thank you [Music] what's going on everybody so I know it's disappointing I haven't done a video on the Ducati yet I promise you I will do a review video on my Ducati because it's one of my favorite bikes but today's bike of choice is this amazing BMW r1100 RS now why I chose to do a video on this bike well obviously I'm a big BMW motorcycle fan in general having owned and still owned several BMW Motorcycles but this particular one I feel for a 90s bike never really got enough recognition decades later you always hear about people talking about like the r80 GS which is a remarkable bike and you know some of like the r100 uh air cooled AirHeads you know from the late 80s early 90s are also sought after but you don't hear much about the r1100 RS in fact I've never actually seen another r1100 RS in person until I came across this particular bike so that's why I'm doing a video on it because I've got a chance to put some serious miles on it I actually bought it by complete Randomness I was not actually on the market for one but this one popped up it was at an incredible price one owner and I mean by one owner is literally one owner and I I love riding the Ducati which I'll do a video on it I promise but it's not the best touring motorcycle what am I mean by touring is it's not the best for just cruising on the highway at 85 miles an hour minimal wind resistance and the position of your body it's a street bike but much more comfortable than a sport bike so that whole reasoning appealed to me when I this came into my line of sight so we'll do a little walk around of this bike so you get a justification of why I like this bike and I'm going to give you some reasons as to why I like this bike there's a lot of them there's also a couple of negatives but the positives exceed the negatives and so I think that's why this bike deserves some spotlight so yes this is a 1996 r1100 RS now this is a oil and air cooled engine and meaning by that is that it's an oil cooled head air cooled cylinder now this is an r259 1100 CC boxer engine so if I mean by boxer is if you saw my other videos the Pistons are going my helmet down very carefully they're going back and forth like this it's a boxer engine it's BMW signature engine I shouldn't say signature because there's a multitude of other motorcycles that have used this engine design for years years it's a very good engine design it's one of my favorites because it's very linear when it comes to power torque right off the bat and it pulls all the way to the red line and I like that out of an engine it's not not too stroky where there's nothing that explodes it's very linear so it's very predictable now this is a 96 model these came out in the public eye in 94. r259 1100 cc mated to a shaft to the rear random pinion now this particular bike which is kind of futuristic in my opinion even though it was more common well it's almost every bike is standard now as fuel injection BMW is doing fuel injection on their motorcycles in the 80s which that was state of the art and even into the 90s but this has the updated Bosch system uh that the 259 had it's one of my favorite systems because it's very reliable it's very simple and it's a very headache free fuel injection system now I like this bike for many reasons and why I like this bike is number one it's a BMW reliability is the first note to come to light they're incredibly reliable when you see a BMW motorcycle with 80 000 miles I wouldn't hesitate especially if it's been well maintained I'd buy a BMW with 150 000 miles which that's unheard of for a motorcycle those motorcycles their shelf life is quite short in comparison to what a car would be mileage wise but BMWs since day one have been just incredible they're built for longevity they're well engineered this bike and its motor setup is none short of that it's phenomenal I would ride this across the country tomorrow without even hesitating and you got to think about it this is from 1996. so I came across this bike one owner low miles for the year I mean what I mean by low miles I got I think 22 Yeah 22 000 647 miles I mean the bike's in incredible shape it came with all the manuals uh it's just it was a the price point for it how it looked how it rode it was well worth well worth the money so I really like this bike for multitude reasons because a number one reliability is amazing number two it's touring yet sporty you move this bike handles like it's on a dime it'll turn on a dime and number three is its power delivery now this r259 for 1100 CC makes 90 horsepower roughly and maybe about 75 to 80 foot pounds of torque which that doesn't sound like a lot but this bike feels it actually exceeds what a 90 horsepower motorcycle would expect to feel like it hauls absolute butt and it is an absolute joy to ride you roll on the throttle it'll give a demonstration we'll go for a ride but you literally roll in the throttle and it pulls all the way through and it is for 90 horsepower it's blistering quick in my opinion I've rode other 90 horsepower bikes in the same realm and they don't pull like this does for the horsepower numbers so it's it's a joy to drive it's really fun in traffic in City riding it's very Nimble it's center of gravity is super low being a boxer that's why these always have appealed to me and another option I really like about this I am not the world's tallest guy okay so most motorcycles they sit quite High my Paris to car obviously I'm on like one foot or the other it sits incredibly High I'm used to that but this bike if you're on the market for a motorcycle and you're like oh I don't like the bikes that sit super high this bike sits very low and that's why I love this particular models how low it sits for being a Touring bike it also has options like lowering the foot pegs you can literally lower these handlebars you can go lower you can bring them in you can bring them out it's fully customizable this seat goes lower it can go higher heck these foot pegs are adjustable they can go lower higher so this bike is very customizable to the rider itself which I love and for being 90s technology is incredible I mean it was so ahead of its time Factory Brembo disc brakes and I mean you know brake rating on a scale of one to ten I'd probably give these like a six they're not incredible it's not a light bike uh it's got eight Factory ABS which in the 90s that was pretty state-of-the-art that still works great and it's overall comfortability for lawn Halls when I put this in like the r 1200 LT you know which is their big Touring bike no this still has substantial wind noise but it's not a sport bike it's that perfect setting of like I'm gonna go ride 300 miles today and I'm not gonna wake up the next morning feeling like I just was in a boxing room with Mike Tyson it's a very comfortable bike for lawn halls and that's why I really like it is just because you can zip around the canyons and then go do touring and ride back and not feel like you did 300 miles so obviously it's you know it's got a little bit of that 90s Vibe for a Touring bike but I mean it's just it's aged very well and when I say I have not seen one of these in person before I have not I mean I'm trying to think of I've never seen an RS in this year in person so if you've had one or if you're like oh I see these all the time well congrats because I have knots and uh this one caught my eye I'm like that's kind of a rare bike as far as something from the 90s now some BMW models have a raising lowering ability for the windscreen this does not this does not have all the amenities that a lot of other bikes have from the BMW line and I guess that would be somewhat of a negative or a con I would say it does not have unfortunately heated grips or heated seats about the only thing that I have is ABS option and emergency you know hazards option you turn on the key here obviously it's a ABS warning lights got your neutral warning light your battery your low fuel high beams and your turn signals on this side right here okay so obviously the signature BMW Airhead sounds [Music] good AirHeads always have a very distinct sound and um it hasn't changed much as far as you know my Paris to car from 89 sounds the same as this my father's k-1200 from 2007 sounds the same as this they just they're a good sounding engine okay so you got your oil temp gauge right here that is just measuring the temperature of your oil I it's never gone beyond this slide to be honest I need your fuel gauge rough range I've actually have never ran the range fully on this bike so I don't know what its exact full range is and I'm being flat-footed right now on this bike I'm sitting very comfortable so I am at an astonishing height of five foot nine on a good day and this bike I am completely flat footed on so all right Factory side cases obviously these are great to have they're removable and plenty of storage not amazing he also had an option to put a top case but this does not come with it all right another condo list these you will hear 50 50 on the comments some people will say that was the best bike I ever had put you know 180 000 miles no headaches you'll see another comment that says I put 5 000 miles in the gearbox blew up I have no validation of whether that's true or not there are some recalls of the gearboxes in these early 90s r259 engines there is no really substantial evidence that the gearboxes are weak on these but it is a potential you hear that people said oh I've had to rebuild this gearbox several times yada yada I've not experienced that but just be forewarned that is a potential con with these mid 90s early 90s oil head uh made it to the Transmissions that these came with because it was a new era of engine design and a new era of transmission design the the production of this was from 94 to 2001. in 99 they came with a six-speed

option which had good reviews as well but just before Warren's if you are looking for one of these there's things to look out for they're very robust and reliable bikes but anything and everything has a weak point and obviously if the transmission is clunking a lot noticeably clunking that is a red flag a little bit is normal on these but a lot is something to be concerned about also look for any substantial wear leaking noise in this rough area this is a weak point if not addressed correctly as well as if you have any oil leaking up underneath here and whatnot it's normal to have a little bit of oil down here if it has higher than standard miles but just the Driveline I would say is the weak point on these just just double check everything that that is something I would definitely advise on these parts are still easy to get for them it's a BMW so not everything is really cheap to have serviced but they're very easy to work on these panels come off very easily for ease of access with the engines just the Phillips and then these panels come off and you have access to the engine and price wise this is where it's a pro most people look at this bike oh you probably spend six grand on this these bikes are very affordable I would say a rough price price range estimate for an RS with fairly low miles what I mean by fairly low is something under than under 70 000 miles I would expect to pay three thousand bucks so you get a lot of bang for the buck when you think about it you get a full-on touring motorcycle that's sporty it's reliable it looks good it's a very comfortable riding bike for something that you would pay less of what a Honda Civic costs so that's just something to consider they're very affordable the price range of these is phenomenal and they really don't ride any different than like like I said my father's got a k-1200 RT which is significantly higher than this I mean it is comical how much higher that that bike is than this and it really rides no different in my opinion from the RT as far as this is I feel this is a little bit more sporty obviously the art newer RT has more amenities heated seats grips in other various attributes that technologically make the bike better in that regards but as far as handling riding and sound and feel there's not much in comparison to this then his RT it's an absolute blast to ride and well enough of me talking about the bike let's go take it for a spin and get a first hand look of what it's like to ride one of these and well I'm not going to ride this lightly I'll get on it I'll show you how quick the acceleration is and uh so you get a rough idea of what to expect from in 1996 BMW r1100 RS oh man thank you foreign foreign what the acceleration is like on a 1996 BMW r1100 RS thank you
