This mega city is the soul of Turkey and NOT what I expected! S8, EP08
But then I met Duygu Hello! Konya - Turkey Season 8 - Eps.8 Good morning Internet, it is a 9:00 in the morning and welcome back to the channel Welcome here in Konya in Turkey Let me take this street Today I'm going to do some local exploring in and around Konya So I will take Frankie later but the first thing, the most important thing I want to see is actually on walking distance So I'm just going to walk there and then I don't have to wear mymotorcycle gear either So Konya is the sixth largest city of Turkey, there's more than 2 million people living here And it's also one of the most conservative cities of Turkey They say if you come to Konya, you come to Turkey's soul Hi What's wrong? And the place that I'm walking to now, is the Mausoleum of Rumi One of the world's most read poets. And Rumi was born in modern day Afghanistan to Persian parents He wrote most of his poems and writings in Farsi But he lived most of his life here in Turkey and he passed away in 1273 here in Konya So that means that both Afghanistan and Iran and Turkey, all claim Rumi as their own But here in Turkey, Rumi is known as Mevlana which means the sainted one So he was a mystic, a sufi saint who loved all religions He preached inclusivity, tolerance, love and respect for all despite of their religions And that's something I think we need very much today as well Rumi was so loved that when he died the people in Konya mourned him for 40 days And then they built a masoleum over his grave where he was buried right next to his father Rumi's tomb Wow, that was a that was a really interesting experience It was a enormous tomb, I didn't think it would be so big and just beautifully decorated And it's also a museum, so there were all sorts of artifacts and very, very interesting place And so Rumi expressed his love for humanity in his poems and in his writings But he expressed his love for the divine in a sort of trans like dancing Whirling and people say that he first did this dance when he was walking past the bazaar where the people were beating gold.. to shape it, I suppose and he became really entranced
By the sound of the rhythmic hammering and the gentle humming of Allah's name That he raised his hands up to the sky and started whirling started turning around and they say that that's how he reached oneness with his God And so this rhythmic dancing this whirling is still being done And this is the best place to see it They built a huge center where they have I think, every week Once or even twice performances and of course I gonna see one See, behind me you see the masoleum With a blue tiled dome It's really spectacular right? It's all so beautiful here. I don't know what the meaning is of this Shame is, I can't read Turkish or I have no idea what it all means But like what is this building then? No idea I have no idea what I just walked into, if this is also a museum or... Nobody here There it is That's where it all happens So I was planning to go and see the Whirling Dervishes tonight But then I met Duygu - Hello So in the guest house where I am staying we met each other Because I wanted to learn a little bit more about Sufism And she has lived, Duygu has lived in the Netherlands for? I was born and raised in Holland - Yeah So Six years um, I've been traveling with my husband But yeah for the last 30 years, I was living in Holland And studying there but now I live uh, in uh Conya In Konya! - Partly And a little bit in Morocco, so yes So she's been my.. my translator and we've been speaking Dutch and English and Turkish And her husband is actually Moroccan and he's a Moroccan biker as well He rides motorbikes - Oh well he's coming Oh there he is, yeah Hello Hey Noraly Nice to meet you - Nice to meet you too That's a pleasant surprise! Eerste keer..? - Yes, so random! Yes, first time here Are we gonna take the metro or not? Well.. let's see, there a metro going too I suppose
You already went inside I assume? - Yes of course, yes, yes No a little bit further.. yes, nearly Yes, the parking is here Do you have to.. how to you say 'stop'? - 'Müsait' We're sitting on that side, at front Nice The ceremony starts with prayer. There are 32 dervishes attending in this ceremony Taking off the black robe symbolizes letting go of the ego and worldly life The white robes symbolize purity They spin with increasing speed and precision; not just around themselves , but around the entire room This represents the movements of the universe and the rotational movements of the planets around the Sun They try keep their eyes closed most of the time to not get distracted Okay Let's go for a little ride.. around town See you Okay So there's a couple of things I have to do, and a couple of things I want to do I'm passing the mosque again here is Rumi's masoleum But um.. I'm going to do a little ride First of all I need to top up my internet I already burned through 20 gigas Goes so fast when you're doing like YouTube videos and stuff So I need to buy some more data 'cause Wi-Fi isn't so great everywhere And then I'm just going to have a little ride around Konya And I want to visit a small town just outside Konya, like 10 kms outside of the city And I thought maybe have a lunch there Sounded like a good idea to me And on the way just yeah, have a little look around town I think it'll be nice The vodaphone shop is just down in this street So I'll just pop over there quickly see if I can buy some some data All these people Crossing the road! Dangerous Yeah, there's going to be plenty of mosques here in Konya Here's a tram It's brand new Okay somewhere here should be a vodaphone shop Ah, there vodaphone Oh, it's empty Okay find another one It's red The guy ran a red light Women on motorbikes! I love it Go in here Anyone see a vodaphone shop, shout It does say 'internet' but..
Turk Telecom.. Turk cell A lot of phone shops but not I don't know if the other ones also sell vodaphone Not sure Wow, there's no doubt about in which country I am A massive flag Vodaphone! Although they look closed as well What's up with vodaphone? Phone shops are closed I don't know why Yay. Finally found one Woohoo I'm now going to go to the little place I was planning to which is called Sille And it's probably there somewhere around that hill I think Wow look at this Wow, this is really beautiful Oh this is a perfect place to eat something I'd say Look how nice Nice Let's put uh.. let's park Frankie somewhere Here might be a good spot Wow, I immediately got all these nice things already I didn't even order that And I have a little cat sleeping across the table from me Cool place right? What's your name? Ooh, thank you So I ordered a Sille kebab, the local kebab from here And then some salad and well, I already got all these sides That is delicious Okay that was.. very nice Very nice lunch, nice place Here we go All right time to head back to Konya I'm gonna take a different route back though Kind of through the hills around here a little bit Getting a little bit lost in this village It's all twisty How do I get out of here? Left here Street is.. up here
Yeah this way This way Oh this is quite another dramatic kind of entrance to Konya, right? And here you can also see how massive this city is And you can also see a little bit that it's just on the Anatolian plains Which also means I'm gonna have to cross those Anatolian plains At some point See, ha ha ha Wow, what a view It reaches all the way until this one mountain in the distance there And down there it's all flat Right home sweet home Peace be upon you So that was it for today. I really enjoyed my stay here in Konya As you probably know, normally I'm not really one for big cities And this is definitely a big city But somehow it didn't really feel so big when I was here And it was just I don't know the people were super friendly And I found it of course really fascinating to see Rumi's masoleum and to learn a bit more about Sufism And of course, I really enjoyed seeing the Whirling Dervishes. Now of course this was a performance They also do this like in small religious gatherings but this is really to see kind of what it's all about um, so I really enjoyed it And yeah, meeting Duygu and her husband of course So yeah, it was just really amazing, really enjoyed it here But it is time to move on, so in the next video I am leaving Konya and moving on So that was it for today. I really hope you like this video If you did please give a big thumbs up, subscribe down below and then I will see you in the next video
