tonight a Nova Scotia family demands answers after a mother of three dies in a hospital ER M I feel like I'm dying they're gonna let me die here and I just told her like no that's why I got you in the hospital a grieving husband describes how he begged for help Canada signs up for new fighter jets but how much will they cost and when will they land why it took seven years to make a decision of something that caused taxpayers an exorbitant amount of money Ellen Morrow traces a dramatic rise in homemade firearms that is a completed essentially Glock 19. what is Canada doing about so-called ghost guns this is the national the chief correspondent Adrian Arsenault tonight a grieving husband speaks out after his wife's agonizing death in a Nova Scotia emergency Ward the province is now investigating why she waited long hours for care before dying in front of her husband's eyes you will see that the story reaches Beyond one family's tragedy but that's where Kate McKenna starts us off animal lover firefighter mother and wife that's how Gunter holtoff wants people to remember his wife Ali just a Karen person over there for everybody on New Year's Eve Ally felt stomach pains her husband took her here the hospital in Amherst Nova Scotia wiltoff says his wife's condition deteriorated in front of him I think she actually said started saying that she was felt like she was dying in the waiting room outside uh but but she kept saying it more and was she said I'm I feel like I'm dying they're gonna let me die here and I just told her like no that's why they got you in the hospital I mean to get you fixed up and we'll just be here might be here a day or two but then we'll go back to normal no big deal he says they waited six hours before seeing a doctor her pain so bad she lay on the ground in the fetal position only getting attention when things took a turn for the worse and she started screaming she's first slowly she and quietly she was saying help help holdoff now knows he watched his wife slowly die in front of him unfortunately I feel like we were neglected until she was to a point where they couldn't ignore us anymore but at that point it was just too late 12 hours after they arrived at this ER she was gone it's not clear what killed her but he believes if she'd been seen faster she might have lived Ali holthoff's death put a spotlight on a sore point in Nova Scotia Healthcare especially in rural areas what it tells me is that there's you know we have to fix Health Care in this province and we're committed to doing that the Ministry of Health has launched an investigation to figure out exactly what happened the investigation is a very important part of you know where we go with our next steps and the information we're able to to provide the family members family members will be invited and included in the investigation that's important to gun to hold off because when Ali died he took on new roles single father widower and now Advocate fighting to make sure that this doesn't happen again so okay this story is that nightmare people have been you know worrying about and I guess Advocates have been warning that something like this could very well happen not just in Nova Scotia but across the maritimes that's right Adrian in fact New Brunswick authorities are already investigating multiple emergency room deaths that happened in the past year and on Prince Edward Island an emergency room nurse warned lawmakers last month that they too are overrun health ministries in all three provinces say they know this is a problem and it's left maritimers worried that help might not be available for them when they need it the most Kate thanks very much for this in the wake of this past holiday's travel chaos that left baggage lost and passengers stranded and enraged Ottawa has promised action but Ashley Burke shows us promises are the easy part [Music] it was a holiday travel season passengers called traumatic it's been a week now and I still have hard time sleeping at night Royce and Fox's family was stranded in Cuba she spent her days in the hotel lobby with her two young children waiting for a sun wing flight home for six days no bus it's almost 10 20. it was horrible it was horrible at the first few days I have to wake them up and say Kate dress dress up now put your shoes on let's wait let's wait you have to be oh wait this is like 11 at night one in the morning others were stuck for up to 20 hours on VIA Rail trains the system brought to a standstill because of bad weather people say oh you're in your seat and you were comfortable but it really was a bit of a traumatic experience and not knowing what was happening people calling 9-1-1 people jumping from the train Federal politicians took notice and now they're demanding answers we have a failed uh system in Canada for dealing with passenger rights an urgent meeting called in the middle of a parliamentary break their goal to find out what happened after both the summer and now winter season of travel chaos and to make sure it doesn't happen again we were promised quite frankly by the liberal Minister that these matters were rest that he had it under control that the broken system had been fixed clearly it has not been fixed there are still massive problems the committee wants to hear from sun wing Air Canada and WestJet along with major airports VIA Rail and the transport Minister himself what had happened should not have happened there is ongoing review right now the committee will start a study on Thursday and plans to speak to customers themselves many are now seeking compensation after their holiday travel nightmares ended up costing them thousands in unanticipated costs Ashley Burke CBC News Ottawa much of California is on alert tonight after days of deadly storms residents are now bracing for more devastating weather so have a look at the satellite image of exactly what they're facing as a vet brend explains there are now threats of catastrophic flooding high winds and Relentless rains flooded Santa Cruz leading to daring rescues all right and crashed trees into homes just after midnight there was a gigantic crash this after a series of storms already took the lives of at least 12 people Joe Costa tried but failed to save a woman living in a tent near his along the Sacramento River one you know we've been dealing with this between you know since between Christmas and New Year's and we're we're a week and a half into this already with another week week and a half to go Rivers and Creeks have flooded roads and Fields now 32 000 people in Santa Cruz County have been ordered out of their homes and those in nearby Montecito have been urged to leave now after 20 centimeters of rain fell within 12 hours this is rapidly evolving and we have major issues that are occurring across the county with respect to road closures and so forth this is not a day to be out doing anything if you don't have to now behind me is one of these sump pump stations these really really big ones so walk with me here you can see how high the water is here Rob Karl Marx showed fields near the Sacramento River Sunday he says he hasn't seen this much water since 1986 a record flood year meteorologists like him warn that the storms won't stop for another nine days jarring news for those already hit along with those rains more high winds so even as Californians clean up honest to God I saw the tree coming right at me there's more Danger on the way yvettebrand CBC News Vancouver NFL player Demar Hamlin is back in Buffalo he's been transferred to a hospital there one week after his heart stopped during a game in Cincinnati Dr pritz and I have spoken extensively with his care team in Buffalo and I can confirm that he is doing well and this is the beginning of the next stage of his recovery and Hamlin's doctors added that they're ecstatic about his progress but that a full recovery could take weeks or maybe months the Brazilian capital is relatively quiet tonight but a day after supporters of ex-president gyro bolsonaro stormed government buildings the message from officials was loud and clear punishment is coming Susan ormiston takes us inside Brazil's political crisis all right they left a trail of violent crime motivated by anger and politics the mob trashed Brazil's heart of government in the name of a president who lost and cried foul this man pointing to a picture of jair basinaro says my hero Hero's house authorities say they found five unexploded grenades and traces of blood urine and feces in presidential rooms rioters wielded knives and axes more than a thousand have been arrested or detained sworn in just a week ago Brazil's president Luisa nacio Lula de Silva called the riots and attempted coup needing his cabinet inside the deface building he vowed harsh punishment but the swarming of the capital shows the new government's failed intelligence the demonstration was not a surprise widely advertised and aided by some police what happened was that not only they went there but they weren't excluded by the police you have images of the police coming with some security forces took two and a half hours to control the scene the governor of Brasilia a bolsonaro supporter has been suspended and encampments of followers outside Army Headquarters were broken up in Florida where bolsonaro's been staying for a week little sign of him Monday his family says he went to hospital with abdominal pain but he denies he incited any of this and the destruction dug so deep that many even Lula's opponents acknowledge it went too far bolsonaro has now become a liability but today at least the countries United against what happened yesterday booing January 6th in America that outrage may not last so Susan you covered the Brazilian elections in October this violence for the moment is over but no doubt that tension is still like simmering below the surface well yes I mean you saw the moral indignation of those rioters you know the impunity of what they did and you know bolsonaro deeply polarized Brazilians and he left this big rift which we saw in that election it was tight it was fierce and there's repercussions and you know president Lula faces a divided Congress still because although he won a lot of bolsonaro's deputies are in that Congress so it's week one of President Lula's term and he's also facing a major crisis still this isn't going to be swept away it's also very familiar Susan thank you you're welcome the leaders of Canada the United States and Mexico are condemning the attack issuing a joint statement that reads in part we stand with Brazil as it safeguards its Democratic institutions our governments support the Free Will of the people of Brazil that statement comes as the three Gather in Mexico City for the North American leaders Summit David Cochran is also there so David trade and the economy obviously high up on the agenda yeah is Supply chains right at the top of that list too Adrian deeper ties between the three countries and key areas such as microchips electric vehicles and critical minerals because there's a shared strategic appetite to lessen the Reliance on countries like China for those economic Necessities it's a lesson they learned the hard way during the pandemic it's a lesson that Europe is learning now when it comes to energy after the Russian invasion of Ukraine so the high level talks here is that this is all forced a global transition in trade so how does this highly successful trading block capitalize on that transition and I suppose along with the trilateral meetings Justin Trudeau will obviously be meeting one-on-one with Joe Biden what are we expecting them to talk about right so trade will be at the top of that agenda too but two things to watch on and one is the Nexus program the US has refused to reopen a series of offices in Canada because of concerns over legal protection for the employees that work there that's led to a real backlog in this program we're told that there has been significant progress made on this issue and to expect an announcement tomorrow and also on Haiti the U.S is looking for a country to lead the security and humanitarian response in that country and the White House says this is something that President Joe Biden will raise directly with prime minister Trudeau when they meet tomorrow all right David Cochrane in Mexico City thanks David thank you Pope Francis issued his strongest statement yet on Iran's ongoing Crackdown on protesters the death penalty he said only fuels a thirst for vengeance several Western countries have denounced the execution of two protesters on Saturday seen here on trial Canada announced sanctions on two more senior Iranian officials and three organizations but today Iran's Judiciary sentenced three more protesters to death and that's Ukraine where Russian missile struck a Village Market in the harkiv region there are reports that two women were killed and several people injured including at least one child the village is far from any fighting but Bak moot well that's another story combat around that city is intense and tonight Ukraine's president said the situation there is extremely difficult Canada has finally announced which fighter jet will replace the aging cf-18s and no surprise it's the F-35 but as Marie Brewster explains even though the name hasn't changed the government says it's not the same jet the conservatives chose more than a decade ago it has been quite the political Journey from this to this we will not buy the F-35 fighter jet to this the F-35 is a modern reliable and agile fighter aircraft and it is the right aircraft for our country the political Road may be at an end but for the Air Force and its Workhorse cf-18s there's still a lot of Runway before the F-35 lands the First new planes in this 19 billion dollar deal don't arrive until 2026. they won't be fully up and running until 2029 and it could be 2034 before the last of the CFA teens are retired the Liberals were dead set against buying this warplane so what changed the aircraft has matured and we see now that many of our allies eight countries in particular are using the F-35 the Liberals also emphasize they ran a competition that looked at other possible Fighters a political smoke screen according to the opposition meant to cover the about term we supported the Liberals originally and and moving ahead with a competition but why it took seven years uh to make a decision that we ultimately made over a decade ago uh is is something that caused taxpayers an exorbitant amount of money money is also on the minds of other critics who wonder whether the defense budget can handle spending billions on new Fighters and tens of billions on the Navy's new frigates at the same time I was there as a minister as a deputy as an ADM I would be proudly presenting it to you and saying this is how this is how you can be sure we can afford it if there is one thing all sides in this debate can agree on it's that the F-35 has been a political football with the signing of the contract those days might be over Marie rooster CBC News Ottawa well it's a bestseller even before it hits bookshelves Prince Harry's new Memoir is set to drop Tuesday it's already causing quite the stir thanks in part to a string of promotional interviews Thomas daigler has more on what Harry said and the reaction it's all prompting some British bookstores made plans to open at midnight for fans eager to snatch up Prince Harry's Memoir the book may be a pre-sale best seller but some londoners aren't buying Harry's motives it seems like he's airing out quite a lot of dirty laundry about the family it's a bit sad really good to see you promoting his book in a series of TV interviews Harry cast himself as a longtime victim of lies in the British press I'm left at a position where these mistruths need to be corrected accusing his brother of being complicit in leaks William his office were part of these stories Harry claims his stepmother Camilla sought to rehabilitate her own image by sharing stories at Harry's expense that made her dangerous because of the connections that she was forging within the British press Palace officials have avoided on the record comments but citing unnamed sources British newspapers say Prince William is burning inside and King Charles is awaiting Harry's call if you actually look at the Press responses to the interviews to the book these are planted stories this is exactly what Harry is talking about as social media users make light of Harry's family drama cartoonists suspect the king's patience is being tested some historians though don't see this as a joke four months before Charles's coronation it's an occasion for the the king to renew the bond of the contract between the crown and the people and to put his own stamp on the monarchy and has all been completely overshadowed the Queen's death brought the family together but reconciliation now seems less likely than ever with this book describing a bitter history and lingering anger Thomas daglet CBC News Toronto so where does all this leave things between Harry and his fellow Royals the board is very much in their call but you know Megan and I have continued to say that we will openly apologize for anything that we did wrong coming up we will lean on the insights of a royal correspondent and author plus more Canadian parents are taking education into their own hands some days we're sitting on the floor playing or drawing other days we're out and about walking or visiting the library how the pandemic has driven a surge in homeschooling and a Canadian skier on top of the world the moments behind an extraordinary damn slopes we are back into [Music] I'm Dan burden the Nationals Vancouver Newsroom with some breaking news to tell you about at this hour an avalanche has claimed the life of a police officer in BC's Kootenai region and a second officer has been critically injured the Avalanche was just north of Nelson BC near caslow police in Nelson say a pair of their officers were hit by the Avalanche while snowmobiling it's not clear if the officers were on duty at the time the officer's death comes as BC faces its most dangerous Avalanche risk in decades due to so-called weak snow the result of a lengthy period of drought in the fall followed by cold temperatures the conditions are being compared to a deadly season in 2003 when at least 14 people were killed in Avalanches Nelson's police chief is expected to provide more information at a news conference in the morning in a moment back to Adrian arseneaux and the rest of tonight's National a Virginia teacher who was shot by a six-year-old student is being praised tonight for getting her other students out of the classroom before getting help for herself my time in the Marines like I've I've met Heroes I've met Living Legends um and I can tell you Abby would be welcome in our company anytime police say she was shot during a lesson with no warning but that it was not an accident the gun was bought legally by the boy's mother the 25 year old teacher is recovering the latest numbers from stats can suggest homeschooling has been on the rise in Canada as Deanna Sumner Johnson tells us the trend seems to have started at the height of the pandemic here Ghana single mom Amanda leiko says the pandemic gave her the impetus to try homeschooling her son Riker I'm a very big self-educator and I've always found that I I was a very Avid Reader it's a decision being made by a growing number of Canadian parents the number of students who are homeschooled in Canada more than doubled in the early part of the pandemic according to statistics Canada there are reasons for it and the curriculums they follow very widely Amanda leiko says she follows Riker's interests some days we're sitting on the floor playing or drawing other days we're out and about walking or visiting the library this family who live in a rural farming Community opted for a more regimented approach I'll sit with one of the lesson one works on their handwriting and then we switch mom Martina page says it's given her family more time together busing to school used to take an hour each day both kids get to spend a lot more time with their dad because we farm so they can go out to see Dad at the shop and dad comes home for lunch but there are criticisms concerns about learning gaps behavioral problems and issues at home not being spotted others worry homeschooling could undermine faith in public education but this researcher for the Fraser Institute who has homeschooled her own kids says people need not see homeschooling as a threat almost 90 percent of students in Canada attend public schools she says reasons for homeschooling are both practical and ideological public schooling is not going anywhere except for to to improve as it sees that and responds to what parents are looking for in terms of curriculum different pedagogy different convictions that parents are are becoming more vocal about what are we reading pumpkin soup the families we spoke to all say they'd be open to sending their kids back to school in the future even next school year but for now home is where the school is Deanna sumanak Johnson CBC News Toronto up next a close look at a threat Canadian police say is on the rise guns that can be made by anyone anywhere so someone would have printed this part on a 3D printer and then have gone to just a normal gun store and bought the metal pieces and put it together you bet yeah Ellen Morrow investigates the growing problem of ghost guns everybody plus after Prince Harry's bombshell accusations what comes next about the fact that William his office were part of these stories we'll ask a long time Royal Watcher if the damage can be undone the national takes you deeper into the stories shaping our world next [Music] [Music] take a good look at these 3D printed guns weapons like these pose a growing threat and not just in the big cities they can be made in secret and they cannot be traced Ellen Morrow investigates white police across the country are warning about ghost guns it's crazy that this becomes a full out gun this will soon be a ghost gun an untraceable firearm with no serial number anywhere on it homemade in just a few hours using a 3D printer just these layer layer layer turns into a firearm police across Canada are worried they say these do-it-yourself weapons are a growing threat there's a flood of 3D Guns entering into the city we contacted police forces across the country these guns are commonly referred to as ghost guns none of them have serial numbers 3D printing Firearms is highly illegal there is definitely underworld and a criminal element to it seven agencies from large cities like Winnipeg to smaller ones like Sarnia told us there was a jump often a big one in 3D printed gun seizures in 2022 over the previous year more than 100 were seized Nationwide Calgary had one of the largest spikes police here seized 17 3D printed guns in 2022 the year before just one [Music] this can be 3D printed in someone's living room in someone's bedroom in someone's closet without anyone knowing these two Farms We Believe were printed off of this machine acting staff sergeant Ben Lawson heads up Calgary's Firearms investigative unit this is a standard Glock style model so the bottom part is all 3D printed so the purple part and then the silver and black parts are commercially made so someone would have printed this part on a 3D printer and then have gone to just a normal gun store and bought the metal pieces and put it together you bet yeah so where there would be a serial number there's just nothing exactly the serial number is normally on the receiver or frame of a firearm but that's the part that's 3D printed without that number there's no way to trace these guns why would someone print one of these anything that they can do to make themselves more secret and more Anonymous is probably more advantageous to the criminal anyone can go online purchase a computer a laptop for a hundred dollars they can buy this for 300 and now they can start printing firearms you can 3D print a firearm all parts for say 500 and the markup is is astronomical we can see them range anywhere from 2500 to 7 500 in Canada there's a large and very active 3D printed gun Community online the Glock 26x the AR pistol all right let's crank some rounds out of this creators showing off new designs to millions of followers I printed this beautiful blue frame and sharing exactly how to make them so this is the YouTube page for one of these gun designers and down in the comments they actually tell people exactly where they can go to find the information to be able to print one of these guns it links me to another site where the files are all there to be able to be downloaded so I picked the gun that I want to print and right here in just a few clicks I'm able to download a guide and all the files and information to be able to print this weapon actually printing a gun in Canada is illegal but downloading these instruction manuals isn't and anyone can buy the extra parts from a gun store or online without a firearms license in the U.S 3D printed guns are legal in most States including Wisconsin where we've come to meet one of the gun designers who puts those files on the internet Lucy this is freedom of speech it's an art form Ethan Middleton has designed Five 3D printed guns this handgun I designed called the Schnitzel his files for making them downloaded thousands of times why put these instructions on the internet I think these types of things being out in the public help responsible adults and responsibly armed people stay responsibly armed whether the government thinks that they should be able to or not do you get messages from Canadians about this I do yeah um there's there's a couple of dudes who message basically just looking at the files saying hey I really appreciate what you're doing but they make it clear that they're not manufacturing them themselves then you do have some people who are totally not wink wink manufacturing these I would assume that these people aren't bringing these Firearms out in public to like shooting ranges and stuff like that but it's hard to know correct yeah who knows do you ever worry about one of your files with your instructions getting into the hands of someone who might then use the gun to commit a violent crime if something were to happen with one of my firearms and innocent lives were lost that would really suck but the real situation of that is if it's not my design it's going to be someone else's we just got the filament set we'll get the files ready to get sent over and then uh what print remember this this gun took about seven hours to print we sped up the footage all right so the print finished overnight the Schnitzel Glock 19 nine millimeter handgun now we were able to print this pretty quickly because this machine's really fancy and really expensive but traditionally this print would have taken around 30 hours it's just crazy like that wire it looks just like wire becomes this gun about 40 minutes to fit the metal pieces into the plastic frame Springs pins and stuff like that there's always post processing things that need to be done to make it functional that is a completed essentially Glock 19.

thank you then we go with Ethan to see if it actually works so we're going to be shooting into this pile of wood here all right all right here we go and there it is a brand new firearm completely under the radar so it reset everything looks good to me the weapon is still alive so no one's gonna be allowed in front of the muzzle guns are potentially dangerous tools they need to be respected in Canada the past year has seen headline after headline after headline stories about alleged 3D printed gun manufacturing rings and weapons being ceased but how many are not in Toronto we ask Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino why the government hasn't done more sooner to get ahead of this rise it's so easy to find the files that you would need to make the guns online it's easy to go out there and get a 3D printer just seems like the train has already left the station with this problem well I think we can stop the train in the tracks it isn't just the ability to access the 3D technology although that's one part of it but to then use that technology or that software for the purpose of manufacturing a component or a ghost gun in its entirety is something that we are actively exploring as a potential legislative a response to the problems this is technology that is new but it has been around for a few years why haven't you done more sooner to stop this well we've been active we put in place a national ban on assault style rifles we put in place in that handgun 3D printed guns specifically and we have a plan in place to deal specifically with ghost guns which does involve more investments in law enforcement expanding our legislative toolkit a robust collaboration with the United States and sending a strong message to criminals that if you think you're going to use ghost guns to get away with it you're wrong but with so much information already out there the parts and printers so accessible the threat of 3D printed guns is likely to grow 3D printing is definitely one on the rise in there and then as the technology gets better it's gonna make it easier how big of a challenge do you see this becoming I wasn't a big proponent of putting a lot of resources into 3D printed guns here in Calgary because we just didn't see them we're seeing this uptick in 2022 so who knows what 2023 is going to bring [Music] so Ellen this is scary and when you talk about the rise in ghost gun seizures across the country what sort of numbers are we looking at well along with that increase in Calgary one of the other biggest increases is right here in Ontario the Ontario Provincial Police last year they seized 18 3D printed guns before that just one in Newfoundland last year police seized eight of these Firearms the first time they've ever been seized there and Adrian this is happening in bigger cities but it's also happening in smaller communities right across the country presumably these are just ones we know about exactly all right Ellen thanks very much you're welcome Royal Watchers are taking stock of the damage as Prince Harry continues to take very public swipes at his family with her on the way to being Queen console there was going to be people or bodies left in the street my conversation with someone who said who said Harry has put [Music] Prince Harry has a lot to say has said it shown it written about his childhood trauma his adult anxiety and the private details of the royal Rift that seems so Fierce do you speak to your dad we all we haven't spoken for quite a while officially released tomorrow just put in put enormous amounts of private conversations in the public domain wouldn't your brother say to you Harry how could you do this to me after everything we went through wouldn't that be what you would say he'd probably say all sorts of different things but the level of planting and leaking from other members of the family means that in my mind they have written countless books so the big question now is the relationship between Prince Harry and the royal family salvageable no one better to answer that than Katie Nickel World correspondent for Vanity Fair author of multiple books about multiple Royals so Katie is it salvageable well it's a really good question Adrian and it's a really hard question to answer because right now given all of the bombs that Harry has thrown at his family I mean they really should turn Buckingham Palace into a bomb shelter because that's what they need and I think there can be a Reconciliation somewhere but but not till much further down the line and I think actually there will be two reconciliations here I think and the first will be with the king I think we're going to see him extend an olive branch I accept we will see him invite the sussexes to the coronation this idea of a rift at the heart of the House of Windsor and is is not what he wants but I think with Prince William um I think that's going to be much much harder I think William has been deeply hurt a great sense of betrayal on his card Williams simply could not and to this day cannot understand why Harry left and how he left and Harry can't understand why his brother is more on his wavelength so there is a real divide so Kitty you know Prince Harry you communicate with the royal family and I'm wondering what is the feeling within that family right now well I have spoken to sources who who have been in touch with the immediate members of the royal family and there is a sense of palpable sense of shock of the trail and of astonishment at just how far Prince Harry has gone in his autobiography I think they knew they'd gotten away pretty lightly with Netflix stocky Series so they were ready for far more Revelations and a far more damaging narrative in Harry's autobiography but I don't think anyone was quite expecting and the length to which Harry has gone you know I'm imagining Prince Harry listening to this conversation and saying this is the sort of leaking he was talking about is is he right about that listen the job of any Communications office within the palace is to communicate with journalists that is what they're there for this idea that Harry is absolutely held Benton that the palace was sitting there calling Royal correspondents like myself and planting stories planting negative stories about him and about Megan and giving us favorable stories about Camilla it just simply wasn't the case and I tell you this Adrian as well I was at the palace well before Megan was on the scene and Harry said to me look I'm fed up to be writing all about my private life can we write about something else and he he wanted me to do something with the charity walking with the wounded which ideally did and published that across two pages of the mail on Sunday now I I accept that people will say ah but that's not planting negative stories that vastly I'm asking him to but that's him asking for you to write about his charity work yes it was but he wanted to keep the other stuff out of the paper so Harry talks about these briefings but he used to breathe himself you know this this phenomenon that that he talks about and we've all talked about for some time the you know don't complain and never explain I you know Prince Harry describes it as sort of the family's motto but is there anything beyond the tradition of that that would stop say Prince William at this point from saying I love my brother I miss my brother to hear that he's been in this much pain is terrible we will work together to form a path forward etc etc is there anything stopping him from doing that well I mean nothing's stopping from doing anything I think at the moment he's probably quite blinded by anger in that sense of betrayal last night Katie looking forward coronation in four months time what's it going to look like considering everything that's happened it was interesting hearing Harry say that the ball within the Royal Family's Court I actually think when it comes to coronation the ball May well be in the sussex's court it'll be their choice and ultimately their decision as to whether they come and so we I guess we have to wait and see but at the moment there's a lot of blame being leveled here and not much accountability on Harry's part he can't throw everything at the royal family and not accept that some mistakes were made on his part families are complicated Katie Nico thank you as always thank you we have more ahead including a pilot project some say could lead to Greener public transit these are ways for us to sustain to have sustainable fuel really look at climate action and put a big punch into that Sweet Victory on the slopes in our Mall tonight the last of Quebec's fugitive holsteins are back in the barn and out of Harm's Way in July more than 20 of the dairy cows just ran off as they were startled by a summer storm and they roamed free destroying tens of thousands of dollars in crops but the local agricultural group managed to lure them into a pen as food outside grew more scarce as the new year gets underway a Transit pilot project is about to kick off in the Edmonton area two new hydrogen buses will hit the road to be tested by real world conditions as Julie Wong explains some hope it's a step towards creating a hydrogen economy in the province this Edmonton Transit bus looks and feels like your average bus but there's one major difference it's powered by hydrogen there's no engine there's no transmission this big black fuel cell uses hydrogen and oxygen to create energy to drive the bus there are zero emissions the byproducts heat and water these are ways for us to sustain and have sustainable fuel really look at climate action and put a big punch into that for one year the city will track how the bus handles distances and Alberta's extreme temperatures it's certainly part of our our desire to be emissions neutral by 2050. on a full tank this bus would be able to run between 300 and 480 kilometers the same as a regular diesel bus hydrogen is is on fire right now globally Brian helfenbaum says half a trillion dollars of hydrogen projects have been announced worldwide in the last few years Alberta has vast reserves of natural gas which can be converted into hydrogen the province is aiming to become a hydrogen Hub we already have the Technologies in place to to make it to move it and to use It ultimately hydrogen could Supply essentially all of our Heavy Haul vehicles and our trains and our ships and our planes 12 years ago BC scrapped 20 hydrogen buses because of costs experts say the technology has matured safety has also been addressed over the years and The Time Is Now ripe in Canada we have about 4 000 people currently employed in the clean hydrogen sector we expect to see that to grow by orders of magnitude as we're able to displace more polluting forms of energy things go well with a pilot there's potential to transition the bus fleet and perhaps an identity changing that concept of oil country to a sustainable fuel is something you know people don't often get an opportunity to kind of be a part of and it starts with one bus but we're looking at many things beyond that and all that starts when the hydrogen buses hit the road in February Julia Wong CBC News Edmonton we'll take a good long look because you are looking at Canada's new star on the slopes Valerie Grenier so she captured her first World Cup medal this weekend and she did it by winning gold in the giant slalom in Slovenia so this was a historic Victory the first Canadian woman since 1974 to win in that discipline and she came back from injury to do it it's good news and so tonight it's our moment I felt really confident coming into this race and knowing that I had finished fourth year last year first run I surprised myself by coming down in the lead I was not expecting that and I was a little worried that I would be really nervous for the second run because I'd never been in this position before and then before the start I felt so confident so relaxed I just sent it down did my best scheme that I could when I crossed the finish line and I saw that I had won between so many emotions at the same time like just a big relief knowing that I kept it and then just like such happiness and I don't know so many emotions it was insane my teammates just came into the finished area like jumped over me just to like hugged me and that was a really cute moment so that's a really cool part about it that I I felt like I I was in the right spot [Applause] like I was meant to be there I guess top of the podium absolutely the right spot for you Grand uh Valerie so if you're thinking 1974 who was that that was the great Kathy kreiner uh who won that then and to do what what Valerie just did is incredible her injury was massive she broke some serious bones in her leg and then she had that mental fog of she was nervous you know she was nervous about the mountain but she made peace with the mountain she healed and she's got a huge future that is the national for January the 9th thank you for being with us have a good night [Music] thank you [Music]
