We wish you the best, & continued success. Congratulations! Hello PN graduates! My name is Irene O'Brien & I'm the dean of the School of Health Sciences. As we've all seen during the past year, health care is a vital component of our society & the need for highly skilled and dedicated practitioners, is important than ever before.
As dean of the School, I truly believe that a special group of individuals are called to these professions. Today, as we mark your completion of the Practical Nursing program, we celebrate not only your success, but also your commitment to protecting, preserving & supporting the health and well-being of others – often, the most vulnerable of our society. Your chosen career will be challenging, heart-wrenching, fulfilling, and incredibly rewarding. Doing what you love will shine through everyday in your professional practice as well as personal ethics. This job will not describe what you do. It will define who you are & shape who you will become.
Congratulations to all of the Class of 2021. We are so proud of you! Please know that we wish you every success. Hello everyone. My name is Chantille
& I have been given the incredible honour of addressing you today as the Valedictorian for the College of the North Atlantic’s Practical Nursing graduating class. I’d like to start by thanking all of you for joining us in this celebration. On our graduation, we should feel proud of our accomplishments. I am proud of myself for the goals that I have reached throughout my education.
I am proud of all my classmates for reaching this goal with me, & I am so proud of every graduate celebrating with us today. Graduating from college is an amazing achievement in life, & something that we should allow ourselves to take pride in. The Practical Nursing course, as I’m sure we can all agree, is a difficult one. It required hours spent
studying, one too many energy drinks, tears shed over the stress of another failed med math test or A&P exam, & more motivation than one person can have alone. It took support from all of our instructors, our campus administrators, our student development officers, our guidance counsellors, our friends, & our families to get where we are today. But most importantly, we needed the support from our classmates, those who could begin to understand how we felt, because they were right there beside us, sharing this experience with us. I can confidently say that the friends
I made in this program were a tremendous contributor to my success. A huge thank you to everyone who supported us on this incredible journey to reaching this milestone. We have overcome many obstacles over the duration of our program, so we truly deserve to cherish this special moment & hold it in our memories for years to come. Perhaps the biggest challenge was facing together the unrelenting COVID-19 pandemic & the uncertainties it brought. Seeing COVID cases rise & going into lockdown showed us how much we often take for granted: the ability to pack a room full of people, to travel to new places, to hug our friends, & to smile at our patients, clients, & residents.
However, through it all, we did not let our fears for the future hold us back. Today, we can officially add the letters LPN to our signature. We are Licensed Practical Nurses, we are real nurses. But we are more than just a nurse. We have been taught that nurses have many roles. We are decision-makers on deciding the best interventions for our patients, we are educators about illness & wellness, we are advocates to protect & promote our patient’s rights, we are learners to keep current about healthcare trends & new technologies, & we are care givers to people when they are at their most vulnerable.
In closing, I would like to leave you with a quote from Florence Nightingale, who once said “I attribute my success to this – I never gave or took any excuse.” So make no excuses for your actions but be honest & accountable. Take no excuses if you feel things can be done safer, more effective & more efficient, become a champion for change. I believe that all of us graduating today has what it takes to be a successful, phenomenal nurse, & I wish you all every success in the future.
When the days are tough and the nights are long, remember why you chose to become a nurse. Remember that it takes a special kind of person to be a nurse. Remember your compassion. And always remember – give & take no excuses.
