all right let's cut the crap and dive head first into this chromos thing yeah chromos you know what it is right that thing your kid uses for homework yeah yeah I mean everybody knows it from those cheap little laptops but uh there's a lot more to it way more to just uh you know then meets the eye so we're going to like unpack this whole story of how this thing went from like a browser and diapers to like a full-blown operating system that's like giving m Micosoft and apple will run for their money it's a wild ride for sure yeah so way back when back Chrome OS first popped up Google was super gung-ho about the cloud you know they wanted to make an OS that basically lived online everything you did was supposed to happen in the browser right it was a pretty out there idea back then especially when Windows was all about like installing a bunch of software and using all your hard drive space yeah it was like Google walked into a steakhouse with a veggie burger and was like yo this is the future exactly and everyone's like what the hell are you talking about yeah there's a lot of skepticism people just didn't get it like why bother with a whole new OS when you can just open Chrome on your Windows computer right that was the big question yeah but you know Google they were thinking long term they saw these cheap lightweight devices that could use the cloud for everything as like the next big thing right and they really wanted to get into schools yeah and boy did that gamble payoff oh yeah Chromebooks are everywhere in schools it's crazy like by 2016 they were like synonymous with classrooms especially in the US at least in the US yeah and get this yeah in 2020 Chromebooks outsold Max globally those overpriced crazy shiny toys for hipsters I know like who would have thought it was a huge Turning Point suddenly everybody was paying attention to Chrome OS was like a real threat but you know Google they knew they couldn't just stop there right that whole Cloud only thing was getting a little old people wanted more you know flexibility exactly so what did Google do they're like screw it let's bring Android apps to Chrome us you got it that was a huge deal yeah it opened up a whole new world for Chromebooks yeah but it wasn't like Smooth Sailing at first right like I remember trying to run Android apps back then it was like watching paint dry oh it was rough like so slow and frustrating yeah their early attempts with that Arc thing Arc they were clunky as hell yeah but you know Google Engineers they're persistent they don't give up they kept working on it MH came up with Arc plus plus a better container system okay and then finally Arc VM which uses virtual machines for better security and performance so basically they just kept throwing at the wall until something stuck pretty much but they got there yeah they figured out how to make Android apps run smoothly they did it's pretty impressive even if it took them a while it shows you how dedicated they are to making Chrome OS really versatile and they didn't stop with Android apps either they added support for Linux apps too Linux isn't that like for super nerds who live in their mom's basement and just code all day yeah Linux does have that geeky image mhm but it's also super powerful and flexible okay so by adding Linux support Google opened up chrom RIS to a whole new crowd like developers and designers yeah people who need serious software so now you can do all all sorts of crazy stuff on a Chromebook any much like coding websites editing videos yeah even running scientific simulations it's come a long way yeah who would have thought and that's not all what else did they do they added support for steam hold up steam on a Chromebook you got it are you telling me I can finally play like cyberpunk 2077 on a $200 laptop well not every Chromebook can handle those super demanding games okay but it's still huge it shows Google's serious about making Chrome OS a real gaming platform that's pretty damn impressive it is so Chrome OS has gone from like a browser in a box to a full-blown operating system that can run Android apps Linux apps and even Steam games it's like the Swiss army knife of operating system it is and Google's not done yet right they're always adding new stuff and making things better yeah I think Chrome OS has a bright future yeah but there's this one big question that's been hanging around for years yeah what the the hell is going to happen with Android right are these two operating systems going to like keep living separate lives or are they going to like merge into some kind of Frankenstein monster that's the million-dollar question isn't it and honestly nobody really knows for sure okay well let's uh but there are tons of rumors flying around let's dive into that rabbit hole and see what we can find all right let's do it you up for it the truth is out there somewhere okay yeah let's do it this whole Android merger thing it's been like this weird unspoken tension since the beginning like remember when Chrome OS first came out Google kept saying it wasn't a competitor to Android right right it was like they were these two siblings sharing a room both pretending they weren't Rivals but secretly trying to sabotage each other yeah classic sibling rivalry Google style exactly but then they started letting you run Android apps on Chromebooks yeah which kind of blurred the lines didn't it for sure was that like Google testing the waters for a merger or just a way to shut everyone up about chromos being just a browser it's hard to say what they were really thinking right Google's always been secretive about their plans yeah they play their cards close to their chest exactly but I think it was probably a bit of both yeah they wanted to make Chrome OS more useful but they were also probably seeing how well the two platforms could work together like an experiment yeah and then in 2015 The Wall Street Journal drops this bombshell report saying Chrome OS is going to get absorbed by Android everyone freaked out the tech World went nuts yeah Google was like nah chill everything's cool just a little family get together right but nobody believed them it was a total mess for Google's PR yeah they tried to downplay it saying they were just exploring ways to bring the Best of Both Worlds together but the damage was done yeah the merger rumors never really went away nope and now like a decade later we're hearing whispers about a full-blown merger actually happening soon yeah it's getting louder is Google finally ready to admit they have too many damn operating systems maybe like it's time to clean house could be or are they just messing with us who knows like some kind of sick Tech experiment uh honestly I think they're still figuring it out themselves yeah the lines between Chrome OS and Android are so blurred now it's almost impossible to tell where one ends and the other begins yeah they share so much code so many features M it almost makes sense to just merge them into one platform yeah just make one super OS EX imagine like seamlessly switching between your phone and your laptop yeah same apps same files everything just works that's the dream that's some Next Level right there and with all the stuff Google's doing with AI and the cloud mhm the possibilities are mind-blowing right like imagine a Google Assistant that really knows you yeah like it can anticipate your needs and like integrate with every part of your Digital Life That's the future okay but let's be real merging two complex operating systems is a nightmare oh yeah they're going to be tons of bugs compatibility issues yeah General user confusion it's a huge undertaking remember Windows Vista oh God that was a disaster that a disaster so yeah merging Chrome OS and Android is risky for sure but I think Google's learned from their mistakes I hope so they seem to be taking a more careful approach this time yeah and they're working closely with developers MH to make the transition as smooth as possible so you're saying there's a chance this could actually work I think so that Google might pull this off without screwing it up I wouldn't bet my life savings on it okay but yeah I think it's possible okay so let's say this merger actually happens right what does it mean for the average person well for one thing you can say goodbye to juggling multiple devices and operating system right your phone your laptop your tablet even your smart fridge will all be running the same platform so no more transferring files back and forth exactly no more compatibility headaches it'll all just work just pure seamless integration that's the goal that sounds pretty damn convenient it does doesn't it but what about privacy right Google already knows everything about us yeah that's a concern their browsing history our location data everything it's a lot of dare if they control the operating system on all our devices won't they be able to spy on us even more that's a valid concern yeah it's a bit creepy and it's something Google's going to have to address they better they need to be transparent about how they collect and use our data MH and they need to give users more control over their privacy settings yeah people are already pretty pissed off about all the data Google collects I know if they push it too far they're going to have a full-blown Rebellion on their hands I agree they need to be careful yeah but I think they understand how important privacy is okay and they're working to address those concerns they've already added some privacy features to Chrome IOS and Android and I think we'll see more in the future right so a unified Google OS could be amazing it could but it also comes with some serious risks definitely it's like the classic trade-off between convenience and privacy it is what do you think is it worth the gamble it's a tough call yeah but I think the potential benefits outweigh the risks a unified OS could unlock so much Innovation so much creativity it's hard not to be excited about the possibility I hear you it's like standing on the edge of a cliff looking out at this vast Uncharted Territory exactly it's scary but also exhilarating it is we're on the cusp of a new era in Computing and it's going to be wild all right speaking of new eras let's get back to Chrome OS itself okay one thing that always impressed me about this little OS that could kind is it's focus on security mhm I mean this thing is like Fort Knox compared to Windows it's true which is basically an open door for every virus and malware out there yeah window security is a joke so break it down for us okay what makes Chrome so damn secure all right let's start with verified boot okay it's like a digital bouncer that checks the operating system every time you turn on your Chromebook MH make sure no sneaky malware has messed with the system files so it's like a security guard checking your ID at the door exactly making sure you're not trying to sneak into the club with a fake yep if verified boot sees any unauthorized changes it won't let the system start up okay so the mware can't spread pretty clever it's a really effective way to keep your Chromebook safe okay so that's verifi boot then there's sandboxing sandboxing yeah it's a way of isolating each app and process in its own little container so it can't access other parts of the system like putting each program in its own little jail cell exactly so even if one app gets infected with malware it can't spread to the rest of the system nope it's contained that's pretty damn smart sandboxing is one of the best security features in Chrome OS okay I'm liking this it makes it really hard for malware to do any damage oh verified boots sandboxing what else you got automatic updates automatic updates yeah Chromo is constantly downloads and installs the latest security patches in the background so you don't even have to think about it no it just happens no more of those annoying update now popups exactly sign me up automatic updates make sure your Chromebook is always running the most secure version of the OS okay so Chrome OS is constantly updating itself yep keeping all the apps locked up in their little jail cells uhhuh and verifying the systems Integrity every time time you turn it on that's right that's a pretty impressive security setup it is but let's be real most people don't care about security unless it affects their porn collection true so what does all this mean for the average user it means you can browse the web download files install apps without worrying about getting infected okay you don't even need anti virus software which can slow down your computer and use up resources so it's like having a personal bodyguard for your Chromebook pretty much protecting you from all the digital nasties out there exactly exactly you can just relax and enjoy using your Chromebook knowing that it's taking care of the security stuff exactly all right so chromos is secure mhm it's versatile yeah and it's constantly evolving it is but let's not forget about one of its biggest selling points what's that affordability oh ah you can get a decent Chromebook for like a few hundred bucks it's crazy which is nothing compared to a new Windows laptop or MacBook Chromebooks are a Ste yeah if you're just browsing in the web checking email watching YouTube doing some light work mhm a Chromebook is more than enough definitely you don't need to spend a thousand bus on a laptop that can run crisis at Max settings not at all Chromebooks are all about Simplicity affordability and convenience they are they're perfect for people who want a hassle-free experience I agree so we've talked about the potential merger with Android the impressive security features the affordability yeah and the the overall versatility of Chrome OS H it's a pretty impressive package it's been quite a journey for this little operating system it has but there's one more thing I want to touch on okay the Enterprise market right Google's been trying hard to get Chrome biix into businesses they have and it seems to be working it is Chrome Enterprise is their platform for managing Chromebooks in a business setting it has all sorts of features for it departments to easily deploy manage and secure Chromebooks so they're going after the suits and ties now trying to convin Corporate America to ditch their plunky old windows machines exactly and embrace the cloud that's the goal and they're actually making progress they are Chromebooks are becoming more and more popular in businesses of all sizes so what's the appeal for businesses well there are a few reasons okay first Chromebooks are incredibly secure with all their built-in security features and automatic updates right they're way less vulnerable to malware and data breaches than Windows machines so businesses can finally stop worrying about their employees clicking on fishing links and downloading Shady attachments pretty much that's got to be a huge relief for it departments it is security is a big deal for businesses these days yeah for sure and Chromebooks offer a much higher level of protection than Windows laptops okay security is a big one yeah what else Chromebooks are also really easy to manage okay with chrome Enterprise it departments can manage and configure Chromebooks remotely MH install updates and even wipe devices remotely if they're lost or stolen so no more running around the office trying to fix everyone's computer problems exactly that sounds like a dream come true for it people it's a lot easier than dealing with Windows machines all right so we've got security and manageability mhm what else there's got to be another reason why businesses are switching to Chromebooks cost of course Chromebooks are way cheaper than Windows laptops both upfront and in terms of Maintenance so businesses can save a ton of money by switching to Chromebooks absolutely cost savings are always a big factor for businesses yeah makes sense and Chromebooks are a great value all right so we've got security manageability and affordability that's right that's a pretty compelling argument for businesses it is no wonder Chromebooks are becoming so popular in the Enterprise Market it's a perfect storm of factors that's driving the adoption of Chromebooks in businesses and you think this trend is just going to keep growing so Chrome us is no longer just a toy for kids and budget conscious consumers it's a serious contender in the business world is a force to be reckoned with chromos has come of age yeah it's a mature powerful and versatile operating system that can meet the needs of any business well I guess all those people who dismissed chrom OS as a glorified web browser are eating their words now I think so chromos has proven itself to be a real competitor to Windows and Macos it has it's a game changer for sure and it's here to stay it is so we spent like the last hour ripping apart Chrome OS yeah we've gone pretty deep from its humble beginnings as like a browser in a box to like a real player in the OS world it's come a long way we talked about it security its Android merger it's success in businesses even gaming it's a pretty versatile little OS so what's the verdict yeah is Chromo as the future that's the million dooll question isn't it it is and honestly I don't have a crystal ball predicting the future of tech is like hurting cats chaotic and unpredictable but chromos has always defied expectations that's true it went from being called a glorified web browser to a real alternative to Windows and Macos and it's still evolving still pushing the boundaries so you're saying there's a chance this little Underdog could actually win maybe that one day we'll all be using Chromebooks instead of Macs and windows machines it's not as crazy as it sounds really remember a few years ago nobody thought you could play serious games on a Chromebook true but look at us now yeah technology moves fast and Chrome OS is adapting okay let's play a little wh if game okay let's say Chrome OS actually becomes the dominant OS all right what does that world look like well for starters you can say goodbye to slow computers Okay Chrome OS is super lightweight and efficient your devices will boot up faster run smoother and last longer so no more waiting forever for my laptop to to wake up that's a win in my book and security becomes a non-issue really with its built-in security features and automatic updates chos is pretty much immune to viruses and malware so I can finally browse the web without worrying about getting infected pretty much that's a huge relief especially for people who aren't techsavvy no more panicking every time they click on a link okay what else changes in this Chrome OS World well the lines between your devices disappear yeah your phone your laptop your tell it they all become part of one platform you can seamlessly switch between them without any hassle so I could be working on a presentation on my laptop yeah and then just grab my phone and continue editing exactly and with Google's Ai and Cloud power behind it the possibilities are endless like what give me an example imagine a voice assistant that not only answers your questions but also anticipates your needs schedules your appointments even writes your emails for you okay now that's a futuristic it is but let's be real yeah every technological advancement has downsides true what are the potential drawbacks of this Chrome OS World well one concern is that Google could become too powerful controlling not just the information we access but also the devices we use yeah that's a lot of power for one company yeah it is it's like giving the keys to the kingdom to a company that already knows everything about us it's a valid concern yeah a bit creepy there's also the issue of choice Choice yeah in a Chrome OS world would there be room for other operating systems other platforms right or would we all be forced to use Google's way of doing things it' be like a monoculture and Tech exactly everyone using the same OS the same apps it could stifle Innovation yeah variety is the spice of life right it is a healthy Tech ecosystem needs diversity competition different ways of doing things a world where everyone uses Chrome OS might not be good for Innovation so it's a trade-off like most things in life it is a Chrome OS world could bring simpl security seamless integration but it could also cost us privacy choice and maybe even Innovation it's a complex issue yeah with no easy answers but it's a conversation worth having definitely especially as technology keeps evolving absolutely all right I think it's time to wrap up our Deep dive into Chrome OS okay we've explored its past present and potential future yeah it's been a wild ride and I have a feeling this is just the beginning I think you're right all right folks that's a wrap on this episode of The Deep dive thanks for listening thanks for tuning in and we'll catch you next time for another Deep dive into the world of tech peace out e for
