ended up giving me the car because he wanted to go buy another car he gave me the car search and of course i couldn't drive but um someone asked to buy the car off me of course the car didn't work we pushed it as a stick shift mercury links we pushed it got it to working they gave me a 500 for it and so with that went out and bought another car and before you knew it i was 15 years old we had about eight cars in front of you runs great these might work so all in all the entrepreneurial spirit was always there my brother and i we started uh eminem pool construction after i after i graduated high school he built in-ground pool university he couldn't do it um came back and he didn't think he's making like a thousand dollars a week so i said yeah man let's do this so uh the next year we uh partnered together started eminem pool construction and we are building in-ground pools and one of the one of the best things the most fulfilling thing i can remember is that i mean here are two young black guys from pontiac michigan going out to all these different cities around us and we're building these pools and the fun thing about it is that when we show up there's a just grass when we leave there's a beautiful pool and we knew that we made that change right we knew that we were the ones that did that people are laughing and having a great time but we knew we could do it it was that small bit of confidence that led us into future endeavors that led me to believe that you know honestly we could do anything you know someone come from there to flipping houses to buying apartment complexes or to decide to buy shopping centers or doing whatever it is you know um it was that confidence that we were able to build in that and now those small endeavors that kind of led to where we are now oh wow that's interesting very very interesting eminem pool so what would you like in that too you said the experience of watching looking back and and saying seeing the joy that it brought that family after the pool was placed in the ground and and what they were enjoying is that something that you still enjoy today um i think everybody wants to make a difference everybody wants to be impactful um and the challenge sometimes in business and in life is when you are not you know you don't have that job satisfaction because you're too removed from the end product when you're making which they go inside of a clock they go inside of a bigger thing you don't it's hard to say this you know it's hard to say that you know i i was part of that project you know and so you have to really have that attachment in that team but when you go out there and it's you that throws that touchdown pass yes it's you that has that shovel you remember how you felt yesterday and you remember how you feel today and it's very impactful and the reward is not to remove from the work you know you bring up a very good point because a lot of our entrepreneurs come to the center that is one of the things that they tell us that they want to make a difference and they want to be impactful in the community and we encourage that we encourage that because cnn solutions wants to be impactful we want to make a difference so that that is very distinct word that you're using there uh brewster uh what what have you noticed with some of our entrepreneurs who are coming through and as far as being impactful uh some of the things that i i one of the things even that i try to instill within the within the um the beginnings of starters in their own business right is that uh there's hard work and there's perseverance but it just doesn't stop right there remember the communities that you you live in and that's that's the belief system that i want to give to them and to remind them as they grow and as they move forward it's it's just not your bowl in a sense right so that's what i see a lot of people really want that whether it's the thought of generational changes from the wealth wealth standpoint or just a puny cycle in life itself those are the things that i i see and genuineness to want to make a change we didn't get to where we are overnight and you know and and it takes it takes time and it takes a willingness you know to move forward in that cycle of change uh also as you ventured off into several different businesses uh what which of those did you find most enjoyable i've always i've been in construction okay so i've always been in construction i've always been um when i was in pools i was in construction when i was flipping houses i was in construction i was on a department complex i was in construction um and now my business is a general contractor my goal was very specific when i was young i was building in-ground pools and i wanted to build hotels and resorts it was just it was that simple um and that's one of the things that i encourage people to do in business you know i have this is just saying that there's only two places in this world where you're at and where you want to be and success is when those two places are won um and it's very similar to if you think about gps okay or an address see what i'm going to do after i leave here is i'm going to take this big o earth and i'm going to put where i'm at in one little blinking dot and where i want to be which is home in a more solid that right and i can guarantee you i get there you know right and the thing about your goals and your dreams is that you have to make them as specific as an address that way because there's gonna be so many places i can stop on the way home there's gonna be so many different driveways but as long as i have that very specific address i know i'll get there and even if that road is deterred and even if i have uh um there's an accident in front of me all that does is change the time in which i run right but that location stays the same and guess what happens if i get off track you just re-route yeah they don't get mad at me the gps doesn't come to us you can recalculate you know what as i'm sitting here charles i i tell you i think about how you you put it in such a manner that seems like okay any any everyday person can understand right and i sat here and i thought i said wow business plan you know it's part of the map it's part of that gps that's that says hey this is what i where i want to go yeah if you get off course yes reroute is there changes that need to be made you may need to stop at this supermarket if this goes but you'll get there so for the people out there watching when you think about the principal business as you listen to mr scott get listen intuitively how he's given the examples these are these are nuggets that are worth it very worth it you know the key thing is i want people to remember this the key thing is not the route the key thing is the address the key thing you cannot i cannot begin to tell you how many people want to be successful yes right yeah i just want to be successful and i ask them one simple thing where success saying i want to be successful is like you telling me hey man you can ride home sure i can go ride home where is that just just take me home right i'm sorry where do you live home oh of course you live home but if you don't give me an address right i have no clue where home is if you don't tell me what defines success for you exactly because there's so many houses there's so many places you can make money doing anything anything but the question is what does success mean to you where is it and how can you do it like a math down to the point where you separate this point that you want to be from every other point once you start once you tell the united states once you tell me alabama once you tell me oakwood avenue once you tell me 4206 why don't you tell me sweet 100 right now there's no other place like it right right right right and and that's that's very uh good point there also because success in business is different from you than it is with me than it is with brewster right and and that is one of the things that we talk about uh with the entrepreneurs uh when they come to the course we ask them draw success tell me what success looks like to you and some may say success is being able to lay on the beach for days on end and don't have to worry about nothing some may say success is being able to be right there with my customers and seeing that smiling face you know so everyone's idea of success is different kind of like that address everyone's address is different but you need to give us that address so we know that they gotta get more specific they gotta get i mean okay you laid on the beach they have some people that were born on that beach you know your customers smiling because you just gave them gave it to them for free i mean you got to get you got to get down you've got to press this person and they got to be pressed to say this is exactly what it is and sometimes people can't guess that address and that's fine because everybody thinks they want to be in dubai right you start saying what's important start saying you know i want to be somewhere where it's hot be somewhere where i can see the water i want to see different kind of birds and once you start every with every different level of specificity you start narrowing the places where success is because maybe you want to be a mechanical engineer maybe you want to work at walmart in a logistics part you don't know but once you start ironing out what success is now all of a sudden you start matchmaking that this right here is actually really suited for you that you you you would really love key west you know so charles with that being said scott this is got some you talked about your the address successes and failures were for you when it came to getting to that address or is your address are you still getting to your address um i'm still getting to my address i am i am good friends with failure good friends with failure join the club failure at first you scared me a little bit right and i never wanted to beat him but i finally met him he's a cool guy he's a great teacher you know professor i call him doctor doctor failure um great teacher you love me you know i mean i don't like to hang around a lot but i see him from time to time um as i visit greatness but when it comes down to um just success and my successes and failures i mean it's it's really hard to be the guy who doesn't quit right you know it's hard to lose if you're still in the game you know and so the biggest thing is about the failures is um they're usually not surprising they're usually the good thing about it is if i go to the wrong house i i'm 100 successful at the wrong house i made the exact right wrong decision you know so so so nothing's undefeated you know and and so um i i'm okay with failure i'm not afraid i i learn from failure and i what i'm not gonna assume in life ever is that loss of money is failure right just like i won't confuse success with money either right absolutely you know you you bring a good point we had a a business coach who came down and spoke with the class a few months back and one of the greatest talking moments talking points that he gave uh he explained how he lost 40 000 dollars in his business but he did not let that stop him from starting another business and he became very successful in that second business that he had started so that that there was a true testimony when you meet with as you said professor failure well professor failure taught him something you know i i've had someone tell me you know well mr fry how do you know this i guess well i know this because i tried it several times before and failed now i know how to do it the right way like this and and that is one of the best lessons that we try to explain to everyone you're not going to hit that mark on that first try it doesn't always help in that way you might miss it a little bit but just because you missed doesn't mean you stop trying you do it again and you realize where you went wrong so that you can't hit that mark on that second goal right yes so let me throw one in there with that as as you were reaching as you became somewhat acquainted uh would sell you did you have indicators yes you learned you started learning those indicators these these are um old wives tales or like like a farmer's almanac okay my mom when you get used to rain he raises us on those things before seven will stop before eleven months is gonna rain all day so you start to get these little indicators and this is one of the reasons why i ventured into my cigar lounge one of the reasons why we ventured into different things like the comeback group um and it is because after you you know after you go and you hear it a couple of times and you'll be around a couple times and you miss it a couple of times and you missed that boat a couple of times you start paying attention to this little horn and the boat's coming right you know you start looking at the sky you start seeing all these clouds and so right away i knew i remember 2016 i called up my now sister-in-law and i asked her to give me the mls and look for every house in north huntsville that was under 50 000. she gave me a list back about 50 houses i wonder what that list would look like now today i saw it coming and so now i remember when i was i was working at monaco and um as the then president he came outside and saw my car in the back and uh it was it was a mercedes s550 and i think at the time i was making like 55 grand but i want to buy but anyway it was a hundred thousand dollar car um i own apartment complexes and different things like that and you know they came outside and said well you know who's power sisters it was mine and said you know and to me it's fair if you have an employee that pulls up in a ferrari or something i'm gonna make sure my books are right you know um but then i asked i asked um the vice president i said they'll make good decisions when i'm here i said yeah i said okay i don't leave here and forget how to make good decisions and so once you start seeing that storm brewing right as we're in our entrepreneurial job once you start seeing these different things once you once you're that goose that's working at a golden edited factory and you constantly lay golden eggs and you get your check every two weeks it's okay to remember how to lay those golden eggs for yourself oh yeah it's okay to to go ahead and crack your eggs and see if there's gold inside and see if the things that you're teaching you on your job how to be organized how to even even though you don't like these policies where these policies came from and so eventually when you get into you get your own you can understand that my philosophy when it comes down to entrepreneur i love the nine to five transition to entrepreneurialist i love it you know because it gives you the textbook right literally because principles ain't proprietary if i drop this glass it'll break absolutely yeah you know you don't get to own that principle i'll take that and that's what the one thing i'll tell you this people brought labor over to america and they've worked it a couple hundred years they got a free ride they got a chance to get a starbucks they got a chance to get mcdonald's they got a chance to get these big names right right and so what i'm gonna do is walk into those starbucks and take every single one of those ideas and use it over here and make it cooler yes sir yes sir you you mentioned uh as you as you was grown and you came into your other businesses and you mentioned the black circle lounge during that process of y'all going into the black cigar lounge did you find anything that you had to change you had to pivot on you know you know your mind said i want this i want like this one like this and then you realize we can't do that we're gonna have to make some changes um i would say yes but i knew that going into it i've done this before and i knew that i have this idea i've got this red and i have these these guests and these customers that are blue and i know once they come into this red there's going to be a shade of purple i don't know exactly what that purple looks like and more importantly i want to make sure that if i can then that purple closely resembles the original purple right because that's why i'm going into business this is not for the purpose of making money but this is for the purpose of bringing this product okay um but at the same time i think it's uh very imperative that i'm not going to force what i want and solely on on the community i'm going to make sure i stay relevant now that that that sounds so so familiar doesn't it mr palmy you're listening many times we we speak to our entrepreneurs that entrepreneurs seem to think uh their business is what they want but it's not it's what your customers want and they had to learn that they had to change and pivot from their thoughts of making everything uh a green building and they realized nobody wants to go to a green building right so they say i need to change this i need to make it more acceptable to my customers and then they change it to a blue or red or yellow building you know that's a to me that's a that's a fine line they've been there in leadership in life as as a husband as a parent as a businessman there are times when you put everybody around you and you say okay now you guys i think i want to do it this way everyone tell me and you know open yourself for feedback and sometimes with all the good feedback you gotta ignore it and do exactly what you thought you were gonna do in the beginning when losers draw right you know i think it was uh henry ford if they were to ask them they would ask the people what they wanted they would say faster horses yeah you know sometimes you've got to you but that's what relevant is relevant is the connection you have with your market and it's just like related relations that real it's it's measured by the space between what you're what you're doing and where your market is you know right an example of such would be i mean if you guys mean like you play football if i was a quarterback and i dropped back and i saw a wide receiver at the 10-yard line he's running pretty fast if i throw that ball to where that wide receiver is that's not going to be a completed pass right i literally have to throw the ball to where no one is correct because i see where the world's going you cast your idea out there with the hope with the faith with the intelligence that this is where the world's going guess what happens the world will catch up to your ideas i'll catch you that's right good point there's some moves and some shakers that's seriously important that's something i'm done ensure that we kind of put into our you know our talks yes you know uh so you know we have as we work in the entrepreneurial world and we're working with young minds and aspiring entrepreneurs and there's some out there already excuse me someone's already who may already have that second job or as a lot of people might know they call it the side hustle um from your experience and and and the vast many jobs that you started and you started your own little second job at the car and sold the car and they realized hey i can do this and move on how would you characterize or how would you uh influence those you know to become uh great at what they're doing um well here for me let's define great okay my simple definition for great is doing what you're designed to do and the moment we're designed to do it nothing more nothing less i can't hold water in my hand um because my my hands weren't designed to hold water so um but this cup can all right give you a different example michael jordan six foot six 45 inch vertical been playing basketball for most of his life this paid 33 million dollars for the ball through my minimum my minimum expectation of him is to put a ball through all right okay if i was getting paid 33 million dollars to hold cups water in my head you're been on my expectation for me to do that so to me it's doing what you're designed to do we as humans have the choice of when we do our best so you know that's why you know the cup is always great it'll hold water all day we don't we just do it we show up every now and then all right um but overall um i i think that the pursuit of that is kind of where we're where we're you know i think i guess overall pushing you answering your question yes you're getting there you and i had a conversation uh last week and and we spoke a little bit on uh your particular side house would you call themselves on your uh um and and you made a lot of good sense on that well well i think that the biggest thing is this is that um it's okay to want something greater all right it's okay to say that you know i want to be great i want to i want you to be great i have the capacity to be great that's the faith you should have is that you right but it's it's only fair that you step outside of that and define what is great is this is the way to do it right right we're not born we're not putting position right now most of us are not in a position and and quite frankly no one that's ever been really successful in any endeavor is automatic that they don't you don't start out doing it right okay you don't start out doing it right you don't start out with um the experience that let's say a target has you don't start out with the buying power you don't start off with the logistics you don't sign up with the trucks you don't start out with those things right right so either if you're not gonna do it right don't do it at all that means you're just not gonna do it at all because you don't have the capacity to do it right to me it's like it's like working on a car that you're trying to drive you know right it is literally saying that hey i see that i know this tire needs air now i can sit back and make sure my tire has air or i can drive it while it's a little flat and try to get there if i'm driving down the road and my windshield wiper goes out and it's raining do i park the car and start wiping my window off or do our pivot adjust look over and say i'm going to get that thick soon as i get the means but right now getting to my destination is more important sometimes in your side hustle you've got to make it work you show me somebody don't mix your personal money with your business gotcha word appreciation what anybody gonna do now i'm gonna mix my personal money okay i'm gonna you know i i'd love to have an account i'd love to be working in my nine to five right now and then getting off work and you know and have an account and a bookkeeper that tells me where all my money is going all this stuff right here it's possible but it's highly unlikely you know i'm going to be counting rent how much more than this yes right that that's how that works that's the reality that's the reality of it you know when we can sit back and joking and say that this is what you and now the truth is it's irresponsible of us as as as uh experienced and leaders to say hey you know well just do it like that no we teach our kids to do it the right way we don't want them to make the mistakes we don't want them to do these things right however those people that are doing business that you're hustling that you're bringing it to the end my thing is just know two things just know that there is a right way to do it there and i'm not doing it the right way i hope you all heard that that was a nugget yeah look at walking to that starbucks walk into that that company that's operating when you choose that vehicle if you want to do it be a corporation make sure that you're you know you're studying about it right now we have so many different resources that that are google you can literally go inside and say what should i be doing i should be having corporate meetings i shouldn't be able to do this so and position yourself so that each time each day you're getting better you're getting better and you're transitioning this is the growth process you're transitioning from that nine to five to the side hustle to a business to doing it right into a real old machine that you can leave your you know job in or you can leave this and you can come over here and work for yourself but the idea that i'm going to wait for all the lights to become green before i go it's not that's not that's not that's not in the entrepreneur's mind you know so you're asking them you ask them to fight against the nature of their themselves entrepreneurs say um nobody's doing it i should do it manager's saying why would i do it no one's doing it you know so you got to fight that mentality and fight to be a trailblazer but you got to be a smart trailblazer you know how to blaze trails just cause it's a new path a new path don't be a new principal yeah everybody you know you know so folks so for all you out there who are looking to become that entrepreneur and and trying to uh make a difference and be great in this world you know i i do know for those who are in the huntsville area there's a there's a lot of different avenues that you can go with and trying to get you started especially on the financial side you know there's neighborhood concepts that will help you uh get started uh there's also the kiva loan program that's out there to help you get started you know and sometimes you might be able to just go to your your uh personal banking institution as well uh and start that business loan now just but the key thing is is kind of going along with mr scott said is understanding there's a right way and there's a wrong way you know and for you to know the difference between right and wrong you know uh brewster um what do you think on that wow yeah you got me right well you know absolutely there's always a right in the wrong way jungles but like mr scott said right ideally you would love to be able to get on that path and stay on that straight and narrow and everything to work out and flow fluidly uh with with no exceptions but that's not reality i've written that word down more than once that's just not the reality of how things work and we understand that even here at cni solutions but we we're here to try to teach you that rightly to show you that right way with an understanding that your gps might take you some stops right right i'll use that analogy as well so that that's how i do it you know you know put that address in know the address right but if you get off that that gps will get you back on yes yes that will get you back on to get to that address that is correct all right good deal good deal uh viewers just an admin reminder please remember that uh we are still raffling off the 50 inch tv for five dollar tickets uh those who want to purchase a ticket you can either come by c9 remarks sir um no thank you guys i really appreciate you guys having me i think these kind of uh conversations are important um for people to see we see natural people that are that have been there that are still trying to do it yes and to understand that they're not much different on you know from the people that are that are that will be formed you know right so just continue to leave yourself continue to have that confidence um i love what you do and uh good luck in all your endeavors thank you thank you likewise yes and if y'all do not know uh the black silver lounge has been nominated or thing that i'll always say mr scott is this i i am you and you're me sometimes i think communities get lost in the fact that hey people get lost in the fact that we're they think we're different right in that sense but we are we all have a journey we're trying to get to that that that address you know and just also remember your yesterday is not your today and your day is your today is not your
