Walk around Lisbon with me | Walking tour of Lisbon | Black women travel
hi there it's Cat and I'm in Lisbon. I'm in my lovely hotel room. I was supposed to go to Sintra today but there's a train strike. I got to the train station like an hour before I needed to be there and I was like, "Hi, I'd like to buy (in Portuguese) I'd like to buy... "Gostaria de comprar um bilhete de comboio para Sintra." Something like that: I want to buy train ticket to Sintra. I was trying to get on the 8:40
a.m. train. And the guy behind the counter, he had like the attitude of a DC government worker. He was like, "9:41." I was like, "Oh yeah, no 8:41 is the one I'd like." He's like, "9:41." I said, "But I think there's an 8:41 and then there's like an 8:59 and then there's like a 9:15?" And he's like, "9"41." And I showed him the schedule I had pulled up on my phone. He's like, "Forget about. Ain't no trains except for the 9:41, lady; I told you!
I was like, "Okay. Where's the bus station?" he's like ain't no buses to sintra i was like this emma f no buses to synthra now that's some nonsense let me just you know so i got out of the line and i looked it up and there's a bus um leaving allegedly at like whatever time that would get me to synthra at the time i needed to be for this 10 o'clock tour so i go back to my hotel i ask for a little bit of help in getting to the bus station it's right up the street uphill uphill and um not a bad hill but still uphill so i was like okay i can make it i can make it it's like 10 minutes away so i'm gonna be there like three minutes before you buy the ticket on the bus okay okay okay so i'm like hustling and bustling hustling and bustling hustle i was like the hell i'm on vacation what am i hustling and bustling for i'm on vacation i ain't hustling in buslin so i just i was like you know what i'm in one of my favorite cities in the world why don't you spend the day in one of my favorite cities in the world why don't i just do that so that's what i'm gonna do and i'm gonna take you along with me so i can show you some of my favorite things in one of my favorite cities in the world so come along come along all right so we're walking to the metro uh metro stop avenida which is on avenida which is a pretty um flat street central there's the entrance to the metro so there goes the train on the other side so we'll just wait here on the platform for our train to come into the station and while we're waiting let me introduce myself i'm cat and i help black and brown women find more joy in their lives through international travel international retreats and holistic self-care and if you'd like to hear about those things please subscribe to the channel and like this video all right our train's here so here we are just uh in the car we only have to go a few stops it's not very far um and you'll notice here that the the seats are made out of cork which is a major um export from portugal cork is very versatile they use it for a lot of different things okay so we're coming out here we only had to go a few stops and we have arrived at senta apollonia which is a metro station and it's also as you'll see it's also a train station so if you're ever taking the train from lisbon to porto you can just come to santa apollonia and take the train down from that stage down that end of the platform you see you can catch trains here so it's super convenient unfortunately right now there's a rail strike in portugal so you will see very long lines in the train station of people trying to figure out how to get where they're going which is why i had such a hard time getting to sintra today so we're coming out and we're basically at the base of the hill right at the level of the river of the duro and um you'll see there's actually a a big cruise ship right on the in the distance there's a cruise ship right there in the distance there all right so right next to the train station and uh trying to figure out which way do i want to go up this hill you can do it the easy well it's not easy you can do it this way which is basically straight up i am not a fan or you can go up the hill kind of the zigzaggy way which is a little less painful still a little rough but slightly less painful so i'm here for it yeah it's a leg day a lot of stairs also it's like 95 degrees so um the benefit of climbing up these stairs is that you get the views that you don't get when you're on river level you can only get the views by climbing up or going up the hill some kind of way so um this is the ferra deladra which happens so we're in the neighborhood of grasa um and it's flea market day which i think is saturdays and tuesdays um last time i was here was in november and it was like a rainy saturday and it was very sparse um and it was still like you know covet had kind of shut things down so it's good to see that it's back i'm not really collecting things but if i lived here i would probably come here to get some uh some bits and bobs this is um my obsession ceramics so of course i had to stop by this ceramic store which is one of my favorites in lisbon um they have some beautiful handmade ceramics and i definitely got my eyes full of ceramics um i actually did buy a mug there i love this place all right so let's keep walking we're gonna leave the fair faire de labrada we're going to leave the flea market area and head west so we're heading uh in the direction of the miradora de grasse miraduros are this like overlook the places where you can see amazing views of the city like i said you gotta you gotta work for it gotta climb for it but here's a little stretch of flatness for slightly less steep hills so it's hot it's time for lunch i'm gonna get some lunch oh yeah so in portugal they serve the beers in little glasses which is super helpful in the summer so you get a small glass of beer it stays cold and then you get another small glass of beer if you want yeah it was delicious bathroom break and we're off so yeah we're walking towards the miraduru de grasa i might stop off and get some gelato because it's so hot uh to the right is the uh grasa church for people to hang out and meet meet their friends and have a coffee or something to drink and or just hang out and as you can see this is just stellar views i mean it's worth the walk if you see um the trees over at the very top right that's another mirador anyway that's another miradura that's probably i think that's the highest one in the city this one's pretty high and luck fortunately they're building um a funicular or some kind of elevator to bring people up because i have walked up that hill a few times and it's no joke there's the church of grasa all right so we've got a miraduro's we're at one of the higher points in town so there's almost nowhere to go from here but down i'm not going down those stairs i'm gonna take it the easy way just like with going up there's an uh steep way and there's a slightly less steep way and if you don't feel like walking you can take a tuk-tuk those are strictly for tourists but super helpful i guess so you'll find like viewpoints at kind of surprising places you'll just kind of be walking down the street and all of a sudden like a viewpoint will open up for you and you can see like this amazing view of the city and there's the senora de monte um miraduro that i talked about if you see the trees in the top of the frame so yeah not every place on in lisbon is crowded there's quiet streets and there's um noisy streets and this is a lovely cafe that uh has an incredible view so i just come here and have an iced coffee on this very hot day chill out listen to some music for a minute catch my breath and take in this amazing view back on the road yeah the streets can get really slippery here if you've probably heard the cassette calzadas the little um stones that they use to make the sidewalk and the roads can get really slippery but they're beautiful yes it's hot here's another viewpoint it's just like in between a couple buildings just gorgeous and those stairs again mamma mia yeah the sidewalks are pretty skinny so a lot of times if it's a quieter street you'll find yourself walking in the middle of the street oh what's this like part of the castle baby or maybe it's pretending to be part of the castle and more stairs stairs and more stairs up down down up yep so it feels like every time you think you're going to be on a flat street for a second it turns out that there's actually another set of stairs to be taken on it's how it is in lisbon city of seven house so i went down the stairs and i ended up following google maps what they were telling me to do looked like some kind of maze but i just i had to believe so here we are this guy looks about as lost as i am his phone is telling him it's real holy [ __ ] okay yep this is uh the neighborhood somebody's front door there yeah there's a lot of water on the sidewalk i was trying to figure out like at some point i had to like start holding onto the to the rail because i was trying to get nosy here okay yeah the sidewalk is like starting to be wet for some reason anyway just keep going google tells me it's okay i really did not want to fall on my butt these wet sidewalks just not cute hi guys i don't know why they're rinsing down the sidewalk okay okay okay all right i made it through the maze and here i am um all right so yeah this kind of irritated me like why did nobody tell me that there was a an escalator like i didn't know that there were actually escalators outdoors i think maybe next time i'm gonna do a tour with as many escalators as i possibly can because this right here this right here is a bun buster i wish you could see my face right now i'm not thrilled no pain no gain you get that view there's a castle up at the top see martin money square and the castle above i was not happy about the stairs but if you don't climb them you don't get the view and there's so many different views just to see like from different angles and different heights ah yes all right we made it up that set of stairs anyway okay is he gonna ride this motorcycle no he's not riding his motorcycle down the stairs i just was waiting for that but no okay we gotta go up this hill all right there we go okay so i had to stop and get a bottle of water because i was parched thank you little fruit stand i really appreciate your bottle of water and onward and upward all right finally got to a relatively flat area parched but yes all right wide open spaces so yeah i'm kind of looking at these buildings and looking but i'm really actually quite distracted by my next destination i'm like yeah yeah nice buildings nice buildings but i'm actually ready to get to where i'm going one of my favorite places especially on a day like today when it's so hot it's like an oasis a shimmering oasis gelato perfection yes ma'am i got the avocado and the lemon delicious all right that was worth the wait i think all right so we made kind of a loop a lot of steps and we're heading back down the hill towards avenida yeah it's a major street i think it's got like two lanes going one way two lanes going the other way a sort of pedestrian uh strip in the middle with trees it's one of the greener streets in the city i think and here we are back where we started thanks for walking with me i hope you enjoyed seeing lisbon from my point of view drop any questions you have in the um in the comments and i'll see if i can answer them any questions about lisbon portugal yep time for some green wine and some air conditioning thanks for watching bye
