I go on lots of people moving through wow look at the beak on that thing wow look at this this looks like a lobster tail it's huge what is that is it alcohol okay I will try wow wow boom boom boom boom the main event crab Curry I think that's the best crab I've ever had the Melting Pot of Asia hello everybody good morning this is Doug and I'm here in Sri Lanka I am in the city of nagombo we are going to go on a massive Sri Lankan food Adventure today and I'm doing it with two very very special people let me introduce them everybody this is Rosanna from the minority taste welcome Blanca so glad that you're here thank you so glad we could uh meet up exactly Rosanna is pretty much the authority on all Sri Lankan Cuisine if you've watched any videos from Sri Lanka you've probably seen her she's the expert thank you thank you are you ready to eat I am so ready I'm very hungry and we've got a full day of food from what I hear exactly if you come with me it's like eat it and by the way I will put all of rosanna's YouTube channel Instagram social media down below so check it out she makes amazing content about Sri Lanka all right guys and also joining us is world renowned Chef Mr Jimmy Shu here he is so nice to meet you sir no sir and I'm not worried out I'm just your humble dishwasher he's being humble but he actually is world renowned runs many restaurants in Australia based in Darwin correct yes but I've only got just two at the moment okay also a TV star in Australia can you tell us a little bit about your show two years ago I was invited to host a show called Facebook I've never done anything like that before so I treat myself in because I love challenges I love digging holes and it worked so now it's at history and I'm here now hoping to do something for my birthday I was born here I look Chinese because my mom and dad are from China but I was born 73 years ago 1949. I grew up in a restaurant environment because that has a business called the rest of the 13 years so as a little kid I followed into places like here so when I come here it brings back value memories and I feel very very comfortable to information so Sri Lanka is is suffering in a way now all these difficult times so I thought I'd come and highlight and feature the food stories of Sri Lanka standby so I'm in very very good company this morning guys and right now we're at a giant fish market here in the gumbo so let's go take a look we're gonna go around the market and then we're gonna start eating yeah all right lots of people moving through a lot of boxes a lot of wholesale going on oh my goodness and all of this is quite local yeah everything really crazy and we are right on the water you guys can see it right out there this is we call it like a banana prawn in Australia it is a very sweeter prawn beautiful flesh not hard and the skin is very thin this is the best one to clean it wow so much fish I won and here we've got the famous crabs guys they just tied up with a little rubber bands so you don't get pinched what is this is this squid calamari wow that is a big squid and this is a weird fish okay thank you wow look at the beak on that thing man yeah yes it's a small man yes are you guys the fisherman are you so you're just selling you only sell okay okay look at this here we've got some stingrays or Skates of some kind back here we've got all the fish being chopped up thank you stingray oh my gosh a whole cooler full of them thanks and the birds are trying to steal some fish this guy's going for it okay so there's a lot Happening Here foreign let's Circle back oh my gosh it's just so oh my God I almost slipped on fish guts bye-bye thanks yeah and uh local like pastries so that is just the breakfast before breakfast okay so this is like mainly set up for the guys working in the market okay very cool so that is why it's always clean and running you know because although it's like small shops it's constantly running because look at the crowd here yeah yeah yeah quick turnover so this is quite okay right right it's like a nigambo style pizza is rice and coconut cooked together got it okay so these kind of sweets okay these are very very nigambo style so this is although it's like a donut comes from the south but these are the nikamba style so it's like it's more spicier and also we eat a lot of pastry because we were colonized by the Dutch yep okay one of the upsides yeah you get the pastries it is a total Melting Pot it's amazing how coconut is used in so many different ways here I've only ever thought of it as sweet and then I came here and had it Savory and like the sambal and all that it's amazing this is called Chinese okay Chinese yeah generationally this is called Chinese one we don't know why okay but I don't know how that cut the Chinese do you like your tea with milk or plain tea uh with milk please thank you for saying wow so the Chinese Roll Chinese roll so what is inside these so usually it comes with fish okay Chinese roller sometimes they make it like vegetarian but fish is the way to go thank you it's oily fatty full of fish and potato like the sound of that okay here we go first bite of the day yes cheers mmm oh wow spicy the first thing I tasted was the sweetness of the coconut and then immediately the spice there's a good kick in there for sure oh I got the sweetness of the coconut first and then it was like boom coconut comes with the Panthers coconut milk palette but as you can see that so is that right off the boats huh yeah right off the boat okay so look at that service on both sides of the of the shop here so what is this so this is the Chinese roll version but it's called the egg roll this I think was borrowed from India which is like a samosa sure yeah so they have it done their version that's another beautiful thing about Sri Lanka there's so many influencers right it's amazing Welcome to The Melting Pot of Asia so in here you've got hard-boiled egg and I think some potatoes and vegetables and a nice spicy curry deep fried it's absolutely delicious and the perfect thing to go with these pastries tea tea not chai exactly this is Kirito because it's milk tea sweet a little bit spicy and creamy delicious [Music] all right guys we've moved on from the fish market now and we've come to a small restaurant here just off the street places in close to the fish market where they sell like this whole breakfast concert stand at breakfast string Hoppers roast Club coconut Circle and the specialty here is the kirima they have to bring the kitty Malu out of a macro because mackerel is a high demand it's more expensive fish in the market we had used something cheaper wow look at that it's no longer white yeah it's supposed to be more yellowy than this but this is like the spicy version and there's Dal oh my goodness they still observe 5G look at this water here yeah sterilizing it okay so they give you the hot water on the plate just to be sure that's nice thank you very much wow look at this macro to Snapper yeah there's millions of eating the sea interesting easy to catch easy to catch but also it's the affordability right I want to do it at 40 minutes yeah because current situation yeah and look at this this is the really thick oh my God it's so heavy the thick puffy bread wow yeah this is this is called The Rose farm right roasta roast oh roast pan okay this is considered like a French baguette everywhere you go you will get this bread and it's enjoy because you can pop up and soak up all the curries right this is traditional every meal they will have this is made out of spring shavings of coconut oh thank you and we've got some string Hoppers which are like little noodle pancakes almost yeah here we go see about this fish and now the move here is to use your fingers and get a little bit of everything yes all righty is this a meal that like the fishermen are eating yeah they're coming to places like this as you can see the the crowd is very very easy yeah I mean there's not much of tourists at the moment but then it's a very very busy Community they're always like doing work here because of the fishing industry obviously so this is like a usual breakfast offers beautiful beaches and hotels as well and also you can get all the seafood you want fresh and it's less tourist so there's more authenticity down south is beautiful sure absolutely amazing I love the South but this place deserves to be visited as well yeah so that's the biggest problem with coming to Sri Lanka I think is you think when you come here oh it's a pretty small island it'll be easy to cover there's way too much to see and do I'm already I already have a whole plan for my second trip this whole trip has been just a small taste of what Sri Lanka has to offer so we'll have to come back so guys now it's actually time for a small break let's see this is how you know rosanna's experience because she knows that we need to take a break right now so we can keep going all day I want you to enjoy the rest of the food so let's take a small tour we are here at Club Ceylon here's the menu and we have the great privilege of being here with the chef of the restaurant Chef Elizabeth all the way from the UK but you're half Sri Lankan half British correct amazing and so how long have you been back here living in Sri Lanka that came out for about three years but it didn't stop us we got we got this beautiful house that was a bit little bit derelict and we did it up she was built in she was built in 1904 and she's an old lady but we love her a lot um we're situated in four minutes from where the boats dock where they bring in all the fresh fish and all the fresh prawns and we set up a little seafood restaurant everything's very fresh and just very simply cooked yeah I love that that's like immediate first impression the menu is just clean and fresh and simple and I'm so excited and we have three dishes here that where it just came out and they look absolutely amazing the prawns are huge smells amazing and we've got Ceviche and clams oh my gosh that is so amazing wow all right guys this is incredible and it's time to try the jumbo prawns look at this this looks like a lobster tail it's huge oh my God I think that's like the biggest shrimp tail I've ever eaten feels like this is the way shrimp was meant to be eaten sober great to meet you thank you so much I hope to be back very soon yeah we are off guys thank you bye-bye all right guys we are off to the next stop so where are we headed gelato Divino so because known for the Italian Sri Lankan Community there's a huge percentage of people from nigambo who has family in Italy interesting yeah and like that is why you'll see a lot of Catholic as well so are they like mixed families like Italian yes [Music] you know you know in their families platform yeah and there are people who lived immediately for 12 years and then they come back to Sri Lanka and they start up something like okay a lot of Italian Sri Lankan drinking flavors but yeah it's called little room in nigamo little room yeah amazing Little Italy in negombo guys I bet you didn't know that existed alrighty guys we are here at gelato Divino it's homegrown homegrown yeah so the owner Italy and they're making it right here he's been in and then he started his little gelato company pistachio chocolate strawberry cappuccino Fior de latte panna cotta KitKat yogurt oh my goodness thank you I've got cappuccino and Fior de latte here guys very excited oh you're the owner okay nice to meet you Italy for 20 years where in Italy were you living Naples okay very nice I think the weather is perfect but it is getting hot out there and what better way to uh take a little midday break than with some Italian gelato right here in Sri Lanka we're gonna finish this up but don't go anywhere because we have a lot more to show you from here in nagambo including crabs and other stuff other stuff all right guys we have arrived now in the area of nagombo where they are growing Lagoon crabs yes so it's a very entrepreneur type business okay so each house is like having a little crab cage where they catch adult crabs and then they cave that found them in that cage and they start feeding them to fatten them up a bit okay so it takes a few days or weeks and that's how they have a living all right so we're heading there right now guys and just take a look at this we're just walking through this nice little neighborhood I really like it here it's so so cute yeah yeah it's like nice Street hello how are you what is that is it alcohol okay I will try thank you never say no to a random plastic container of Home brewed alcohol on the street people [Music] did you make it yourself did he [Music] okay is it like made by a company or Homebrew oh it's home brewed sweet very good thank you okay I'll take one more thank you very good thank you it's delicious yum well I don't know if that coconut alcohol was supposed to be part of the food tour a little impromptu Edition okay so it's like family is hanging out outside their houses it almost reminds me of like Latin America actually okay exactly this is what I'm saying it's very very like Italian sort of yeah Mediterranean exactly Siesta Vibes all right guys so here we are at the Lagoon now so each cage is owned by a different family so our guy enters cages right over at the end okay catch adult crabs and they put them in the cage just to fatten them up because if they don't fatten them up like they can't really they won't get a good price okay so they feed them bread and catfish really yeah huh cool all right so here comes the cage wow that's a big crumb wow okay I gotta get a little closer let's see okay I made it wow that is a big crab what's up guys how are you Hi how are you awesome okay my name what's your name my name is douglas douglas douglas yeah how old are you your age how old are you me 26. 11. 12. 12. okay very good wow so he ties it up
like that and uh look at that can't pinch you anymore you guys like the crabs it's good good yeah yeah yes okay okay um uh America yes very good boom oh geez oh whoa look at look at that look at that guys there's a there's a dead fish in the water it looks like an eel to me I think it's an eel or some kind of weird fish hey look at this one rat look yeah gross okay I hope you're not saying anything bad oh here's another one okay so look at that he holds it with his foot is that it can't move and uh pinch now he's gonna put the band under the front of the crab like that claws out of the way and just like that he's gonna wrap it up wow amazing wow wow wow [Laughter] beautiful yeah oh and there goes the net guys or the cage rather there they go okay thank you all right guys see you bye-bye [Music] boom boom boom boom boom all right see ya all right so now we're gonna weigh the crabs that's the big boy 0.85 kilos to get it cooked okay and we have like a bunch of other stuff that you have to try in the gumbo let's go sounds good hi all right guys we have arrived at the new rest house it's a very old Colonial building here also in nagomba and we're gonna go in and get this crab cooked up and try some other nice things as well so let's go and so at this place you just bring whatever whatever you have and they'll cook it for you they will do that as well but they have that Fresh Catch also okay who knows these guys like Anton here they like they accept him to come and just bring his stuff because they bite from him anyway they have fresh catches the day and they like do really really good Sri Lanka bites now if you notice it's a very big drinking Community like as you walk by you saw like yeah just drinking outside I recall having a couple sips exactly so because of that they have a lot of finger food involved here okay a lot of things like spicy finger food as in like or snacks Okay so we've got here fried uh sear fish here are some garlic fries yes and now this you get only really yeah you get a mix of it okay but this is like kind of the Inception of where you get the garlic fries in Sri Lanka amazing it is very aromatic guys and you can see the whole cloves of roasted garlic in there or fried garlic maybe the next dish has arrived these little fish and what is this called oh you love it oh cool thank you saying this is a very bony fish it's a very bony fish but very popular in this area okay but here it's cheaper and it's fresh crunchy all right mindful of the bones and you eat all of it though right chew it all up okay thank you here we go guys can you see can you see all the bones there anyway here we go I'm born in the middle it's crunchy but it was nice to be honest I'm not noticing them too much I don't know really wow look at the Moon oh yeah I just ate that okay great I really like it it's good okay guys the main event crab Curry look at that big crab he has turned orange now and it smells amazing if you want to have like a really good fresh Lagoon crab legambo is the closest place to Colombo and it's close to the airport as well you don't have to go all the way to the east coast right just come here and it's cheaper wow look at that all right so how do we attack this so I'm gonna give you a claw thank you oh my goodness it's a huge claw wow it's broken down yeah it's nice that they crack it open for you oh thank you so much thank you oh done like a pro it's like a little crab lollipop whoa good oh my God that's amazing really I think that's the best grab I've ever had really yeah there's so much flavor going on it's so soft and juicy and sweet and Sweet slightly sweet taste underneath and also this Curry is the nigambo style Curry okay so in Japanese you get like a robust flavor some Curry but you hardly get the Lagoon crabs there I mean it's very seasonal in the east coast it's in a different way so around the country you get different flavor of crab curries okay so this is unique you have to come to nagambo to get these flavors in this fresh crab oh my goodness that is amazing thank you very much for the help oh wow is it different than the clothes yeah it is sweet I feel like it's even more tender maybe yeah wow [Music] yeah yeah you can see it kind of coming apart it's almost like stringy that is amazing I had no idea this part existed thank you all right guys onward here we go alrighty
