assignments for from in world war ii they didn't want too many lights on because they were afraid that the enemy meaning the japanese or the germans would be able to locate our cities at night and mamas so you would turn off the lights at a certain time and because you had less light available you would use more of the sun's light so you would change your schedule to get the maximum amount of sunshine during the day and then also later after the war they also maintain the daylight savings time to make it easier for the farmers to gather their crops [Music] you know the filipino uh helped stop here from sheltered from the harsh sun wind and summer drought of the columbia river gorge ice age orphans still thrive in the chilly constant climate between these canyon walls tucked into crevices and clinging to cliffs endemics are the exclusive residents of the gorge the concentration of these and other rare plants makes this a special botanical area and a favorite spot for naturalness [Music] oregon solidvantia raises a few islands in the willamette river but here you can walk up and introduce yourself look for its circular delicate indented leaves tall socks and dainty white flowers on wet cliffs near waterfalls this one organs laundress spiky scarlet petals sparkle delicately in the swirling mists of anita gorge found only in the columbia river gorge and in the snake canyon this lovely plant thrives near waterfalls and moist cliffs oh here we go clings to dry rocky shelves that just east of anita gorge the sub alpine plant is usually seen only by rock climbers on exposed outcrops at higher elevations historic river highway originally carried motorists over this bridge and through onita tunnel the route was changed and the tunnel filled with debris during the 1940s when falling rock posed safety problems in here oh sorry and then this is when it was open and over here you can see some original pictures it's very neat this is from the 1920 west portal of onita tunnel about 1920. you can see very closely it's like an old-time model t or similar car i don't know and over here east portal of onita tunnel shortly after completion in 1914 and you can see the old car the 1914.
