you to all of you for attending this ceremony without your never-ending love and support this class of 2022 would not be graduating from coastal carolina university the past four years have certainly been some of the most fulfilling yet challenging throughout our time here we've made and outgrown friends failed exams dropped classes changed our majors and if you're like me you cried in the shower a few times from the stress of being a college student we thought we would not make it to the end and there were times that we wanted to give up and we did not despite our college experience being sometimes overwhelming we are leaving coastal educated wiser and looking forward to our futures in my case i'm leaving coastal dreaming bigger with a better understanding of my own why and ready to conquer the world i grew up in a small town in upstate south carolina during my life up until i graduated from high school my family experienced continuous poverty with poverty comes fear frustration and loss i was one of the few students for my graduating high school class who attended college and graduated being admitted to coastal carolina university was the happiest day of my entire life i was excited and i was optimistic about venturing out into the world yet i was also afraid of it as most of us probably were however i considered coming to this remarkable institution a privilege and an opportunity to start a new chapter in my life my mother always told me that it takes a village to raise a child and i have personally found this to be true during my time at coastal i made new friends got to know professors and advisors who eventually became mentors and i surrounded myself with the with people who were going to help me have the best college experience specifically one of the most important reasons i fell in love with this university is because i had i was fortunate enough to meet and work with the dedicated faculty and staff our village of support for the last four years has included everyone from classroom professors to the servers at hicks dining hall and they have all displayed nothing less than passion genuineness and deep care for the well-being of the students the wall college of business faculty has gone above and beyond to transition this class of 2022 from inexperienced young adults to confident individuals ready to enter the workforce they have used their resources to help us acquire internships introduce us to experiential learning opportunities develop our professionalism grow our networks and most importantly provide us with the knowledge needed to be competitive job-seeking professionals they have gone out of their way to include adulting concepts into their curriculums such as growing wealth the work-life balance marketing ourselves and helping us discover our true career aspirations to the wall college of business community thank you for preparing us to be the next generation of business leaders by educating us leading by example and inspiring us outside of the classroom although today we are celebrating what will be one of the biggest milestones of our entire lives we still do not have life completely figured out and that's okay if i were asked at this very moment what my dream job would be my answer would be i don't know however what i do know is that myself and my fellow graduates will take the lessons that we learned at chanticleers to the next chapter in our lives and for years to come class of 2022 we made it this far and we have a lot farther to go as you journey out into this world remember a college education is something no one can ever take away from you and most importantly remember where it all began from one proud and relieved chanticleer to another we did it congratulations thank you tamara and you should be very proud that was amazing please join me in welcoming dennis edwards professor and chair of the department of finance and economics to the podium to introduce our keynote commencement speaker [Applause] thank you dean small jared dillion is the editor of the daily dirt nap a daily market newsletter for investment professionals can uh continuously publish since 2008. he

syndicated radio show on personal finance and is now the host of the be smart podcast in his spare time jared is progressive house dj and speaks frequently on mental health issues at financial institutions please welcome my friend jared dillion awesome thank you oh yeah it's great to be here uh when professor edwards asked me to give the commencement speech at coastal i said i would do so under two conditions number one when i die i want my remains scattered across ccu's campus number two i do not want to be cremated anyway uh this is an exciting day i remember when i graduated from the coast guard academy back in 1996 and it felt like i was getting out of jail i was glad to get out of that place i hope your experience here was a little more pleasant i think you did a lot less push-ups but you did it i taught here coastal from 2013 to 2018 and i hope to do it again pretty pretty soon my students have gone on to have all different kinds of careers they've been accountants traders bankers investment advisors pharmaceutical sales reps and even pilots they've gone on to do all kinds of incredible things and so can you there is literally nothing stopping you but even though this is an exciting day for you i hope that it is the least exciting day of your life what i mean by that what i mean by that is i hope you go on to even bigger accomplishments which will make graduating from college look small in comparison if graduating from ccu ends up being your highest achievement i would actually be pretty sad i hope you go on to start businesses write books become millionaires go to grad school and maybe give a commencement speech of your own someday i hope you live a full and happy life with lots of professional achievements if you ask me in 1996 what i thought i would be doing in 25 years i'd probably say that i just have a nice coast guard career and retire if you told me that i'd have two award-winning books a nationally syndicated radio show numerous tv exp appearances a huge financial publishing business and that i'd be a famous dj i would have punched you in the neck god had a bigger imagination than i did and god has a big imagination for you too now as much as this is a commencement speech it's also an anti-commencement speech because all commencement speeches are generally the same what do commencement speakers tell you to do go out and change the world change the world that is garbage advice and the reason it is garbage advice is because if you spend your time trying to change the world you will be a very unhappy person because the world doesn't change and people don't do what you want them to do and you will be frustrated look at the people who get into politics they don't look like happy people to me the goal is not to sacrifice your happiness for a cause greater than yourself the goal is to be happy so i would say instead of focusing on changing the world you should instead focus on changing yourself if there is a person place or thing that you find unacceptable you should accept that person place or thing as exactly as it is supposed to be at that moment in time trying to change the world is a pit of despair and if you do end up changing the world it should be incidental to gratifying yourself get a job make some money buy a house get promoted make some more money start a business have a family in other words mind your own business the world becomes a better place through each of our collective efforts while working for individual benefit when you start a business you are paying employees paying taxes and you're satisfying customers by doing these things getting a job and making money you are actually making the world a better place it is when we intervene in situations that we don't fully understand that we make the world the worst place the other thing that commencement speakers will usually tell you is that money does not matter and you should pursue your dreams instead pursue your dreams i'm here to tell you that money actually does matter that material things bring us happiness and that it is very important to have creature comforts and for our material needs to be met it is nice to have a big house it's nice to have a car it's nice to have a big pile of cash in the bank for your retirement yes you should pursue your dreams but i hope that by pursuing your dreams you will also be meeting your material needs in my case my dream is to be the best financial writer in the world i also make money being a financial writer my avocation is my vocation which is another way of saying that what i do is really fun and i make money in the process which is all you can hope for out of life money is important and the amazing thing about money is that we get to choose how much money we have i'm being serious if you want to make a little money you will make a little money if you want to make a lot of money you will make a lot of money jeff bezos chose how much money he has mother teresa chose how much money she had and everyone in between i chose how much money i have i did not grow up with a lot of money i grew up in a 1200 square foot house in a depressed town in eastern connecticut and sometime around age 24 i decided that i wanted to make money now the path to making money at the time was to work in an investment bank so i spent two years of my life working twenty hour days sleeping two to three hours a night this is a true story in order to get hired on wall street even now there are things that i could be doing to make more money but i choose not to do them because maybe they're too hard or i would compromise my ethics once you come to this realization then you have to ask yourself do i want money now this is the business school commencement so presumably you are here because you want money and the question is how much because the possibilities are limitless the united states of america is flawed in many ways but the one reason we continue to attract the best most talented people from around the world is because there is no limit to how successful you can be america is one of the few places in the world where you can drive a ferrari down the street and someone won't throw a rock at it so if you want to succeed there is no limit to your success and hopefully you learned something here at coastal that gives you the theoretical basis to be successful in the future but part of being successful is taking risks when i was 34 years old i walked away from that job on wall street that would pay me seven figures in order to start my own business and i did that in the middle of the financial crisis i started a financial business in the middle of the financial crisis that does not seem too smart and it was not going well i would come in the office every morning and the first thing i would do every morning when i walked into the office is i would puke in the trash can every single morning i would puke in the trash can because i felt so sick that i walked away from all that money to start this stupid business but i kept at it and guess what over the course of fourteen years it has grown to be one of the biggest most well-known financial publications in the world i bet everything on myself everything i had in the middle of the worst economy in the last 80 years and it paid off huge and if you start a business you will have those days where you ask yourself why the hell did i do this then you solve one problem and another problem in another problem and at the end you get to have some money because that's all business is is solving problems i've worked for the government i've worked in big business and i've worked in small business and i can tell you that being an entrepreneur has been the most fun by far there's nothing like building something creating something and being your own boss you take credit for all the successes and you take blame for all the failures most of you are probably going to work for organizations of various shapes and sizes but i hope at some point in the future you will get an idea and that idea will grow into an obsession and you will take the risk and you will bet it all on yourself and even if it is a failure you will have so much fun and you will learn lessons for the next time you want to take a risk i'm also here to tell you that things won't always be wonderful life throws some curveballs at you sometime divorces addiction mental illness sick children losing your job i've been through it all i'm a 9 11 survivor i've been through so much trauma and come out the other side that everything that has happened to me has only made me stronger the one gift we have is that we can choose our response to any situation you will fail and how you handle failure is important but you also succeed in how you handle success is just as important now back to the regularly scheduled commencement speech the work you've done over the last four years is very important graduating from ccu is a big accomplishment you've jumped through a lot of hoops but this was the easy part now comes the hard part but for today let's celebrate the first of many wonderful accomplishments you will have in your life today you graduate we are all very proud of you congratulations now go out there and be an explosive success [Applause] thank you mr dillion and yes indeed let's celebrate these graduates this is the part you've been waiting for we would like to personally congratulate each of you by inviting you to the stage to be individually recognized for your accomplishments parents get out your cameras i will ask monica fine associate dean of the wall college to join me to present the candidates for degrees while dennis edwards department chair for
