circumstances and in the moments that matter the most they moved forward they are resilient beating all odds what's their secret they're not just students they're front runners and researchers mentors and innovators healers and educators they're champions each facing and overcoming their own obstacles it's those same obstacles that motivate us to build a better tomorrow from frustration we become welcome to our graduates and guests i'm dr carl kemnitz provost and vice president for academic affairs the academic symbols and traditions we observe in today's ceremony are intended to honor and affirm our graduates dedication and outstanding achievements to protect the dignity of this ceremony we ask that all cell phones be set to silent mode we are here today on the traditional territory territory and homelands of the lusenyo payamkawishum people to celebrate the accomplishments of our graduates and to extend our best wishes for their continued success this is a commencement ceremony unlike any other in our university's history and we're grateful to be able to celebrate your achievements in person both for our class of 2021 and our class of 2020 which didn't have this important opportunity last year while this is such a special day i would be remiss if we didn't take a moment to acknowledge that these last 15 months have been profoundly difficult for so many reasons many of us have lost friends family members and loved ones i would like to invite all of us to pause for a moment of silence as we honor those lost to covet 19. thank you now it is my privilege to introduce someone whose career has centered on student success and student social mobility someone who is firmly committed to ensuring that anyone who dreams of earning a college degree has that opportunity in her role as president dr ellen neufeld is focused on community engaged learning continuing to develop strong innovative academic programs an innovation that not only supports student ideas but also serves the community it is my pleasure to welcome to the podium cal state san marcos president ellen neufeld [Music] class of 20 and class of 2021 this is your day that's right [Applause] as i was thinking of you and i was thinking to coming to my first commencement really so much overcame me and really it was about thinking about you graduates you know this is a moment where you have shown so much triumph over adversity every step of the journey and we think about the moment of silence we just took and the individual and collective journeys that we've all been on what i had to think about was you and how resilient you are and determined and resourceful your leaders this is what really gives me hope is when i think about what you persevered and overcome and you represent what tomorrow will bring class of 20 and 2021 you stand out and show us how it's done you stand out like really no graduates ever before you you have shown in this unique moment in history that you are ready to take on the world transform it and make it a better place you know when i think of you and i think of the hope that you bring i think about how the class of 20 and 2021 when i think of you i know that you were born to fly so when you think about this special moment i do hope that you'll always think about csusm and sometimes when life gets hard again you know already the mountains you have climbed that no one could ever predict it i can't even imagine what it was like to have all the changes that you have had when i was in college you know when i think about you and your achievements and what you've modeled for all of us i just want to give you one of the biggest congratulations invite everyone to join me in a round of applause saluting you [Applause] also when i think about your success i think about how many of you are first in your families to graduate and what that means not only for the transformation of your family's lives your future families lives and your communities i think about graduate on parade on friday where if you were through it i had the honor of greeting you in your cars i broke a few rules gotten a little bit of trouble with risk management but i'm still here today because i got to see your yes i got to see your moms dads grandma's grandpas friends children's partners spouses babies and my favorite was all of you that brought your dogs i thought about this special group of graduates but also that special community that's surrounding you i think about all of those families that are so kindly seated back there because of the covet 19 protocols that came out here to support you today and all of those that are watching streaming it took a lot for all of us to get through this and the support of our communities our friends and our parents our partners spouses children are here supporting you today or supporting you in spirit and there's such a group i give heart to so i would like to give all of the families and communities that have supported you and are here with us today are here with us virtually graduates will you join me in thanking them for all they've done i also thought on this special day about all the people working behind the scenes you see we didn't know when we started this year we'd be able to have this ceremony today and when we got to december uh we were on stay-at-home orders and it looked like we might not even be able to have a parade of cars and so we had to change minute by minute and many universities said it's just too late we can't do this now but here there are so many unsung heroes that have literally through this week been working 24 hours a day to make sure that we were here those are the staff and faculty that are so dedicated to making sure you had this moment and then when i think about the whole year and how our faculty sitting in these rows right here transform the educational journey you had to on to virtual learning or if you were still teaching on campus so what that experience would be like with all the protocols ever all of our faculty and staff just like you have experienced that change upon change where who knew what we were planning next and they did it as a dedication of love to all of you graduates so will you also help me in thanking all the faculty dedicated faculty and staff that have helped us to this moment i feel so fortunate to be in this community and be part of csusm because of you your families our faculty and staff but i need to take a moment at this very special graduation to acknowledge someone that stood out to me from the moment i met him i'd like to acknowledge dena hammerly and really thank him for his tremendous contributions to this university because he is preparing to retire and you know some people talk about leaving on a high and this individual is leaving on some of the highest notes uh that i can think of just a few weeks ago your college and your degrees became it really helped your degrees in so many ways because your college became accredited by the association to advance collegiate schools of business placing the college in the top five percent of business schools worldwide and increasing the value of that csusm [Applause] degree when i think personally about dean hammerly i think of the first moment i really got to have a conversation with him we were in a group in the academic affairs retreat and i had just been here a few weeks and we were having a discussion really centered around the mission of our university that mission that the faculty believe in so much about your experiential learning that culminates in that senior experience uh trade show that i got to be a part of just this week i think about the highlights of all the things that happen in that in the way we learn and hear and the aacsb accreditors commented that they were going to take home some of the ideas that they learned right here from koba and dean hammerly i remember dean hammerly saying and stood out to me how important it was to hire and make sure we were all dedicated to the mission because it was about our students and their success i will never forget that comment from dean hammerly and he has shown that in the way he has lived and embodied csusm every step of the journey so i know we just applauded him but if you join me in one more round of applause for dean hammerly and with all that you've been equipped here not only from dean hammerly but with the faculty and students and the communities that surrounded you and your perseverance and resilience graduates you have shown that you are the leaders of tomorrow leaders who will bring to our communities in our world the ability to listen and understand multiple perspectives to find those creative solutions to the most pressing problems and to help make our society a more just and equitable place for all something i say often is our students are the change we so desperately need to see in the world i have no doubt you are the change of our world tomorrow as graduates of the college of business administration you will forevermore be part of this community of learners problem solvers and leaders i really can't thank you enough for how you've shown and led through all that we've been through commencement is really a word that represents new beginnings and new journeys new adventures for you now and as you move forward you know that after all of this you are equipped and destined for greatness so when life gets a little bit difficult hold on to this feeling in this moment know what you've accomplished here what you've overcome and take it with you wherever you go it's my sincere hope that you always remember what a special community you're a part of what you've contributed to you what you've helped us become and that you sincere congratulations on your graduation now in a typical year i'd be talking about your success in your coursework the countless papers and reports you've written senior experience friendships made and all those late night study sessions but we all know that these past 15 months have been anything but typical we need to acknowledge that perhaps the greatest lesson that all of us have learned is that we have faced adversity and responded with resiliency you have found a way to keep studying to keep striving to keep going even though it may have been the last thing that you wanted to do more than anything we could have taught you you have shown us all that you are capable of taking an impossibly challenging situation adapt grow and ultimately walk across this stage to celebrate your achievements today we've all lost so much we know that and for some of this some of us this includes losing loved ones who should be with us today we miss them we honor them and we keep them in our hearts on this important day if you haven't had a chance please drive by craven circle as you leave today to see the pinwheels that have been planted to represent those that we miss and when the wind blows you can see that their spirits are with us and as you begin your post-graduation lives remember that you truly have the resiliency to meet whatever challenges come ahead we ask that you pay it within csusm annually selects an outstanding graduate to reach receive the dean's award i'm pleased to announce that this year's recipient of the dean's award for the college of business administration is christian galves christian also received the jeribus family deans award which is generously sponsored by university partners ron and rosalie jervis christian was honored in an earlier ceremony but please join me in congratulating him again it is now my pleasure to welcome kevin bennett a graduate from the class of 2020 to offer a few words our beautiful campus lies hidden in the hills of san marcos it's hard to believe such a seemingly peaceful place would be the site of stressful exams workloads that made us anxious and procrastination by our own doing that inspired our tears nevertheless we had so much fun from the basketball games to you hour the free food not to mention the late night study sessions with our friends we loved it all something magical happens during this adventure each cougar experiences a new gain in direction and pivot in their lives where we learn to find success within ourselves and happiness in our souls that's exactly what koba does so well that business education reminds us that life is never linear as much as business professionals would really like it to be so we're trained we're trained so well to learn how to find success in ourselves solely while existing in a world that refuses for us to be ready and as we've all experienced over these last 15 months covet 19 definitely didn't wait for us to be ready exactly one year ago right here all that could be heard through san marcos were the whispers of its leaves campus lay barren in what was meant to be the most joyous moment of the year that ritualistic moment where each cougar graced the eyes of their pride one last time before officially venturing off into that unknown wild but before anyone could celebrate that milestone a storm hit oh and i mean a big one so big not even the stress of pre-business accounting you know what i mean could have prepared us for it oh you know exactly what i mean but i am so grateful that we've all returned to our stomping grounds here in san marcos today you all here are the heartbeat of csusm it's a heartbeat that's young vibrant and powerful a heartbeat that is linked back to that warm home that welcomed us in those years ago an internal rhythm so strong that when you feel lost and uneasy all you need to do is close your eyes ground your feet and listen to that blue and black beat that brings you back to where your education rooted you be courageous as you continue to venture into that big world and for that adventure i'd like to gift you all my agape my unconditional love and i wish each and every one of you the absolute best in the remainder of your lives and those futures you will live and always remember you'll have a home here hidden in the hills of san marcos congratulations cougars please welcome faculty families friends and most importantly graduates okay when we became students at csusm no one would have guessed the unique times we would face to say the least but i'm glad we are here today even though it's six feet apart and with our beautiful faces being covered in the last year i made a friend who made a huge impact in my life my friend's name is corona yes just like the beer first name corona last name virus coronavirus like seeing chaos and testing everyone kind of reminds me of our professors sometimes you know what i mean anyways coronavirus thought it would be fun to create a global pandemic and on march 11th of last year we received an email stating that we would no longer have in-person classes and we said hello to zoom university now it's been more than a year a year of missing the stairs on campus missing our search for a parking spot and missing our time at players our class even faced some unique challenges like being quarantined running out of toilet paper and trying to find a new show to watch that wasn't tiger king everyone was obsessed with it but throughout all our challenges big and small we did not give up and now it's time to celebrate what we have accomplished my parents came from mexico in search of the american dream i grew up speaking spanish and i am a first generation college student whether you are a first generation college student a veteran a parent or a working student we all had our own challenges and we all have our own stories and we all deserve to be here as the class of 2020 and 2021.
and just like the campus statue of cesar chavez reminds us if we can graduate during a global pandemic then we can do anything congratulations everyone it is now my privilege to recognize the bachelor
