[Music] hi i'm ryan and i'm shane and welcome to top five beat down a show where we compare top fives for topics that seem completely asinine yet somehow garner strong opinions today's topic is olympic events and today's expert is a content creator a fitness extraordinaire and host of challenge accepted on the michelle carey youtube channel please welcome to the beat town michelle carrey what's up [Music] she did she just asked me to specify she's not an olympian but she is clearly more jacked than shane i feel like you choose not to be an olympian well i did train at the olympic training center when i was a professional cyclist but when you go to events they like scout out people they think would be potentials for like the next class of the olympics they do all this testing on you and then at the end they kind of pick their top like two to four people who they'll continue to support on their olympic journey i was like dead last so i was pretty good in my intramural basketball league in college that's still impressive i tried out for golf in high school but i hit a goose you're so bad that you not only didn't hit the fairway but you hit a goose and the goose just shook it up goose lift yeah it did sort of go like so you're a horrible shot and a week a big hollow thud i don't know what's inside those things but it was like you know it's very strange noise you're the most fit person i know and you host a show that is about doing extraordinary feats of fitness so it made sense to me that you would be the natural choice well thank you i appreciate that but yes i host a show called challenge accepted and it's about me sort of committing to different communities lifestyles or professions for an extended period of time and i have trained with a few olympians for some of my videos as well okay well i tell spooky stories and he plays with puppets yeah so when we're talking about olympic events we're talking about olympic events in specificity and i think that's where all the juice is so like we're talking about swimming you're going to want to talk about specifics like the 100 meter breast stroke other than that there's not really any rules here it has to be an olympic event and there's plenty of them there's more than 400 olympic events all right and without further ado let's list let's hit our fives michelle why don't you take it away my number five is pentathlon so i'm sure you're familiar with triathlon for example yes run swim by three this sport is five in one running swimming shooting a laser gun horseback riding and fencing and they do this all in succession so by the time you're fencing you're like oh jesus it would be amazing if the last three were while you were horseback riding like if you had to dance with someone else on a horse like jousting yeah like jousting and then shooting lasers at them and that's crazy it's like the mandalorian yeah i mean there's certainly ways they can improve all of these games i assume this is a summer event this is a summer event and it's on my top five simply because anyone who does all five of these things trains all five disciplines not just one but five yeah i think you're out of your mind but that deserves to be on the board well let's move on to my number five how about that okay all right my number five is speed skating now wow i will say is this the most ex son of a gun yeah that's right can you know how about that that's crazy why did you put it there yeah speed skating guys right here um yeah it's a it's a fun one you know why i put it on here primarily why well actually why don't you go first why don't you go okay i'll go first i like it when they crash i like that was one year one of my favorite olympics it was a dead heat it was a real nail biter one person tripped up everybody collided and then there was an australian guy who was at the very end and he was just like can you believe my look and he he like skated past the finish and there was an interview with his parents and they were like yeah we were watching it on television we looked at each other we were like oh think he's wanted it was really wonderful i love it when they crash why did you pick it uh well i didn't pick it for the crashing per se it's weirdly hypnotic and when i go to an ice skating rink i don't pretend to be a figure skater i pretend to be a speed skater i just love the movement of someone moving so slow but going so fast and then i do like the hands behind the back it's cool because it's kind of like a little swagger yeah it's just like oh i'm just [ __ ] cruising right now it doesn't even matter i'm going a million miles an hour let's go to michelle for a number four we didn't find him right my number four is fencing as someone who doesn't like the summer games fencing is actually probably the coolest one to me i have a personal connection to fencing going to the junior olympics and one of the girls from my like era of the junior olympics actually won gold really lee kiefer did you ever beat her in practice absolutely not she would just like handily destroy everyone every year she has no idea who i am fencing is very interesting because there are actually three different sports within fencing they're all different weapons they all have their own different system of rules so lee kiefer does um foil so foil you can only hit like the torso and groin area because it's you know it's focused on hitting the major organs we should fence i was actually i was watching something the other day that i had fencing in it and i was like i kind of want to try this and half of it was just like i kind of want to wear that outfit i do think you would probably beat me in fencing just because of the it feels like something that could be good it's your arm because a lot of it is like strategy too my arm is so long and then putting on a sword extending that already terrifyingly long and my legs it's fast chest fast chest that's good we're gonna go into my next topic here it's not gonna be nearly as thought out or have any insider knowledge of any sort here comes my number four which is women's women's individual figure skating there are certain olympic sports that really ratchet up the tension and ratchet up the pressure i think this is one of them any little kind of mistake or you don't land quite correctly you get docked little points off of that i always find this one to be the most dramatic also sometimes they dance to bangers there's something to be said for a sport where you get to design your costume that's true i do like the outfits i also like when they spin so fast they become really blurry how do they do that and you're like holy [ __ ] she's totally good from the cartoon yeah it's crazy anyways like i said no insider knowledge one time i tried to do just a 360 almost broke my ass my number four is what is it ski jump oh gosh when they jump in the air and they're like yeah when they jump in the air and they're like they're like holy [ __ ] oh my god exactly right they know what camera angles to use in the winter olympics yeah because whatever they're doing shooting it from a super low angle it looks like every time someone launches off that huge [ __ ] ramp yeah they look like they're just gonna hit the atmosphere and float up to the moon and i love it mary poppins mode just goes straight into the [ __ ] clowns uh i'm always rooting for them to just never land i would say in terms of you know events that give you minimum dilation of the butthole this is probably one of them it's tight that and like the skeleton luge which is when you go head first down doing that head first which by the way was very close to making my list is insanity to voluntarily strap yourself to a sled and go you know what [ __ ] this feet first [ __ ] i'm going kiss your first baby yeah that way my big old apple will explode if i hit a wall okay let's move on to our number threes right we're back now on to our number three michelle my number three is freestyle skiing and snowboarding which one do you prefer though snowboarding is really cool just because like snowboarding is really cool you know snowboarding is pretty hot and it's fairly recent so when it first hit the winter games it felt like yes it's sailing yes yeah it's kind of like ski jump where they go off different jumps and then do like back flips and stuff so it's gymnastics on skis yeah and they can basically choose what happens in the air there's a lot of creativity too yeah there's style yeah there's a lot of styles the culture behind it cracks me i remember i was watching this event and there was this prolific like young kid he was like a teenager yeah they're like yeah we don't know how he does it he says his pregame meal is pizza and red bull anyways let's see how this next event goes and he just goes down and does backflips and [ __ ] and he's just like yeah oh no man i was just out there shredding when you compare it to this when you compare it to figure skating which is so prim and proper it's very like stage mom and pageant moms versus like kids who grew up in like the middle of nowhere colorado basically people who transformed into human versions of white claw let's move on to my number three which is track and field for my 100 relay hey i love it you [ __ ] watch it but i respect your list just don't let your disdain of the summer olympics drip into my list no there will be no drip anyways i like this just because i like the teamwork aspect of it i like that it's just four people just going balls out running as fast as they [ __ ] can holding a rod and being like here take this rod and also that's usually where the mental aspect comes into it when people botch the handoff yeah oh my goodness oh that's great biggest disappointment yeah it's the easiest part of the gig i feel like people watch it almost secretly waiting for that moment that's guaranteed to happen and it's actually not like they're not going to get hurt it's just like ah that's a bummer do you think it harkens back to like back in the day when they had to deliver a message yeah they're training to be messengers yeah well they should pass scrolls we could workshop that after why don't we move to your number three my number three is the gun one i forgot the name of it it's the the cold one you're talking about the biathlon before you get into it yeah disrespect here yeah before we started here shane said i'm listing mine according to how it's written on the official olympics that's the only one i couldn't remember and to be fair yeah i do think the popularity of that event would shoot exponentially up if they titled it with a lower third like a chiron screen that just says the gun it's like a bunch of people trying out to be james bond henchmen yeah if that was the case they would miss they'd be horrible yeah it would be yeah i don't know it's cool it's fun it's cool that they shoot guns on skis that's it also one thing i like about this event that's really funny is sometimes they have mics near the guns because they want to hear the gun go off but oftentimes what they actually pick up is because they're cross-country skiing and i don't know if any of you have actually crossed country skied before but it's exhausting it's one of the most difficult cardiovascular activities all you cross-country skiing is especially funny too because they're working so hard and really not moving very fast and ryan you said this about going to the summer olympics in rio is that when you watch swimming on television it's thrilling yeah but when you were there in person weren't you shocked by how slow oh they're moving slow as hell there was a referee who was upwards of 70 years old he was walking in front of michael phelps but in close-up it's like god damn that's heroic meanwhile this guy's like looking at his watch making sure that no one's going out of bounds all right well let's move on to michelle we're your number two my number two is figure skating pairs absolutely i have a special spot for figure skating because i did a video where i trained like an olympic figure skater with an olympic coach for 60 days obviously you're you have a bit of a leg up because you're an athletic person in general i guess but but i cannot fathom how much people could learn in 60 days it was very intense i was training five days a week ballet strength training cardio and ice work two hours a day you actually practice your routine off skates to like make sure your form is correct and everything because it's a more controlled environment and much respect for figure skating why pairs so i actually competed in individual but my coach was a pair skater in the olympics so just seeing can you imagine doing you know women's individual but then throwing someone in the air oh catching them that's scary people are heavy even light people and especially when those people have knives attached to their feet uh-huh yeah he specialized in a move called the head banker it's a move where he would hold his his partner by her feet i don't even know how they got in this position i'm stealing he's literally swinging her around right now to down and the compelling part of the move is how close she can get to the ice without actually touching the ice this is the thrill of it she's literally you can watch videos she's like inches away he said oh we could try it sometime and i said no pass on that yeah you are literally training in an incredibly cold environment wearing literally nothing sometimes i go into like ralph's and i go into the frozen section looking for ice cream and i like try to like find the ice cream i never find the ice cream because i get too cold you drop all your groceries and you run out of the store no it's cause i get the shivers we're in southern california i'm not gonna wear a [ __ ] you know thermal to to go look for some mint chocolate chip all right moving on to my number two which is it's team all-around gymnastics specifically honestly i only watched the women's version because the the the men are not good oh i agree with ryan yeah i mean men aren't like flexible well they didn't have the magnificent seven what does that mean when we had that like superstar team that was just like unbeatable i think it was the magnificent seven was six anyways we're good that's what i think is so impressive about women's gymnastics and figure skating is you have to smile like you have yeah there's a like a facial presentation too whereas running it doesn't matter what you look like it matters your time it's really funny too because when they're running to get in the place to do their flips they have to smile while they're doing that so when you're watching someone run full speed while smiling it's just horrifying like look at that yeah i don't think they look like you they look different i know that michelle i know that and i guess i didn't get the memo about the cool jackets my number two is snowboarding just in general i think i i think i mean the freestyle snowboarding you think you mean the freestyle yeah that's the one i mean were they they're on the big half pipe so half pipe then yeah half pipe and it's and it's good because they flip around and go so fast i can't even see what they're doing up there you know look at that flip wow yeah i would love to name tricks for snowball yeah like an old old flipper dipper flipper dipper's good what if i did a jingle jammer what if i did two 360s while doing a backflip would you that's a jingle jammer oh [ __ ] the bergara did it he'd done the jingle jammer except they don't sound like that the snowboard announcers are always like and this is the same with i think freestyle skiing they all seem like so friendly to each other obviously it's like competition but i think because it's a newer entry into the olympics they're so excited to be there and they're very excited that the sport is getting like attention and people are taking it seriously because for a long time people are like yeah these [ __ ] kids doing this they're just trying to get back to the lodge to have a cold one because that's really all they're about and i i respect that because that's how we are when we ghost hunts we'll agree to disagree i'm there to find ghosts you son of a [ __ ] i'm just kidding we're getting allowed to throw back some snakes in front of company i'm sorry unbelievable i think i've said all i need to say it's a blast i love it uh one of my faves and now hallowed ground our number ones my number one olympic event is women's artistic gymnastics what is what's special what versus rhythm it's the same as you put are there bars in this one so artistic gymnastics covers well not not for the women women's artistic gymnastics covers floor bars vault do only men get the bomb or ladies out there that's true we really only get the pummel i didn't even know that oh [ __ ] it's really cool what these women can do and i think it's rare that there's a sport where like the women are followed more than the men um and i i just really respect i love simone biles it's amazing i mean you have to have every single muscle in your body completely trained to a t in order to do what they do it's the top it if i even attempted to do anything that they do i would die and i'm not saying this because i would like to see you die but i would pay good money to see you try i know you would with full effort yeah to do any of these events yeah because it would be really funny mm-hmm should we move on to my number one we're ready all right my number one is i think this is a good one [Music] it's a swimming medley relay mixed i don't know what this is but i like it so basically the traditional version of this there's four swimmers and each of them is doing a specific stroke whether that be the butterfly the breaststroke freestyle backstroke etc and they're racing against another country this has always been the most exciting uh sport for me to watch kind of like why the the track and field version is exciting to watch but i don't know all of my memories of watching michael phelps destroy anyways i love this event and i specifically put mixed because that's actually a new event because before it was four men now it's two men and two women per country oh that's neat and that's going to be amazing that's at least what my wikipedia research has told me if i'm wrong well this is a great event it's great swimming is the only sport where air isn't free you have to calculate when you're going to sound like something an athlete would say i could never say that that was pretty cool should we move on to your number one let's do it my number one is pairs figure oh sexy and scary sexy and scary like michelle said you've got these pairs out you didn't even touch on the sort of human drama of it all and i know that's in all of these they've all everybody's got stories but something about the pears the stories are so rich it's very funny to me when maybe one person lets the other person down it happens to me all the time at work what do you mean you know when one person was another person i'm sure knowing me that's the joke you're making you son of a [ __ ] you know what's crazy what is when they're you know perhaps heterosexual identifying yeah but they're not together it's crap yeah and look like we all know they're banging i don't know if people have kissed but that would be equivalent to that photo of the sailor kissing the nurse in times square uh of pairs figure skaters kissing at the olympics has anybody ever proposed that would be incredible oh my god this is a movie this is almost amazing right it's a movie oh my god okay so the movie is yeah they're not together no but they've been training since they were kids yeah but it's like a will there won't they and then they finally get to the olympics and then before they go on the guy says i want you i've always wanted you yeah but i never feel comfortable because you're married to so and so and then they do their routine and they're like kind of fighting when they're doing oh my god i'm getting emotional they're like they're making eye contact and they're like kind of crying but like getting through a thinking to the end tends across the board and then he says i don't care what she says and then he proposes wait can you propose to someone if they're already married though who cares it doesn't matter yes you can let's say you can be called that's mine is made out of her first skate but what if she said no she won't this is a movie that's a fun movie actually that would be if i saw that on television i'd be like whoa imagine how angry the theater would be like what anyway i think we've gotten a little carried away here but my point is it's the relationships it's the storytelling it's the bangers this is the reason i watch the winter olympics i'm glued to the television every year well if there's any olympians out there that are watching this know that if you beef it really hard somewhere on a couch shame a day is laughing his ass off and making noises like this like he's turning into a [ __ ] werewolf well that does it for this episode of top five beat down make sure you guys chime off in
