I have often said that Convocation is one of my favourite times of the year. It's an opportunity to think about the future and the contributions that you, our newest Humber graduates, will make in communities locally and around the world. This year's ceremonies are very special for me, as they'll be my last as Humber's president and CEO.

Like you, I am beginning a new chapter as I retire in a couple of weeks. [ Applause ] ≫ That's two weeks tomorrow to be precise. Each graduating class that I have seen cross this stage has had to overcome unique challenges. All of you graduating today will now embark on something new , perhaps a new program, new job, the next step on your career journey, travel or a well-deserved break. All opportunities that have

emerged from the challenges of recent years. There was a time when the path to a career or establishing priorities for your life was linear . And the thought that your plans might not follow that path exactly in the time you laid out could be frightening. While as we know, those days are long behind us. Over these past few years, we have learned that everything can change in an instant , and as a result of our experiences of living through the pandemic, we are better equipped to respond to what comes next. Whether part of our plans or not.

In December 2021, the New York Times published an article Gushchin article entitled how we make sense of time by Elizabeth Dias. In this Article, Dias says that our methods of keeping time have shifted as we have adapted to stopping and starting elements of our lives during the pandemic. As a result, we have learned that pausing, reviewing priorities, taking a arrest or focusing on wellness is both important and necessary to adapt and succeed. In the Article, Joy Harjo, the United States poet Laureate is quoted as saying, I like to think of a new year being possible at any moment, as every moment is a kind of doorway. You can go any direction, although directions can be impeded.

There may be obstacles to overcome along the way, but now we know that we can start, stop, start again or move on and still succeed. What we have all experienced has changed us. You have persevered and completed her studies during a challenging time, and are better poised than any other graduating class to be lifelong learners.

The world of work you are going out into is not the same as it was when he began at Humber. The opportunity for innovation and positive change is now. And what you have learned about your field of choice and the experience you have gained while at Humber will help you be successful. Throughout your time with us, you have been learning about leadership, teamwork, problem solving, and many key skills that we'll set you apart. You learned about systems thinking and how to understand connections within a complex world in order to match challenges with solutions.

This past year has brought our interconnection into sharper focus , and you are ready to make a difference as a global citizen. We encourage you to be lifelong learners, think critically , ask questions. Be collaborative and inclusive, and embrace diversity in all its forms. Challenge the norms and lead the change you want to see. We already know you can do remarkable things. As you start your next chapter, know that you are now and forever part of the Humber family .

And no matter where you go, our doors are always open , and you are always welcome home. You are now one of more than 290,000 alumni who are the colleges reputation in action. While Al will also be moving on to something new, I know I speak for the entire Humber community when I say we can't wait to see what you do next. Congratulations. Thank you.
