We Won't Make THIS Mistake Again! | Boat Life Ep. 40
one two three four [Music] downward dog [Music] so [Music] [Music] hi i'm dana and that's my husband lou for the past five years we've been on a mission to live creatively it all started when we quit our jobs in new york moved abroad bought a rusty old van named odie fixed him up in the mountains in spain drove through most of europe wrote a book sold the van and bought a sailboat our next goal is to circumnavigate the earth in our 1976 rasmus 35 but first we need to prepare penelope for the voyage of a lifetime so welcome to the winter build series good morning so while lou gets everything into the car because we're going to the boat today to work on it i thought i would tell you a little story about what inspired the projects that we're going to be working on today so lou and i used to live in a van lived in a van for like two years traveling around europe it was magical but one of the biggest mistakes we made when we were living or doing our van build was that we didn't prioritize air flow enough well we did we spent almost a month insulating our van because we really really wanted to make sure that it didn't like just soak up all the heat because we were gonna use solar power so that's another tricky thing so it's like if you're prioritizing solar power then you're gonna always be parking in a place that has sun or trying to at least and then that sun just heats up your vehicle so it was a basically a sauna it's so hot in here i know it's like 100 degrees outside no joke it's probably like 105 in here you think yeah oh my god this is gonna help but also the issue with having the solar panels over the whole top of the van is that we didn't have an extractor fan on the top of the van which is really really helpful to create that air circulation thank you love hmm that's the last of our macadamia nut milk oh i'll have to stop by the store it seems hot so anyway the van we were always so overheated because we wanted to you know follow the sun the whole point of the van was to live in the summer and things like that so we chased the sun around europe but i remember like one ridiculously hot night especially sticks out in my mind we were in meteora which is like inland greece it was absolutely gorgeous but it was 102 i think outside all day even in the night because it was inland there was no breeze it was probably like 105 degrees inside our van and we're just like laying there sweating oh no it's hot the water's hot yeah that's not nice not what i was expecting whatever it still feels good well not clean but and just wishing that we had made a better system whether that was like installing fans or i'm not really sure what else we could have done in the van other than installing fans but what we know is that we also really want to prioritize being in warm climates with our boat penelope granted it is winter right now so it's hard to imagine being warm enough to just run around in a bathing suit and jump in the water because it's been so cold but i'm trying to have a future thinking mindset and be like future dana and lou are going to want to have a system that allows them to be comfortable or like somewhat comfortable in extreme heat so these might be too big all right so we are on our way to west marine for a quick little pit stop i have to get some wires some hose clamps and just a couple little things to complete this project and then we're gonna head to the boat maybe have a little snack because i'm kind of already hungry and then we'll get started on the project it's gonna be really fun today because dana hasn't seen a lot of the things that i've changed on the boat so it's always fun to like show her all of the new additions and improvements and yeah it's like one of my favorite parts of the build so while he's in the store getting a few things for today's project i thought that we could keep going with the story of basically how living in the van it was so cool to be like living out in the elements but the thing was it would just get so crazy hot that it made life really uncomfortable especially when we were trying to edit like we would be needing a lot of power parking in a super sunny spot and then just dripping in sweat at our standing desk trying to work um and that's just something that we really needed to figure out to make a better situation but i'm having such a hard time conceptualizing like summer weather when we have literally snow everywhere you know and it's like i think that's one of the things that's super interesting it's really dark it's super interesting about long-term dreams and like long-term projects is that you have to consider the fact that like the situation that you're in right now you are doing the work for something that you can't even like it's not even tangible right now but if you just like keep showing up every single day you can slowly chip away at it and like the time will pass either way and i think that's something that lou and i with the winter build since it wasn't like our original plan to be working on the boat all winter and like living here and all that we really wanted to take the boat somewhere special we had to wrap our mind around something about the fact that it's not like we're wasting time right now the adventure is still happening we're just gonna be making our future experience that much more comfortable that much more like fun because the thing is it's like if you're comfortable in your home you're gonna be able to have more fun and we won't have to do those projects in complicated places so it's just like a mind shift of like this actually isn't wasted time this is time that we're investing in our dreams putting that effort into our boat and making our home better and so i think it's just so interesting when we have these preconceived notions of how we want things to go and then when they don't pan out that way it can be a moment of like panic or frustration or anger and all those things and like granted we definitely had those but then if you can let go of that stuff and look at all the good things that can come out of that situation like for us it's like we can live in a house we can be comfortable we can take showers whenever we want have a dishwasher like sleep really well in the comfort of a quiet house compared to like parking lots or like busy marinas and things like that we can recharge and yes that was a really long time we were like i mean we're gonna be in the house i think it's like seven months or something which is ages but in the long term it's really not and it's like so special to have that time so just a food for thought get what you need got the wire did you get the thing to hold the wire the little plastic thing yep i did i got them all on my kangaroo patch well done [Music] you excited to see all the new features of our beautiful boat i am very very excited from the photos i've seen it seems like you've been working very hard and i really appreciate it you're really helping our dreams come true we got a new couch we got a new bed yeah half of the propane tank fixed you're doing wiring too i think all sorts of stuff all sorts of things that now i don't have to do you're here for the fun day that's all i want to be here for [Music] no you're always here for all of it yeah it's true but it is nice to show up and just have easy projects yeah i've been hard at work doing non-boat related things also important here we are the snow is melting a little right yeah [Music] can i pass this to you yeah so all of this is new it looks gorgeous i'm very impressed wow so crazy that you can just go all over and not be worried about breaking it so you leveled all of this stuff whoa and you put in dividers that is sick wow that's so cool yeah sorry they're not attached yet because i want to finish them but now you can store food in each cubby like dry food yeah you might want to cut out like a little angle here because water should go running through it'll fit yeah yeah it's not going to be perfectly flush oh okay wow it looks so cool this one makes storage so much easier right yeah i'm really impressed because then you can actually like stack stuff up and you don't have to worry about it switching like sliding all around yeah good job i'm proud of you thank you one of my favorite parts oh my gosh lou it's so good right wow new bed wow so much better there's no like give in the middle before when you would sit on it or like if you put your weight in one section it would like bow [Music] i needed the fancy hole cutting so you can get it out like here like that yeah oh they're a little bit heavier you know and they're cool whoa oh my gosh how's that so supportive all right i really like that should i take a nap no oh that's good the new feature is that the front two are separate oh sorry details you know but you're right that is so much better because before it was this long piece and it was actually kind of unwieldy and i always felt like this one was gonna break you know oh it got dirt on it that's okay wow this is so much stronger did you have to put a middle thing oh no it already had the support there no i had to build it you built extra support right yeah well it's very good snack time i really like it isn't it nice like should i even do the cushion project it's so nice now you got to do this pretty fun no i'm excited i can't believe this is so nice and supportive it's also like an armrest over here this is like lounging all right i was nervous about this section but i think this will be my new spot i'll just have to crawl in you know because this is where i sat always last summer but look at this you can even go like this right so the plan for today hopefully is to install four new fans that i bought two in the front bedroom the v-berth and two in the back bedroom the aft cabin and then we'll test them out because the batteries are all working so we can actually see if all of our wiring works and we can see how well these fans work and yeah it's a really easy project but i feel like it's going to make a huge difference even if we don't really need it right now in the middle of winter this will be really nice when it's 105 degrees and we're in the tropics so like i was saying earlier the hardest part of the heat when you're in like a i don't know a van or a boat situation and we found is actually sleeping during the day it's hot but you can manage because it's like funny but then when you're trying to sleep it can get out of control so having fans in the bedroom very nice we had little like um battery operated ones that my mom gave us last year and so but we always had to charge them and it was kind of like it was amazing because that really made us sleep better but we wanted to have a long-term solution and that's what these are these are like wired in fans so we're gonna put them each here which at first is like oh gosh you're gonna kick it but it actually can tilt so you could have it like this and then it goes like that so you can tuck it away which is nice and then here when it's blowing it's not like on top of your face because we were trying to figure out where to put it and it's like it's such a small space but you don't need a fan like right here i would just be nervous that my hair would get like coffin oh my gosh like this i'd turn over and then that'd be a horrible way to wake up so i think this is gonna be a better spot and it's also nice because we can just screw it in easy right here right exactly and you can tilt it like you can bring it down yeah you can go like this you can go like this and this also has rotation you got the creme de la creme lou all right should we install them yeah let's do it [Music] it does not fit so the backing plate that we have we don't have any screws that fit it so i'm going to run to the hardware store while lou does some other stuff on the boat because when you get to go on the chore run you get to be in the warm car so i'll warm up in the car while i'm doing getting the screws that we need and then i'll be back in a jiffy can you see that yeah that looks good that's what you wanted right uh-huh okay i will be home in a jiffy thank you love you bye oh hey hey you got the stuff i got the stuff what did you get uh i have it all here i have look at this there you go thank you is that what you wanted i think so hopefully it's really windy and apparently we're getting five to eight inches of snow what's that who said ari wow yeah tomorrow big snowstorm coming through that's awesome yeah really fun he's getting the snow plow ready for the yard that's cool and yeah that's it let me get it's windy [Music] well i see that it went in perfectly but from here looks crooked perspective whatever good job thanks babe it's really fun right it's good times right yeah quality saturday afternoon whoa too much you did it looks good i see him yep there you go perfect thank you clean these cups you bring them if you want [Music] [Music] so is it time [Music] okay oh okay i can't see it with your hand in my face maybe if you move this hand away let me just do it there you go yeah okay yep good yes [Music] shall we test it out yeah i feel like we should have tested it sooner okay oh moment of truth are you ready oh my gosh good thing we already organized all the ways let's hope this one works oh a few thousand when i wired there you go babe good job that's awesome wow danger danger the fan's been on for two seconds and you already got your finger in it no uh maybe don't touch it when it's moving oh oh they can book it three speeds three speeds three speeds and they have timers yeah this is the cool part about the fans that we've got they have timer so you can put it on and i think six hours nine hours three hours three hours and that's really good good job wow it actually does have a lot of power right it's also cold right now so obviously the air coming out is cold when it's like a million degrees out it'll just be blowing a million degrees air at you but it's better than nothing cool wow that was a good project thanks for bringing me to the vote for an easy project day yeah we bring you for all the decorative oh that's nice i love it yeah i just like are we gonna roll over and hit them i guess no then they're not gonna be there they're going to be up here that's how they go so now just imagine going to sleep but it's so hot out and this is going to be a constant you should have [Applause] in the middle of the night when you're sleepy and just trying to move the they had ones with cages for children i should have gotten you should have gone yeah 100 is it working it actually is lovely wow instant air conditioning there you go so you're gonna make me pizza yeah pizza party tonight i am so pumped on that we haven't had pizza in so long and lou has perfected a new crust technique oh it's so good it's gonna be amazing do i have basil yeah all right so the pizza dough has almost doubled in size it is 7 44 much later than we normally eat so we're just gonna power on and hope that it's good it looks amazing thank you so much for making pizza look at all these amazing toppings we've got onions and potatoes and artichokes mushrooms olives basil and tomato sauce i'm so excited there we go can i smell it oh my gosh blue yay life is good how many pizzas do you think we're gonna get we could probably make three big ones thank you really today's been a very fun day it's a good one right yeah [Music] let's
