YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT YOU'RE GONNA FIND! Come Thrift & Vintage Shop With Me! Exploring Eugene, Oregon

I see some good mid-century right through the windows we are here in Eugene Oregon and we're going to visit a few stores that we've been hearing about for a long time but we've never been to if I had my own physical vintage store Oak Street vintage is exactly what I would want mine to look like thank you this store is packed wall to wall with designer mid-century mixed with very cool unique one-of-a-kind folk art pieces everything in the store is hand selected and very well curated and it is the perfect balance of Scandinavian mid-century meets industrial meets rustic that is amazing do you think it's comfortable you think it's not comfortable what if it like these sit in here um no idea but I wonder if it's like perfectly sculpted to just like suck your body in and feel so cozy I don't know it's wild let's see if I can get out of it you need assistance what about this one okay dude this one looks like a throne you do yeah except if you like Miss the round spot you might get poked this is incredible sculpture it says Us by Katie McFadden clay Garden sculpture for 6.50 I'm gonna have to research this artist I've never heard of her I like it I really really like this lamp too wouldn't that look amazing with our black and white vitosi although we don't need a lamp in the kitchen pretty fantastic 1960s Italian ceramic lamp 295 that's a gainy heaven over there every color wow this is impressive this place is impressive never seen this many games how big this one in it I like the blue color no I actually want all Italian leather so no wood yeah it's Gotta Be Italian leather I'll wait five years if I have to I'll find them have faith in me oh man we get a matching Thrones this one definitely has a drink holder yeah I did say that I wanted more natural organic elements in our house no thanks they're cool but not for us hey no kidding this is just like the piece that I got in California we're gonna have to look this up and see if it's the same artist what does it say Wendell H black 58 by Elaine I don't know okay we're gonna have to do some research I'm gonna take a picture of this because I think that's by the same Artist as my piece I love this tripod lamp it's the perfect balance of having the wood with also the Wicker gorgeous you know what CJ that is one of my bucket list items right there I know it's not coming home with us today but someday 2 800 someday I will find you in the wild it's gonna be a fun episode foreign so this is what I've been told to look for for the authentic Italia festivo little points the same well Oak Street vintage was fantastic that was probably one of the best mid-century modern stores we've ever been in I would say that there's not even a store like that in Portland that has that much designer high-end mid-century modern all-in-one store so I kind of felt like we were in an awesome La shop and we unfortunately didn't buy anything just because of the price point but those items are worth it they are designer high-end and you just don't find them every day and the majority of those items were in mint condition which is just amazing now we are headed to Goodwill we're gonna check out a couple Goodwills here in Eugene and we haven't been to this area and to the Goodwills in Eugene since our very early days of picking so we are talking almost a decade ago so who knows we haven't been here in a long time I'm not quite sure what these Goodwills are like these days but we're gonna go check it out and see what we can find foreign I used to think that these were hand painted in Mexico but this is actually a pot from Bulgaria these don't sell for a lot of money online I think that a pot this size could probably get around twenty dollars and it's 4.99 here at Goodwill I'm not going to grab it but I just wanted to tell you because for the longest time I thought that this was Mexican pottery and it is not it is from Bulgaria this isn't vintage but it could look really pretty with a candle glowing in it with all of my Moroccan lamps in the office it is 4.99 I'm gonna pass on it because I think this is something
that I could find again for about a buck this is funny these are the same plates that I had at our Tiki party they're made out of little renewable leaves and they weren't the cheapest things in the world so I'm almost tempted to buy them here for next year's party then I also feel like I might have to clean them because they were at Goodwill and see the packaging it's a little bit opened this is a modern made vase in the style of the Italian betosi pottery that I love and collect for my home one of the coolest Parts about touring the betosi factory in montelupo Italy last year was that our guide showed us how they hand stamped each of these little symbols into a repetitive pattern that is why I don't like to pick up these factory made vases and I hold out until I find the real deal if you are a patient you can find an authentic 1960s Italian vase in a thrift store it just takes a lot of patience and persistence I didn't find much in Goodwill but we did get to run into a subscriber and that was really fun she got to show me some of her amazing finds that she just found inside the Goodwill including a piece that I would have picked up had it been there 10 minutes later but it was really cool she collects Fiestaware so she got to show us what she found and she was very excited and that always makes it fun when we get to see other people's finds sometimes in Goodwill everybody's so serious you know everyone's focused on what they're doing and it's fun to see people celebrate what they're finding in there I did get this set of four crystal glasses and these are going to be perfect for the studio because I want things that have a really vibrant color and and I'm trying not to do too many neutral items in that space so I think that this is going to go well with the dark blue walls and just look very rich and crystal glasses are kind of hard to find at Goodwill in a full set and I got four of them and yes I need wine glasses at the studio because we might have some jewelry repurposing nights where we want a glass of wine so I thought it'd be fun to have a set there they were 2.99 each that looks like this brand retails online for around 10 to 12 dollars per glass so a pretty good deal now we are headed to it in the next Goodwill and this is where I found my original Don Friedman so the very first time I ever heard about Don Friedman was when we found a tapestry here at this Goodwill about 10 years ago Jesse that guy thought it was really ugly kind of like that face no but we uh he thought it was really ugly and he could not believe that I was getting it I think I paid 4.99 for it and I got home and did research and that is how I learned about Dawn Friedman it had a bunch of geese on it and it's actually one of the pieces that I featured back when I started my blog that I haven't kept up with and I did a whole blog post about Don Friedman wall hangings so I'm not saying we're going to find a dawn Friedman here but you never know what you're gonna find and it's been a long time so it's good to be back in this town what a beautiful day the sun came out for us it was hailing this morning now it's sunny and blue skies foreign thank you well I was getting excited about this pair of candle holders even though they are 9.99 each but sadly this second one here has a very large chip in it I would buy just the one by itself but I feel like I shouldn't separate this pair maybe somebody else can repair it or they don't mind if they have it in their own home and they can just turn it around I do that all the time with pottery that has a small chip in it oh look at this giant Italian Florentine pepper grinder they've got 39.99 on it that is a little bit surprising I have not seen a pepper grinder for 39.99 before at Goodwill however we are going to put this in our cart because I have not looked yet to see what color is half off this week these giant ones do retail online for probably around 75 dollars to a hundred dollars but unless it is half off I don't think I'm gonna make the investment today foreign this looks like it could be a neat wooden basket the shape on it is fantastic and they've got 9.99 on it
thank you and look at that it is green tag 50 off this week which means we are getting the pepper grinder and I'm super jealous because we do not have 75 off anything back in the Portland area I didn't even know they had a second color of the week lucky ducks this beautiful umbrella lampshade is only 6.99 I have a couple different lamps in my stash that I think this could look really good on and I am also going to grab these two small wooden lamps for my sister's bedroom makeover and I'll tell you a little bit later in the episode what I'm thinking of doing with these another thing I need for my sister's bedroom is a good matte black curtain rod I've already got the curtains in fact I have two different options but I've been looking for weeks for a matte black curtain rod so this one is only 12.99 and it even comes with the hanging hardware I am not taking on any furniture project pieces right now because I've got so much going on but man every time I see something that I wish I could transform it just guts me inside I know exactly what I would do with this one I would remove both of the end magazine holders I would paint it a beautiful color and then I would switch out the hardware for a whole bunch of little lion head door knockers if only I needed a giant coffee table in my office area this would be perfect our next stop is the time travelers Antique Mall this is in Springfield Oregon which is just about a 10 minute drive from Eugene the seahorse cane rising from the phone oh man that sounds cool it's got a whole history thank you foreign my heart just skipped a beat because this looks like a Ted degrazia painting but now that I'm looking at it up close it is painted on a board not on a canvas although I do know that this artist was known to actually take down wooden ceiling boards and do some of his paintings on those but I don't think that he used this type of board to paint on I am going to do some more research when we get back to the studio because if it is an authentic original it could be worth quite a lot of money although it does have a pencil signature here on the back that looks really similar to his signature for under fifty dollars it's going to be worth the risk because either way it's a beautiful painting this is a fun piece of pottery it is only ten dollars but that is because it has a very large chip on the bottom but I've got a thing for pottery with faces on it and it's got a really cool shape so we're gonna get it and see if we can repair that you will be constantly movies yeah perfect thank you look at what kind of magic is hiding right here that is 1970s perfection okay we need to try that on what do we think should I get it foreign this vintage mall is massive it looks like they probably have over a hundred different vintage dealers they've got everything from real antiques primitive mid-century 70s boho Perfection and then here in the back they've got more playful things they've got comics they've got games they've got vintage little figurines and they even have an entire side of the store that has a lot of vintage clothing thank you for pet portrait lovers look at this one that's pretty cute oh it's like the Lady and the [ __ ] dog I want to thank hungry root for sponsoring today's video in these upcoming months life is gonna get really busy for Jesse and I but even with being to Hungry root for sponsoring today's video Jesse and I obviously had quite a day out thrifting if you haven't seen episode one of this day you've got to go back and watch it because we found some really incredible things in Coburg Oregon on our way to Eugene we hit Coburg in Eugene all in one day so when you combine both of the finds from these episodes it was a very successful day trip and we had a really good time getting out and going thrifting and antique shopping together once we got into Eugene we decided let's go ahead and hit a couple Goodwills but first we had to stop at Oak Street vintage which we have heard about for years this was the very first time we had ever been there and it's just one of those places that everybody comes home and talks about whenever they do a day trip or a weekend down in Eugene Oregon and it's pretty obvious why people speak so highly about that store they have such a high-end designer curated selection and it was just so much fun to walk through that store with Jesse and dream about all the pieces we hope to find so I I always recommend to anybody who is starting out as a vintage reseller to go to antique stores of all levels so go to an antique store that's going to have bargain prices but also go to high-end shops because that is where you're going to actually see and touch and look at the designer high-end pieces you're going to be able to see them up close so you're going to know if you come across a knockoff out in the wild my favorite thing from today's episode has to be what I'm wearing this amazing 1970s suede Poncho was made in Mexico and I just love it so much I feel like it really fits my personality and I'm excited to wear it this spring it fits perfect where like it doesn't make my shoulders look ginormous because I have pretty broad shoulders and it also is a little bit restricted but in a good way like I don't feel like I can't move but I also feel like it's not too oversized I would love to know what you think if you are someone who likes ponchos I've had a few ponchos in the past that were made out of wool that were really oversized and I felt like I was wearing a blanket when I went out in them I am at a complete loss for this painting I'm so torn whether I think it's original or not when I saw it I knew it was probably a copy of a Ted de grazia painting and there were quite a few reasons why I think it's probably a copy one it's that it was made on a board instead of a canvas and two there's something about the texture that's just not as thick as the rest of his paintings online and it feels like there's just not enough depth and skill in the layering of the paint I am by no means an expert on Art so I just kind of go off my gut intuition when I see something it appears to be a reverse image of one of my favorite paintings by him now here's the catch and here's the thing that really is throwing me on the very back there is a pencil signature that matches his signature it looks almost identical to his signatures on so I'm very confused I have no idea what to think did somebody just copy his signature on the back I don't know copying his signature in pencil where you can barely read it on the back doesn't seem like something that a fan would do if they were trying to make it look like an original I feel like they would have done the signature down here so I have no idea what to think I would love your advice or your opinion on this if it is an original Ted degrazia it could be quite valuable either way it's beautiful which if you know me you know that's why I typically purchase things so I am very curious and I hope we get an answer at some point as to whether this is an authentic original or whether this is a study that somebody did that was inspired by his original artwork I'm gonna try to do better at giving you updates at the end of a lot of these videos with things from previous videos in the past I've kind of saved them all up in hopes of doing an updates and identification video but I think it's going to to be a little bit easier to just sprinkle in some updates throughout these episodes in fact stay tuned to the end of this video because I'm going to give you an update on three things from the last episode I kind of have quite the theme going on in our front office and right now it's medieval looking lions so I've got my amazing folk art lion chairs that I purchased from Poppy and Dell vintage a few months back I have a beautiful lion art piece from the 1960s that I got at the Oregon coast in Lincoln City and I will have a few more lion things sprinkled in throughout the room including some Hardware which I will show you in an upcoming episode but I wanted to get this lion because it's already ready to hang on the wall and I like my gallery walls to be a mix of a lot of different things not just framed art so oftentimes I will include a mirror I will include a wall hanging something that has fabric maybe something that's brass and shiny even wall Pockets that are made out of pottery are a great addition to a gallery wall so that you don't just have art this is obviously still a work in progress but here are the lion chairs and then I just have this one painting hung so far because I still need to do a second coat on the blue wall but there is my lion you can see I kind of have a theme going so this whole wall is going to be a gallery wall and I think this is going to look great in it tie in my love of lions more of an obsession than a love okay I'm kind of giving you a sneak peek of a few things that you haven't seen yet because I found them in an episode that I'm currently working on editing but I did want to show you the beautiful crystal glasses here with what I have so far for our office you'll probably remember a few episodes back I got these ribbed glasses at Goodwill both of these things you will see in an upcoming episode actually you'll see that in an upcoming episode but that's kind of what I have going on right now for the little drink and beverage and coffee bar and I'm just gonna tell you right now because I'm so excited this beautiful antique piece is going to be for silverware I wasn't sure if I was going to use it to store some jewelry bits in but I think it's going to be perfect to put napkins and silverware in in this little kitchen area I think I got a really good deal on these Stone Art Deco bookends they are beautiful they're made out of multiple kinds of stone they're nice and heavy I got the pair for only 25 these are very old bookends close to 100 years old so even though they had a few faint chips that didn't deter me from them I am all about things that are not perfect I always say wabi-sabi for a reason I believe Perfectly Imperfect is a good thing to be foreign Friedman at that Goodwill I did find some really great things and look at the shape on this pretty much every single one of my bathrooms that I've had I've had some form of a basket that I keep my rolled up towels in and that is personally what I would use this for honestly it could be used for a lot of things including a fruit basket this would look awesome on an island with a bunch of fruit in it now that I say that I might want to keep it I was planning on selling this on my next sale all right we're gonna take this home and we're gonna see how it looks with a bunch of fruit piled in it because I might possibly change my mind I'm sorry so this is what I've been using for a fruit bowl for years now I found this at a thrift store for I think ten dollars long time ago but I kind of like this does it look out of place like the old one you like the old one yeah it's almost like this one's trying too hard this brings you comfort yeah oh it's like classic caldwells well there we have it Jesse says he likes this one I was kind of leaning that way I don't know I'd like your opinion too I'm gonna go with Jesse because I have to live with him but I would love to know your opinion would you do the more Atomic shape hey I made that choice I'm made that choice and I'm happy with it so we've got the atomic one and then we've got The Rustic one which I I just yeah I like The Rustic I already know my answer I'd love to know what you guys think if any of you would pick this another thing to point out is that I have a lot of teak throughout the kitchen and this is more of a walnut stain so it doesn't quite match the kind of redder color of teak but I would still love to know your opinion comment below I don't know why I think it's so funny to have a giant pepper grinder but I just think it's so cute if you're having a dinner party or just having family over for dinner and you ask anybody if they need pepper you go grab this out of the pantry and you come out and just These Are Made in Florence Italy which is my favorite City on this earth when I went to Italy back in 2013 with my friend Michelle we were so lucky in Florence to get to go into one of the stores and watch a local Artisan actually make these it is pretty amazing to see how they apply the gold leafing and do the hand painting so I'm really hoping that I can get in touch with someone in Florence so our group can possibly go see how this is made so if you were in Florence Italy or you have any connections there and you might know a shop that we might be able to visit I would be so grateful for any leads how beautiful is this umbrella slash lampshade when I first saw it over with the electronic stuff I thought oh how clever somebody put the umbrella over there thinking that someone might use it as a lampshade well then I flipped it over and I saw that it actually is a lampshade it has this little wooden dowel that goes through it but it's not seeming to work and holding it up completely so I think that there must be something missing from it on the inside I'm gonna have to play around with it a little bit to see if I can find the right piece that will get it to stay out like this this is such a wonderful lampshade and I think that I have the perfect lamp for this to go on we're gonna have to use our imaginations here but imagine it all fans out beautifully wouldn't that look great with the little koi fish slash Venetian dolphin depends on what you want it to be I just put it on top of another lampshade just to kind of get it to stick out a little bit so you can kind of imagine what it would be like but it's just so beautiful I think I'm gonna try it on a few different lamps almost wonder how this would look on that tulip lamp that I got the other day that could bring in the blue in the bedroom oh okay we're taking this home and we're gonna see if I can make it work there it's dark outside so it's a little bit hard to see but I wanted to show you this lamp now I've still not been able to figure out exactly how to get the shade to open correctly so I literally have a chopstick up there right now holding it just temporarily to kind of give an idea of how this will look once it is properly adjusted I think it does look really beautiful with the lamp and I love that it ties in the wallpaper you can even see it in the window in the reflection but here's what I'm thinking it's too busy it takes away from maybe the sculptural Simplicity of this lamp I don't know I am a more is more obviously but I don't know now we have three options life just got a lot harder comment below option one two or three lamps for 4.99 each they are identical in shape and size but obviously the wood color on them is a little bit different now I am thinking I'm going to use these in my sister's bedroom makeover which is almost finished I've actually been looking for some really small lamps for that space for about two months now at thrift stores and I hadn't come across a pair that I liked enough to purchase I needed something really small and you'll see why in the makeover reveal and I think that these are the exact size that I needed and I just need to get two clip-on lampshades for the top so stay tuned for that upcoming episode here in February and you will see what I end up doing with these does it look awkward am I staying in my like kind of awkward the way that I'm moving because my hands come out so low down here I don't know maybe this isn't the best for hauling in there was no way that I was gonna leave this beautiful piece of pottery behind even though it has a very very large chip it was only ten dollars and they had on the tag that it was made by a local Eugene Potter I wasn't able to find anything in any of my research online about this artist and I am going to attempt to repair and fill and paint this giant ship to me it was a no-brainer to get because I have a lot of broken pottery in my house and I don't typically sell broken pottery but I have no problem putting it in my home especially if it keeps it out of a landfill and the backside is so beautiful as it is and you can't see the chip from the back so even if I'm not able to repair this to a level that I feel like is good enough I can still turn it around and enjoy it it is now time for some up updates from fines that I actually found the same day as all this stuff but it was in last week's episode and we're gonna start with this so many of you commented that this should have originally had a base right here so that it could actually Rock back and forth so huge thank you to everybody who sent me links or emails and helped me identify this it was originally produced in the 1970s it is a Japanese otagiri piece and it would have had a silver cylinder base right here and then it would have just rocked back and forth thank you next up we have the beautiful 1940s rooster lamp this used to be a lamp and as soon as I saw the first comment come through I was like duh that's why it had the wide base at the bottom and the tiny little hole at the top so it would have had probably a brass Rod coming out of the top and it might have been set on a wooden base I'm not quite sure I've never seen the original but I thought that was great that so many of you knew that this used to be a lamp since Jessie is so amazing and talented at rewiring things and making lamps from scratch I considered turning this back into a lamp before selling it but then I remember it I had too much on my plate already so I'm gonna go ahead and sell it as it is it can be used as a vase or a candle holder or if one of you has the skill and the time you can turn it back into a beautiful lamp I saved the best for last so sadly I don't have an update yet from the museum on whether they will accept this donation this is a Peruvian tupu pin and it was used to hold shawls together and typically there would have been two of them one going this direction and one going this direction so after I googled this when I got home and I learned about the history of this piece I then came across this book this book has some incredible history and information in it so I wanted to share it with all of you it's called the colonial Andes tapestries and silver work from 1530 to 1830. by the Metropolitan Museum of Art typically what happens for me is I will find a specific piece like the tupu pin and I go down this Google Wormhole learning about its history and it opens up this whole other world and whole other culture of items that were made back during that period of time this is how over the last decade I've accumulated the knowledge that I have there's still so much to learn and every single day that I go out vintage shopping and thrifting and posting things on YouTube here I am learning more I'm not an expert in vintage or antiques or in any specific genre I always say I know a little bit about a lot of things and this is how I find that information out one of the questions I get asked all the time is how do you know what you know and this is the answer I go to a store I find something that I think is cool whether it's at a thrift store or a vintage store I buy it and then I start doing my homework as with most things in life nothing comes easy and you have to invest a lot of time and patience but over time you really will learn so much and it's just an honor to get to learn about these historical pieces well that wraps up today's episode and our Eugene trip I hope you had fun hanging out with Jesse and I and getting to see the treasures that we found it is going to be a very exciting spring I've got some big news that's coming in the next couple weeks and I really hope that you were just enjoying this journey of Entrepreneurship with me it's been a wild ride these last few years and I am so grateful for every single one of you and I am wishing all of you the best thrifting luck on your adventures out picking and I will see you in a brand new episode soon
