pandemic key among this being the use of information technology in teaching and learning this has ensured that timely completion of academic circles while adhering to the ministry of health protocols i urge all institutions of learning to continue with efforts directed at limiting the spread of covet 19 and supporting the recovery of our communities from its effects including mental mental health issues ladies and gentlemen mental health remains a global challenge that has led to decreased productivity and loss of life i allowed the university for continued effort to address mental health then we will leave the world a better place than we found it i therefore urge all of us to acknowledge our mental health status and take the necessary action without fear of stigmatization ladies and without a doubt been a journey of resilience consistency and determination on the part of the graduates academic and support staff parents guardians and sponsors and even the covet 19 pandemic could a trade setter in quality research and innovation recently 122 researchers drawn from our five colleges made it to the 2022 top 100 1 000 scientists on the global alpha dojo scientific index ranking this ranking is based on the scientific performance of individual scientists is a robust measure of productivity and impact of research output i also note with great satisfaction that our scholars have continued to engage in research that addresses the sustainable development goals vision 2030 and the big four agenda one such case is the eu funded research project on upgrading of the omega fetch value chain these multi-stakeholder partnership seeks to utilize no more novel climate smart post-harvest processing technologies and practices for improved rural livelihoods the multi-disciplinary research covers kenya rwanda and uganda that is geared towards preventing postharvest losses and enhancing food security you will also recall that when i joined jake what a few years ago i promised to do what i could to contribute to the university's research efforts especially in mobilizing of funding for research i knew it was a long shot but i made the promise in this regard between november 2020 and june 2022 that is this month my organization find has tapped the incredible expertise of a team of scientists from the digital health applied research center or the hack of gay words that is led by professor simon karaja and includes other scientists like dr ruben though dr jayna duda one of the few ladies i have seen who loves numbers and is very arrogant professor fred won manokori among others and mobilized more than 2.8 million u.s dollars that is more than 300 million kenya sharings in funding for six projects in partnership with the ministry of health the projects are implemented in at least 10 counties spread across the country from kirifi to kagiado to kisumu tounieri to nakuru among others the projects which mainly focus on sustainable development goal number three sdg3 on ensuring healthy ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all at all ages vision 2030 and the big four agenda cover the following areas number one using digital tools to a strengthen covet 19 screening testing contact tracing and patient management and b by directional testing for tuberculosis and corvid 19. number two devolving testing for 19 to all levels of the health care system using rapid tests including door-to-door testing by community health volunteers thus enhancing access to testing and linkage to care number three improving access and efficiency of essential diagnostic services for women and children at primary and secondary healthcare levels number four using a mobile laboratory to support routine and surveillance diagnostic services and number five promoting integration of diagnostic data in decision making to improve access and quality of primary healthcare services through a universal health coverage tracker these projects are a clear demonstration of how jake what research is impacting on the kenyan people and indeed the global community i take this opportunity to help the scientists in the team for generating results that are going to have an impact on policy i also recognize the great leadership of the chair of our council and your council the vice chancellor at your management team that is ensuring that jquery remains attractive for research funding on dissemination of research outputs jacquard has consistently provided myriad platforms these include innovation exhibitions webinars seminars workshops and conferences the highlight this year was the 16th annual scientific conference and exhibition which attracted over 400 participants from 18 countries the diversity of papers presented at the conference provided key impetus for evidence-based policy and decision making the conference also showcased innovations with potential for commercialization further the university continues to forge strategic partnerships with our communities and industry notably the university in collaboration with the kiabu county hosted the youth innovation and entrepreneurship week from 23rd to 26th of march this year the event brought together 120 innovators with jay courts represented by 58 students during the event g nuevard was officially launched allowing the winning innovators to access loans from kcb at an interest rate of only seven percent the funding will go a long way in supporting the commercialization of innovations by our youth ladies and gentlemen jake what remains
