Touring a Haunted Hollywood Landmark: American Legion Post 43

good morning y'all it is 9:00 a.m. and downtown LA I just went and got Starbucks got their new iced energy drink which I had no idea existed but it sounded really good and refreshing so that's what I'm sipping on today melon burst energy we are going to Hollywood right now we're going to this place called the American Legion it's going to be cool I've never been there before I've heard this place is super haunted I don't know much about the history but we're going to find out I'm meeting two complete strangers it it should be fun it should be cool it should be safe I think these people work for the American Legion it's just that I've been keeping in touch with them over Instagram I don't know who they are I trust them I trust them if you're watching this video that means I made it out there alive dude downtown LA is oh oh my God bright light it's so quiet on Sundays it's like actually crazy there's no one around so American Legion Post 43 obviously located in Hollywood it's a club for veterans if if you're a veteran you can join and be a part of their Club but their bar is open to the public so they want me to come and promote their bar and show me around the place which I'm super excited about because I love Egyptian architecture Egyptian style architecture it was built in like 1929 which is crazy it's super old and a lot of Hollywood stars used to be there like Clark Gable Gan ay a lot of famous people and Charlie Chaplain actually used to sit at the bar there we're going to see all of this stuff we're going to get Ghost Stories the freeway is empty this is Los Angeles wow I should do everything on a Sunday honestly this is so nice dude I ate so much Jack in the Box last night stomach is I'm feeling it now Mr CR I had curly fries I had a loaded breakfast sandwich which was so good if you haven't had the Jack in the Box loaded breakfast sandwich you haven't lived but the next day you feel it it's like a hangover but you feel it in your stomach oh speaking of the devil Jack in the Box right there there he is so I just got here and I'm kind of in like a position right now because I'm at the gate and I have to just wait here because if I pull I can't pull backwards it's a busy street so I can't just like blindly pull out maybe I can but apparently this is the parking so I'll just wait here for 30 minutes until they get here it looks so spooky though even just sitting out here in the morning like it looks strange I don't know and it's so tucked away like you could drive by this place and not know it's here it's it's very tucked very old school I'm excited to go in here though the architecture looks cool yeah it looks old as hell and like a cannon outside like an old cannon which is crazy and it's next to a senior living facility hello seniors and the gates like the gates are very detailed wow okay so the guy's here he just let me in I'm in I'm in everybody VIP there's a fat squirrel eating something look at the squirrel he's so cute used to be this like a page in front of it there's a David Bowie video really that uh whoa he didn't even um dress the place he just used it oh my gosh this place does go to the bar do you want to go this yeah let's go to the bar yeah wa this is creepy but it's cool I read online like 1929 right yeah that's when it opened it was built and kind of completed 1928 wow oh my goodness the depression actually they got the money and then the depression happened and they're like what do we do kind of feeling guilty and they said build it there's a couple of photos of what this bar looked like back then and it's really pretty close you don't really see this kind of architecture anymore what is this picture so we have another property it's now a 24 Hour Fitness but it used to be a yeah so it used to be a for wrestling and boxing matches sports arena and so if you look Everybody's In Focus everyone's wearing a hat and a suit and it's actually a Kung Fu smoker it's not a boxing match it's a Fu match wow and everybody's like looking at the camera they probably had to stay perfectly still for is this like the 30s you think 40s yeah 30s or 40s I don't know I can like the hats and stuff Mak sense wow that's a cool picture I love that picture it's a great picture we didn't know that the but for the longest time there's a wood paneling in front of this it was removable but we never even thought to remove it and then we found these posters you found oh my God that's so cool so the pool room is famous guys this is the famous pool room probably in the beginning apparently there was like a a fight that didn't end well really yeah in here somebody got caught cheating oh in the card room yeah which is the next room over are there any ghost stories in here or is it like there's ghost St a feeling there are ghost stories in for every room okay um no a lot of like bartenders closing up and hearing noises walking sinks turning on by themselves by themselves I mean I'll tell you my story if you want to yes I would love to hear your story so this is what what the rooms looked like back in the day yeah crazy I wonder if any of them haunt the place this hallway is even just like spooky just like looking down it you'll be able to get the vibe from this so just from coming in there was a DJ that did a party here went late night talked to the bartender hey can I come in and get my stuff tomorrow during the day they said no problem the door will be open and you can come down he comes down next thing you know they listen to the answering machine message cuz that night the gear was still there and he goes the machine goes dude I don't know what's down there but I am not going to somebody's going to have to go with me to get my gear what did he see we're not sure he came down it was dark came in here and he said there's no way he just left his gear and he just said somebody's going to come with me or I'm going to come there later it's hand blown or you know oh the window oh I see that yeah bubles and stuff that kind of tells you it's old that's old it feels old we had a tree fall on one of our windows and they had to replace it with the equivalent and it was really hard to do because they had to get hand blown windows I guess yeah and that's hard now like you can't find that kind of stuff Spa oh there's the stadium yeah where's the 24-hour Fitness um it's over by you ever been to Davey Wayne's yeah yeah it's over there oh it's over there okay so I love that place is this where he fell I think it was definitely these steps but it might have been there's another set there's another area you could go to but it had to be this right cuz it's where the bar is right or well yeah because what we do is we have a lot of um events we can follow it up okay whoa this is crazy wow oh my God this is beautiful wow also so sometimes oh it echoes musician friends will come up here and use it for their Reverb yeah the Acoustics in here holy crap it's like a it's like a church kind of it is what a cool place so they used to from the front we had a um little box office here and then they have concerts in here so our movie theater used to be a live music venue so like for big bands and then another aspect of the ghosts are Jeff Buckley played here he had one of the his best concerts here and the Cure they did yeah the cures played here I oh my God yeah for that to me this is beautiful is this like a newer kind of setup yeah we refurbished it it's so cool though are amazing right something in here yeah yeah yeah for sure I don't know what yeah you want to go in yeah I'll go in why not wow hello it yeah I don't know strange so we're about to meet up with Dennis the commander of the Legion so it's going to be fun he's going to tell us some stories hopefully some ghost stories wow so Dennis the commander of the Legion we just met up with him and uh he's a commander of post 43 pretty cool he's going to be showing us around maybe telling us some ghost stories we'll see but this place is this place has ghosts there's no doubt in my mind it's everywhere I turn you just feel something but it's so beautiful look at this it's gorgeous German Canon out here and they melted it down for World War II and so now this is a Japanese piece that they found World War II it's so beautiful it's just like I can't get over it I was talking about it earlier opening up the theater now wow whoa whoa I saw pictures of this online but I did not realize how massive it is it's so beautiful oh my goodness wow place is huge look at this look how wow the architecture it's so like quiet has great Acoustics thing where we for you know if you want to donate to a family friend yourself or whatever and um so oh there's Stanley's chair yeah Stanley's chair which is wow he was a member of our post Marilyn row was an honorary Colonel I'll show you her chair she Marilyn has a chair well it's a special chair not in here oh let's go do that and then upstairs and then we'll go to the bar again is that yeah yeah so this is a place where one of the ghost STS have heard from two or three people cleaning up and app like kids running or kid like giggling and stuff and it's always in the Rotunda area up here and so Jerick was the one that told me the last time I heard that and he was like you know what do they cuz he was trying to close up the place he's like why why are people still here who's here and so he takes these boxes and he's like going to his car and he's coming back and he's hearing these kids and then of course he goes up there and there's nobody there there's no children and we haven't had any children ding the building so I don't know yeah that's strange but and then other people have heard it just like they'll be at this end up here and they'll hear kids like playing around here I wonder why they be here I don't know it's weird um I can tell you a story about the theater several of us were tearing up the Dance Floor cuz we before it was a theater and we were having a beer just but doing hard labor and then we were sitting there and I heard we heard three Bells Bo and we were the only ones like we yeah and so of course we're like military guys so we act like we're doing a room clearing and we run as fast we can up to the projection room and we're looking for people like we're joking somebody like like who's pulling a prank there's nothing there and so these bells here that's what was ringing oh my God and so we went up to the projection room and I guess it used to be electronic but the the the electrical cords were separated yeah and they were just sticking out we weren't attached yeah that's say it hasn't worked in years and I know this stuff's disconnected we're trying to figure out how to get it going again so that hasn't worked in years yeah I don't know if the last time I promise you that happened just exactly I believe you one of the ghost stories is that a bartender fell down one of these stairs and hit his head just trying to figure out which stair it was I have a feeling we were talking about the bartender falling down the stairs that story is that a true story yeah um was it there I think it would have been in it might oh you don't know yeah it's crazy sad you know you're right you're totally right you're totally right I wasn't thinking cuz yeah cuz he lived up here so yeah he was running downstairs to play cars I just I sometimes could be said stuff and I felt it like right at those two steps going down that's yeah you're right you're toally right I don't know what I said that oh man cuz yeah he would have been I heard it was late at night or whatever was coming out of this cuz he lived here and running down guys they're showing me Marilyn's chair of when she used to come here and watch shows and it's right here that's her chair Marilyn you're still remembered by us that's so cool gosh you have so much stuff people you know unfortunately when the husbands die there's a lot of women in Ser but when the husbands die these really old guys a lot of times they don't want the stuff in the house so they just they bring it yeah just here's a box I in my house tag you're it you know we got to go through it and figure out it's so cool though you have well that's it cuz everything is historical everything's important to somebody everything's some something that you know somebody put some value on it and for us just to we don't care about that you know so Shirley Temple she came here and there's Marilyn so this is we own another building um and they wanted to sell it and that's one of the things as Commander I was able to fight but this Hollywood Legion stadium and this is right over on Al Centro about a mile from here and uh look how cool that is now now it's a fitness place yeah he was telling me yeah and it's like you know they had a whole plan to sell this thing oh and this is cool look at this did he tell you that about the no I forgot this part yeah what do you know cuz I think the guy who shot Ked over there yeah that I think it was a poker game and somebody was cheating yeah so the guy that was the owner of that look it up but the guy that was the owner of that I don't know was of the dog yeah that's from Rascal so he was in a poker game here and this was back this was um I don't know 2 3 4 in the morning but this guy this member and him kept on getting an argument over the card game I guess and then like cheating yeah thought that he was cheating this and that and then the guy I don't know he went to hit him or something and the other guy pulled a gun and killed him and he died um Happ I'll show you where it's at it's over they think over there but what's interesting about that is um that this was being used as a housing place for for soldiers to temporarily stay when they were in LA and so they said one of the articles I read said that they had like 200 people sleeping right upstairs and none of them heard the gunshots and I was like oh my God that shows you how well insulated and the cement and everything is here in the building so like this was the area yeah this area area a little bit over here was where they were doing playing poker at is there a ghost story about the bathroom here have you heard anything about this women's restroom yeah I don't know where the things turn on and off I don't know I just feel it there's something here but I don't know who I remember what it is but please take a look and yeah oh I did I thought it was scary oh you already went in here yeah I came in it smells very good though it smells delicious in here what is this picture I've never seen this picture in here what is it are these the Ladi like of war the nurses the light see I think this is something somebody people just put random stuff here this a very clean and nice bathroom yeah whoa wow so what was this back in the day it was Cabaret jazz dances this is this is where we have our big band perform big band alni this is where we do meet meetings so tomorrow we'll have in here probably around 80 people this is where we do the commander ball oh cool you know we do our New Year's Eve event and it was so we redone and pulled it all up and uh you know we ran it out a lot for a lot of different things this is cool was The Cure in here no they were in the uh in the theater yeah makes sense it's very Gothic looking kind of I mean it was like it is now but it just more Stony more like a church look at this Mallet this is a massive this is massive huge heavy now we're in this random room and Dennis is going to show me where he saw a ghost all right let's go down here is it going to be dark we'll light it up I got a I got a phone Bo light all right who hello anybody here hello making sure so what is this so this is our Boiler Room that when we redid the building this is where they had the electrical the boiler the hot water heater everything ties back to this utility part of the building and so I was in here and there's a um let me show you where it's at but right down here is an entrance an entrance to what to hell that's a place I was talking about where people thought this is a tunnel that goes out to Hollywood Boulevard right but it just goes other parts of the building so anyways I was down here working I used to volunteer a lot come up here during the week and I came in here and there was a black guy and he's just sitting here in a chair and he's in a full tuxedo we have different events we have different people here we have different thing you know there's always stuff in the building and so I just thought oh maybe he's there for some kind of shoot or maybe to get head shot maybe he an actor or something you know maybe and so I was working over there and I could see him I just kind of came in and kind of acknowledged him and then I started doing stuff and I was trying to run network cables and then I'm like kind of I started thinking what is that guy doing here and I kind of and why is he sitting over there yeah and I could like and then I looked up and there wasn't anything there and then I looked down again and I could see the image of him out of the you know top part of my eye and I was like if he disappears again I'm out of here and I look up and then it's gone and I'm like you know then the Goosebumps and all that I'm like and I'm not scared or anything but I'm like okay I think I'm going to go home you no I'd be like all right I'm clocking out clocking out I'm done for the day that's weird so I so like I said I didn't get a scared feeling but I was like why did I see this guy when I first walked in kind of acknowledged him then why did he disappear the two times I looked at him why is he in a cheedo and it's rare because they usually disappear like the one time you look but it was twice like he was there I looked down right I just kind of I wonder I wonder who he was no idea and I and I look through cuz we have a ton of photographs I look through all the photographs thinking maybe he's you know what I mean somehow tied and I you know maybe I haven't seen a photograph yet but I can't find that connection you saw like a like an apparition of a person is that he was wearing white right he had a full tuxedo on no that's crazy so that's so rare too you you you usually just see a shadow but he like showed himself to you for some reason yeah so I don't know like I said it look kind of to me it was like Lou Armstrong kind of I wonder who that is no idea so that's crazy have you heard that story what's that one the the man in the tux that he saw in this tunnel no I didn't he just told me this crazy story made it up right on the spot man in that Cabaret room and I heard people talking upstairs and I'd already cleared the whole building nobody's here the gates closed everything's closed and I hear people talking but there's members with numbers to get in this place and we're guys it's late at night I don't know if M's like coming and like joking right that's true maybe so I go running upstairs to see who it is there's nobody there so I think okay maybe I heard sounds coming all the way from the street because late at night this place is a big Echo okay you can hear stuff from the street in the cavaret room so I don't see anything but it was definitely like people talking and Whispering so I just go okay everything's fine I close up I go out to this Alleyway here look at the conference room lights are on oh now now they're really messing with me because they're walking around in there doing stuff after I left so I go back in I come in turn off the lights in the conference room I come out of the conference room lights are on in the trophy room so I go over there I turn those lights off sand there for a couple minutes no sand go down the front door close it nothing for 10 minutes I'm waiting cuz I'm thinking I want to catch him like whoever's messing with me yeah and uh nothing this the whole night was gone and then I've come out of the bathroom before and John's told me this like every once in a while somebody will come out of the men's restroom and they'll he somebody Y and there's nobody there this place is so haunted but in like a very special way and he got real with me the commander at the end and told me this crazy story about how when he goes to the bathroom he uses the same sink same areas he feels like somebody is pushing him to um go to those areas every single time and if someone's using that sink he waits for that sink things like that and so then we go upstairs and he tells me the story of whenever I have to make a big decision whatever it is if I have to make a hard decision or something on behalf of the group I will go to this certain area of this table and he walks me into the conference room and he's I literally sit here every time there's somebody telling me that I need to sit there and I thought that was interesting since he's a commander there's been so many commanders in this place over the years maybe there's somebody that's guiding him here watching over him here because he also in the beginning he showed me this coin and he told me he went on a ghost tour once and he said that the devices during the ghost tour were saying coin coin coin some sort of you know coin and he didn't want to say anything or give any attention to himself during the ghost tour but he had a feeling it was about his coin and so I found that really interesting and there must be some sort of like physical thing and energy about having that coin in your pocket being that kind of commander in this facility there's a lot of spirits here but they're all nice and actually we're going to be going back and doing an
