World Tourism Analysis using Power BI

Hello Everyone. Welcome to the Power BI report that I will use to analyze world tourism data The first page that you are currently seeing contains some important links First link is the link to use this report (https://bit.ly/TourismPBI) or links to datasets of world tourism or country populations which I used to prepare this report First data source is the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) database.

This link takes us to the website of UNWTO Tourism Statistics. I downloaded Inbound and Outbound Tourism Bulk Data from this page. Inbound data is about people who visit every country, while outbound is the dataset of people traveling from every country for the purpose of tourism. We will see these datasets soon Second link is the population dataset from UN Population database. Let's have a look at the datasets I downloaded.

This is the Inbound Tourism dataset. There's data for each country along with the annual number of tourists who travel to this country for each year from 1995 to 2019 Outbound are the people who travel FRIOM every country for tourism, divided per year. UN population dataset shows population per country or area from 1950 to 2050 (projected) over intervals of 5 years. I took this data in another Excel sheet and wrote simple Excel formula to calculate the annual population per country assuming linear growth in every 5-year interval Now we have each country's population annually from 1995 to 2019 (to match the years of the UNWTO inbound and outbound datasets) UNWTO divides the world into six regions as shown on this small map.

UNWTO travel data is related to regions rather than countries as we will soon see in the report I originally developed this report to Egypt alone Then I thought we'd want to compare tourism data between Egypt and any other country So I generalized the report. You can select the Main Country which is Egypt in our case then choose the Comparison Country. I selected Tunisia here as an example Before digging into tourism data for these two countries, let's have an overview of travel trends from 1995 to 2019 The two charts to the left show the total number of people who travel for tourism per year, Different colors represent the different UNWTO regions This shows trends of world tourism. It has been increasing year over year until 2019 which had a sudden drop

Charts to the right show Departures per 1 Million population This is an important indicator as we will see later in the report when we need to target specific regions I can also select a specific region from the above filter to show its trends alone For example in the middle east a drop between 2010 and 2011 is clear and it's most probably because of the Arab Spring events Let's see the next page in the previous page we saw overview of tourism trends between 1995 and 2019 regardless the country Let's see Arrivals Percentage per Region Here I compare between the main country (top) and comparison country (bottom) These charts show percentage participation of each region in the total arrivals to each of the two countries For example, it's obvious that Europe comprises the largest percentage of arrivals to Egypt in all years While in Tunisia, pattern is different than Egypt. In the latest years, African tourists are the majority in Tunisia These indicators are important when we compare with a country that's similar to ours, we can target those who come to competing countries Let's now look at this chart This one shows actual data rather than percentages from each region Take care of the change in vertical axis scale It's clear that European tourists are the majority in Egypt every single year, As expected, 2011 numbers are less than 2010 numbers in both Egypt and Tunisia. Most probably due to revolutions. Then numbers started to recover moving forward. in 2016 a drop occurred in Egypt and started to recover from 2017 to 2019 Now let's check the next page in the report This page is very useful The line that is drawn in the dark color is the main country while the grey line represents the comparison country I will set Comparison Country to "No" so that we analyze Egypt alone Now we are looking at Egypt data only Each of these six charts represents arrivals to Egypt from one of UNWTO regions Top left is Africa, and so on Horizontal axis represents years from 1995 to 2019 in each chart Vertical axis is the number of arrivals to Egypt per year for each region It's obvious that Arrivals from Europe are much higher than those coming from any other region followed by arrivals from Middle East Africa, Americas, and East Asia and Pacific are less than Middle East and look almost the same and it's obvious that the region from which we receive tourists is South Asia When we have a situation like this.

Europe data is much higher than other so it doesn't allow us to see other region trends Thus, I will uncheck Europe from the filter to the right Now trends of other regions are clearer Arrivals from Africa have been increasing in the last few years Let's remove Middle East to compare more accurately between the rest of the regions Now Africa is obviously bringing more tourists than the other three regions in the past years This might mean that Africa is a potential market for tourists in Egypt in the near future Now let's bring back the comparison country It's clear the tourists coming to Tunisia from Africa are much more than those come to Egypt from the same region while tourists from Americas and East Asia and Pacific to Egypt, are much more than those who visit Tunisia Selecting back all regions, European tourists who come to Egypt are much higher than those who go to Tunisia at least in the last three years Now let's go to the next page, Please remember that the largest number of tourists to Egypt comes from Europe, then middle east And the least region is South Asia Now, let's see the next chart This page shows average expenditure per tourists while they are in Egypt or Tunisia, per region I will cancel comparison for now These charts show the timeline of the average expenditure per tourists while they stay in Egypt (in US Dollars) and this is shown per region in each of these six mini charts Something is worth noticing here South Asian tourists are the ones who spend more than every other region while they are in Egypt although, remember from the previous chart they are the least number of arrivals But their average expenditure is much higher than those from Europe Unlike the previous chart, European tourists spend least average amounts in Egypt
