So, before we get into all the interesting attributes of Selangor, let's first learn on the history of the name itself. The name Selangor, basically comes from when a warrior who was on his way from the Portugese conquest, sets upon an unnamed state. Feeling tired, he tried to take a nap. As he was about to fall asleep, a fly flew by him.

Not being able to withstand the fly, the warrior tried to swat it. However, it was persistent, causing the warrior to just give up. He decided to take a look around the place. As he walked, he found himself

taking quite a bit of liking to the place. He decided to build a settlement there. Remembering the event with the fly, he decided to name the place '<i>Selangau</i>', of which translates to 'a fly'. Another version of the origin of the name comes from Kuala Mentangau, a mangrove swamp of which an area which the seafarers often frequented.

It evolves into a settlement and as the name was shortened, it eventually became Selangor. Selangor became part of the Federation of Malaysia in 1963 with Kuala Lumpur as its capital. However, in 1974 Kuala Lumpur was handed to the federal government. Shah Alam was subsequently appointed the capital, and remains so until this day.

As of 2020's data, there are as much as 6530000 people who resides in Selangor. THAT'S A LOT! In fact, it was the largest amongst the states of Malaysia. Majority of the people are Malay, with 3597000.

Chinese comes second, and up next is Indians. In term of gender, male makes up the majority with 3.4 millions. The remaining 3.13 millions goes to the other half, which is the female. As expected, Muslims makes up the most of the Selangorians, with 57.9%. Second place would fall to the Buddhists who takes up to 24.4%. Meanwhile, Hinduism and Christianity takes up the rest of the spots.

My name is Muhammad Danial Haziq bin Zulkifli, and I'll be explaining you guys about the flag and emblem of Selangor, maps of Selangor and also the arts we have in Selangor. So, let's check it out! First one is the flag of Selangor. As you can see, it has 4 chambers which have colours yellow and red.

The yellow one symbolizes royalty, while the red one symbolizes bravery. It also have white crescent and star, refers to the religion of Islam. And you can see that the star has 5 points, that represents the pillars Rukun Islam. And next let's look at the emblem of Selangor.

So, as you can see the part that have the red spear in the middle is called Sambu-warna. And you know that it also have crescent and star that refers to religion of Islam. On the right side, there's a short '<i>kris</i>' and on the left side, there's long '<i>kris</i>'. The bellow has written Jawi word that reads '<i>Dipelihara oleh Allah</i>' or 'Under the Protection of Allah' is the motto of the state. The belt rope represents the belt as used by the ancient warriors. So, next is the maps of Selangor.

Selangor has an area of 7.956 squared kilometer, extending the east coast. Selangor is divided into 9 parts of districts, and the capital is Shah Alam. Mah Meri arts is beautiful handcrafted works of the indigenous Mah Meri people of the Carey Island in Selangor. There is a museum that displays hundreds of statues, masks and sculptures out of mangrove hardwood. Being truly world class in terms of craftsmanship and quality, they have received the greatest honor of 'Seal of Excellence' by the UNESCO authorities.

The sophisticated design, defiant curvature and the immense truthfulness is the asset of these great structures. It maybe affected from the culture and religion of that area, in Carey Island. The Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah mosque, is the state mosque of Selangor, Malaysia and located in Shah Alam. It is the country's largest mosque and also, the seventh largest mosque in Southeast Asia, by capacity. It's most distinguishing feature is it's large blue and silver dome. The mosque has 4 minarets, one erected at each of the corners.

It can hold about 24000 people at one time. The design of the Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah mosque, is the combination of Malay, and modernists styles and elements of Malay and Islamic architecture incorporated into the finishes of the building. It is also called the 'Blue Mosque' for the beautiful blue tone. The dazzle of the Hotel Tenera, Bandar Baru Bangi with their iconic structure is not a mirage.

In this large of oasis meticulously decorated with alluring fabrics and fine furnishing. I am going to share with you all about the customs, traditions and celebrations of Selangor. First, Malay traditions. Marriage traditions of Malay people. Malay weddings are of a grand affair, the most important part of Malay wedding is the '<i>Bersanding</i>', where the couple is seated next to each other on a sofa called the '<i>Pelamin</i>'.

This is a mark of approval and blessing. Loved ones and guests sprinkle the couple with scented water and yellow rice. The guests are given a '<i>Bunga Telur</i>', an ornamented egg festooned with a flower, as a sign of fertility. The ultimate celebration for Malay people is '<i>Hari Raya</i>', '<i>Hari Raya</i>' is one of the most unmistakable celebrations celebrated in Malaysia as well as Selangor, because the majority people in Selangor is Malay. Hari Raya is celebrated during the 9th month of the lunar calendar for a period of one month. Muslims observe daily fasts from dawn to dusk and refrain from consuming foods and wrongdoings.

Hari Raya is celebrated on the last day of Ramadan, it marks the end of fasting period for Muslims. The Chinese wedding ceremony usually consists of two parts – the tea ceremony and the reception. Before the tea ceremony, the groom and his groomsmen make their way to the bride's house. Upon arrival, the groom is not allowed in by the bridesmaids until his groomsmen perform some stunts or tricks while giving out traditional red packets of money (<i>angpow</i>) to the bridesmaids as a form of "payment" for the groom to get to the bride. Once the bridesmaids are happy with the payments, they will allow the groom into the bride's room. The climax of the wedding ceremony is the big dinner held either at home, in a hall or in a restaurant.

Guests bring '<i>angpow</i>' as gifts to the newlywed couple. At the same time, the couple can get to know each partner's family members. As a wedding proof, the couple sign two wedding documents called '<i>Keat Foon Ching Su</i>' in front of several guests. Third, Indian tradition. For the marriage tradition of Indian people, there are consists of three important ceremonies. First, '<i>Kanyadaa</i>' which is giving away of the bride.

Second, '<i>Panigrahana</i>', a sacred fire ritual where the groom takes the hand of the bride as the sign of their union. Third is '<i>Saptapadi</i>'. The most important ritual called the seven-step ritual, where each step corresponds to a vow the groom makes to the bride, and a vow the bride makes to the groom. After '<i>Saptapadi</i>', the couple officially becomes husband and wife in accordance with Hindu tradition. The celebration of Indian people that is very famous in Selangor is '<i>Thaipusam </i>', because '<i>Thaipusam</i>' is one of the best times to visit Batu Caves.

'<i>Thaipusam</i>' takes place between January and February, with thousands of devotees attending each year. The event is not restricted solely to Indian people, but you will see plenty of tourists merrily snapping pictures. In fact, the warmth and hospitality you encounter here will make you want to never go back. Fourth, Mah Meri traditions.

The marriage ceremony begins with conditioning the couple's teeth, with the purpose of discarding any ill omen, so that all their problems before marriage are not carried forward after marriage. Some say that this ceremony is to prove that the couple have reached adulthood and are able to carry their own responsibilities. A day before the sitting on the '<i>dias</i>' ceremony, the couple is required to undergo the henna ceremony that lasts until the morning, intermittent with dance events. The couple fingers are painted red with finely pounded henna leaves. The newlywed couple attire is mediocre, and most are according to their own traditional costume.

They are adorned with various hand-made accessories like bracelets and necklaces made of colorful beads. The headgear is made of tree leaves. The marriage ceremony ends with the couple is bathed to signify that they are safely married.

Only then the couple is confirmed as husband and wife. Kuala Selangor beach is better known as Mirror Of The Sky as the shallow water of this "secret island" reflects the sky in all its glory, creating many photo opportunities. The island makes a perfect holiday destination and is also a habitat for many marine life, the most common are sea and baby clams. Sunway Lagoon is a theme park located at Bandar Sunway, Subang Jaya, Selangor.

It is only 30 minutes away from Kuala Lumpur City Center (KLCC) and Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). The park began its operation in 1992, and was officiated by the then Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tun Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamad on 29th April 1993. Since its opening, the theme park has added Malaysia's first surf simulator, the FlowRider in 2010, Malaysia's first 5D Waterplexx in 2012. and a very large water ride, Vuvuzela in 2013. So first, '<i>Nasi Ambeng</i>' is a Javanese traditional cuisine, which is sharing platter, like a '<i>Nasi Campur</i>'. But the difference between '<i>Nasi Ambeng</i>' and '<i>Nasi Campur</i>' is the steamed rice of '<i>Nasi Ambeng</i>' surrounded by its side dishes. The side dishes of '<i>Nasi Ambeng</i>' are sliced coconut floss, '<i>sambal goreng</i>' chicken with soy sauce and fried noodles.

So, let's see how my mom cooks '<i>Nasi Ambeng</i>' First dish, my mom will cook chicken with soy sauce. After chicken with soy sauce, we're going to see how my mom cooks '<i>sambal goreng</i>'. We move to fried noodle! Last side dish that my mom will do is sliced coconut floss. Yeayy!! We had done preparing the '<i>Nasi Ambeng</i>'. The platter typically holds enough food for 4-6 people. '<i>Nasi Ambeng</i>' originated as a commonal dish for celebrations.

So the question is what is Mah Meri. Basically Mah Meri has their own meaning. 'Mah' is the people and 'Meri' is the jungle. Mah Meri is one of the 18 tribes of Orang Asli living in Malaysia. And most of them resides in Carey Island, Selangor.

One of the most well known dance of Mah Meri people is a Mask Dance called '<i>Mayin Jo-oh</i>', a traditional dance performance. They will perform the dance whenever they have any ceremony, be it a wedding, a festival showcase or something similar. As you can see in the dance, the performers wears a mask and performed its movements and gestures to relate to everyday event.

The mask in the Mah Meri dance depicts the spirit of birds and other animals that inhibits the Mah Meri's surrounding, such as the swamp and the sea. Women dancers wears skirts of '<i>Nipah</i>' leaves and '<i>Nipah</i>' headdress. Also you can see there, the female performs their dances anti-clockwise around the earth mount called '<i>busot</i>' while the male mask dancers perform clockwise around the women. The dance is performed accompanied by the music from '<i>tuntog</i>', '<i>jule</i>', '<i>tambo</i>' and '<i>tawa</i>'.
