We Tried Moroccan Street Food in Marrakech
eamon and i live out of this self-converted sprinter van so we can travel the world bringing our home with us means that we can easily make our favorite meals while being parked anywhere and while we love to attempt local cuisines this is the worst thing we've ever made sometimes it's just better to go straight to the source so today we will be eating nothing but local moroccan dishes on the streets of marrakech i didn't even put milk in my coffee this morning just wanted to leave all the room i'm so excited oh yeah you've lost your salesman's touch boom oh you feed it yeah yeah it's like mama when i hold him i cry hello we know that muhammad's picking us up but we don't know what vehicle he's in or what he looks like muhammad oh yeah how are you doing man nice to meet you nice to meet you nice to meet you guys this is uh amen my girlfriend amen your name sounds like my name we haven't been to marrakech in a while so just driving into the city is an adventure in and of itself muhammad's doing amazing we have so many questions for him like how do you take a driving test here and how does all this work you guys ready for some breakfast oh yes let's start with some bisara we need to make sure we do not eat too much bread today i know bread needs to be limited i know okay this doesn't really look like bacon and eggs so stop number one bisara for breakfast we are having a fava bean soup with olive oil cumin on top and of course pan pan bread makes me love it nice way to start the day nothing's overwhelming about it it's just nice it's creamy mild you got your protein from the fava beans well i could picture putting this in like a to-go cup and walking down the street you know like a latte like a thermos of this in the morning so this is harissa this is a crushed cayenne pepper with olive oil and probably some lime lime juice and garlic salt garlic to me it tastes more like a tepanad like it's more like a dip than just a hot sauce but as i said i could totally eat this on its own nothing says morocco like a little tea to start the day typically there's a green tea base and then whatever herbs they can find so this one has mint and sugar lots and lots of sugar three dollars for the whole thing for for the three of us yeah thank you for breakfast oh yeah sure he is a water provider he's not selling anything okay he's just you know providing water for a open but today is friday on friday some moroccans eat couscous says nab or just take the day off this is what i love the most hello there's so many juice bags number 57 yeah oh this is the best guy what number are you 55 don't be fooled they will all hustle you very hard yes and honestly i'm sure their juices are all really similar hello hello 48 48. how many are there muhammad yeah i think they're in the 80s oh my gosh yeah i was just asking muhammad how it's possible that 80 juice stalls exist one by one by one and he said that marrakesh normally has eight million tourists per year and but that was good fun next stop has got to be one of my favorite parts of morocco the dates figs dried fruits nuts yes amy and i are typically quite confused on what date and fig and thing is what because there's 400 varieties and 100 varieties of dates here in morocco it's so hard to describe because it literally tastes like a doughnut like a krispy kreme doughnut you're going to love it oh my gosh this is a nice thing they're so good that's the best way i've ever had yeah muhammad has been doing all the negotiating he got us some dates and figs at a really good price this is a kilo of mejool dates and this one is 140 their hams and we got a half a kilo of the dried figs this costs a 45 45 i think that's a good deal yeah that's a legit price we've just arrived at the busiest spot wouldn't have stopped bread is very very fresh still warm not too much and then we've got what i think are fava beans but not mash this time tastes very fresh simple not too salty the beans like have a a buttery olive oil taste really good yeah the lentils have so much flavor i would say cumin cumin sweetened smoked paprika it's really nice muhammad just said this is not even lunch yet yum i think cayman enjoyed himself anybody else need me to finish anything here i'm still going strong it's only one o'clock though and something else we notice is that these people really do act as a family so there was one gentleman that came over who was counting out his three dirham asking how much a bowl of soup was which was for dirham and the guy said keep your three dirham take the bowl of soup just helping each other out i love that so this is a community bakery they of course make their their own bread but they also make some of the they bake the the bread for some people here in the neighborhood the people they will make the bread at home and they will bring it here to be baked i got two theorem right here all right how about juggle can you juggle no no no no you don't do that you wasted bread oh wow these are good oh amen that one's extra special plus it smells like heaven in here it smells amazing i could spend all day you're not gluten free huh oh that would be hard in morocco thank you we're going for lunch now yeah i can do it i got a big shirt on today oh cool very nice this is stunning we have a 17 course lunch let's call it starting with hagrid which is a moroccan soup it's a tomato based soup with lentils some pasta you always squeeze some lime on top and then have it with something sweet really nice it almost tastes like a little minestrone-y but a little thicker really nice and then when you eat this before or you just you know you do it a little bit now a little bit later so this beautiful dish is a traditional appetizer we've got five different salads here obviously this one looks more like a pico de gallo potato zucchini that's what it's called pumpkin and aubergine and then that is a yogurt sauce in the middle but i would assume you could eat this with bread or just with a fork yeah with bread or with your hands with your hands okay yeah why not so a tagine is this stew-like dish that utilizes like a slow cooking method pretty good but okay not shy at my level okay perfect okay step up your tag now it's time for the most important meal of the day it's friday it's friday it's friday yeah now there's no pressure here but muhammad said that his mother forms couscous balls for him on fridays at home yeah and i wanted to have the mama experience so muhammad are you a mama's boy yeah yes i'm ready oh you feed it yeah yeah just like mama okay it tastes better from muhammad chad such a cool experience who would have thought huh oh yeah well feeding bix oh my god full experience baby something else just appeared on the table this is uh it's a flatbread layered flatbread and it has some nuts on it and some chocolate and honey and this is just oranges with cinnamon are we feeding for you mohammed for you are you stick to youtube there is always room in our tummies for a pomegranate juice so we've just stopped to fuel up fresh antioxidants on the street nothing better how many pomegranates in one juice here there's got to be at least three primal carrots per juice i can tell you're about to juggle i just knew you were going to try uh-oh careful my dropping my bias don't get cocky don't get cocky wow okay put them down put them down okay nice nice i am still hopped up on sugar but i couldn't say no we're gonna try some moroccan cookies this is like a honey cracker it's very light very airy almost like a like a shortbread oh a shortbread almost like a shortbread but like coated in honey it almost looks like the end of the drumstick uh-huh uh-huh i was expecting to be really crunchy this next cookie is called spakia yup it's deep fried and then soaked in honey it's like exploding juice on me yeah yeah yeah it is extremely sweet yeah not for me i mean you could deep fry a leather shoe and dip it in honey and i think it would taste good i like the first one better that's a lot the market is starting to explode now this is where marrakech really comes alive is at night and you can see the volume really picking up this has got to be the most refreshing place in all of america yes the mint stalls i don't think we're going to be eating here tonight but if you come to marrakech you need to eat at one of these food vendors they pop up their restaurants every single night and the food is fantastic good vibes they're all trying to hustle you to get you to eat there is the best it's got to be the best huh for everyone it's good okay it's only meat i don't eat meat yes only meats looks beautiful not for me though not for me i know it looks good number 55 is good too number 55. just to reiterate all of these food stalls were not here a couple of hours ago each and every night they have to set up their entire camp uh we have eaten all day all day no i am oh you got it like 75 everybody here is the same yeah same food same price yeah the difference between us just the quality holy smokes 22. yeah
