming here in the summer cuz they get a cheap deal and want to find something to do in the Heat or whether people who are you know have friends and family who come here the rest of the year because the weather's perfect so I wanted to fill this website full of really helpful useful information that local people could use to explore new spots and also that people from around the country around the world could use when they come to Arizona using Phoenix as a base so for this one we did a loop down um Southern Arizona cuz I'll admit I always go north I love Sedona I love Cottonwood Jerome Prescot Paige I mean the list never ends Pac in that direction too so I wanted to do a loop around Southern Arizona so we went down actually we left after work so we left at 11:30 p.m. yeah and like as you would as Jared would to get just to overnight in Tucson so we can get up at 6: in the morning Tucson um and just go right away and we have to mention Matt is your travel partner a buddy of yours met in your first Market professional photographer takes the most phot of couples and families and babies midle and my dogs and um so Matt lives in Montana you know it's freezing it as we take this it is like single dig digit so he's always looking for excuses they come out here and do road trip road trip to Tucson so doing Matt in the car you're headed to Tucson what's first you know Saro National Park you know Grand Canyon gets all the attention in Arizona right felo um Saro National Park is really a cool place and it's split in two there's two sections to it one on the east side of Tucson one on the west side of Tucson and you know I've had cousins come out here I always think of my younger cousins uh who' never been to Arizona but one of them had a volleyball tournament here and they got here we got out of the car and there was a Saro standing next to the entrance of their hotel and their jaws dropped we're used to them you know we kind of take them for granted they're like whoa they're like they've never seen anything like that they were all taking photos next to it like we got to go to SAR think this is great I got thousand of them so you know you walk through Saro Nation Park it's for us to see it's a forest of these giant Saros you know and you see um you learn about how long it takes for a Saro to grow like 100 years some of them are 200 years old there are thousands of them the views are great the hiking trails there are very manageable so anyone could go on them so I think Saro is a great place uh to go through there's petroglyphs you could learn about the indigenous people who lived here so long ago as well so I would say Saro National Park is a great first stop um have you been to kartner kaverns I have not been in there Nicole kites is from Tucson and has always told me you got to go to Cartner uh it's really cool I've been to caverns and caves before this one was only discovered recently in 1974 recent memory yeah sure and it was Kept Secret for a couple decades it only become it only became a state park in 1999 oh my gosh it's brand new basically and um they have really preserved it they've really preserved it and even people who are into caves um this is the one that they want to come work at because it's called a living cave like it's still growing there's still water dripping down there's still water forming stag MIT stag tight and all that Stu yeah so and it's it's 2 and a half miles underground wow and most of it's unexplored and we as members of the public can explore about a mile of it so you have to book a tour um so you're not in a little car you're not on up to it and J looking at the hill that it's under it's just like a lump you know it doesn't look like anything interesting but these explorers who found it knew that the conditions were right in the terrain that there was a cave somewhere and sure enough they were right and they found this beautiful site and they still go crawling it's all lit beautifully for us but the experts will go crawling through these tiny crevices on their hands and knees into the pitch black not knowing what's ahead to explore parts of this cave bless they have found giant ancient horses in there a one of these giant ancient SL skeleton yes not running around what no a giant ancient sloth the remains of it like there's all this kind of crazy stuff there's a bat that's in there that is dead I think it's 10,000 years old that's preserved that became like part of the cave structure it's really cool so Cartner Caverns is uh definitely something I would recommend kids and adults is that that is that Tombstone why am I thinking that's yeah it's on the way yeah it's it's about half an hour east of Tucson so it's on the way to tombstone which is another kind of real quirky place isn't it though is it is and my dad for years would beg me every time he came out he's like we got to go to Tombstone we got to go to we went cuz he loves like the Wyatt herb stuff and I think what's interesting about Tombstone is first of all it's all free there's a big parking lot you just park there and walk through this town and you're transported back into like the 1880s it was a mining town and at one point it was one of the fastest growing cities in the entire West but then the mines flooded the town almost became a ghost town but then couple people had the idea like we should preserve this and turn it into an attraction and that's what we can all go visit today and there are a couple buildings including The Bird Cage Theater right when you walk into town that's an original that was kind of like a 247 House of debauchery no back in the day everything went big nose Kate was in charge for sure and um you can even walk around that building and see I think there's 140 bullet holes in the building that are preserved from back in the day and the OK Corral is there it's a replica but it's right next to the original site so it's it's cool to walk around and you know sometimes let's be honest some people in your group are not going to be interested in the wild west but there are breweries on site wineries coffee bars restaurants there's all kinds of stuff to keep people busy yeah it's fun to explore it is and it's really quintessential Wild West youi yeah I mean you got you got at least once yeah so after Tombstone where'd you go on your Loop well you know I love Bisby too I always say I wish Bisby was an hour closer cuz I'd be there all the time I feel like I could live in Bisby I love it there um just a quaint Charming downtown everyone is so nice and welcoming they have great restaurants they have cool hotels it's you know that was another town that almost vanished you know when the mines kind of pulled up and left and um I just love the way it's preserved it's quirky if you know they've got nightlife if you're into that they've got all these weird quirky events that go on all year um I love there's a restaurant there called Cafe Roa that our old friend Jim fry told me about years ago that is so good every time I go they've got a newer peti yes Patisserie Jacki or Patisserie Jac because my friend who lives there calls it Jac but it's spelled j a cqi and there's a line every morning at the front window of people waiting to get the amazing pastries that they bake right on site it's so good I feel like they're on a lot of lists yeah they are high well deserved yeah they're really cool and it's right downtown and come to find out one of our local Realtors here is renovating the old YMCA building a hotel when we were there put a new roof so there's a lot of investment and Renovations there as to both preserve what's there and also bring it up to sort like more modern standards did you make your way to Elgen in wine country because that's on my list let me say right off the bat I love wine I am not a wine snob you know I will drink anything I prefer a red wine um but I like going to wine tastings but at times I find them a little stuffy and sometimes and I'm not knocking on people for this but people like to be like oh you know there's a hint of strawberries and raspberry and like an aftertaste of charcoal or something like that I'm like that's great if your palette is that refined mine's not and sometimes at other wineries maybe somoma maybe like in France I feel like very underprepared I'm like I can't I don't have anything really constructive to say about this wine other than it's really good yeah in Elgen and senoa and the same is true for the verie valley Wineries and Vineyards Page Springs it's so relaxed there you no one's pretentious everyone's very friendly you know you could just go there and you can learn a lot about their wines because they're into it and they'll talk all day about what goes into the Blends and what it tastes like and what hints you should be getting um but they're also just happy to have you come in and drink with your friends and enjoy the views you know and learn about the different um businesses there because senoa and Elgen there's no real downtowns okay um it's just dotted businesses along the landscape and with the Winer The Vineyards and what makes it possible is they're at about 4500 ft 5,000 ft of elevation so they're lifted up and the soil there is a mix of like volcanic and Limestone so the soil and the elevation make it possible to grow grape vines in the middle of the Arizona desert it's crazy it is crazy but for 30 years they've been doing it and more of them keep establishing themselves and they're all different um there's one called I think it's Hops and Vines it's run by a couple of sisters it's very Whimsical the way it's set up they have this cool outdoor patio and they have some interesting food inside they have another one called run R NE wine works okay it's off the grid they're totally solar powerered everything at the winery is Off the Grid and it's right off the side of the highway it's pretty cool they have gorgeous sunset views if you're up there or down there um I would definitely recommend run for a sunset view um they have Los melic which I believe is one of the newer ones maybe 5 or six years old that one one of the original Founders um ran FNB and Scottdale the restaurant and developed this Winery called Los melic and it's very pretty the architecture there is I don't know what it's it's like it looks very Icelandic it's very like ah it cuts through the landscape kind of it's it's very industrial it's very cool and they just opened some citas in the middle of The Vineyards so you could stay there and you know there are patios private patios on each one so you just open the door and your middle of the vineyard it's really cool I haven't stayed there but I'd like to next time we're down there um there's also dos cabasas yes tyon just went our boss did he yeah it what's great about that it's so relaxing you go in there they'll tell you all about their wines but they also like serve uh they don't call them pizzas they call it something fancy yeah but they're pizzas um so it's really great theyve indoor outdoor seating it's just such a very relaxed destination like 2 and 1 half hours from Phoenix I just love it and um I wish I discovered it sooner cuz it's a perfect trip with your friends or your partner or whoever you want to go with I I need to schedule one of those yeah for this the Southern Arizona trk so are we heading North now I want to mention one other place that I don't think you've been to O chirawa National Monument oh outside of wi Cox yes so this is like far Southeastern Arizona at some point this will become another National Park um a lot of our Congressional Delegation pushing for that but it takes both houses of Congress it takes a lot of work to get it done and you know I've driven my little car down there on those bumpy bumpy dirt roads I was going down there so I I have been very close to it I don't know if I made it all the way out there but I was able to see them and it's another place that you know it's these really unique rock formations caused by volcanic activity so long ago and um the reason we all have access to it now is during the Great Depression they created something called the Civilian Conservation Corp where they sent out all these young men in their late teens early 20s who didn't have jobs they sent them out west to establish the trails and the buildings at a lot of our national monuments and national parks and at chirawa they basically built a trail system a loop system through the park to allow you to get up close to these crazy rock formations that seem to jut they're like towers that jut out of the soil if you haven't seen it I have a whole post on it on the website m um it's beautiful the hiking isn't difficult but it's um there's a payoff I mean it's something like I've never seen it anywhere before and if you don't want to hike or if you have somebody who's challenged in your group they have viewpoints that you drive to as well so when this does be right now I think they get 60,000 visitors a year as a National Monument if it becomes a national park it'll be you know a million plus a year so Now's the Time to go kind of explore that Arizona landscape before the rest of the country kind of finds out about it for the secrets out yeah exactly okay so I just want to follow along your Loop that you went on four days yeah after the chaas where'd you go then we kind of like we made our way back up basically uh toward the valley um we actually took a detour through Safford and then we went over to um Pac we took like the long Loop why the big why was that a mistake or was that just the way no it's just we had a little bit of extra time so that's what we did oht yeah okay and then did you make your way all the way up to sitting on the corner of Winslow Arizona yep we went up there I hadn't been to Winslow in years since I was there for work more than a decade ago so you know Winslow is everybody's heard of it because of the song you know it's a good day trip you know I feel like maybe a lot of people who come to Arizona be like oh can we go to Winslow is that a real place you can go up there but there are other things to do right next to Winslow because in town There's a couple restaurants couple you know you take your picture on the corner yes of course clearly hello right and then there are a couple other things to do you have meteor crater crater right down the I40 from there have you been there I don't think so it's wild to go there I mean it's the best preserved meteor crater at least in the country if not the world and you know NASA sent there at Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldren they did their training there for the Apollo missions um it's cool the way they have it set up with these um visuals that explain how it happened and then you could actually walk around part of the rim of the crater itself and look down into it I think it's like the size like 20 football fields can fit inside it you know so you can explore that for a little while and then down the road from that tour to Flagstaff is um Walnut Canyon National Monument which maybe people haven't heard of it's another like unbelievable Hidden Gem in Arizona you basically go there and people lived there I think 900 years ago down the cliffs in the Rocks they built dwellings and they lived in the dwellings like right in the side of the mountain and the little paths connected all of them and you can hike down there today and check out the way they used to live and just think how on Earth did these people live here because it snows up there you know there wasn't a whole lot protecting them like what did they grow like where was their water source during the you know you think of all these things and it's just another kind of great hiking opportunity up north Excursion there yeah so like I would say if you go to Winslow check out meteor crater check out Walnut Canyon National Monument there's plenty of stuff up there to do yeah what is your favorite Northern Arizona town you know I love Sedona yeah but that's like the obvious answer just because you know when people come here and only have a couple days they want to go to the Grand Canyon my opinion there's nothing more beautiful than Sedona right it's stun it looks like a film set every time you drive in there you're like wow wow Mason Carol's live shots Carol there it looks fake it looks fake every night it's absolutely gorgeous I will say Sedona has become so crowded you know you feel for the people who live there with the traffic situation but you know the restaurants they have the hiking trails they have they have stuff it's just a favorite place for sure so I I won't say Sedona cuz that's the obvious answer I'll say Paige I love it up there small town there's so much to do you know could check out the dam you could check out Lake Powell that's right there I still haven't been on a house boat you oh really summer PL do that love to do that there too but you know Flagstaff is so much low Observatory Flagstaff is growing up I think of Flagstaff when I was a kid oh man it is a big city and is sophisticated too have you been to the lava tubes or the lava caves that's pretty cool too right outside of Flag Staff in the forest Coconino National Forest there's like a nondescript opening in the ground it looks like some Boulders you you scramble down with a a headlamp on Pitch Black inside it's 40 degrees in there year round so it's cool in the summer warmish in the winter and you can like walk a mile back inside this lava tube that was created by volcanic activity millions of years ago it's crazy so so you kind of brushed by Arizona detours but as you do your travels you are documenting you are you and Matt Matt's taking beautiful photos uh at what the cadon because you have these Instagram worthy photos where you see the Instagram versus reality where there might be a ton of people how do you get those perfect photos taken there's something to be said for what is it um when they call the perfect glow oh the magic hour the magic hour yeah 7:00 or whenever Sunset happens to be right around Sunset that's like the perfect time it's also perfect at Sun rise that's when no Crowds Are there but you know you got to get up early and that's what you do don't you sometimes depending on the situation yeah we get up early to get that perfect kind of light and also people think when you talk about photography Matt's worst enemy is the Sun a cloudy day is perfect cuz it's nice even lighting you know sunny days it's hard to take pictures outside even of our Landscapes if it's a nice cloudy day um we love the clouds in the summer every day it's cloudy we're like clouds are here it's a little cooler right um but the clouds are a photographer's friend what do you think about moving into spring and summer with travel into Europe travel abroad where are people asking you about with chips what do you any Sage advice that you have for us um well unfortunately uh there's some over tourism in parts of Europe and some folks there don't want us anymore like the people of Barcelona are sick of the number of tourists coming from the United States and all over the world um there were some protests about that last year uh in June and early July when tourism numbers Spike a lot of cities in Europe are limiting cruise ship docking like Santorini they're limiting the number of ships Amsterdam is in the process of banning cruise ships from docking in the center part of the city at all you can't dock a cruise ship right in the central part of Venice anymore um Barcelona is restricting cruise ships as well so we're going to see some more restrictions come into place because while these countries and cities need tourism economically they have to straight the right balance because you don't want to go to a place that's jam packed because it takes away the experience for you too who spent all this money to go over there so my advice for summer travel in Europe is I have a couple pieces advice first of all try to go in August if not September September is my favorite time to travel the weather's perfect you know I get it kids are in school in September so for parents it's not realistic but someday you'll be an empty nester and you can travel in September yeah so travel in September uh because prices will go down too even last year prices were so high in June but by August they were hundreds of dollars cheaper and by September they were even lower than that so I would say try to aim for the second half of this summer um because June is so crowded abroad also remember it's summer here it's winter in the southern hemisphere so you could find deals in South America like Chile um buenos Ires Argentina is in you know 50s or 60s so nice to walk around there and uh prices are cheaper there in the summer because it's their winter yeah so I would say look at the southern Hemisphere and I'd also say get a map out of Europe and look around because you might not even think of some places that I have had wonderful times in like we everybody wants to go to Croatia we found a really inexpensive flight to the capital of Slovenia which I think is pronounced lubiana and it's right north of Croatia so we flew there Slovenia is gorgeous on its own rented a car drove down through Italy into Croatia and then back up and we spent like half the money we would have if we tried to fly into like Dubrovnik you know what I mean so get out a map of Europe and and check to see flights to different cities like for instance actually I'll tell you this summer we just booked a trip to Milan Italy uh Italy's amazing but I don't want to go to Milan but it's right on the border of Switzerland so maybe we'll drive up and we don't know what we're doing but I know I found a cheap flight to Milan so I'm like that's cheap I'm booking it so we're going to probably drive to Switzerland to hike or uh maybe take the train Italy's full of trains Spain all these countries are full of trains we'll take the train from Milan over to maybe Verona or to one of the Lakes up north or something we don't know what we're doing but we did jump on that cheap flight as soon as we saw it so when you say cheap what do you mean um I would say this summer if you see anything under $1,000 roundtrip from Phoenix that I would snag as soon as possible because by June that's going to go up to minimum 156 ,700 what about driving in another country I feel like I'd be like Mrs toads Wild Ride well it's different one of our friends was just in New Zealand where you know they drive on the opposite side of the road there she said I didn't even try and I've been to the UK a couple times I'm because of the roundabouts there you know CU there's roundabouts Ben and I know people say once you do it you'll get the hang of it pretty quickly I'm very nervous I don't know if I should tell you this but tell me uh I'm a little nervous to rent a car in Spain right now because I got a ticket there last time that I tried to pay I know I tried to pay it in my defense but the payment didn't go through and you can't do it online you have to wire money through your bank so it's this whole thing it was only like $50 so I'm like I'm just going to pay it and be and have my record clear um and it didn't go through so I have probably a warrant or something I when next time I go to rent a car there I'm nervous about it uh oh Ty is even more nervous about it so I I don't know I I'm a littleit nervous but um France is very easy we drove up along the beaches of Normandy that was amazing um you know it's it's pretty easy to drive over there it's as as you get out of the city like I wouldn't want to drive in central Paris or Rome but I'd rent a car outside the city and drive from there to go to your next destination MH for sure you started doing your travel segment about when no one was traveling yeah during Co tell me about that here at a family we were we were in a dark time do you remember I mean for that I don't think we saw each other for a year in 202 it was the dark days at Arizona's family and you know part of the magic of good morning Arizona is the interaction between the anchors and the guests and we couldn't have guests in the studio so I was you know all we covered was the pandemic and politics that's it I was like I need something else yeah and I was like I have access to the studio so why don't I go in and interact with the anchors it was you and Kylie right and um I was like I can go do a travel segment at least we can interact with each other we can't really travel right now but we can talk about future travel and future ideas just to talk about something else um so that's where it started and I still do it a couple times a month yeah on Sunday mornings You' come in on your time off sometimes I tape them you little rascal let's let's let's dish on working here at a family all right who who do you want to talk about you favorite topic I'm the most boring one here believe me well not really because as as we tell the people you do allow me to track you on my find my phone Paul always brings that up sometimes he brings it up on TV and I feel like people watching are like what yes wear that clo um but it you're very often at home or on another continent which is one of our running home well I mean you're probably on the computer booking your next trip um but you said you've been with the company for 20 years or more Yep 20 years congratulations thanks how many for you uh I'm in my 12th year oh so it'll be 12 soon and we worked very different roles throughout our time here you and I were weekend anchors on the morning show until I got fired my one of my favorite jobs ever here and I was told this is not working you got promoted you got promoted to weekday evening I will say the ratings on that show when we were together that was the most watched newscast of any channel of any time period in this market during the time so I think it was a highlight of my time here for sure I didn't want it to end but you know I don't make the decisions you got plucked away from me and I was quite bitter I'm pretty sure I called out sick in protest and so now today we still even though we're on different schedules it is widely known that we always connect for our daily coffee chat yep and so we meet in the kitchen about you know the witching hour if you call it right before the 3:00 show where I have to get ready and people know that they can wander in we like to call them our special guests Our Guest when people come to get well sometimes they interject in our conversation they're welcome too we ask some question usually theying how they likeing here all that fun stuff so we really are very blessed that this is such a cool place to work it's weird that we all get along you know I don't think that's normal and that's why I'm not leaving ever like I mean I feel like everybody's a sibling you know I mean Nicole and I spend a lot of time together like we sit next to each other we anchor for hours together we're like siblings you know we can get into a little spat about something but you move on Yeta the same way Vanessa the same Royal is like our older brother you know what I mean and Paul and Cene we all just get along so well yeah we're we're very lucky we have a great time here and and we certainly love following your travels so tell us how we can follow your travels how we can learn more information so the big website is Jareds detour. comom that's where we have stuff from all over the world but because I live here and I love it here so much I wanted something specific for Arizona so I built another one with Matt this year called Arizona detours um that I think people will have a much easier time navigating if they're looking to come here and see stuff in our state so Jareds detour. Arizona detour. comom either one and if you can't find something then just search for it in the search bar up top it'll it'll pop up we're going to add the link below uh in the summary of this podcast and uh I think it's time to go get our coffee Jared all right I would like to say um there are three cameras on you and I only have one my podcast that's fair enough thank you Jared okay thanks for listening to Dam's local love the podcast I'm host Jamie seretta our technician is Tom heidinger our editors are Lorraine sheering and Gina Koy do you know a business worth the of some local love email me at jaretta aam.com follow us at facebook.com/
