The Honda Cub C90 | From Pizza Delivery Bike to a Classic in 20 Years

After World War II Japanese industry was on its  knees and a lot of powers that be within industry   they were lobbying the government to put big  tariffs on Foreign imports in order to try and   improve Japan's industrial standing however  there was one dissenting voice and that was   sachiro Honda he argued that if you take away the  competition Japanese industry will stagnate and in   order to build a good economy or rebuild a good  industrial economy you must have the competition   and he was proved absolutely right because a  few years later a world beta was born in 1958   the first Honda Cubs came off the production line  up until this time motorcycles forms of motorized   two-wheel transport were seen as something very  much for the men and people who liked oily rags   and getting their hands dirty sachiro Honda  aimed to build a motorcycle up for the people   and in order to build a motorbike for the  people it had to appeal to its wide a range   of different people as possible it had to be  unintimidating and light to ride so not just   the physical lightness of the bike but also to  appeal to Japanese Riders so it had to be able   to appeal to someone who was five foot tall and  able to put your feet comfortably on the ground   it had to be able to appeal to an eight-year-old  with a low weight that's unintimidating and it had   to be able to appeal to a 16 year old who had no  experience riding at all now engine wise sachiro   Honda needed two things he needed it to be at  least four horsepower and he didn't want it to   be a two-strike it had to be a four-stroke engine  because he hated the whining high-pitched sound   of the two-stroke engines that he found whizzing  around the streets of Europe apart from that it   had to be at a good price point because this is  Japan after World War II when the economy was   relatively speaking on its knees so this had to  be just as appealing to someone coming from manual   labor as it was to an office worker as it was to  a housewife of the time it had to be something   that everyone could get their heads around and  everyone could dream of owning and one final thing   it had to be a genuine mode of Transport for  the sober Riders because these were riders   that in the 1950s 1955 we'll be riding  around on a bicycle with often five foot   high balls stacked up on the left shoulder  of bowls of noodles so they'd be cycling   around dropping these off and in order  for this bike to be a tool for the job   Honda had to be able to free up the left-hand side  of the body of these delivery Riders so he created semi-automatic three-speed gearbox it's very  simple it's down four going up a gear and it's   the back heel for going down again and that means  that there's no lever here at all so your hand is   completely freed up you can be holding your five  foot high tower of noodles while riding around in   complete ease and that's the key to this bike ease  of use get that right and this can appeal to the   widest possible audience right full walk around  this exact model is a 1998 C90 cab that means   it's got the 85 cc engine that's eight horses  and it's 82 kilos dry weight 88 kilos wet weight   full walk around so many classic design features  on this let's start with the front because that on   the front Are drum brakes you do not get disc  brakes with that then move on to the front of   the bike it's got just this iconic plastic  fairing that covers a decent amount of your   legs on the front that beautiful headlamp this  is all plastic here with two nice Chrome mirrors   so easy to maneuver marker I'll move  it like that so you can see what I see   here oh it is here is everything that I see but  the first thing I noticed when I picked this up   yesterday is these in metal the switch gear in  metal that's just stunning Honda quality you   don't even get that on Modern triumphs and Harley  Davidsons lovely switch gear milometer in there   and here's something else you don't get on Modern  bikes either for some unknown reason a fuel gauge   a fuel gauge on a 26 or so year old bike you'll  notice there the maximum speed says 50 believe   me it is not easy getting to 50. right I'll jump  off oh before I do Monarch a few just zoom into   this here because this has a few warnings here  for example never operates when tired or after   consuming drugs or drink unless you are so  hungover high or pissed that you can't read   this so it's good that they've given all of the  warnings just to make sure you're safe on the   bike the seat itself it was designed to be all  day sofa levels of comfort this comes with the   passenger seat on the back it's got the beautiful  spokes wheels it has of course the three-speed   semi-automatic clutch fuel tank is under the seat  that is to keep the weight distribution low to   make it unintimidating for Riders and of course  they can step through the engine itself which is I'm going to embarrass myself  there's the engine now this   this was made to be able to run on incredibly  incredibly low quality fuel so it was as rugged   and as tough as they come service interviews  intervals they recommend you change the oil once   every thousand miles or so now that may sound  intimidating until you learn that there's no   oil filter and it only requires one pint of oil  per oil change so it is as simple as you like   starting now it's meant to be so easy to start and  run that anyone can do it without any issue at all   and there is a system for this and it is not  as easy as modern motorcycles and I'll be   completely honest when I went to pick this bike  up from Ian yesterday he gave me the keys he   said right Freddie go and enjoy yourself I'll  see you tomorrow and I said great thanks Ian turned on the key and I an there's no starter button and I'd even  forgot the word of starter button Ian there's no   how do I start it and it's like oh slightly  different here Freddie he said don't worry   completely easy there is a fuel tap there that you  turn down to the on position there's a choke here   that you just open up a little bit ignition on  in neutral and then you just kick start it very   easy I tried Kickstart kickstarting it for  three minutes with Ian awkwardly watching me   couldn't do it you said Freddie Freddie just stop  you're gonna flood the engine argue he started it   first time so I embarrassed myself I don't like  being put on the spot watch this kickstand out so easy there we go just first time that's the  beauty of these they're designed   for everyone very easy and then  you can head off on your day that's it there we go away okay okay foreign if you can't start it the the best thing because  they're so light you can actually push at home right all right what do you do when you can't  Kickstart a bike I have no idea I have no idea   call the AAA I have to call the AAA God this is  pathetic hmm okay thanks for watching yeah thank   you everyone so much lovely lovely bike and  I'm I hope you learned a few things about the   the iconic under Cub it is beautiful though  but thank you so much everyone for watching   uh please do give the video a like subscribe  to the channel and we'll see in the next one oh my God I was so scared there that was five  minutes Oh I thought I was gonna have to call I thought I was gonna have to call Ian  and saying I'm sorry the bike's broken   down five miles away ah see this is why these  bikes are so good they're designed to be the   every man the every woman's bike you don't  need to know how to ride a bike kickstart's   so easy that even the most inexperienced  person can use it and look my my left hand   is free I click down I'll just show you  there I feel like I've won the lottery   click down that's in first gear  but you still don't go anywhere okay right let's head off and do  a full test review of this bike a little different than all the  rest are quite a fashion where I   had sometimes played chess and when I'm  out I'm looking for that vintage fling photo complexions that I adore so hard to  finally seem impossible to score so I a dreamer the Honda cab broke boundaries with regards to  the ergonomics and the ease of use but the key   here is how do you take a motorcycle that's been  designed for Mass Market appeal Mass Market use   easy to ride for everyone how do you take that  product and then launch it to the world well of   course marketing is key and Honda came up with a  slogan you meet the nicest people on a Honda and   what this did is it moved Honda away from just  appealing to the traditional bikers and opening   it up to a wider audience people who may have  never considered riding a motorbike previously   and after that what Honda is is they started using  ladies in the marketing campaigns and that further   pushed on the image of the Honda Cub it's a  real genuine mode of Transport for the masses okay I'm going to take you along now for a ride  review Monica may have cut that that was about 32   attempts it kick starting it it's not first thing  I can say and it cuts out it's not a relaxing   ride I don't want to lie to you please don't die  please don't die Monica please keep revs keep revs okay Monica as soon as you as soon as I get  this going you jump on we gotta ride okay right now bear in mind this  is this is two people now on   the bike so performance will be more sluggish we're doing 18 miles an hour and  that feels quite like the maximum okay indicator there slowing  down praying praying that it   doesn't fall onto the main road right  here we go we're in second gear now and in the it's a third that's 20 miles an hour 20 25. we're close to 30 miles an hour it feels like we're doing about  50 but that is oh that's 28. okay now I break down and in some  second gear neutral now back into first   please don't stall do not install accelerator and that's  something first down for seconds it did get to 35 miles an hour  earlier which is quite impressive well there is no surge in power anywhere on  this bike forget it doesn't matter if it's   one person or two people Nothing maximum  speed one person on a dual carriageway   52 miles an hour and maximum speed 30 cents an hour handling poor brakes not great   for Good Vibes off the scale but the  engine all right the engine feels huh as long as it doesn't stall  but that is a solid an engine oh it takes a bit of getting used to  it took me a good probably half an   hour to actually get used to the  fuel tap clicking down into here starting which I still haven't  mastered it shouldn't be soft   but whether you're off-roading or  going over potted roads very forgiving and here here in the city even with is where it comes alive and This  Is Where It Feels by far most at   home it's incredibly light incredibly  Nimble the Turning circle is excellent   really is heard superb mode of City Transport  and I cannot wait the ridiculous look on my face   it's a constant smile I must look like there's  something wrong with me with people going past thank you in 2017 the production numbers of the  Honda Cubs passed the 100 million Mark meaning   it is the most produced vehicle in the history of  Motor Vehicles and sometimes Perfection doesn't   need that much perfecting because if we look at  this model compared to the brand new 2020 model   extremely similar 88 kilos on this one compared  to 109 kilos on the brand new one eight horsepower   and this compared to 10 horsepower on the new  one and real world MPG on this around about 100   MPG real world MPG on the brand new model in  reality probably around about 100 as well but   there's now a hint of sadness because the  magical mix that makes this the people's   bike is starting to imbalance because you  need for a real everyday mode of Transport   the thing that makes this so popular you need a  few key things you need it to be extremely good   value not just from a new bike perspective  but I'm talking as a used proposition it's   got to be good value it's got to be it's  got to be readily available there needs to   be a large enough selection of these to keep  prices competitive and it has to be reliable   but the problem is now the imbalance has begun  because the numbers the numbers are dwindling the   reliability as comes with age will will decrease  in relation to the newer bikes and of course all   of this pushes the pricing up so Ian the owner  of this bike five years ago paid 500 pounds Fred   and I remember when I lived in London five or  six years ago you could take your pick from   dozens maybe even hundreds of these in London  at the roundabout the 700 pound Mark and I was   so so tempted I almost pulled the trigger and  bought one the problem is now if you want one of   these the exact same video and paid 500 pounds for  six years ago you're going to have to pay 2 000   pounds for it and the reality is an auto trader in  the UK at the moment the number of these available   six and the most expensive versions of  these in really nice condition and this   is the problem now they've now surpassed  the price of a brand new 2022 Honda Cubs so   gone are the days now where you can go out and buy  one of these for peanuts and just thrash it about   so that magical mix is now gone so if you have  been considering one of these for a few months   maybe even a few years don't even wait another six  months because chances are the prices will have   gone up even more this is the last time you're  going to be able to see these at these kinds of   prices because they're getting more air they're  getting more appealing as the months go on and   I think people now are starting to realize that  the end of the year is here if you want to grab   one of these Don't Wait Another Minute we'll wrap  it up there we'll have a coffee and then head back   but I wanted to leave it on one point final point  because when you're in the town here just going   for nice casual rides below 30 or 40 miles an  hour whether it's a Honda car by the Vespa these   mopeds these small scooters make such incredible  brilliantly effective modes of Transport parked   in my painting anywhere don't worry about them  too much they really are the the ultimate mode   of City Transport and it's it's really made  me want to and I mean this consider possibly   looking into buying a new version of these maybe  this is a little bit more hard work than in your   one with a fuel tap and everything like that  and it Kickstart maybe I'd look at a new one   but I genuinely would actually now consider  possibly buying the new version of this Honda Cub   watch the space right we'll wrap it up there  thanks so much everyone for coming along please   do give the video a like subscribe to the  channel and we'll see you in the next one
