Drum Tech POV | We Missed Ourselves Festival in Mexico City
Waddup dudes :) Welcome to Mexico City! Our first video outside of America! I just landed and had to go straight to the venue. We're loading in and setting up the night before the show this time. Hey look! It's Pip! He is our stage right guitar tech. And Dylan! Our audio tech. Everybody remembers Chris. Our stage left guitar tech
It's obviously raining... :( The rain has us sad... but you know what will fix that??? You hitting that LIKE button right now!!! And subscribing if you haven't already! Thankyou!!! This is Tristan. He is our playback wizard.
Let's take a look at our drum riser. A little smaller than we're used to, but it'll do just fine. Making sure the decks are flush with eachother so the drum pedal sits flat. This is Alex, our LD, or Lighting Director. We have different flame units than we did on the tour we just finished. Less intense ones, which I absolutely love.
Nice and far away from Luke and I. My drum boats have made it to stage. Paul, our stage manager. It was in this moment that I remembered there would be a language barrier for this show lol Bro was gonna roll right over this cable on the ground lol Thumbs up are universal. Chris is losing his mind.
Time to start building the drum kit. We'll start with the rug. Make sure it's center.
FINALLY... Some consistent light. I aim for 195hz on the reso head of the rack tom. It's a little sharp so I bring each rod down about an 8th of a turn. This is our new Production Manager, Ernesto. I wasn't really feeling the tune bot today, so I decided to just use my ears for a change. I'll probably do this from time to time so that I don't become dependant on technology.
We're gonna wing it. People are always so curious about the triggers. Gonna bring each rod down an 8th of a turn again. I find 18" floor toms insanely easy to tune, so I'm not even gonna mess with it. This stage was leaking all over the place.
This is Logan, our front of house engineer. Incredibly powerful dap, right there. The birbs are back! Gotta drown out the PA being tuned to avoid a copyright strike. All cymbals are Meinl. 18" Byzance China Luke Holland signature Baby Stack. Luke Holland signature Bullet Stack.
14" Pure Alloy Hats 18" Byzance Medium Thin Crash 19" Byzance Medium Thin Crash. 21" C Squared Ride. Cowbell :) Welp, looks like I forgot to add the audio back here...
Don't worry the very next scene has drum audio lol The video is already 40% uploaded to YouTube, so theres no going back. The Remo SMT Clear kick head sounds so sick. Great for metal music. Giving the heads a quick wipe down. This will be show number 3 for them, and show 2 for the snare. Stage manager Paul, and the stage hands moving the riser to it's final resting place. Right under a big leak of course lol We ran out of time to sound check, so we'll have to come back early in the morning :( At least we got some pizza though! This is the closest thing to catering we'll have this video... I ate at the hotel mostly.
Sorry! I added a second camera to the mix to make up for it. You'll see shortly ;) My flights got all screwed up today, so this is the first time I've eaten. It's about midnight now, and we're heading to our hotel.
I am so tired at this point. It's been a LONG day. 5* hours. I sleep now. Okay guys... A new camera angle.
After a whole year of videos. Remember who did it first. Ahhhhhhh yeahhhhhhh 3rd person side quest activated. Pretty cool, right!? I think i'll get some cool shots with this thing.
And you'll actually get to see my face sometimes haha Any way... it's 6:30am We're headed to the venue to do a quick line check/sound check. BTW... Rimshot that like button for the new camera angle! We'll hop between the 360 cam and the OG POV view. Hopefully you guys think this is cool because it made editing way longer lol Chris planning out how much he can sleep after sound check lol Thursday is playing this festival, and I've never seen them before. I used to listen to them all the time in highschool.
TIme to undress these drums. This tarp is a pain in the ass. The wireless controls actually work really good with the new camera.
Time for line check! The drums held a nice tune overnight. Love that for me. Whoops Sometimes the stack rattles a little too much so I just spin the cymbals. Same old crew jam. Brand new view.
Thank god. Im trying to go back to sleep lol Rain is on the forecast all day, so I'm not taking any chances. I'll be at the hotel until 5pm, so I don't want to have to worry about the kit getting wet.
Logan mixing front of house "virtually" in the background from a past recorded performance. I have no idea when the band will arrive, so I'm taking a pair of sticks to the green room. Just incase they get to the venue before I get back. I hate it when the camera picks up me breathing lol Gotta make it obviouse so he see's it. I love accidentally nailing a thumbnail. Man, sometimes I wish I could watch the show from FOH for a change...
Logan was doing something very inappropriate. It definitely was not family friendly lol Dude, these go hard. Also, why am I eating Doritos at 8:30 in the morning. Sometimes time just melts together on tour. Back to the hotel to get some much needed sleep. This is Killswitch Engages tour manager, Allen.
He was on my flight to Mexico City yesterday. I sleep now. Aaaaand we're back lol It's about 5pm now. Our changeover is around 8:30pm.
Pip and I are going to watch Thursday's set. Whenever I watch a band side stage I always put my in ears in to protect my hearing. You should be doing the same. I was obsessed with this band when I was a teenager.
I had their whole album uploaded to my xbox so I could listen to it when I played Tony Hawks Underground. My drum riser so I can do whatever I want. Side stage sucks, so we're going to front of house. We definitely went the wrong way. Sorry bar tenders! Yeah... this camera was a smart purchase.
Wish it did a little better in low light situations though. The legends in Killswitch Engage. One of the best choruses of all time.
Changeover time!!! Y'all sick of seeing me mess with this tarp yet? I'm definitely sick of messing with it. Sounds good to me! I did bring the rack up just a tad though as the hands pushed the pyro into place. Kick drum works. Sick. Double checking that everything on the pedals is tight and secure. A quick line check to make sure everything still works.
My fans have arrived. No power for them just yet though. This drum riser is a little shakey so I know the fans gonna move. Nothing some gaff tape can't fix though.
We're gonna get some sick live shots with the 360 cam. I didn't have a radio for this show so I did't catch the countdown. 3... 2... 1... GO FOR SHOW We have a camera backstage that follows the band during their walk out.
I finally get to show you what it looks like! Highway to Hell is playing in the background. There's our boy! Luke gave me his phone and passport because theyre immediately getting on a plane to go home after the show. I blurred it because the internet is weird, and can't be trusted. Hey it's me! Yep I basically just sit and chill there the whole set lol Im looking out for certain things. Mainly body language. If he starts squirming then theres probably something going wrong. Yeah this camera is badass.
Here, Luke is telling me it sounds like his stack and china mic's are backwards. It's not a "show stopper", so I'll wait for the song to finish before I relay it to our monitor engineer. Now I'll tell the monitor engineer using my "talk back" mic. He tells me to go tap the mic's so he can see. He says there fine.
Luke says it may be china, and stage right overhead. I relay the message, and attempt to tap those two mics. Too late lol Ruuuun! lol So I switch to Lukes mix and check the best I can for myself during the song.
I film Luke's solo every night on his phone for his socials every night. Now you get to see it in action lol He wasn't stoked on this one so out of respect I left it out. Cowbell action.
That same camera from the walk on becomes the "asshole cam" during this song. Talking about his solo lol The camera follows the band off stage, and Willard forces them back for an encore at gunpoint. The shims that kept the staircase level came loose... I'll fix it.
The downstage "Volcanos" (big flames at the front of the stage) look awesome. I only turn the fan on when Luke wants it on btw. Thats why it's off. Now I take the cowboy back to Yoshi, our backstage manager. This part of the song will get me a copyright strike, so birbs. I can't remember what we were chatting about. Probably what food we had that day.
Or he was telling me about some new Diablo IV DLC. ohhhh he was telling me to download Overwatch. Luke - "C'mon man 3 matches and you'll have it down." Me - "I only play TCG card shop simulator now." Me - "I think you have to play soon."
Luke - "oh yeah." IT'S FANCY WATER. NOT VODKA. I forgot to show the flames above him. Yep. I'm still just chillin over there. He tells me to throw him some sticks so he can throw them to the crowd, but then he changed his mind lol "We Are the Champions" is blaring in the background, and Queen does not F around.
Gonna take his in ears over to the monitor engineer. Snapping a few pics for a possible thumbnail lol Let's tear these drums doooown. We're pushing the drum riser to the stage left wing, so I'm throwing all my stuff on top of it. The house lighting crew put all their lights where the drum riser is supposed to go... This annoyed me. There was a band that played after us, so we had to wait to load out.
Some terrible logistical choices made by the venue caused us to have to wait until almost 2am to load our truck. It was pouring rain again, but we ended up under shelter. Love me some stickers. We're talking about load out lol The whole day went perfect, until we got stuck at the venue for 4 hours after the show ended. Backline is usually done 30 minutes after the set lol Sick. Now we have a car alarm going off... Tristan, everybody! Let's get the hell out of here.
START TO FINISH CREW You know what to do! If you made it to the end of the video let me know! What did you guys think of the new camera view??? Thank you all for watching! This video was fun to make, and I like that you guys got to see more of the crew in this one. Elevator selfie lol Next week we have Aftershock Festival in Sacramento, Ca. Any of y'all gonna be there? Please like the video, and consider subscribing if you haven't yet! This one was a lot of work, so please help me boost the algorithm!!! See y'all next time! I sleep now. oof.
