Microgrids For Energy Access & Economic Productivity
we're in foreign partnership with all on and we're here with another guest on the show today uh i've been joined by the communications officer of all on as the co-host for this episode and that's talking about our wisdom chat jumbo hi wisdom how are you hi collins good morning good morning good morning uh college i had cameroon made it to the finals i've been to the out of the knuckle stage you heard yes oh you just heard it yeah your head i didn't watch with the head congratulations yeah that's all of us there are three west african countries there is any time we stop dividing ourselves along the lines by lines created by some there's one line called the pickup line have you heard that pickup line before no okay um maybe after this talk about is a line it's one of those lines that just divide nations and the african continent and make you feel like you're all different but they're all the same thing so it's our celebration congratulations to us absolutely everyone but i get your point absolutely but hey we're here again to talk about um the topic for today's uh micro greets for energy access and economic productivity right correct and um we do have yet another guest joining us uh uh you wanna do it honestly no of course of course of course yes so our guest today is emmanuel tewase he is the founder of silk commie technologies i hope i did justice to that so emmanuel is one of the seven winners of the cleantech hub and all on incubation challenge our program for last year okay welcome emmanuel thank you very much wisdom it's a pleasure to be here good morning collins and good morning nigeria great so let's start with you giving us a bit of a background and professional journey let the people meet you okay thank you very much my name is imano tewasi i am an entrepreneur i'm a ceo of um so economic technologies so i started out when i was younger i wanted to be an engineer i wanted to be an aeronautical engineer precisely and while i was in primary school i built a helicopter that won a whole lot of awards for me but going on after secondary school i my parents didn't have the resources to send me approach for i could do engineering degree so i decided to study computer engineering and i studied computer engineering i started at federal political academy where i studied computer engineering as the national diplomat level okay after that i went ahead to federal university of technology where i started management and it was during my stay at federal university of technology that i joined a whole lot of professional networks i volunteered a whole lot to the hope of internships i joined enactus football which was very very [Music] helpful tower in my journey and career so um today i run nice and while like all your said colleges is very young and all this you have achieved man that's a lot so what i was reading about you um i came to understand that you believe that technology is key to driving socio-economic growth in africa that is huge tell us a little about that just in one minute [Music] okay um socio-economic growth um it's about progress and um from my research i figured out that a whole lot of advanced countries and the industrial climates like usa and others they all progress based on new technologies new technologies we are very very private out to their progress so big for instance the united states in the 1800s so they said their progress due to the new innovations like railroads okay and oil the discovery of oil and electricity so this we are very very private our india transformation and if you come down to china in the east what has for the massive growth over the past 50 years is um globalization which is brought about by the um by internet and e-commerce okay so this is this this was very key in china's massive goods so i believe that africa can leverage on new technologies like clean technologies the internets and several new technologies to actually leap frog progress and scale our progress in the continent interesting we'll break all of this down as we go down this show collins i mean you uh we know that you we're the lead organizer for tech star startup weekend and enactus futo where over a hundred talented students executed projects in on renewable energy could you tell us more about this okay um i my journey with um textiles love weekends i i was privileged to partake in the textiles weekends events in 2018 in my school federal university of technology and it's actually helped me a whole lot because in three days i was able to see and learn how to build a startup in three days just over a weekend friday saturday and sunday so that was very very key and in in place one last tea i applied to textiles to actually organize such itself because i realized that if i had i was transformed by just a 3d event a whole lot of young people in who will actually benefit from the same program so i decided to apply and build a license organization to explain so my enactus journey i joined an actress in 2018 while i was in 311 and i started off i have had a four year student starting actors okay so i started off as a technical director of two years and um two years as a team lead so my journey at an artist have been very people though not only um executing projects for learning leadership and how to meet students over 100 students drawing executes projects so that has been very very key in my journal interested there was something very special about futo college because i've met a lot of young people out of photo who do this amazing tech stuff i don't know if you if you've met a few too because i mean it's a technology school for technology i mean something is happening in future that we really must know about we have a lot of grantees too who came out of photo amazing work you guys are doing maybe the autumn meaning that's around there maybe it gives you inspiration right you know what i'm talking about all right he knows what i'm talking about all this knowledge you got led you to start uh um how do you pronounce it again so economy technologies uh i mean the name alone is getting me interested uh and and since then you have been working building many grids at micro grids to tell us what is the idea behind setting up the company you've learned a lot about building startups from all this training you attended so you went out to found this company and what does so economy really means can you break that down a little okay um this economy was formed from the um from two words um first word is solar and second one's economy to actually improve economic growth and productivity in communities around the country so that was that was how we named the company and um [Music] the inspiration behind it was while we were executing a project at the community while i was team leader of enactus okay so we discovered a serious problem in the markets there um we had a whole lot of traders who were using these kerosene lanterns so this they call yeah i know it i know it yeah that's what they were using to sell at night okay and someone else in the market actually had generating sets they had um these past my nephew directors and they were spending a whole lot so these guys spend up to 500 to 1000 rp on full just power their generations and some of them usually just for lighting their shops just for lighting their shops so um we discovered that that was a very big problem i even met happened to meet a woman who sells friday at markets so she was telling me about the challenges she was having she was having bad eyesight and this was affecting her health so we decided to start our projects we built a recall together contributed money together and amplified their shops about that in the markets so it's from the impact of what i saw myself personally so i saw the transformation even this woman imagine a year like you could see how happy she was it was very emotional for me and i think that was actually pivotal like seeing something you executed transformed someone's life it was very very um you've brought out my deciding to launch a company to provide access to this to a whole lot of other people out there similar challenges brilliant brilliant i love that i love that but now building micro grids and all of that what are microgrids so that our listeners were able to understand okay it's really my micro business sounds like a very big world so um we have um a centralized grid in nigeria okay so which we obviously know as so you work using a centralized grid okay so what microgrids are microgrids are small-scale solar-powered utilities can operate independently they don't have to don't depend on the national group they operate independently to supply energy the limited number of users in either community hamlets or in the markets clustering so that's what's um microgrids are small skills on solar powered grid okay so now you were announced as one of the winners um of this clean tech and online incubation uh program tell us how did you hear about the program and i would like to know what did that program do for you uh with all these ideas you have tell us okay the clinton whole program was very very it's i heard about the program on linkedin on where i spend a whole lot of time on links in linkedin okay professional network okay so i follow all on and i follow some organizations but before before that before that i i knew a couple of my colleagues okay um two of them who had already passed through the program in the first course in 2020 oh i saw it as i saw it as a great opportunity that if this people i knew could get into the program like the project we're working on conversation so i applied as well so the program has been very very instrumental so over the course of six months although virtually because of um government streets coving and several questions we it was an awesome program so almost every week we had sessions and this we are very very interesting sessions we brought in high profile speakers had speakers from different walks of life so um we had some lego experts we had entrepreneurs the ceo of energy even came on board teachers about fundraising so this this week this was a very very interesting program so i learned a whole lot it has helped me structure a company i learned how to communicate with all stakeholders and i also learned fundraising and several other things that um it's also helping us move forward in our endeavors college we are because this is yeah that's right this is par solutions brought to you by nigerian food partnership with all on and today we're talking about microgrids for energy access and economic productivity and that we do have uh emmanuel uh that's uh emmanuel tawasa is also the founder so economy is technologies of course you know where that name is gone from solar and uh economy and which of course explains the uh meaning of so economy and he just talked about microgrids because that's our focus microgrids for energy access and economic productivity is our focus so if you caught the earlier part of the conversation you would have heard him talk about what micro greeds are and you know did a breakdown of that and also he just talked about i mean uh some of the things that happened with the the clean energy hub and online incubation program now i'm going to ask you about your product so tell us about your product um that's economy shop lighting and that's economy charging what are these products about okay as i said earlier we discovered in the community the programs these shopkins we are facing so these problems involves the lighting devices actually sell at night so most of them stayed behind the evening times around six seven pm and they were using um all these tourism languages and generations for lights they needed to for them in their shops so this actually gives them power to sell at night so it lasts for about four or five hours so from 6 p.m to around 11 00 p.m so that's the super number that's introductory of this community charging is all about um station in the market where they can actually charge their phones and other devices so these are the currently the two products so that we have other products in the pipeline but these are the two core products we're offering in the market so they're all powered by solar right yes they're all bought okay brilliant we already have an idea what your market is so i'm not going to ask you that but i want to know now you have this 10 000 grand 10 000 grant from the incubation program uh can you tell us really what will this money do for so economy uh uh where are you now as a company and where do you want to go with this money what's it gonna do for you okay um interesting question um it was exciting when we announced the top seven um units of the ten thousand dollar grants so um this acceptable validates and the problem that we're trying to solve so initially we just started this off as a project so but it has given us a little validation that there's a whole lot of problems similar problems out there and that's um we are very very key in solving so um these ten thousand dollars will help us expand our american grades to be very close markets secret markets as we've been saying we have already done market assessments and we're trying to move forward as markets and set of a micro grid so there because obviously about 150 traders in the markets and we're going to light them all points um so coming lighting as a common charge so that's what they've been doing we're also trying to implement the technology solution to be able [Music] get um on the micro creature building different communities so i think that's key to our skill okay all right i wanted to say earlier that it seems like our program is becoming popular and for you to hear from your friend today i mean that's what we are trying to achieve uh to help young innovators like you move your ideas to market and uh it's a nigeria info it's gotta be popular that's the number one station for yeah talk it's good it's good that's right so you should be giving the credit to nigeria of course of course with the help of nigeria before go to what you want anyway but we know we have a lot of issues we have a lot of ideas that uh you know when they come to life we see that the power problems we have in nigeria you know can really be solved but i want to talk a little bit how tell us a little about your team that work with you i know you don't do all this work alone and how can listeners find you i know you're speaking to us from a worry correct uh how can listeners find you anyone interested in your product how can they find your social media website and tell us about your team team that work with you so we have an awesome team we have an awesome team although most of us are not physically present in the world but we have an awesome group um we have excellent mutual she's she handles our marketing operations um she she's an awesome lady very awesome we have um those operations then we have michael michael is in charge of our electrical engineering section and we have [Music] so we have mr cashier bona is the ceo of hcs business school who gives us advice on several things we are working on we have mr daniel who is also german embassy and he also guides us on several so it's an awesome theme um we can be found online on social media across facebook on twitter instagram and linkedin across all social media handles we are at okay that's it yeah wow very very interesting to know and um did you tell us the price of service your products how affordable are they are they free are you selling they're selling them how what's the cost of each of them exactly you want to sell that a bit more so that someone who's listening to you wherever they are as they follow you on social media they have an idea of what they are coming to i mean you've talked about the efficient efficiency of the product the idea behind this the you know then you know bringing that solution that solar solution if you like uh to your community you know standing from women using that local lantern to you creating this product so an interesting story but how was the cost like okay for the um for the markets which we have set up this micro grids already so it's very very affordable so we charge them for the normalizing charge hundred nanoparty wow so for those interested in um for the people interested in bringing this community they can easily reach out to us and then we can um discuss partnership and separate sense for them to force to implement such a similar solution in their community as well all right you say on social media you are at me so economy just spelt as pronounced all right okay beautiful man it was a delight listening to you uh talk i mean your story is quite inspiring started pretty young and from that time on you have been pushing today you can win a 10 000 grand a dollar grand and um i can see that there's a lot more you hope to do but with this this your initiative and this company wish you the very best but in the next say two three let's say five years where do you see your business your space what do you hope to to to have accomplished uh within that time frame okay um we are doing a whole lot of solutions so that's economy we are building um army tech guys and our team is mostly taking coins so we are building a whole lot of exhibitions to help scale these microbes across the country so we are building um slowly so in the past um two years we are just at this people responding to um um but we are building several business models to scale across the industry so the whole lot of people with this issue so 90 million nigerians without increasing assets and that's a huge problem and once you pray for companies cannot solve that so it requires a joint effort for everybody's service we are building solutions to be able to enable people to be able to solve these problems in partnership with us in different communities across nigeria all right thank you very much i hope in five years time i hope in five years time hopefully yes maybe um a thousand micro bits on azure all right well that's bold we'll hold you to that and um good luck to you and your entire amazing team thank you emmanuel for speaking with us today thank you collins thank you and thank you nigeria all right emmanuel lisa emeritus is the founder of silicon technologies and we've talked about meeting greets uh for energy access and economic productivity today power solutions makes a return next week don't forget that uh it's sponsored by in partnership specifically in partnership with all on which of course i had represented here the energy delights energy the communications officer of all on wisdom jumbo as a co-host for this episode i wish that was great doing this with you thanks a lot and just before we go i want to
