we're here to find out which is the best sports  bike of 2007. now we're here to do our 2008   thousand cc group test for 2009. welcome  to our thousand cc group test on michael   knees and powers a thousand cc superbikes which  brings us to 2015 it's the year of the superbike   welcome to mcn and our 2017 superbike  shootout really changed that much for 2019 um so so superbike test sicily sicily superbike shootout welcome to mcn now first of all i want to  thank you for clicking on this video because   it's all about superbikes and let's  face it nowadays super bikes have become   pretty irrelevant bikes like these  are too powerful for the road they're   too difficult to ride for most people around the  track and they become really really expensive so   for me to stand here and give you a really  worthy superbike comparison test nowadays   seems a little bit daft so that's not what i'm  going to do because these bikes are so good i mean   can you remember probably in even in the naughties  with superbikes were at the height of their powers   manufacturers made bikes that could easily be  improved you know you take an r1 or a zx10 you   could put suspension on it tyres brakes and you'd  make that bike a lot lot better but nowadays with   bike lights bikes like these you just you can't  improve them unless you're going to go racing   these are absolutely perfect for the road and  track days and we've seen that ourselves over   the last few years when manufacturers bring their  races along to to join us on press launches i mean   i've seen alex lowe's around her to a 143 on a bog  stock r1 which is only a couple of seconds off his   world superbike time early uh in the year there  was jorge martin on a 2022 panigale v4s again did   a 143 so these bikes have got massive potential  so for us to say the forks are better on this one   the power's better on that one it honestly is  irrelevant but that doesn't mean we shouldn't   celebrate them and shouldn't test them and  we've picked three of the kind of apex superbike   predators there are a lot more the japanese  bikes are missing from this lineup and but to   be honest we wanted to focus on the best because  the way we perceive superbikes now aren't kind of   everyday motorcycles because there's so much more  choice out there superbikes really now are the   the ultimate expression of speed and power and  handling and we reckon these three fit the bill   perfectly so we've had lockdown between now and  our last superbike test and we actually tested the   same three bikes and in that test the s thousand  rr m package one but now we've got actually three   different bikes because the s thousand rr we've  now chosen the m thousand rr we've got the latest   ducati v4 sp2 and the latest incarnation of the  aprilia rsv4 factory so you can switch off now   when i tell you the price of these bikes they're  insanely expensive so this is the most expensive   this is about 34 000 pounds this is the latest  sp2 so it's based on the 2022 v4s so that bike   ducati of making their superbikes easier to  ride year on year and the latest incarnation   of the panigale isn't the angry beast it used to  be it's actually really flattering for the rider   so this takes that a step further so it's got  carbon fiber wheels it's got stronger brakes it's   got different electronics it's painted in winter  test colors with this matte black finish with the   brushed aluminium tank all the bells and whistles  it's about seven grand more than the standard v4s   so this better be good then we've got the  m1000rr so this basically was built for   homologate this bike for superbike racing bmw kind  of reached a glass ceiling with the s thousand r   for racing and so they decided to make this bike  so this this bike here is a about nine grand more   than a nest house an rrm package um but it's not  a lot different really to ride in standard trim   the engine has been made it's got a little  bit more power all of these are 200 and stupid   bhp um it's got a bit more power but the engine  is more tunable so it's stronger and it um when   the superbike teams go to work on this bike they  can tune it to a high level and it won't blow its   brains out and it's also got a different chassis  geometry as well so in racing the bike's much more   stable as a road bike the the big differences are  the fact it's got wings it hasn't got electronic   suspension like these two bikes but the idea  behind that is that you chuck the suspension away   and put your fancy race stuff on anyway you've got  bigger brakes you've got an underslung rear brake   lots of little detail changes to make it  bmw's first m bike and if you haven't got 30   odd grand to spend on a motorbike and who has  you could go for the bargain basement aprilia   which costs just 23 000 pounds so again this is  completely out of reach of everybody completely   irrelevant but completely brilliant i mean this  bike's been around since 2009 so it's a golden   oldie now really um it evolved into an 1100 from a  thousand in 2019 that's when it really came of age   and last year in 2021 it got a load of significant  updates just to to bring it up another level most   notably um with its aero under slung swing arm new  electronics new imu new dash new riding position   so this has really come of age as well we've  always loved the aprilia but not giving the   game away now we've always said that it's very  very cramped so you know if you're tall like me   no matter how good this bike is it's  not going to be the most comfortable   there anyway what we're going to do is put these  bikes head to head it doesn't matter what the   winner is because these are all insanely powerful  and it's insanely exotic it doesn't really matter   it's irrelevant but we're going to ride them  anyway so we're going to ride them on the track   more to tell you their characters really and how  easy or difficult or exciting or not they are   rather than lap times but we are going  to give you some lap times as well   um and then we're going to ride them on the road  because really bites like this probably will live   on the road most of the time anyway so we're going  to see how easy they are to live with let's go hey oh ah we've been riding these bikes around the track  all day and i mean flipping heck where'd you even   start with these things without getting a bit  too nerdy and a bit too worthy i mean the first   thing to say is i'm probably not qualified to  really even assess the performance on these bikes   it's up there you need a racer so you know  i'm not going to talk about the fork feel   or what it's like right on the edge of traction  because i'd be lying if i told you that especially   um that these bikes have all got control tyres on  so they're not just any old control tyres they're   pirelli superbike slicks so flipping good ones so  you've got an se1 compound front and se zero soft   rear and with these tyres on these bikes don't  move um so much so that even though they've all   got flash harry electronics you don't feel  the slide control or the traction control   you've just got too much grip so these bikes  aren't kind of separated by their electronics   the only electronics you feel really  are the quick shifters and they're good   you feel the riding modes and they're all perfect  um anti-wheelie they're all great so you know   whichever one you choose here is not going to be  down to electronics and the other thing i'd say   is where we are today we're in perigoosa in  sicily a beautiful circuit that goes through   some woods around a big lake it's like  a mallory on acid and and it suits these   bites perfectly because you can really let them  off their leashes and they're ridiculously fast   so the thing i would say is depending on what kind  of ride you are there is a bike here to suit you   so the aprilia is just the engine the handling  the braking is absolutely superb but like i said   at the beginning it is a very smooth so it's only  really going to suit smaller riders and and if you   are of a more diminutive stature i think you're  really really going to like it you're going to   save a load of money over these bikes i mean the  standout points for this is just it's ride quality   the torque out corners it's not actually that  stable all rs4s have got this thing where they   kind of sit down on their rear shock and they're  a little bit wobbly but even though it's got   electronic suspension i'm sure you could dial that  out but it's not a criticism you just got to kind   of ride around it a little bit then we've got the  m thousand rr so this bike feels very familiar to   anyone who's had a japanese superbike in the  past this could be a zx10 gsxr fireblade and   r1 it's that kind of bike that feels very very  familiar compared to the other two and so it's   very very easy to ride the standout points on  this is handling it's stability braking power is   the best of the bunch in standard trim like this  even though these have got posh brembo calipers   the abs gives this bike lots of feel where it  kind of robs the feel of the other two um but what   i would say is a 30 gram motorbike really this  bike is bought for um by race teams to go racing   and i personally think the s thousand rr is better  because the engine has got a little bit more grunt   this kind of feels quite flat when you're riding  especially compared to the 1100s because the 1100s   have got more torque and more cubes but you know  you've got to scream this bike and you've got   to be really on your game to get the best out  of this bike um as for the wings incidentally   whether they work or not it's hard to say because  all these bikes are designed not to wheely   through wings and fuel mapping electronics  all the rest of it all you can say they're   not wheeling monsters so the wings must be doing  something and motogp bikes are absolutely little   with them so they've got to work and then we've  got the panigale so ever since it came out it's   always been the superbike beast it's very stiff  very powerful very hard to ride if you're not   a professional racer i mean this panigale is  designed for track riders that break an angle   into a corner so you haven't got any lean angle  so you're using it's super powers it's got mega   strong frame so it's really good underbreaking  it's designed just to be whacked on its side for   the shortest amount of time possible and then  it's got mega stability on the on the power   so it's a point and squirt bike and if you try and  ride it like 600 like most riders do me included   because you haven't grown up riding grand prix  bikes and it can get a little bit out of shape but   the cat had realized that people normal people  were going to be riding this so they've they tamed   it down and over the years the panagia has become  much much easier to ride but still really fast   the thing i like about hannah gary the most not  just because it looks brutal and it looks menacing   and it sounds fantastic although the v4 more  conventional sounding v4 and this sounds great   but it's roomy so tall rider like me  can just really get on with it well   the electronics just dumb down the power when you  need it and give you the power when you need it   it's got so much grip it's just it's got a  bigger screen than the other two so you can   get right in under it the the ergonomics  are much much better for track riding so   out of the three i'd personally choose the  panigale it's kind of the most it gives you   the biggest wow factor but that's not to say  these other two bites aren't incredibly fast   so that's our track section done and we're going  to see now what these beasts are like on the road mmm welcome to the road section  of our relevant superbike test so to put these bikes on a level playing field  again we've put control tyres on them all   this time they're pirelli diablo rosso 4 corsa and  they're a step between a sports tyre and a track   day tyre and for these type of bikes for the road  even on track days they're fantastic so so we're   not testing the tyres here we're just testing the  bikes um with my sensible head on what i would say   and it carries on from the whole thread of this  video really that these bikes are way too much   for the road which is obvious isn't it and i would  say that the super naked versions of all of these   bikes so the street fighter the tuono the s  thousand r are all a million percent better   to actually ride on the road than these things  because all the weights on your wrists you've got   cramp cramped foot pegs you've got engines where  all the power is right up the top so you know   super nakeds are better than these things but what  are these bikes like on the road because you know   as good as they are around track is it's hard to  take a 30 odd grand motorcycle on a track day um   because of all the risks involved so as road bikes  hands down this is the best as you'd expect it's   a bmw bmw make touring bikes and adventure bikes  and that dna goes in their sports bikes as well   so like on the track it's very easy to understand  just to jump on it feels very conventional   um it's got heated grips it's got cruise  control it's got a fantastic color dash   it's very stable it's quite comfortable it's just  very very easy to live with and because it's the   m you've got all this flasharry carbon fiber  and you know when you pull up a bike meeting   or something like that it has got presence  it's a lovely lovely thing and incidentally   it was second fastest around the track so that's  not bad going is it the ducati was the quickest   and then the aprilia came in third but they're  all really really close so the beam is the best   road bike all day long it's the one i would choose  if i was going to do a long journey um but these   two feel like race bikes on the road so they're a  little bit uncompromising the aprilia has actually   become more friendly in its latest incarnation  and for a tall rider like me the extra room   you've got with the foot pegs and the seat is  very very useful and the engine is very plush   it's very smooth and the the sound of it  is just incredible you can't get enough of   the way it wails through that pipe and  it's induction ward it's just addictive um the suspension's really nice but it still is  a little bit cramped and it still is a little bit   risky and then the ducati the ducati like we said  at the beginning has really changed over the years   and it's become a lot more of a friendly road  bike um and even now i'm surprised every time i   jump on that kind of muscle memory makes me think  that this is quite a sort of harsh angry beast   but ducati has smoothed all the all the  rough edges off this bike it's incredible so   the suspension is just beautifully plush  the power delivery isn't spiky anymore   the riding position is actually quite roomy  it's got a lot of seats a peg room the bars   are really wide and splayed it tolerates  road riding a lot better than it did   so that's what they're like on the road but really  we're judging this test on different criteria   we're not saying which is the best road  bike because really none of these are   and like i said the super naked versions are  better and in actual fact the lower spec versions   of all these bikes are just as good so bass  panigale doesn't feel too different to that   the bass rsv doesn't feel too different and for  almost half the price you can get the bass s   thousand rr and it's almost just as good so these  bikes are more about the ultimate in kind of super   bike decadence and the the way they make you  feel and you know if you're fortunate enough to   be able to afford any of these machines you want  something that when you open the garage door it's   just going to absolutely knock your socks off and  this doesn't do it as good as it is the bmw isn't   really special enough even though in the flesh  it looks a lot better in pictures and it probably   looks better than it does on video especially  with all the nice carbon fiber but for 30 grand   i'd want at least electronic olins not because it  works any better but just for the bling and that's   what these bikes are about isn't it so although  this is a fantastic bike it's not the best   it's slightly better than the aprilia though the  aprilia was the slowest on track it kind of feels   a little bit dated around the edges and although  it is a lot cheaper than these two bikes you know   for the ultimate superbike the aprilia isn't it as  good as it is which leaves really the winner which   is the ducati the cat is fastest around the track  it's evolved over the last few years to become   friendly on the road but most of all it's  just a seriously impressive superbike you   can't get enough of looking at it at it you  can't get enough of riding it on a circuit   on the road it just makes you feel special the  engine the pedigree the way it handles the way   it rides the way it stops everything is just tick  tick tick tick tick and it is obscenely expensive   and it is totally irrelevant but this is  the best super bike you can buy right now so so so you
