How We Spent over $16,000 in the Boat Yard

How We Spent over $16,000 in the Boat Yard

Show Video

Recently. We encountered, a problem that. Was initially to take two, to three weeks and her have 2000 euros to fix in reality. It cost, around four and a half months. In over, 16 thousand. Euros this, is the, story of our, nightmare. All out. This. Is a situation that I don't completely, understand, and I'm not sure how much of it is my own ignorance lost. In translation. Laziness. Happenstance. Or, actual. Malice but, to quote to Napoleon. Bonaparte. I want to never ascribe, to malice, that which is adequately, explained, by, incompetence. And Tim Ferriss added, or busyness, and I would like to add or, laziness. Never. Ascribe, to malice, that which is adequately. Explained. By incompetence. Busyness. Or, laziness. That being, said I'd like to lay out this situation as objectively, as I possibly, can in the hopes that we, might all learn, something to. Set the stage the three of us set up from Spain close to 10 months ago as to, be expected from life as we were moving forward we, encountered, many obstacles that together we overcame, mistakes, were made and lessons were learned but, entering into Croatia, we, see the first signs, of real, trouble. The other day we lost reversed, gear, went. To put it in gear. And it wasn't, there. Scavenger. Jack shining up Jackson had to catch his flight to North America, to finish his degree in filmmaking. While Tara and I head north towards pula croatia where. We are scheduled, to film with made on the road UK, and have a balkan campervan, scheduled, for rental to explore croatia. We. Made a stop on the island of molly lotion, or friends of alessandro. Came and diagnosed, the problem with, the gearbox. These are lamella they allow you to shift into forward into, neutral and into, reverse by gripping and not gripping the gears the, ones in this gearbox, it's like, a Polish you know and that's enough for the. Grip, to. Make. To, make. Good. Connection, for the reverse. We, were told we should prepare for a rebuild, of the transmission, not, having reverse a big problem but it's not the end of the world because we could still move forward so we continued, north to our obligations in Pula this is where it starts to get weird, we contacted at Baris, in Marina Verona in pula, croatia patrick. Came to the boat and told us that it would greatly reduce the cost of time labor, and headache, to have the whole engine, removed rather than struggle in the cramped engine bay with a big heavy gearbox for hours, but this, would necessitate a, haul out initially.

We Thought this idea was absurd, but, then we came to the conclusion that if we could spend, a few weeks on land we could make some needed repairs and upgrades to Audion drive now instead. Of the original plan was at some point in the distant future to have a haul out in Tunisia Africa. Which is where Martin recommended, we also had a van for a week so this meant that we could leave Adi on Rudd on land in a safe secure location. While we explored, Croatia, the idea was beginning, to look all right the next morning as we were making breakfast Patrick, called in 45, minutes later he and this boat arrived, and they were ready to take us to the crane for a haul out the pressure of this sales tactic, is intense. We agreed, to the haul out this, is turning out to be an eventful day. Within. Two hours, our deann rod was out of the water in the engine was completely, detached, and she was prepped for open, engine, surgery. The. Following day Addis Patrick's, boss and his crew arrived, and we commenced, the engine removal. Before. Noon her old battered. But still solid heart was removed in the gearbox was on its way for, inspection. It was also determined that we needed a new clutch and that the parts would be difficult to find. We'll. Check if, we can to to. Find. The new. Part. Returning. To the gutted vessel slightly, dazed we cleaned out the engine bay as best as we could. This. Is where the situation, becomes really muddled. Addis. Comes. And tells us that they don't think that they can repair the gearbox because it's an old engine and it's impossible to find the parts and if they can find the parts it will cost around 8,000, euro to rebuild the gearbox, and fix everything his solution was instead of repairing it it might, be wiser to just shell out another five thousand, euro to purchase a brand new Yanmar engine from, him of course with a warranty, for security, for the years to come we, would be back on the water in three weeks and it would cost just, over thirteen thousand, euros, now he made some good points the engine is old in the parts where it can be difficult, to find and it's arguable, whether or not a new, engine is more reliable the, question, really becomes if you plan on crossing.

The Atlantic, and beyond do you want an old repaired, engine, or do you want a brand new one this was very difficult to hear and I turned to read it and I found a complete Kanzaki, KH, 18, gearbox, in the USA, to replace, ours it could be purchased for $1000. But shipping, importing. Installation. All said and done it would cost near eight to nine thousand, dollars we also looked seriously into converting to electric, as the dream is to one day be completely, off of fossil, fuels we're going to a factory to look at electric motors but, it seemed for us it was gonna cost at a minimum, of 12,000. Euros to give us maybe 30, minutes of motor usage, every couple, of days over 30,000. Euros would give us a diesel, electric system, that we could then maybe, be 30%. More efficient. Basically, in order for us to be able to keep any sort of schedule for filming an, electric, system was gonna cost anywhere between 30, and potentially, even over. $70,000. Meanwhile, we, asked addis if we could have our gearbox returned, because i wanted to see if we could find somebody else to fix it we, were returned, a box of gears, not, a gearbox, I'm still. Not sure how I feel about that we ended up going with the beta marine 38. Horse, our engine, over, our other seemingly, less ideal, options, with the decision, this costly, I was definitely not gonna let somebody pressure, me into purchasing. An engine that I was not completely, on board with we, ended up flying to Morocco for two weeks because we needed a change of atmosphere. We. Returned and we continued on repairs while we waited for the new engine we. Got a new Genoa. A. Professional. Sail maker here, in Pula, Elvis. No. Sunbrella. We've. Removed and reinforced, the davit plates we, extended the davits aft 30, centimeters, as well, as added cross supports, all completed, by Robert I stripped. Roughly, 20 kilograms, of unused, electrical, wire and hose from Audion rod we, save maybe five kilograms, as supplies, and cleaned up the distribution panel it took me two and a half days to buff body on rod.

And. We. Completed, many other smaller, projects. It. Ended, up taking around, seven weeks for the beta marine engine to arrive and once we knew it was coming we were moved into position so the crane could access, arjan rod. Wow. It's. Really pretty a quick. Aside we were never able to sell our wounded but functioning, Yanmar 3qm. 38, engine, because we didn't have papers. For, it to. Me it seems like if you live in Western, society, specifically. The European, Union then you live in a society that values, documentation. Over form, and function, in this, hinders. Creativity. And I do not believe that a socio-economic, system, that. Squashes. Individual. Creativity will, endure, but I digress, because, the engine was delayed by two weeks it arrived three, days after. The workers at the marina took off for holiday because, in Europe it is common, for many people take a couple months off of work in the winter and, it's told us that he would not help us and instead, we should try to find somebody else to help us because he would be on holiday but all the mechanics, were on holiday, and so the only help that is actually, provided. Was a number, for, a contact, and split a man named Igor who, he bought our beta marine engine from and then after that we never saw or heard from addis, again. I. Had. Resolved, to install, the engine I've removed the old coupling, and I found that the propeller shaft was 32, millimeters, in diameter and our new coupling, is made for a 30, millimeter propeller. Shaft we, need to remove the propeller shaft and turn it on a lathe to reduce the diameter by 2 millimeters. I do not have access to a metal shop and I do not have the tools to pull a propeller, finally, I contacted, Robert who had made adjustments to, our davits, he, agreed to reduce the shaft replaced, the Cutlass bearing stuffing, box seacock, strainer, basket and, install, in align the engine off for 2000, euro plus materials we, thought this was a bit steep but we agreed is we had finally found someone, to help us. So. Then does, this corrode. Because. You have this same comment, no no, bronze doesn't. It's. Been four months and three days in today we, are installing a, new engine. It's, like a hundred and thirty eight kilos. Which. Is around 60, kilos lighter than. Yes. Down. Little, bit more it'll, be more. Food. Stop, go. Back okay. We. Need to be down I. Will. We. Can stop. Stop okay, we can from. Go, go. Go, go down. Down. Little. Bit up up, just a little bit oh, stop. We. Did. The. Right back. So. Far so. Good. Going, out and cut the tube a little bit maybe five centimeters, and. Okay. So. Here's, the problem this. Is too. Close, we. Have an, adapter. A rubber adapter it's, about five centimeters, has to fit in there and there's. No space between. Here and this, is the coupling the. Transmission, the. Stuffing box this. Pipe right here this. Through-hole we, need to cut that and then, move this stuffing, box aft maybe. Five centimeters. And then we have to cut the propeller, shaft, so. That it's the correct length and then, we can have, this space in between here, the. Two couplings, so. That we, will, be able to attach, on but the alignment, looks good, we need five extra, centimeters, here. In. Front side Roger, okay. What. We're, great up front no yes. But the way the. Okay, and, then now. I'm going inside. A new burst a. Zombie, -. Gotcha. A the most potent you is formal enough pretty my mo forward. Yes. A little bit. Okay. Stop. This. We must cut yep. Eight. Centimeter, eight, centimeters. You're hot. Except. You. Say maybe it's. Hot and it's. Going. Yes. With. Motor. Is. Up. I'll. Be fluent in Croatian, in no time. Dora. Down.

Donate. See gluten. Crisis, darling. Get. Down, Golan. Don't. Let but. Fool down yes. Perfect. In. Gym, installed. Now. Just to improper. Alignment secure. It down and then hook it off should be ready to start up tomorrow, I, think we'll give it a test start we, installed, the raw water cooling, system and, the fuel lines. Then, we realized the exhaust system needs, to be adjusted with a high-rise that right, there that's the problem otherwise, it would run the risk of water entering back. Into the engine and blowing a cylinder from the rapid expansion of the water vapor the next day we added oil and, coolant and we hooked up a new battery and tried to start the engine for the first time. Robert. Created, a custom high-rise for around 200, euro the, other option was to wait four weeks and spend over 300, euro to get one from the war. We. Installed the high-rise and tested the engine while supplementing. Fresh water for the raw water cooling system we. Used a temporary transparent. Exhaust tube to be certain that all the water was straining into the water line. Like. A sheep. I. Couldn't. Stand the thought of throwing the old yanmar out and instead gave it to Robert we. Determined, it was time to launch our neon rod. And for, four and a half months, of bleeding, money in suffering. Stagnation. We, watched in amazement as, Audion, rod was put back in the water. As. Soon as we were in the water we started the engine in check for leaks, starting. The motor for the first water. Test. Ready. Give. It just a little bit of throttle. For, this module dragon, shows. The table at each emergence Malcolm dragon but your meal a cold I. Know. They, they. Asked if they can put away the. We. Were then promptly, shoot off the docked people we were settled in we, were literally being pushed off the dock and told to go find a slit as it was raining in the wind was blowing around ten knots they, told us they needed the space immediately to, lift another boat which, they lifted an hour and a half later once safely in our slip Robert, helped us install our long-awaited, Kubik, mini wood stud. We. Thanked Robert for his honesty, his hard, work and his flexibility. And then, we prepared, to set sail. The, period, from September, 2018. To, January, 2019. Was, one, of the most stressful and, by far the most expensive, period. Of my life but, that's, good because I learned that slow of a valuable, lessons, here are three of the many lessons learned from our nightmare, fall out number. One never. Let anybody hurry, you. Especially. If you have to pay them slow. Down slow, is smooth, smooth. Is fast. That comes from the US Special. Forces. Lesson. Number two, regular. Rest prevents. Downward. Spirals. Rest, regularly. Or you will exhaust, yourself and when you're exhausted you, will make a series, of poor decisions that. Will begin momentum. In a downward, spiral first. You, have to halt that downward, momentum, before. You can turn it around and, create, upward. Momentum, to, prevent a downward, spiral from, happening in the first place regularly. Rest. Working yourself to death is, not helpful for anyone in lesson number three, always. Expect. Things, to be more difficult and, to take more time than, you anticipate. In the DAO de Jing Lao, Tzu wrote something, like this in chapter 63, the, stage, expects. Everything, to be difficult, and therefore never. Encounters. Difficulty. This, concludes, season. 1 of, SV, Audion, run season. 1 was 13, episodes, and took about ten months to create it, produced around a thousand, dollars in revenue, and costs over 50,000 dollars to create and that's without me. Learning experience.. wondering why the mounts just didn't get moved forward 50mm- seemed like there was space(?) haven't watched to the end yet..

And now you are repowered and ready to get back to cruising!

15:40 After getting that engine into place, I would remove the rudder, then take a chop saw and cut the hull to remove the entire assembly from the rear. Afterwards do a little fiberglass work to put the hull back together! Did the S.O.B. thief that removed your Yanmar want to charge you a "disposal fee" for the engine you had no "proper papers" for. Would be funny if you had some hand bills printed with his picture and "Reward: Wanted Dead or Alive, for Grand Larceny."

Great video as usual :)

"Da water don'ts come in" the sweetest words for a sailor.

I think for what you paid out you got a good deal. However; I do think it was totally unnecessary too. Probably should have listened and gone to Morocco over the Continental Thieves at that Marine Shop. Regardless there are 2 mechanical issues that jump out at me. The first is the Problem with the coupling not fitting the Prop shaft...Why not Modify the Coupling rather than remove the engine again and remove the new modified prop shaft yet again; simply modify the coupling which could have easily come off the new engine. Second the Distance issue with the new engine sitting too close to the prop shaft and then again removing the engine yet again to again remove the new prop shaft to cut off the extra length on the prop shaft..Why Not modify the engine mounts for the needed extra 5mm ? ...OK; with all that said; I still think you came out ahead..If and ONLY If this Beta Engine is the Real Deal. This should show everyone that the highest value in this world; is Knowing/Connecting/Networking with the correct people that can help you along on your journey. A capable machine shop or Engine builder could have easily fixed your existing transmission issues. Having to shell out big bucks for new everything could have been avoided if and only if you had known the correct person that would have fixed the old existing engine setup. There-in lies the decision to choose Europe over Morocco . But all in all You did Good.......So happy for you getting to experience the world at such a young age. At 57 years young my largest regret is not Traveling when I was young. TIME..if you are going to waste TIME for crying out LOUD waste your TIME on pursuing Fun, Happiness, Adventure, Experience...{ I can not for the life of me say that any of these pursuits were wasteful/but alas some will}...rather than Wasting your precious TIME acquiring Stuff, Materialism and ofcourse supporting this Evil Maximum Profits at all costs world wide system of Plutocracy !

Stoked you’re on a boat now. Badass video, will patreon you for sure.

Dylan, I have followed you for a long time. You are a great videographer ❤️ If you worked on your narrative skills ... you would be one of the best! The cadence of your delivery sounds like a high school kid. You’re such a great storyteller. Please learn to tell your stories smoooothly⛵️

Love your channel, keep it up! I love what you're doing. Hope your channel doesn't get deleted too.

"Smooth is fast" is actually a saying of the Brit racing guru Jackie Stewart.... But I suppose an American can "steal " it.. :)

Bro you got completely ripped off every step of this, all you needed was one piece. Could’ve got it fabricated for dirt cheap instead of doing a full repower.

Sounds like you learned the best of lessons. I really hope this doesn't turn you away from sailing; since planning is the essence of good seamanship.

looks like you did half the work, they should give you a discount. These kinda experiences definitely build character, lol.

Great video. That whole part at 14:00 tho smh. Wouldn’t it have just been easier if the crane operator and the man installing the engine called each other on the phone to orchestrate the raising and lowering with a direct line of communication? Great perseverance tho, talk about hardship!

I think your mechanic was a thief most of them are, you can have your clutch rebuilt in a lot of clutch shops in US the trains was probably OK that why they gave it to you in pieces

I hope he bought you dinner before he screwed you. All you needed was a clutch plate. A small part you could have gotten made for a few hundred Euro. This was painful to watch as they just kept tricking you again and again. You didn't need to be on the hard, you didn't need the engine lifting out, you didn't need a new engine, you can't set the alignment properly on the hard...you just needed to take the spacer back out and have another one machined up. That's Croatia permanently removed from my cruise destination list. The one good point was Robert, and I think you were lucky to find him considering the situation you were in.

Hi Dylan great series well done to you all looking forward to further adventures. one quick question the introduction music track who is it please my wife is going crazy to find out. Many thanks.... Best wishes and fair winds for 2019..

Your take on the EU was classic

It breaks my heart seeing people ripped off and they didn’t even do a professional job dripping all the coolant over your boat . I do this job for someone but hope one day I can work for myself and help people like yourselves without ripping you off and being genuine . Money isn’t everything

I’m glad u guys worked this out

Love you videos but had to smile to the part « don’t want to use fuel, I’m unhappy let’s fly to marocco ». Should have visited the Balkan, so beautiful. And for the holidays.. They just wanted to get rid of you because that’s not true ;-) Oh and try to go to the USA with a boat when you’re not American, very funny. Hope everything will be fine for you now!

I don't think they get it. 163 comments. I bet they all have a U-haul packed and ready to take with them. The hell with learning and having a great time living. Pack it up, sit in front of your TV and wait. You can take all your money with you. By all means....don't go spend it and see the world. That's crazy talk

EPIC

Great Videos and some good advice!!

typical bullshit docu made by amercians? its common to take off work for moths?... r

What has documentation for a motor to do with "creativity"? It's about legality you little man child. Also the idea that it is "normal" for Europeans to "take a few month off in winter" is downright idiotic. Face it: You got ripped off like the little fools you are. Dishing out your little nuggets of ignorance about Europe does not amend that.

Jan Endrik if he pulled the motor out of his boat, you can be pretty sure he owns it. The amount of bureacratic hoops the eu makes people jump through is ridiculous, face it

Your not too embarrassed to put this up? Don`t you get it yet? You were bent over.

what a nice honest man robert is

Beta Marine engines are the best. Buying the new Yanmar would have been a mistake because there are too many electronic parts that REQUIRE a certified Yanmar technician to come out and initialize. Imagine flying a tech to Bora Bora to initialize your fuel pump or something stupid. Yes it has happened a lot! Also the flexible coupling was a great idea, Brunton makes a more durable Sigma Drive coupling by the way. These items will greatly improve your engine's life span, noise production, and vibration. I really loved the video!

A U a MILIONAR ???

Where’d you get 50 grand, dude? Asking for a friend

Could probably save a lot if you lived in a van

They immediately needed to lift another boat... which they lifted an hour and a half later ROFL

Didn't like this series before this episode.

Me too , but now its diferent. And i Will gave him smoll contribution.

Hey Dylan! Absolutely killing it dude, love everything about your videos are how they are made. Keep up the good stuff !!

Wow that was expensive but boats and engines always costs money .My boat is much smaller 27 feet with 50 year old SAAB 10 HP . My replacement will have to be electric . I hope to use newwer Ultra capistor made from Carbon which hopefully will become available from Youtube Channel "Robert Murry Smith " end 2019 early 2020 " searxch under carbon Battery for twizzy

As I learned on very first used car purchase experience, always default to 'no'

The amount of times you were cheated, mistreated, and taken advantage of in this video was infuriating.

Great video ! "europeans usually have two month holidays in the winter" please tell that to my boss.

Ouch ! Good advice at the end. From my armchair perspective I would have installed some oar locks and oars for my reverse gear . Great job ! Looking forward to seeing more.

I would never be a sailor (Land lover) BUT I find these videos so interesting! Thanks for showing us your world!

Don’t piss the mechanic off , you can’t align a engine on the hard , hope you have a few spare couplings. Don’t piss the mechanic or boat yard people off they can and will make your life hell , I know I did to loudmouth know it alls who had just enough knowledge to be dangerous.

USA USA Frik off snow fakes got a set sukre gored a book

I feel sorry for you man!!! But that's how we roll in the Balkans... I hope you haven't run out of money by now...

Robert, what a soul. Awesome story and video production

Thanks for this amazing video.

Great video. We know exactly how you guys feel, we recently had to replace our Volvo motor. it was a very expensive exercise but so worth it now having a motor that won't let us down and can literally go anywhere!! If we were to buy another boat we would definitely check every single part of that engine or ideally buy one with a new one already installed. Another lesson we learnt.

Americans commenting on Europe like it is one country never ceases to amaze me.

Bro, is this your first boat? ... Get ready for more of this! Have kids they are cheaper than boats! :D

Robert was a hero - great you gave him your old engine..

you were taken for a ride Dylan, you replaced an engine because of worn final drive components, i understand the urgency and lack of time and location but, i own a 30ft classic sloop and a 40ft RV and it makes me so angry and sick that "professionals" in these niches wait like vultures to capitalize on people. Your yanmar would bring around 4k on ebay or similar. we could have bought you a seaworthy cruiser here in san diego for 16k. but i digress, congratulations job done lifes short, onward.

Dylan, I love your channel. It’s probably in one of your early videos, but tell me how much you paid for the boat originally?

Dylan Magaster I’m so sorry you have had such a setback. You have a good attitude though and will ultimately do well. I’m pulling for you.

$10,000

Great video Dylan! You are an excellent narrator and fast becoming quite the sailor. That last scene was awesome! Makes it all worth it doesn’t it??!

Great video brother! Glad to see you keep going. "slow is smooth and smooth is fast".. the tim ferris show is awesome.

Never own planes or boats! Rent rent rent

Sarah Dell It depends. Sailboats below 27ft are cheap and easy to maintain. Costs increase exponentially with length.

Lessons invaluable, and pricey to learn the hard way.

Thank you for sharing the lessons learned, they served me well today.

Great job Dylan, old sailor to young, you give me hope for the future of us on the planet. Look forward to your travels ahead without drama from the engine room.

LOVED IT! The music and ending were purrfect!

All good life lessons . Thanks !

Awesome!

Sorry you were ripped off in Croatia, but you could have sold the old engine without papers in the EU don't know about Croatian local laws though... Maybe you don't know but EU countries are still sovereign nations. I think you were a little scatty to do that in Croatia... About holiday... What are you talking about? People work all year around of course they are entitled to holidays. Don't judge others before looking at yourself mate, people in EU pay a lot of taxes and social security so they do have some privileges. Other than that i hope you're lucky with your beta marine, heard good and bad of those engines, but never worked on one. But i think parts are easy to find, they are cheaper than volvo or yanmar. Treat it well and it will take care of you! Fair Winds!

Taking a few months off over winter though, we don't really do that. A few weeks but not months. I think they told him that so he wouldn't wait.

Dylan, I think you might consider renaming the vessel either CERRIDWEN, the old Crone, or the MORRIGUE, the Death Mistress. She has not been the Young Maiden, ARIANRHOD ( Yeah, I have read the Books of The Mabinogian...probably before you were even born). Glad you're back in business, though. Glad, too, that you see the positive in this, and got to see more of Croatia. If you have learned those three rules of Life at your young age, you are way ahead of the game, and in fact ahead of a lot of people who are my age and older, and I am over 60. Now remember rule number four, which is O'Reilly's law: Murphy was an effing optimist.

i always heard a boat was a hole in the water that you poured money into...

+Sailing Great Expectations true. sorry to be a Debby Downer ha ha.

Yep in exchange of love and happiness!

Beautiful boat.

The intro song gets me every time. I will watch most of the videos because of it.

me too but what or who is it and whats it called,.>>>???

$16k? Wow that is more then I made in a year and half. Its great that you have that kind of cash in the bank to pay it.

Hey Dylan, I recently found your channel when looking at your small house series. Ive been watching your other videos and enjoy your style, personality, presentation and joie de vivre! As an old geezer I'd like to support you, but all this patreon stuff looks a bit much. Is there a way to just paypal you some dosh without all the sign up crap?

Yessir. Email me at Business@dylanmagaster.com and I can send over my paypal information. Thanks so much!

See, most yachts are consumable recreation devices with relatively cheap construction and a limited lifespan to begin with; especially when previous owners couldn't be bothered with constant maintenance. Sort of like the average RV. It's not meant to be a money-making, industrial strength vehicle like a small freighter or tugboat or diesel/airbrake highway tractor. When you get some consumer sailboat used, a lot of it is pretty much used up. So you either use it lightly and occasionally in trivial ways from then on, or you have to totally gut it up front. IMHO $16K and months of time to piss around with an engine, drive train and sundry systems is not too much out of line for a boat that size and vintage. The shocker is that you've maybe only seen the beginning, and it will continue until most other systems are also replaced or rebuilt.  (How's the rigging?) It's a lot like used cars, really. When you get a vehicle new, you then should constantly stay on top of it until either everything is so worn or corroded like the frame, engine journal bearings/rings, and tranny that you sell it by the pound, or you get buried in it as an old man because it's so obsolete no one wants to touch it. Otherwise someone has to sell it early because they're dumb enough to have ignored oil changes, etc, or stuff is just decomposed. Then the next guy has to replace the engine and a hundred other things which are also worn out and not replaced. Nice looking boat though.

Great vids!

Big love! Great lessons learned

Dude, you're a man now. Good work.

This struggle reminds me of the early days of owning and building drones.

Starting with the removal of the engine, you got scammed into buying a new engine. Unfortunate! This scam is prevalent around the globe.

just $1000? really?

1.5 years salary in croatia. currency extraction from artistic, creative american, complete.

Ouch! what a challenge. New engine and transmission will give you peace of mind in your travels. I'm boycotting patreon, I use subsribestar, they support all creators and all content not just the ones that are socially acceptable. Everyone should be heard, not just what the corporatocracy deems acceptable.

Damn! the moral of this story comes back in vanlife this less cost, $ 16,000 repair it's great to be able to travel anywhere in the world aboard a ship but when the mechanics break it's not given lol

Wonderful job getting through all of that! When a problem is met with tenacity and resiliency, this is the outcome! Huge congrats on the new motor and miles of water and adventure ahead of y’all! From Texas!

LEGEND!!!

Rule number 3 is sooooo true. Glad you're all back in the water with a shiny new engine!

Like that SF comment! Remember the 3 rules 1.Look Cool. 2.Don’t get lost. 3.If lost, look cool.

Doesn't matter boat or RV, always avoid buying old junk

more Tara

Kakvi prevaranti hahahaja

Nikola Golubović balkancu ko balkanci

She looks good

You bought the right engine Brother boat looks great good luck

On Distant shores they said that the zink part stops corrosion, I think?

Not needed with bronze though, as it doesn't rust in the first place. But for the other metal parts that are exposed the zink part is sacrificial.

PMA all day baby, you rule hard man. Adis seemed like a real Crotian-scammy piece of shit. Love all the uploads, keep them up!

Thanks for sharing this story with such honesty.

Wish I could fly to Morocco because I need a change of atmosphere.

Talk about a money pit

If half of that happened to me, it would have been game over, but I have like $20 so thats why.

hey thats boating , good little engines - enjoy , life is not a rehearsal.

so now you have a beautiful girl crew and a beautiful new red engine,,, lucky guy..

BIG LOVE ❣ THE NEW SEASON IS GOING TO BE INCREDIBLY AWESOME

This channel should have more than 1M subs. The fact that it doesn’t is BULLSHIT

Dylan Magaster CONSIDER IT DONE

SHARE!

when they have you by the curlies! great post guys

Love the Channel Keep 'em coming!!!!

Lesson 0: Never stop in Croacia

it is amazing how ignorant you Americans are!!!

WOW D, So much respect for you brother! your a champion man! #TinyHouseLife on a boat..

Wow! You must have a lot of money.....

holy print through batman! That weave on the gel coat is intense.

It's too bad the Croatians screwed you over.. it's too bad.. except for them being a former Nazi state in which the Catholic Church operated Jasenovac death camps where a million people were killed, it's actually a country with amazing islands and coastlines... as for boats.. yeah, they're a hole in the water for cash.. "Bilge Out Another Thousand" the fancy old acronym.. cheers!

I hate old boats...

Sorry to say this but from were I am sitting you where well Ripped OFF

I fucking loved this ep. My dog. Keep it up

I like the hull color. :-D

Thanks for convincing me to never get involved with anything marine

Bronze does corrode, just not quickly. you're doing a fine job of her Dylan, well done. It's a pleasure to see you learning.

Damn, those Kroatian's fucked you badly. Anyhow just take it as an experience and move on. Just wonder why you not harness the power of your followers.....

7:10 "he made some good points". Nope. He knew the scam he was going to run the first moment he saw you and that engine. Thanks for the video. Mental note. Smaller boat. No inboard.

A stranger in a strange land is always easy to take advantage of. I hope over the years of hassle free motoring from the new engine will make that $16k feel very worthwhile. Feel better about the added value you've put into the boat by the time you come to seel. Well done all of you.

Are from Kansas say your port of call , just wondering I'am from Hiawatha. kansas Rt 36 north east . Moved there from Conn. Did all my sailing on Long Island Sound. Feel very sorry that they took you so bad. Had a contractor take me when I first moved out here an did really know the business. learned real fast has not happen again. Did you do any sailing on Milford Lake? Your boat looks real nice. Next time you need something repaired to check around first before jumping check YouTube there a lot of good people in the sailing world that can help you fix problem. Hope your sailing an your filming goes well. will check in once an a while.

#1 you shouldn't have gone on that long of a journey Without spares. #2 when it happened you shouldn't have listened to that Conartist and headed straight for Italy or even Greece where you could have found spares or even a used final drive.#3 don't ever do anything in Croatia sure it's a beautiful place and also Insane.

Moral of the story; make sure your boat is in tip top condition before you leave the US.

Robert was a nice guy

Too much stress. Just sell the whole thing, bail and go to Disneyland -- The Happiest Place on Earth.

dan siwek: The BetaMarine 38 with reduction gear and accessories alone runs $13k. Given how much electrical and machine work had to be done, along with four months on the hard, and at the end of the day I maintain he made out alright for buying a brand new unit. Craigslist is great... when you can either plan ahead, or you’re not in some far-off spot in the Med with communist red tape slathered import regulations. I would have made the same choice... spending half as much to keep a well-worn coal burner chugging might have saved him $8K, but sometimes a fellow sees value in going all-in with his chips.

+Andrew Noyes lol...I check ed there after I made my comment, thanks man.

I can introduce you to my friend Craig, he has a list, he calls it Craigslist.

16 K for a sea worthy cruiser you say? Really? Where would that be in san Diego friend?

Location, location, location... Shipping and importation fees dictated that a used gearbox from the states would be prohibitively expensive, and those expenses were not dictated by the yard. It sounds to me like this yard had reasonable rates in both on-the-hard storage and in labor rates for its technicians. I’ve heavily researched BetaMarine engines, and he paid only marginally more than what a Beta38 costs in the states. As he says in the video almost halfway through, the real issue was that trying to sell the old engine amounted to a legal hassle as he had technically “imported” the engine without the paperwork. Yeah, 2000 euro for a week’s worth of labor sounds a bit steep, but a man’s gotta eat. I’m a welder by trade, and $125 an hour may sound steep, but you’re getting access to 10 years’ of training and expertise, $25000 in capital equipment, and all that wherever the broken object is. So a 4-hour repair running $500 covers a living after I pay my taxes, insurance, and expenses. Dylan weighed the cost of refurbishment or replacement with old parts given availability vs replacement with new. His boat has a new, premium product that will serve him well for years. I’d say he made out reasonably well, even if it drained the bank unexpectedly.

If it's so prevalent , maybe you should wake the F up and realize all the oceans are level. One level, sea level. Altitude is measured from sea level. Let go of the lies

That was an awesome video, very enlightening. I can understand you have to look after yourself as well as your boat. Good luck with your travels

U rock guys!!! Thank u for giving us these insights!

You got took and F all at the same time that would have got cost you tops $10.000 they took you way to much

I may have missed something, but why wouldn't you just add an outboard motor and call it a day?

Boats are big money no matter what the size. They say they are two happiest days in a boat owners life. The day they buy it and the day they sell it!

All you need were new clutch disks. I'm sorry you were taken.

Malice. They don't care.

Wow, what an ordeal you went through. I am so glad that you have a new engine and won't have to worry about that any time soon.

Where in Tunisia did Martin recommend you go?

"In Europe it is common for many people to take 2 months off on in the winter" .... Jeeeez he sounds like Fox News just splurging out poop like its gospel. Oh and "Europe" isn't one country. It's formed of many. Remember, the ones which basically made up the citizens of the US not even that long ago. I mean my local pub is older than the US constitution.

Well about the enging,e think about it from a buyers point of view. Unless he is on a super tight budget, buying your engine,he would also have a problem finding parts and selling the boat then later on without proper papers would be as hard for them

he have to put this video up so others can learn from it! life is about learning and anything you can learn is worth every penny. ;)

I know its so weird.

+ekfinn it is not communist red tape, it is just normal procedure. He brought a vehicle with an engine into the EU from outside, and to sell the engine you need papers. But you can only sell stuff that you have properly imported which he didn´t , he just drove it in and normally the law would require to also drive it out again, and not sell it in country.

Wasn't the engine working fine in forward? The clutch plate should not be that hard to find and have delivered. this was totally insane. The foxes ate the chicken that came to visit. Shame on that yard! That yard should have a worldwide bad reputation.

Ever see the cartoon Hagar the Viking . His ship was sunk at the dock and the marina guy said " You're welcome to go elseware for an estimate" Cheers Great video .

This series has been awesome! Look very much toward series 2! Will share the shit out of this, given half the opportunity!

That’s horrible how bad you got ripped off, thanks for sharing, check out ( Sailing Nandji Ep 113 ) a young Aussie couple how they took control Of their gearbox problems in exotic places

You got off cheap considering all the work that was performed. Here in New england that would have set you back about 28K

Thank you robert!

What are you talking about, there are no requirements for paperwork to sell a boat engine in the EU.

You did get pushed hard into a corner but in the end if all you spent for being 4.5 months on the hard and a new drive unit along with all the labor was $16K, you did pretty dang good!!! Many of the commenters below have little clue as to the cost of new marine equipment or a the real value of a skilled craftsman needed to do such an install. The first guys were bunk but the second craftsman did provide the true service and value you needed. And yes boats can be expensive but the adventure and joy they return is well worth it!!! Looking forward to more vids Dylan and seeing you out on the water. S/Y Titanium

Ahh, the joys of owning an old boat...and relying on someone, of unknown integrity, on how best to fix it... : ( Always, always get at least three opinions when you can’t make a judgment call yourself based on personal experience. And when those three or more opinions don’t all align, challenge each with the other person’s advice, with your bullshit meter dialled up to 11, and see how their opinions stand up. You also have a huge number of subscribers and while they’ll be many “armchair experts”, there will be many who could offer valuable advise - I’d have put out a quick real time episode about the problem and sought others opinions. That would at least have given you good material to challenge what the “expert” on the scene was saying. Anyway, easy to be wise after the event I know, but in my experience relying on one man’s opinion who has a vested interest to sell you more, is setting yourself up to be ripped off. We all like to think others are as honest and well meaning as our selves. But the sad truth is many are not... Fair winds.

You got taken for ride at every turn at that boatyard. NOT A TRUE REFLECTION OF EUROPE AT ALL

With a little "toxic masculinity" (I mean using common sense, basic tools and intermediate understanding of your boat and its mechanics) could have solved this problem mostly yourself. But you seem to be pretty well off, so it is entertaining to watch plebs get scammed out of their money.

Rip OFF box of gears handed back to you.

This is why electric motors are the future.

You are really influencing my life and my way of living it! I am one of your biggest fans! Love your attitude, knowledge and intelligence!!! Hope you are enjoying your time during your trip:)

I agree not a new engine but a new brain to be suckered in to that kind of rip off. The nearest bar would have got you all the advice needed over a few drinks.

He worked for a fishing boat for a week and he manage to have 1800 usd. Here in my country you need to save 4 months of nett salary (of office workers job) to have that money. I guess it depends on where you work and what you work on. And he mention on the other video that he now actually got more money than his normal spending from youtube when his channel started to have more views in 2017... That way he could save much more money.

I totally expected that to happen to me if i were in foreign country doing some unusual business like hauling a boat. Especially in a country other than US or any EU country. Scammers are everywhere.

how get rip off in Croatia ;)

Living aboard needs a skipper that is on top[ of things although this dude is a cool guy and all he needs to get himself up to the tasks at hand and do it well. Taking off and flying to Morrocco and leaving his boat in need? Its clear this dude is not good at decision making he has a boat it sails he could have gone anywhere and found many engines they are everywhere new used and mechanics too. Perhaps he cant sail without an engine LOL...

Another one who doesn’t know the the “four F theory”! If it flys, floats or f***s forget it, as it will cost you.

A mans gotta know his limitations - Clint Eastwood

In the US that would have been fixed in a week or two max.

All though I will say rewarding that Robert dude with your old engine was good of you. He will get a chunk of change for it.

10:33 to 10:53..totally agreed...couldn't have said it beta maself!

Very immersive experience. Keep doing this dude.

14:15..down....STOP!!! :)

You are the idiot and that's why you got milked.

Terrible, but remember you're on a SAIL boat, people have been circumnavigating the globe for thousands of years without an ENGINE. There is little you can't do with sails that you can do with an engine. Good Luck on your future adventures.

I had a similar experience with a mechanic here in Spain. Once they have persuaded you to let them take the engine out, they have got you over a barrel. On re-installing the engine, the mechanic removed the salt water discharge hose which originally ran over the top of the engine and above sea level and replaced it with a new one at a lower level – a while afterwards water siphoned in destroying the engine. I believe Beta and other modern manufacturers recommend to always fit an anti-siphon valve and there is a specified distance above sea level relative to where the discharge hose enters the exhaust elbow.

So rich kid gets screwed by unscrupulous crook and turns it into an anti EU rant... Yep, you were taken for a ride: happens everywhere. Sorry they could not accommodate your busy schedule with their vacations! Well, my poor lad, things are not that bad if when you feel stressed you just jet to the Sahara for a few days to relax and recover... Honestly, stop complaining! And as to your lessons about life that things take more time and more money than planned, welcome to the real world. Took you a long time to learn that one! With such a resentment against the EU, you should move to the UK, sure they would love you.

I don’t trust Greeks or any one from that area there cheap

Croatia is one of the most corrupted countries in europe, so.....

Personally, if I was in the position with the new engine... I would have simply moved the motor mounts forward 5 cms (that's why you have motor mounts... To adjust the engine to the shaft). Save you time (take about an hour total) and money. You took a bath on this since they saw you as a mark from a mile away. I'm glad you have all that money to waste.

Nice vid, keep it up.

In short, run into a dude named "Addis" who knows you, punch him in the mouth?

Hmmm. One thing I learned in life if someone is trying to rush you it’s probably for their benefit not yours, someone giving the hard sell is normally not a good thing.

Now I understand.

id rather have a boat without an engine, or one with a simple outboard engine. a whole series of problems eliminated in exchange for being at the complete mercy of the wind and your own skill. Fine if you dont have any deadlines to meet... Not so good if you operate on a strict schedule.

you got taken for rich yanks with to much money what we call MUGS

I think something got lost in translation ! I have never heard clutch pressure disc/plate called "lamella" which is a biological term.

Clutch discs or syncros !

This is what happens when you visit cockroach countries. Corruption is normal course of the day with these people.

All you had to do was move the engine mounts forward 8 cm, even if you had to cut the brackets and reposition the mounts. In that case you would not have had to repull the shaft and cut it. You could have also put a new hose and a line around the the hose to position it up and prevent backwashing the engine. Clearly you were taken for a ride by the boat yard and they did not want to help you after you did not purchase the engine from him. You could have also called Yanmar and told them your situation, they would have advised you on where to find a gear box. Flying to USA and bring it in your luggage was a better option than sitting four months plus in a boat yard. Live and learn, great you collect money by these videos, ppl are paying for you to enjoy the school of life. You made everyone in Crotia boat yard rich. The fact they destroyed your gear box was a direct insult to your intelligence. Slow is smooth, smooth is fast applies to repetition of excellence not being taken advantage of by ppl who you thought you could trust. Good Luck out there, be safe.

Two wrongs dont make a right

I'd reckon stick with something under 30', which will be easier and cheaper to maintain, and also small enough for an outboard to be a practical alternative to an onboard,.. allowing for both better maintenance access, and elimination of thru-hull. Would also make sculling easier if needs be.

Before Ive even seen the whole video I can see a scam coming,...they turned up almost immediately to haul out, dont they have any other work lined up????? What a massive rip off.

+ben southwell It's a shame as it's not his fault really as he wouldn't know what to watch out for. But we need to start calling these scammers out every single time, so new people don't get tricked like this. Being nice and giving these places the benefit of the doubt is directly hurting people. And 100% right about the bar. Always find where the sailors drink, mention your problem once at the bar, and you won't be able to fight the help away haha.

Great video, you documented the whole experience very well. I've never heard of the astern clutch pack failing due to wear before the ahead pack since ahead gets much more use so if the clutch pack was the problem I would have suspected another cause. Sometimes you can shim a clutch pack to get a bit more life out of them. Also in the video when you referred to the "clutch" when speaking about the drive plate which transmits the power from the engine into the gearbox. That part is the drive plate but it is installed on the flywheel where the clutch and cover plate would go in a highway vehicle. I'm not sure why they did not recommend boring out the coupling rather than turning down the shaft but maybe there wasn't enough material in the coupling to allow that. You would have had no problem selling that old engine in Ireland or UK without "Papers" but then its much easier get things done when you speak the same language. It's a shame that you had such a stressful and expensive haul out and you are right about taking your time when making big financial decisions however at least now you have a new engine and gearbox which should be more reliable on ocean crossings. Thanks.

Love it. Guy quotes Napoleon, Sun Tzu and "US Special Forces" Whilst being ripped off at every turn. lol

You were conned you didn't need a new engine. I put in a 2nd hand Beta engine for half the price so far so good.

Great that you had the $16K and the money to cover your expenses for 4 months in Croatia (not to mention your vacation to Morocco).  Not a bad life considering that most of us live paycheck to paycheck and get just 2-3 weeks off a year for a vacation.

And you wonder why most people in the UK want to be out of Europe.

Great video , Youtube is full of young people buying old sailboats and then learning that Boats are very expensive to repair and bring up to cruising standards . There lots of old sailboats out there that wouldn't be a deal even if it was given to you for free . I do believe Yanmar builds good motors I've owned (2) and found them very reliable . Safe travels skipper!

Great topic, liked the quotes. Thanks for sharing.

you are american they see you coming !

lesson 6 : u r a genius and a wise man

Yea that guy only wanted to sell a A new engine and fast he needed that plan vacation. Isn’t it possible because your only using it 1% to get a electric out board engine. And turn the propeller on backward? Or ? You don’t need that much to move a boat on water. I was pushing a high car barge ship with one hand on a pier. In Guam while waiting.

congrats brother

The stove is so cool!!!

I have a diesel-equipment & marine business & you were fucked over multiple times there.

Dont get sucked in by the fossil fuels thing in preference to electric , it’s not there yet !!

Tough sh!t to be ripped off like that. But please take one piece of advice: You won't make many friends, i.e. potential supporters, if you speak so preoccupied about Europeans and their 'socio-economic' system, at least not in Europe. Just think: if your engine had been better 'documented' in the first place, maybe you would have made better qualified decisions to start with... Our socio-economic system does not 'squash individual creativity', just because you weren't able to monetize on your piece of scrap. That kind of attitude is arrogant. Period. Arrogance and naiveté never work well together. Think about it. Also, your permanent begging for money does not gain you much sympathy. If your 13 episodes of this season only brought you 1,000 $ revenue, maybe you should ask yourself, what the reason may be. Just a little hint: Maybe you should take a look at the SV Delos channel. There you can learn how to approach this kind of business successfully: Humbleness leads to sympathy and sympathy leads to patreon supporters. Think about it! Sorry for passing these harsh words, but I think being honest will be more helpful for you than just moving on to the next sailing channel.

And above all. Shit Happens It's painful now but in the future you'll remember it as an ADVENTURE!!

Please add a fresh water strainer into the engine cooling line. That way it will stop crap from getting into the block and you can see if any debris is building up. And I thought a drug habit was expensive. Well you have to go with the flow. Moving on!! Just tell everyone that those dudes are manipulators. The internet will get them. Change the oil in that new motor religiously and more often than recommended. And put a 2 micron cat filter on the fuel system!! https://www.xtremediesel.com/xdp-cummins-cat-filter-adapter-xd232?gclid=CjwKCAiAnsnjBRB6EiwATkM1XmHOK-AXaQE3B2TR3qXom_dHtL2Y-VBTz4DCTxOwbraSqLPn2hKLVxoCZS4QAvD_BwE Good Luck!! Water kills diesels!!

Fuck those Croatian fucks, they shit on their country. Im sure that there are just as many good people as assholes, but these guys have tainted their own country for over 33 thousand people. Thats less business for them. their loss.

YOu own a boat and you didn't know bronze doesn't corrode? Come on man.

Synchronizers!! The term synchronizer may refer to: In automobiles, a synchronizer is part of a synchromesh manual transmission that allows the smooth engagement of gears.

Good old mecanic crooks lol. An engine is an engine .. a gear box is a gear box .. its been using the same tech for years.. a clutch can be service an resurface. a machine shop can cut any gear. send the old parts and spec and they will get it done in a week. Looks like you have been pressure into buying a new engine and thats all.

Another lesson to be learned is not to take on workers if you do not have checked their references with foreign sailors. Croatia is known in Europe to be a place that rips of tourists (companies and the government alike). An example: Two friends went to their boat off season to replace some old wires. One was the boat owner, the other a work colleague of his. The boat owner was fined by the government (Euro 5'000) for having illegally "hired" a third party (his friend) to work in Croatia without a work permit. Therefore, be very very careful... In Italy you would have easily found somebody to fix your old engine, especially in the Veneto region not far from where you went on land in Croatia with the boat. Good luck!!

This was so damn entertaining.

Qeustion: Why did you not contact Yanmar direct surelley a big company would give you their support with spares

Having a positive attitude is a great way to go through life. EXCEPT, when dealing with unknown people who stand to make money off you. I know nothing about mechanical issues, I am a Woodworker. But, allowing that guy to pressure you to HAUL OUT was your first mistake. Second was having a REVERSE issue worked on in a nasty Country like Croatia. Sure, you COULD and WILL get screwed even in 1st World Countries. But, you were RAW MEAT to these guys. They were giddy with pleasure in finding a sucker. You could have waited on the REVERSE issue until getting back to civilization. THEN, get a second and even a third opinion. In my field, it is BEST PRACTICES to get THREE (3) estimates. If all 3 are close in numbers and details, then throw out the highest and lowest and take the middle one. But, having work done in a 3rd World Country, where you do not speak their language, and stuck in one yard, CAPTIVE, is a recipe for disaster. They saw you coming. I winced when you asked that guy IF the bushing on the point of exit from the boat for the shaft would corrode, when I could see from the video was BRASS, as it needs to be. The locals are still telling that story and having a good laugh. I did not see the prior segments. So, I wonder WHO is footing the BILLS for all this.

Batteries take several days to charge to capacity (in compete sunlight) and have a very limited range compared to diesel.  So how exactly are electric motors the future?

Yeah that irritated me too. And the flippant comment about stifling creativity...

Pula - bin there. EAST MED is very expensive for refitting marine stuff... You should be more careful with the gear. Your life might depend on it one day.

I don't know anything about sailing or engines but the second he says, take it out so as not to work in confined area, I lose trust.

WHY AMERICAN SAILORS ARE SO F,,, BORRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRING,,

Please wear safety glasses when using grinders. I've seen people lose eyes.

I read $16K but hear €16K. The latter is more like $17.5K.

You got played.

Thanks for posting and sharing. Best wishes.

Hmm , they should have known there were no parts BEFORE they pulled the engine . It was a case of having you hooked with no option to go somewhere else .

"Slow is smooth and smooth is fast" ... that's actually from the Sniper Training guide ...

they played your ass

Boat: Bust Out Another Thousand. Get use to it.

Well you either pay one way, or you pay the other way.

Dayum. In Wilmington, NC, especially for a Monohull, there is storage areas that will haul the boat for you and even let you work on it by yourself if you want. Heck, I'm Moroccan and have lived in Italy for a fraction of my age and I would pick Morocco over any European country to work on a boat. I was surprised to see the the tools a regular diesel pump shop has last year when I visited (I'm a mechanical engineer to say the least). Moral of story, do your homework first.

You need to re route your hoses and secure them ASAP that looks like crap man I wouldn’t trust that in the middle of the Atlantic , it’s not the leak at the dock that matters it’s the one caused by engine vibration on a seemingly blunt edge.

I understand that you're frustrated, because you couldn't sell your engine without having documents for it, but I don't understand saying that the EU crushes creativity with requiring you to prove that this is your engine, what engine exactly it is you're selling and other documentation for it. The EU funds art, has provided the European people with the longest lasting peace ever seen on this continent and a freedom of movement which would be unthinkable without it. As a citizen of one of the European countries, you can live and work in every member state without having to become a citizen of that member state or applying for a work visa. It has never before been this easy to create something here. Selling an old engine as a private person doesn't really fall under the category of "creativity" anyways. And one other point: did you consider that, just maybe, they were bullshitting you on that too?

what a queer situation, good luck!

I love my Atomic IV...lol

Man, that was hard to watch. I have the same gearbox and experienced the same problem. After some research I figured how the wet clutch worked and the fix is to use inexpensive shims to take up the play due to wear. As long as the plates have ridges, you can shim it up, fill with fresh transmission fluid and it's all good again. It's a little tricky but the gears and how it all goes together is available online. It's common issue with this type of transmission. You got stung by those crooks big time. The 'clutch' plate they were fiddling with and suggested changing is actually the drive damper and looked fine.

Robbing dogs That’s why we’re leaving the EU Brexit

Love you guys!!

Rubber adapter = drive saver. It’s for when the prop hits something. The plastic brakes and not your motor.

What kind of boat is this

This is the state of current mechanics. They can't fix, they can only replace.

What a shame, you could have driven to Denmark and got the engine from my brothers old boat, a volvo penta with 48 horse power complete with a gearbox and in perfect order, if you had paid him 500$ he would have been happy.

When you are stupid - you will have to pay - that´s life

Buck Turgidson thank you thought I was the only one that noticed too bad there wasn't one for the art of theft LOL he'll learn like every generation the young seem to have a difficult time asking for advice and a decidedly chosen to learn the hard way and sometimes expensive God bless be well

Shout out to Robert... he was your hero for sure. Safe travels you two.

Obvious question. Why didn't you just move the engine forward? It's adjustable. Unbolt, move forward, re-bolt.

Well I'm not a 'boat' mechanic but I've certainly been an automotive mechanic and without a doubt you have been properly robbed, screwed and barbecued! Otherwise a well put together video! Best wishes for the future!

Holy crap... Wanna cross oceans? You need the following.... 1. A boat worthy of crossing oceans (usually not a 30 footer with mechanics designed for day sailing). 2. An engine with extra parts on board (check out those that have tried to cruise across oceans on electric.. It sounds great until find yourself in heavy winds and without electricity and you're dragging anchor into a may day situation with no power). 3. Money. Those 3 things and you're a yachtie!

pretty certain - the first group where trying to stitch you up - they missed - Beta - great engines- the old adage - in for a penny in for a pound. - one thing that might help is an outboard fuel primer bulb - in line from fuel filter to engine make it easy to reach - you will thank me - saves a bunch of drama

Watched. Enjoyed. Liked. Subscribed.

Great video, and love your philosophical outlook on life. Have you read the stoics - Marcus Aurelius, Epictetus, Seneca? You sound like you have, so I'm pretty sure you'd dig them.

For all the work you got done that's a bargain. Of course, I'm speaking from USA prices.

Well, compare the avg annual salary of the US with Croatia and think again ;)

If you go to Pula .....Pula means dick in Romania :))))

One of the most painful sailing videos I've ever seen.... Good luck

I'm 6 minutes in and they are telling you they can't even source a clutch for an incredibly common yanmar marine engine? WTF? I don't even want to watch the rest and find out how badly you get screwed over. Why did they need to take the boat out of the water again? So they can hold you hostage? I smell bullshit.

BAHAHA clueless loud mouth american says europe is a non creative society and will not endure BAHAHA oh american. you sir have no idea. BAHAHA wat a fools these americans are. oh by the way. your gear box was an easy fix. im a mechanic. you got totally shafted. haha still laughing about the creative thing. omg. hilarious.

The story they told him about needing documents for the engine is obviously complete bullshit and he believed it like an idiot. He ended up giving away a perfectly good yanmar marine diesel probably worth over $1000

tis true - they are designed to be shimmed - but the first set of grubs where setting him up to rip him off - he was assessed as a soft touch

yep i was laughing my ass off. spouting knowledge like he is some guru and learnt all these lessons but couldnt google how his gear box works and chat with a few tradesman down the pub to work out what he needed to fix it. sails out with a new engine and gear box LMAO

Delos fixes most of their own problems and they NEVER stop at a european dock for repairs because they are so corrupt.

LOL they kept his perfectly good, old engine because he didn't have 'papers' for it. Then he blames this on Europe? What a complete fucking mug! There's one born every minute. Just as well daddy put a wheelbarrow full of money in his trust fund.

yes thats obvious to you and me. but as you can probably tell by this fake poser wannabe-spiritual guys outro. hes all talk and BS and no brains or knowledge.

It might already have had one before they arrived :)

I've literally binge watched this series until now. Sooo good. Well done. Very enjoyable. Looking forward to seeing more!

High pressure sales.. I hate.... I feel for you glad you got the motor in and will be Safe for some time

Build your parts

*I’ve caught myself, over the past couple weeks, humming the opening theme song, randomly on a daily basis* You all are doing a great job putting each episode together; keep up the great work!!

yeah that qm series is old for sure. Prob would have gone with the Yanmar, nothing wrong with Beta either. But worldwide support for Yanmar is a safe bet in the farthest reaches of the globe. Little diesels are expensive, even if its an 11 HP single.

I had almost the same experience with my transmission on my businesses truck. Broke in the spring, had to purchase 2 transmissions total, utilize a friends garage, and 2 mechanics total, and it was back up and running in the early fall. The whole experience improved me as a person.

Holiday for 2 months wow I'm living in the wrong country. I commend you making things happen and doing as much as you can yourself

That red sure looks good. Maybe next time pick that color of lipstick before you let some greasy Europeans fuck you. Fucking trust fund kids lol

Sorry to tell you, the guy telling you the bronze cutless bearing won't corrode was lying to you. You definitely DO need a zinc anode there. The bronze will succumb to galvanic corrosion just like any other metal under the salt water. Look up the Anodic Index on the internet. Bronze is more cathodic than SST, but not by much.

Nature take its time and everything gets done why can't we

The name of this video should have been (HOW WE GOT FU.....K.IN CROATIA) not the best of places to make repairs.

Best of luck enjoy

they might have sabotaged the rest of the engine

That's crazy they try to rob you big time

Get the brand new one

Beta engines are excellent. My experiences of Croats and their marinas is not good. They are mostly catering for rich Austrians and Germans and are used to charging exorbitant fees. Stay away from there.

You were robbed ...Parts are not hard to find and you payed way way over the odds for the work done ...Learn to do it yourself

What a thriller! great job!

This is a MAGAster mess!

B.O.A.T. break out another thousand. :D

wow bumer! we went trough a similar disaster in the Dominican Republic 2 years ago. I totally hear you. How old was the old engine? No issues with the transom?

+Mango Authority Speaking about arrogance, it's interesting to observe that you obviously fall into the same preoccupied generalization mode about Europeans, as 'Dude' about their 'socio-economic systems'.  There are 1 1/2 times more Europeans than Americans on this planet, and we do not like to be judged upon in such a manor because of the bad experience a naive greenhorn had with one foul apple in the huge basket. So please think before you use expressions such as 'douchebag', they might fall back on you...

@GNUFZ Dude had been scammed and you give him a lesson. How nice of you. He has every reason to be angry with europeans or any earthling if you wish. He just wishes to express his opinion in a way he does and ffs he has a point. You surely can express yourself as you wish too. But honestly you are just a being a douchebag. He will have to claim mountains to reach your level of arrogance if you think he has not learned a lesson and need your pathetic input. As of "permanent begging for money" you must have watched a different channel. Feel free to go back to it.

+bust6665 But it's true. I have seen all episodes of Delos and have been following for years. They were in a dock in New Zealand, The Philippines and Grenada. They haven't ever been to Europe with their boat.

+GNUFZ Your probably right, just avoid the nonsense from the start.

+bust6665 I guess they NEVER stop at a European dock, because they have NEVER been to Europe... That set aside, Croatia is not Europe. They have in fact only been EU-member for few years. Go to a German, Dutch or Scandinavian yard, or to most French, British, Italian, Spanish, or even some Croatian adds, and ou will be served properly. As always, the best protection against corruption or fraud, is the use of common sense. Something, this crew is obviously missing.

Come to Africa (Cape Verde). They fix here, not just replace. I got my old outboard engine fixed for $100 when everyone in Europe and the Canaries told me it would be better to buy a new $1500 motor. That being said, I got a full rebuild of diesel injector put and 4 injectors €800 (no vat if you paid cash) in Cartagena Spain. But before that, my 1981 40ft Jeanneau cost about €40k to refit and prepare for world cruising. My old Perkins engine was and still running great. A classic motor that can be fixed anywhere. Diesel mechanics love it, and prefer it over new engines. Cheers, from Cape Verde.

no offense but thats like 4 months of youtube income... maybe 3 months?

hopefully you learn but somehow i doubt it. seems your solutuion for everything is "throw money at it" this is generally the female solution. men solve. fix. find better ways to remedy> i think you are this way because you have never had to work hard for anything. if you had. you'd a learned to protect it.

A fool and his money are soon separated.

Hello - You are great and fun to watch... Nota : Your cutlass bearing may not corrode but your shaft might... I would keep the zinc close...

Wow. I'm so sorry you had this experience. As other viewers have pointed out, you were taken for a ride. As a lifelong boater, my religion on cruising is this: 1) Never be in a hurry to get from point A to point B, and 2) Fix everything yourself except for underwater components such as props, shafts, transducers, cutlass bearings, thru-hull fittings etc. For these components, have the yard do the work so that if the job isn't done right (eg, there's a leak) then the subsequent haul out is on the yard's dime and not your own. You will be intimidated by many projects. So what. Get over it, track down a manual and start reading. Google and YouTube are your friend. DIY will often take longer, but that's ok...see belief #1. When something breaks in the middle of the ocean, you'll have a better idea how to fix it because you'll be practiced. Good luck.

For words of wisdom, how about? " plan for the worst ... hope for the best " . Thanks for sharing your adventure and all the best in what's to come :-).

4:49 does that say Kansas? Do you have your sailboat registered in Kansas?! Edit: Just looked at his about page and he's a Kansas native, like me!

Great 3 rules

Wow...

You were so hosed and taken advantage of. You made all the typical mistakes and money was stolen from you.

The foremost lesson learned is don't set out on a around the world trip with an engine with thousands of hours on it. A rebuild beforehand would have saved you well over 10 thousand euros. You can move/pull an engine with your boom, a haul out was unnecessary. That engine only weighs 3 to 4 hundred pounds. Use multiple halyards at different points to support the boom. Adjusting the spring tension on your transmissions reverse clutch plates could have been all you needed to make the reverse function. This could have given you time to come up with a plan for proper engine maintenance.

You couldn't sell your old engine? I hope your fucked it up so no one could use it when you left. Also you were in fucking Croatia, what do you expect?

This is what happens when morons sail a boat.

Lol I went to have my transmission oil changed on a Geo Tracker once and the grease monkey dug his knife down into my drain plug and proceeded to show me metal dust and I mean extremely fine metal dust that had collected on the magnet. He informed me I had major transmission problems and for 800 dollars he could rebuild it. I looked at him like he was from outer space and told him I only came here to get my oil changed. He shrugged went about his business and thousands of miles later that transmission is still shifting and working as it should. You got screwed plain and simple, a gearbox should be the last thing to wear out if properly maintained and they take very little maintenance. Next time do a little research before you pull the trigger.

One way to look at is this is a tax write off since you use it for work!

The Beta is a great engine. I had to change my old BMC Engine two years ago as head had gone and it was a question of putting thousands into a rebuilding a 40 year old engine or getting a new one. I got a Nanni N4 38HP which once installed cost more or less the same and I am based in the South of Ireland. The new engine will be nice and quiet and economical and as its based on a kubota block you will have plenty of spares no matter where you go. Happy sailing

Damn that was stressful just to watch! congratulations!

god you are a dork "Ppl ova here would not by my engine ya'll - god damn communist fascists squashing individual creativity by demanding documentation over my word" :///////////

Its bulshit jugoslawia bandits farmers all its lie. You can sell what ewer engin in Europa and repair to new all gearboxis eazy to send to Poland and they make new ewen for no small money.

Greetings Dylan! Been getting to know you and the crew through your vids, I just had to comment. You bet, keep with your plan! Some sound advice in the three lessons you outlined, no doubt reinforced this past fall and won’t be soon forgotten! Some sad parts to this story unfortunately. The three guys that rushed you into the engine work, I wonder how much they actually made compared to the stain they’ve put on their country. Also sad to see so many ignorant comments thrown at you 10K miles away from behind a computer screen. A little bit more understanding on their behalf probably would have been more productive. Comes with the territory I guess. But, ultimately the victory is yours! Your yacht has been wisely re-powered, dispensing the 40 year old Yanmar. With a boat of that age it was inevitable. A wise skipper addresses problems proactively before being forced to address them reactively. Had you lost the motor or the tranny in a blow while trying to power off a lee shore, then you would have had a more serious problem. The last seen where you’re closed-hauled pounding through the waves & doing your wrap-up was a fitting epilogue - the only improvement maybe: Ride of the Valkeries playing in the background (oh yea). You’re sailing away, plowing on to your next adventure. Can't wait to see it. Rock on!

yeah u probably right about that everybody wants to have "written security" about everything so they don't have to bother really judging by themselves in the EU, but, wanting to become a software engineer, I start thinking, well then just do the documentation, its not that big of a deal and u have another standard about information and u improve backwards compatibility. so all in all u can just be a creative mind and document all the stuff ur doing (with given standards of course) so it is possible for other people to "join in your creative mind" so papers are not to bad of a thing since u get used to them but yeah they can be quite annoying

Yikes - brutal. Nice ending, I liked the lessons.

That was painful to watch. He seems to be a nice guy, but clearly not very "street wise". That was a prime example of how you gonna get ripped off in that part of the world. I feel sorry for him though, it was a very expensive lesson.

Crisis costs $$$.

Another nail in the coffin for Croatia. Sad.

+Mango Authority Thanks for proving my point. Idiot.

+GNUFZ I'm not American, nor European. There are 14 times more people on this planet than europeans. Or 8 times more than USA+EU combined. So yeah... clearly you are an entitled douchebag. And I don't care if you like it or not - you can go fuck yourself. I claim you as the same scumbag as those who scammed Dylan. Not all europeans are the same, but such idiots like you are even worse. Make "whateverthefuckyoulivein" great again - is all can be said about you. Brain damaged self praising redneck whinnies. Now you can go be offended as long as you like.

Boat-bucks

$ or euros?

they seen you coming

A diesel engine will also last much longer than its gasoline counterpart. ... Properly maintained, most mechanics agree you can expect to keep a diesel vehicle on the road for a solid 30 years. They do, however, require some special care.

now think about a boat motor only runs a few hours a month that 30 years tunes into a life time .. you got taken sad ..

Well, when you say "Europe" (11.10min) clearly state the country;-). Some countries are more solution oriented than others and therefore should not be held under the same banner.

Hey guys, enjoyed your unique style of filming and editing, entertaining and also educational !! keep up the good work !! Jp from Bahamas

Oh man... this hurts to watch... 200eur for that stainless down pipe? That’s £75-100 at any exhaust shop... and you could have just moved the engine mounts forward 5cm instead of cutting the cutlass through hull and prop shaft, and you didn’t even need a new engine, just a clutch, and gearbox... and how does it cost so much to transport the trans from the USA? Man am I glad I know my stuff when it comes to engines and mechanics, You got swindled so bad...

3 stuges

Nobody wanted your POS motor. What does this have to do with "creativity". Then you run off to Morocco for a change of atmosphere or whatever you said. Pretty big game for someone who asks for patreon money. SHAME ON YOU!

My good friend owned a Roberts Off Shore 44, I sold the Volvo Penta engine That went into it back in 1981 It is still operational. Many good hours of sailing the coast of British Columbia Canada.then he went south to Austrailia New Zealand for a time Then off to South East Asia for many years. We both worked together at the Yanmar Diesel Distributorship in Vancouver Hope this new engine stand up for you.

The United States military has allowed you to enjoy the longest period of peace ever on the continent without the countries there having to pay for the real cost of it. You are welcome. Back to the regular scheduled programming.

yes, i always thought that marine engines have no clutch. And these torque dampening springs are loose, but only problem it can make is a bit of extra noise

+Freelectron yeah cus seemed to be alot of fluent English speakers there to chat with..

Sorry for your woes .. hopefully things go better for you. I learnt this same lesson, but with buying used cars. While cheaper initially, the total cost of ownership is much higher than just biting the bullet and buying a new car (if you have the means to do so, of course).

Pula, Cr. Love that town! I sailed out of that harbour! Best people in the world, great laughs and clown cars!

as a retired marine rigger at big shipyards, I can't believe they hooked their crane into the lifting eyes of the engine. This is not only very dangerous, but it fucks up the eye on the crane, they should have put small shackles in there and then lifted. If anyone I knew did the way they did they would have been fired the first day.

Vaughn Utube

Hmm, is Hanlon's razor really from napoleon? :) REALLY? :D

10:30 So are you implying one could import engines into other countries without any paperwork or dealing with customs enforcement? When did that change? ;)

what an annoying person.

Love the mini wood heater, hope it's working well.

My suggestion, before ever spending that sort of money again get on the internet and ASK questions. Hate to tell you but I bought a brand new 36 H.P. 3 cyl. Yanmar for my John Deere utility tractor, cost = $3,700.

Nice job, a great video and you seem to be pretty mechanical.

*And the most important lesson of all , ... - while in former Yugoslavia countries you must be very careful who you deal with !!! There are a lot of the motherfuckers-swindlers over there. - Consider this as a priceless advise from a Polish sailor.*

Great story, guys. I appreciate your honesty. Though it looked like a great yard (love the boat mover), I'm not so sure about their staff. Thankfully, you found Robert. I hope all is good now with your new diesel.

Dude, that's a well inspiring video! Nice work and a great story. Happy sailing :)

BTW, your book recommendation is ironic. Did you read it? Did it say that Billioniares, Icons and World Class Performers routinely bend over for ruthless mechanics? Or, sail their own boat or help their mechanics?

If you needed a new engine every time a Yanmar transmission needed service, there would not be so many Yanmar engines in the world. The reason so many sailboats have Yanmar engines is because of their reliability and the worldwide availability of spare parts. As so many have observed, you were taken advantage of. It is a good thing you seem to have more money than common sense. And, you know what they say about a fool and his money. Kudos to Robert for saving you from his even less scrupulous countrymen, but did you get any consideration (credit) at all for for your giving him your working engine and transmission parts? And, finally, on reflection, don't you think it would have been possible to have sailed to a more competent and honest facility anywhere else in the world and had your tranmission issue resolved in less than 4 1/2 months for less than 16,000 euros or dollars, as the case may be?

A lot of armchair quarterbacks are giving you a hard time, but my opinion is a bit different. Yup, you spent 16K but you know have a new engine, transmission and lots of associated new parts. Seems to me that money buys you a lot of piece of mind for future cruising.

EIGHTEEN THOUSAND DOLLARS BECAUSE YOUR $400 CLUTCH WENT OUT? Thank goodness I was raised poor and learned to turn a wrench. Vultures like that raise my blood pressure. That was a completely unnecessary engine replacement.

You are having a great life...What are you doing to finance this passion? My savings would have been topped out.

you can sell the engine as is without papers. having a maintenance logbook just increases its value. you can also sell a car without papers, just can't drive on the road without sorting it out. the engine is just a part. the only thing is that they didn't pay import duties on it, but its already in the eu and nobody gives a f. you can bet your a that they sold it to someone.

So cheaper to travel the world by plane yea

jesus what an idiot ,get in touch with yanmar, yourself, it might be an old engine but i am sure you can still get spare, or buy a second hand one many boat yards have a few lying around or try ebay.

Next time try a proctologist, it's less painful.

he could not sell his engine as no paperwork, but damn sure robert will resell it

It sounds to me like you all need to go to some kind of marine tech classes and actually learn something about your boat and your systems. Working in the marine trades myself, I can confidently say that most people in your shoes, on such a long journey, know how to work on their own boat. Get knowledge, save money and avoid being taken advantage of by the yards.

Poor little rich people.

F&¤# me you got screwed. BTW hybrid marine in the UK makes good solutions for your new engine. http://www.hybrid-marine.co.uk/5.html

Rule one in Europe We never trust Eastern Europeans

It seems to me that you were seriously scammed by that yard man. Shame to say it, but I don't think any of that was necessary. They just kept up selling you and you kept going for it. My single piece of advice to anyone that doesn't know much about engines... Call and contact a few mechanics, ask them how you should proceed with the repairs. You could of avoided all of that and gotten the repair done for nothing in comparison to what you spent. But that's life isn't it? You live and you learn. I certainly hope you learned from this experience and don't make a similar mistake in the future.

never ever trust eastern europeans lol

you were stroked ,,, big time. but whats done is done. Shame on the yard ,,

Thank goodness we have no scammers here in the Philippines! (joke lang)

Join a sailing club and learn from people who have sailed for decades. Race in some regattas to get your skills up. Crew with other people. THEN consider buying a boat. A yacht is not a campervan, the sea is not a road. And please don't encourage anyone else to follow your stupidity.

The last country I would like to be in emergency situation is Croatia coastline. They know how to take many from your pocket

I truly enjoyed it

Look the American tourists have money to spare. As you probably figured out the first guys set you up. Take it apart so you can't motor. Then refus to fix it because it's 'better' (easier for them and more profitable) to remove the motor. If you had refused they would fixed that transmission for a small amount. Then moved on to another sucker. Once they got you to agree to remove the motor they new they had a live one. Like the bull said to the cow stuck in the fence "When you're in trouble not everyone who shows up is there to help". Live and learn.

I can se some negative coments against people in Yard in Pula.Ignorant people do not understand and do not care. That is problem. What do you think you can call Yanmar and have parths delivered promptly for old engine and Gear box.Ha ha ha.Guy was happy and on his way.Old engine with no papers to.Where do you have shop you can sell it.It is scrap.Milion working hrs on it.Geat box secon hand or repaired,ha ha ha.You want it for your boat. Do not think guy is stupid he made search and it was his decision. He could leave boat in the yard and search for second hand engine in Italy.Trieste is over hill. And for this haters that hate Croatia.Long live Croatia

What a cluster with the output shaft.

I lived in europe (all my life). Never heard of taking 2 months off in winter. WTF kind of FUD is that?

In short a tourist getting MUGGED OFF big time!

Was this yard run by gypsy, job with yacht still in the water move engine forward on beds remove gearbox rebuild gearbox refit and test 2 hrs in gear whilst tied to the Quay side..price £2000 sterling.

You got scammed. you know it now. the best thing you can do is just dont get scammed again. Thats it, best of luck.

He even admits the engine doesn't need replacement. You can only turn a wrench so far if parts are NOT available and if they are it may take a awhile to get it imported so he went the best choice in my opinion install something that parts are readily available for and plus it's new. The problem is when he purchased the engine everyone went on vacation for 2 months.

'it is common for people in Europe to go on holidays over the winter' Never ever heard of it as an European - wut

Take your rest...like a European holiday? No-one takes months off during winter in Europe. We do have decent time off though. I recommend Americans should try this!

I think anyone could have told you that any "deals" a westerner gets around those parts usually would be even worse....

Those Croatian Crooks and thief mechanos........saw you coming with good Money to scam !!!!

Shout out to the savior Robert! Awesome to see him give you a hand getting back on sea. Unfortunate to see how the rest of the yard workers treated you, but I understand we all have different cultures to adhere to.

The gap between your world and reality is bigger than the smile on those guys faces that totally ripped you off. Sorry man:/

Robert went up the street and bought his new to him yanmar a clutch and put it in his boat lol ...robert made out good

I can't even watch the whole thing

I had to learn a similar (but less expensive) lesson on a motorbike trip: do all necessary repairs and maintenance at home, on the road (sea in your case) it will be far more expensive for multiple reasons. At home you have professionals you trust, time and calmness to make decisions and time to check everything; but you probably know that by now, learning it the hard way, as I did :)

Replaced a Mercedes quality engine for a Yugo quality... Genius

You got riped off

If you watch these idiots your IQ will go down

Morons. 3 hr job to remove the transmission in water

I don't see how not being able to sell an engine without verification is the West stifling creativity. It seems to me that having papers for a used engine, is in fact valuing function. Truth is more important than creativity. Any how, truly sorry to hear about all your troubles, great video.

White boy abroad

Well, I stayed through this vid, but I can't stand to listen to you say the stupid name of that boat any more times. Adios...

people defending the mechanics saying not their fault parts are unavailable or so expensive etc etc... those mechanics knew exactly what motor he had and knew whether the parts were available or not. They wanted to sell him a new engine when he wisened up and bought the engine from someone else they basically walked away from him and said you are on your own. O yea thats after completely destroying the gear box for his engine. This was clearly a scam and I hope you dont get taken again by these types of people. A good quote for you is Thomas Tusser "A foole and his monie be soone at debate, which after with sorrow repents him too late. " But I believe you are only a fool if you dont learn from your mistakes . We all make em.

sepo cunts

Toby jugs.....

Wow those people definitely take kindness for weakness....i bet if you didn't come from AMERICA they would've been alot nicer to you.....you deal with filthy drain on society parasites. Sorry that they took advantage of you when you were in your most vulnerable state. Those people over there are heartless Demons

You’re a better man than me, I’d have choked that SOB. I hate thieves who take advantage of honest people. Hope everything is going well for you guys, CHANGE ENGINE OIL FREQUENTLY during your first few months of using it. Document all your maintenance. STAY SAFE‼️⛵️

Cost 50k, made 1k. Damn that’s tough

There’s a wood stove in a sail boat lol. Where you getting that wood from

Where the f do you get all this money

Even I have heard of Beta Marine and I've never been on any boat except the usual ferries and stuff... :-D

Just wondering how you make that kinda money. Lolz.

Hmmm, he couldn't sell the engine because he didn't have papers for it, yet he gave it away without giving the new owner any papers.

Horrible

They really ripped you off didn't they. Lambs to the slaughter.

Watching you guys naivety causes me concern for your safety. Good luck.

Since he’s doing everything with donations, what does he care if he gets ripped off?

*Note to self* Never go to Croatia.

S O youtube

He who knows, does not speak. He who speaks, does not know. - Lao Tzu

I wonder why they even put clutches into marine engines? Just another thing to go wrong. On big ships, don't they just direct-couple the engine to the propellor? To go astern, you just stop the engine and then re-start it in the other direction. Simple :-)

Where did all that $$$ come from for the engine and Robert?

Ive sailed for 43yrs,nineteen boats later I have found very few honest boat repairers in Australia...they see us owners as suckers dollar wise!

you got raped, tbh i'd give you a try to looking the way you do, easy cash all day outta this retard.

Totally agree with you on the documentation strangulation hold stifling creativity here in Western Europe. It drives me absolutely nuts. But, unlike you, I can't up and go to live in much less regulated society like you can. Yeah, I know, life sucks,

Such a whineyyyy puss.

Plenty of creativity to be seen here. Especially the bit about needing documentation

About to potentially face very big bill for new engine+gearbox saying its going to be expensive trying to find the cheapest way to solve the issue, Got bored so decided to all go on holiday to morocco.............. Yea, got scammed biiigg time lol, However I'm not shedding too many tears though, Somehow I don't think the bank was broken.

i dont get any of this i put one in myself same size.and you could have milled that shaft with a belt sander or bore the coupling out.this has to be fake.

got ripped off by a slav not a surprise

Forgot to let you know that the biggest “robber” is the Croatian government! The VAT is 25%, the highest in EU!

I feel pity for you (and your wallet). A visit to any engine repair shop in Trieste (Italy) only 50 miles away coud have saved you a LOTS of money and fewer weeks of being “milked” in a nice country but with too many wrong, to say the least, people! Advice to anyone going there for cruising: 1. Get your equipment in top condition 2. Once there, try to meet honest people. They still exists in this country. Have nice and safe sailing

Well... it ain't much if it ain't Dutch... Get some real navel builders instead of the rip offs :/

u couldve just gotten a fresh overhauled second hand engine for about 5-6000.. maybe not over there though.. i wouldnt get a offbrand new engine over a good brand second hand one that is cheaper.. I just swtiched a engine just like this.. new propellor.. got the shafts turned down.. i did it in about 5 days though...

I mean that was a brand enine,.. u can get those clutches fixed back up or get a refurbed one for a couple 100 bucks.. since the engine was fine this guy just got screwed over... now he has a new smaller offbrand engine.. less hp.. wich can be a drag with headwind.. and lots of bucks and time in the hole.. and gl finding parts for a chinese offbrand engine later on..

i could have told you for free never to do work in croatia.. you could buy a new engine and have it installed for 16k

then i watched the rest of the video lol

Another tip. If you have someone at home, ask them to be a point contact for "yacht stuff". You can then email them a list of questions and they can get on the phone to local(ish) people and get more info because they are in the correct timezone and speak live with people. You would just have to wait a day or 3 for a response.

Word to the wise. If you are ever in this situation with a broken engine or some major issue, go to a local yacht club bar, go online in the yacht forums or last resort, call someone in the USA/UK/Germany and fly them in to do the inspection. You will pay for a flight and lodging in the last case but you will find out the real costs without being shafted. Heck if you talk to an overseas mechanic they might be able to diagnose and bring the parts with them! Never accept anyone's word about an issue until you've had it verified by a reputable source Seriously since these guys are videographers/photgraphers, they could have posted some great pics/videos to the yacht forums and would have got some sage advice. I feel sorry for these guys for being so naive and trusting. However it's good that they were honest and open enough to expose these shysters.

O yea Croatia,if the can take a rib out off you they sure wil take 2

I would like to point out that in europe is NOT common to take 2 months of vacation during winter, in Italy (and I guess the situation is almost the same everywhere in western europe) we usually have 1 week during winter, that covers Christmas and new year eve, and 2 weeks in summer, that's it.

Not really. Now they're left second guessing that the work was good knowing they got ripped off.

I just hope that they did indeed get some good work and things are reliable from herein out. The best thing they can do is to keep on top of the maintenance and do the proper periodic stuff. Oil, filters, check deck/hull fittings and check for leaks/rust around the prop shaft. Once they get to a respected port it would be a good idea to have a mechanic/inspector go over it to make sure (this will give peace of mind and confidence). A small investment on top of what they've paid might seem a bit costly but the fact they'll be able to sleep easy is always worth it. If they have a friend who can do this that would also be wonderful and well worth buying the friend a good meal and some beers !!

+Gazza-usa yes I suppose you're right. Peace of mind out in open water is a pretty scarce commodity as it is. Lingering doubts about repair quality don't help at all.

They did they spit on your ass before they corn holed you?

In Denmark we have about 6 weeks

Keep your shitty opinions about Europe and creativity bud. You're just too stupid to realize they fucked you with no lube. Everyone is saying this.

also search j mantzel for all your electricity, solar and fiberglass, the guy makes his own boats in the middle of nowhere

bro how rich are you lol this was handled all wrong, watch sailing into freedom or bums on a boat for practical spending and diy repair. simple understanding of the systems on your boat and the ability to work on it saves you a fortune. but if you got it done thats all that matters.

Kudos on choosing the BETA !

As a Mechanic, you pissed them off with I know it all rich boy talk.Thats what they went on vacation. Lol

Shame the slipping clutch did in the KH18 gearbox. But the old Yanmar is a liability with parts becoming increasingly difficult to source. Whereas the Beta Marine Engine is an asset that you can recover, if you ever sell your vessel. I think its a good investment.

8:45 Wtf ? Yeah suddenly I don't give a fuck that you got scammed lmao.

I second that. I live in the UK but have also lived in Austria, Ireland and France. Nobody could ever afford to take 2 months off. Must be a bullshit Balkan boatyard thing.

Ahhh you need a new clutch plate??? That was the god damn drive dampener they were holding!....SMH They saw you coming a mile away!

I probably would have flown to the U.S. or wherever bought a clutch myself and flown back. 2 weeks at the most.

+Jonathan Fox It's not bullshit but common sense. There is no 2 month vacation anywhere BUT when we talk about tourism and boating there are some exceptions (specially in a small countries where people cannot afford boating during whole year). That means all bussiness connected to boats are in the problems during the winter. Also no one mentioned 2 months vacation. He said that workers where on 2 WEEKS vacation and that is normal in europe to take few months off during winter in boating bussiness.

Man you were ripped off by that guy on your clutch, I am not sure if you are aware that on an out of production clutch you can simply send them off to be remanufactured and restored to near OEM specs for not much money this is common practice in the classic car industry where part availability is a real issue. On a 6 paddle single nonbonded clutch like the one from your old drive train, you are probably looking at around £150 say about $200 plus postage. I would say your transmission looked like it had a few minor issues but nothing terminal until the guy took it apart and didn't return the parts probably $2000 worth of work to rebuild. I think your final mechanic was costly but he was working in the holidays and you were asking for it to be fitted perfectly, which would explain a lot of his approach I suspect that your new engine will run very well as it looks as though he made sure everything in the drivetrain was perfectly set up for the engine rather than the often used approach of striking a cost-effective balance. I am not sure that a new drivetrain was needed but what you have ended up with is a boat with something that looks as though it will be very reliable for years to come.

You fucked up removing a yanmar for a shitty beta

Radical

Im curious. Is this lifestyle sustainable without an income source like youtube or patreon?

This was my favorite video. You showed us a lot more of what is going on.

The EUSSR. Its a mess

wait so... you had some little tiny ass clutch disks wear out (literally 100% normal for all transmissions) and you rebuilt the whole thing and spent $16k?

hahaha ohhlord you got ripped of so hard

First of all, a super well and informative made Video. What happens to them, happens to me all the time! I bought a Fellowship 33 in Empuriabrava, Spain. We want to sail to New Zealand and yes, I am not a Mechanic, an Electrician but only a normal Guy who learned a lot to fix on the boat, but admits, that there are times, when you NEED to go to Professionals. I upgraded all shrouds, all Instruments, put in new pumps, Solar, Windgenerator, an Arch and much more. I went to the 2 Yards Close by. The cheaper Yard, was very dirty, could not get power or water to work on the boat. The Welder (externe one) finished his Job 1 1/2 years after he started it! The second Yard, much cleaner and bigger, they are ok BUT extremely expensive! Each time I have work to do, they Charge me between 8 and 12'000 Euros. They put in 2 or 3 People even if only 1 could do the Job. Then you have to wait in between Jobs, as they have other 'Emergencies'. I have a 40 year old VETUS, Peugeot P4.21 Engine. I wanted to replace all Gaskets, get all new with Rubberhoses, and some other necessary Parts. I have been told, that they can't get anything anymore and that I should by a Volvo Penta 50HP Engine. Driveshaft and new Prop, with the new engine would come to about Euros 20 to 25'000! By this time I would have spendt easily 75'000 Euros for Jobs which the Businesses never where able to give me any Quotes! I live 2000 Kilometers away and can't stay to oversee all the Jobs. You are really screwd and taken over the table time and again. There is NOTHING one can do. First you get very angry about the first bad Outfit and you go and ask around again. Then you go to the second Outfit, explain all really good. What you want and what you don't want! They all nod. But disappointment and overpriced cost happen again and again. No matter what you do and to whom you go. All These Outfitts know, that they have Tons of new and old Clients any Day and they do not Need you. The Catalans promise you everything and Keep nothing. in the meantime they steal the hard earned Money out of your pocket, knowing that you as a Foreigner, have no other choice! We had to go back to work now for the second year. But I still believe, that it is the right decission to fix and upgrade all, before we start. If things later on on the journey brake down or Need Attention, then at least not all will come at once. But Catalanien and probably many other Nations as in your exsample, are the same. They steal it from us.

when say 2 month vacations, they know you not last 2 months in that marina so long, its like polite to say fuck off :D when primary money milk plan fail and croatia not that country what can afford lose client "dont have papers" sale contract on paper print boat name owner engine number date same with new engine, when pass customs they may look papers and you will stuck in some 3th country

I bought and kept a boat in Montenegro for 6 years and finally sold it after getting tired if getting ripped off by unscrupulous yard owners. Bought a smaller one with an outboard engine and saved a lot of money. It used to be cheap to have a boat in the Balkans but the rich Russians, destroyed that for good. It is now probably the worst and most expensive place to haul out.

Hi. I changed the engine in my cav32. Best decision I had made on board. Cost a bit, but boats cost. Plus we love them. I couldn’t trust my old engine and now it’s all so sweet. Cheers

Document over form and function = Waaaahhh they won't let me do what I want, so I'll label me grief with "creativity" for moral high ground. Douche bag sounds like those morons who want safe space in a educational forum. Why can't folks just accept the world for what it is, a collection of groups of people with different idea's on how to fuck things up? Seriously sounds way less whiny than "boohooo nobody like my idea cause I think it's right and they think it's stupid"

It was money well spent

Sail life is the new van life. While the boat wasn't going anywhere, you certainly got taken for a ride.

You got ripped off Bad time. They thought look at that stupid American he believe everything

I am sorry for your costs. Dont trust mechanichs in eastern europe. They are skinning you. But I am glad you are positive after all your inquieries. Glad you got help from Robert though. Wish you good luck!!

Good luck on your crossing

Nice sailboat. I like the shape of the hull - it looks like a classic and sea worthy design.

I am disgusted . You were ripped off . There was no need for a lift out to replace some shims there are parts for those engines available worldwide.btw thats not a clutchplate ! your old engine will be powering another boat now.i am afraid that you were seen coming .

Too bad you didn't get lucky enough to let an experienced machinist evaluate your clutch and gear box for turning new parts. Not a lot of options, and no swearing like a sailor.

I'd woulda got the new engine too, cool beans.

I am amazed how people without any mechanical knowledge dare to sail “ around the world“,insane.Half mile from that marina is shop where that plate is about 200 euros, complete new gearbox is 2500 euros. One month ashore is 800 euros, lifting of a boat is 350, towing is 80 euros, ladder rent daily 10 euros, motor diagnostic 80 euros per hour of qualified mechanic , and so on and on...... they spent much more than 16000 dollars.

. One month ashore is 800 euros, lifting a boat is 350, towing is 100 euros, ladder rent daily 10 euros, motor diagnostic 80 euros per hour of qualified mechanic( one person) , work hour of mechanic 100, and so on and on...... they spent much more than 16000 dollars. I suppose that I am just jealous. Anyway , robbery is serious business.

Later down the road you would have kicked yourself for not opting for the new engine when you had the chance. Never mind the naysayers....none of them even own a fucking boat.

love the intro

2nd opinion?

"never encounters difficulties!".Yea right ,the reason why im watching you from my warm sofa.

+Jonathan Fox they can afford it

Informative and entertaining. Well done!

Sometimes is best to just lick your wounds, forget the past pain & move forward.

Fortunately, your wallet was not empty :)

I will share it with , youtube sailing channels on Facebook

put your outboard on a bracket on transom..gets in and out of harbour perfect,,do engine in morroccooo.or turkey

BOAT = bust out another thousand

I'm from Europe, not too sure about that taking a few months off for winter stuff.

The more I watched the sicker I got. Every time you turned everybody screwed you.

That transmission, engine Addis guy totally screwed you.

And in "europe its common for people to take 2 months off " wtf? Um , no . What kind of ignorant shit is that?

Being a sailor USED to mean fierce independance and stick to it ness. Now it means video editing skills and a patreon account( letting perfect strangers take over where mommy and daddy left off) And THAT is why you got schucked and devoured like oysters.

you got hustled....bad

This is how Croatians treat people from other nations...Good to know...Hopefully one day those crooks will be in the USA and the favor can be repaid to them the same way they screwed you.. Everyone saying what they could have done but you are at their mercy when they have your boat torn apart and in their location...I would have waited to have any big work done in the states where it's more competitive market...Soo sorry you were taken advantage of..it makes me sick..

Just binge watched this entire season. I hate the idea of sailing. I'm a prairie boy who's more than happy with my feet on the ground and canoeing around our many Canadian lakes. But this series was an intoxicating adventure and your stamina for overcoming barriers was an inspiration. Keep it up. Subbed, liked, shared, commented. Love it.

Just get a used sailboat for $4,000 dollars or less.

You are very smart and ambitious. Why did you allow that guy to rip you off? Judging from the video, you knew what was happening. You should have been less nice, more demanding.

When I stop Laughing!!! Two pieces of advice. 1. Less soy more Tim Taylor . 2. More Click bait . More of her behind instead of her behind the camera. Rear views = revenue. You're gonna need it

It seems like everybody is trying to rip you off!

You are a funny man

i would had purchase a new engine too bro, that repair guy was awesome

whats with that annoying background music.

Don't quote Napoleon, speaking of incompetence!

Mate ... you sound like a fool sometimes with your ADHD style of gonzo filming ... bouncing around your cabin with pastiche homilies and august quotes from philosopher warriors et al. which has you veering towards self-help delusionville as you pontificate to camera. There is a touch of arrogant pseudo-intellectualism that taints your efforts at introspection and the spiritual growth you seem to seek as you school us, the vicarious lifeporn 'browsers', who validate your efforts on You Tube. Luckily for you they are those who actually pay you, via Patreon and sponsorship, to indulge in your first world vanity project ... the universal dream to sail the oceans in anarchic, exploratory freedom. Just not me ...

What a pigs breakfast.

lol you get ripped off big but when someone comes and does real work youre getting stingy? and then youre talking about socioeconomic systems? bruh .... oh and my dear americans who love to wear shoes in bed and while having a shower: STOP WEARONG SHOES OR BOOTS ABOARD!

the people of the balkans are masters at ripping off other people, no matter if yankee tourists, fellow europeans or themselves

That is a shame. I did not get how he appeared to be a rich mark, but if it's standard operating procedure, that would explain it. It's a societal thing, hopefully one day they will adjust. That can't be a happy lifestyle.

@Sean Delaney they are happy with it ... let them be ...

I don't understand what is your problem. You were traveling around and left your boat in marina and the costs have accumulated, and in the end you bought the new engine just like they said to you at the beginning. And one more thing you have to be crazy to compare the beta marine with Yanmar.

Thanked robert for his honesty? man...

Now when you sell the boat, you'll get all that money back!

If you're not already, get on https://cruisersforum.com/forums/f103/ or some other place with experienced cruisers and get advice about keeping costs down by doing your own maintenance. Good luck!

What a beautiful boat
