Welcome to our Deep dive into the news from  Thailand uhhuh it's February 26th 2025 and   well let's just say it's quite a mixed bag today  yeah it really is we've got fraud tourism and   even a pygm hippo celebrity all making headlines  sounds like we've got our work cut out for us okay   so let's start with a quick overview first up  fraud cases in Thailand have skyrocketed really   yeah it's pretty crazy like a staggering 112%  increase compared to last year wow that's a lot   we're talking whopping 168 million scam calls and  SMS messages just in 20124 alone 168 million you   heard that right 168 million that's unbelievable  how much it's gone up right next we have a story   um it involves a seven-year-old student in nakon  C tamarat who fell out of a moving minibus oh   thankfully though he's unharmed that's good to  hear and then we're heading over to fukat and   Bangkok where illegal hotels are causing quite a  stir oh I've heard about this seem some foreign   investors are you know turning Apartments into  short-term rentals and the Thai hotel association   is not happy about it I can imagine and from  a battle over beds to an actual brawl uh we've   got a lady boy fight in pataya that was caught  on camera seems a love triangle got a little   out of hand a lady boy brawl yeah you heard that  right things got pretty physical oh wow Switching   gears now um former prime minister pra chocha had  this vision of Thailand uh you know becoming the   Switzerland of the East the Switzerland of the  East yeah part of his vision was this massive   landbridge project but it's not really a bridge so  what is it then it's like a complex cargo transfer   system interesting and finally we'll talk about  mudang he's this pygmy hippo who's become quite   the celebrity I see some pictures he is pretty  cute he is but some Animal Welfare groups are   claiming he's being exploited at the cowcow open  Zoo oh I see so was a bit of controversy there   now before we get into all of that let's get you  updated on the weather and give you some of that   important financial data sounds good all right  for those of you in Bangkok it's partly cloudy   and a pleasant 25° C pataya is looking at mostly  cloudy skies with a slightly warmer 26° okay over   in fukat it's overcast with a temperature of 29°  while Kos Samui might see some light rain at 28°   uhh and finally up north in shangai is partly  cloudy and a comfortable 22° nice all right   and now for the exchange rates I'm ready today  the US dollar is trading at 33.79 tiout okay the   British pound at 42.8 got it the Euro at 35.5  4 mhm and the Swiss frank at 37.87 all right   that's good to know and lastly for all of you  gold enthusiasts out there one bot of gold will   cost you 46850 tibot today okay well thank you for  all of that so where should we start with the news   all that fraud Situation's pretty alarming isn't  it 112 % that's a massive jump it is yeah I mean   what's driving this huge surge in scams well I  think a few factors are at play here you know   one is well just the increasing sophistication of  scammers these days they're using technology to   their advantage you know making their scams more  convincing and a lot harder to detect that makes   sense they're using tactics like identity theft  where they steal your personal information uh   to open accounts or make purchases in your name  that's so scary and then there's the financial   fraud you know like fishing scams you know where  they trick you into giving them your bank details   or credit card information oh yeah I've gotten so  many of those right and then you have these data   breaches where hackers steal well huge amounts  of data from companies and that includes personal   information that can be used for scam so it's a  combination of those clever tactics and then our   you know increasing Reliance on technology exactly  and unfortunately as technology keeps advancing   so do the methods used by these scammers you know  it's this constant game of cat and mouse right so   what can people do to protect themselves it feels  a little bit overwhelming to be honest you know I   think the most important thing is awareness just  be really cautious of any unsolicited calls or   messages especially those requesting personal  or financial information always double check   the sender's identity even if it appears to be  from a trusted source and this one's important   never ever click on suspicious link or attachments  that's good advice it's a reminder that you know   with all the convenience that technology brings  it also creates new vulnerabilities exactly now   uh should we move on to that incident with the  student falling from the minibus yeah that was   a close call thankfully he wasn't hurt tell me  a little bit more about what happened well this   7-year-old was you know on his way to school in  nans tamarat when he fell out of the rear door of   the minius and it turns out that the driver who  also owned the vehicle he'd modified the seating   to accommodate more students so is he trying  to like pack more kids in yeah it seems so he   replaced the original seats with these wooden  benches so it's suspected that the rear door   wasn't properly secured because of all of these  modifications that sounds incredibly dangerous   yeah I mean were those modifications even allowed  well that's part of the ongoing investigation um   the driver is already facing a fine for negligence  and authorities are looking into you know whether   he was operating without proper authorization wow  he claims the rear door Mal function but it's you   know pretty clear that modifying the vehicle like  that created a serious safety hazard yeah and it's   just such a stark reminder of how important it is  to prioritize safety especially when you know when   children are involved absolutely now how about we  Shi gears to a different kind of Transport trouble   what do you think about those illegal hotels in  fukat and Bangkok yeah what's the story there I   mean why are they causing so much controversy well  you know I think it really boils down to a clash   between the traditional Hotel industry and um  this you know this rise of short-term rentals and   these are often facilitated by online platforms  like Airbnb you know a lot of foreign investors   particularly from Russia and China are purchasing  apartments and then renting them out to tourists   for well periods shorter than that legally  mandated 30 days so they're undercutting the   hotels basically yeah exactly and the Thai hotel  association well they're not too happy about it   they're you know calling it unfair competition and  want the government to step in and do something   yeah I see their point you know it wouldn't be  a Level Playing Field right and you know they're   also concerned about the impact you know on local  communities citing things like overcrowding noise   complaints from Neighbors and even a sense of  displacement you know so it's a multifaceted   issue you know concerns about Fair competition  safety and then of course you know the overall   impact on the community precisely it'll be really  interesting to see how the government navigates   this issue especially with the increasing  popularity of short-term rentals definitely now   I'm a little bit curious about this landbridge  project it sounds so ambitious yeah it is what   was the rationale behind it well you know the  former prime minister he had this vision of you   know Thailand as the Switzerland of the East right  like this you know neutral and prosperous hub for   trade and finance and this landbridge project well  it was a key part of this Vision I remember when   it was first announced I was picturing like this  massive Bridge spanning the entire country yeah   but it's actually something completely different  isn't it yeah you're right it's more about   creating this sophisticated cargo transfer system  where you know ships unload on one coast and then   their containers are transported Overland like by  Rail and then they're reloaded onto other ships on   the opposite Coast so it's more about efficiency  and Logistics than you know a literal Bridge yeah   what were the potential benefits well the idea was  to offer this alternative route for all the carg   ship I see so they could bypass the congested  straight of Mala which you know is a major   shipping route between the Indian and Pacific  Oceans so by offering you know a faster and   potentially cheaper route Thailand could attract  more cargo traffic and boost its economy oh I see   yeah so strategically positioning itself as this  global trade Hub exactly but of course you know a   project of this magnitude comes with its own set  of challenges and potential downsides like what   well for starters I mean the environmental impact  of you know such a massive infrastructure project   it would have to be really carefully considered  yeah there are concerns about deforestation   habitat loss and potential disruption to the  ecosystems right and what about cost I mean   a project like that would require significant  investment right absolutely and then there's you   know the geopolitical aspect you know can Thailand  really maintain its neutrality in a world that's   becoming increasingly polarized it's hard to  say it's a bold vision for sure but whether it's   feasible in the long run is another question  entirely now for something well completely   different let's talk about mooding oh yes that  pygmy hippo who's captured the hearts of so many I   know he seems absolutely adorable yeah but there's  this controversy surrounding him too isn't there   yeah there is what's it all about well he's become  quite the attraction at the Cow open Zoo but   um some Animal Welfare groups are voicing these  concerns about his well-being you know and whether   he's being exploited what are their specific  concerns you know they argue that um no matter how   well-intentioned the zoo is no captive environment  can truly replicate the natural habitat and social   structures that a wild animal needs to thrive  okay they're worried that mang's enclosure is   inadequate and that he's being subjected to well  you know unnatural interactions with humans you   know all for the sake of entertainment so what's  the zoo saying well they're insisting that mudang   is receiving excellent and that his enclosure  meets all the international Animal Welfare   standards they point to the fact that his mother  has successfully given birth to seven cabs at the   zoo as evidence of you know their commitment to  Animal Welfare so it's this classic debate about   you know the ethics of keeping wild animals in  captivity on the one hand you have the potential   educational benefits you know and the role zoos  can play in conservation efforts but you know on   the other hand there's the argument that wild  animals just belong in the wild period you're   exactly right it's a really complex issue and  there are valid points on both sides ultimately   it comes down to you know a question of balancing  the needs of animals with the desires of humans   I guess it's a debate that's likely to continue  as long as zoos exist I agree and it's a really   important conversation to have now before we wrap  up this part of our Deep dive let's touch on that   incident in aayutha oh yeah the warehouse storing  all those illegal chemicals what's the latest   on that well it turns out that this Warehouse  which is being rented by Chinese Nationals it   was stockpiling a variety of hazardous chemicals  like what you know things like hydrochloric acid   sulfuric acid sodium hydroxide and citric acid  wow some containers were even unlabeled you know   which raised further concern that's terrifying I  know right it's a disaster waiting to happen what   were they even doing with all this chemicals  right that's still under investigation the   authorities have confiscated the chemicals and are  conducting further analysis to determine the exact   nature and quantity of the substances involved but  what's clear is that they were operating without   the necessary permits which is a really serious  offense so what kind of penalties are they facing   well they're facing charges of unauthorized  possession of dangerous substances which   you know that can carry significant penalties  including potential imprisonment this incident   really underscores the importance of having those  strict regulations and enforcement when it comes   to hazardous materials absolutely the potential  consequences of mishandling or illegal storage   of these chemicals could be devastating both for  human health and the environment it's true this   case should serve as a wakeup call you know and  a reminder that vigilance and proactive measures   are really crucial to preventing such incidents  from occurring in the future this has been a   fascinating albe it somewhat unsettling dive into  the news from Thailand I think we need a little   break to process all this information I agree  let's take a short pause and then we'll come back   can Del a little deeper into some of these stories  and's good we'll be right back after a short break   see you soon you know it's been really interesting  discussing these stories today it's amazing to see   how they all sort of reflect these uh changing  Dynamics happening in Thailand right now it   really does feel like Thailand is at a Crossroads  yeah grappling with all these issues that are both   well you know local and Global exactly like take  the whole fraud thing for example it's not just   a problem here in Thailand it's you know it's a  world World Wide issue yeah and it's fueled by   all these technological advancements right and  how interconnected our world is becoming it's   almost like uh you know like a side effect of all  this progress we Embrace like all the convenience   of Technology but it also opens up all these  new avenues for criminals right absolutely and   as scammers get even more sophisticated it's  so crucial for you know individuals and the   authorities to adapt right and develop strategies  to combat these threats education and awareness   are key it's like an arms race almost with both  sides constantly trying to outsmart each other   that's a great analogy now uh shifting gears a  bit let's talk about the illegal hotels this issue   really highlights another tension facing Thailand  you know that Balancing Act between economic   growth but also preserving the uh the character  of local communities yeah it's a classic tale of   disruption I think you have this new business  model it's all enabled by technology you know   challenging the uh the established Norms of the  hotel industry and it's not just about competition   right all those concerns that were raised by the  Thai hotel association about overcrowding noise   complaints and even the displacement of you know  local residents they're valid it's about trying   to find a way to integrate these new platforms  into that you know that existing framework while   still ensuring that they don't you know erode the  quality of life for people who actually live in   these places right it's a reminder that progress  isn't always linear right it's about um you know   Finding solutions that benefit everyone not just  the people who stand to profit the most absolutely   and speaking of ambitious projects I mean the  former prime minister's vision of you know like   a Switzerland of the East with that land bridge as  like it's centerpiece that's fascinating you know   it's a great example of how Thailand is trying  to position itself on that uh Global stage it is   it's a bold strategy aiming to capitalize on the  country's location and you know its reputation for   neutrality but as we were talking about earlier  it's not without its challenges the potential   environmental impact is a major concern you know  a project of that scale would inevitably have well   consequences for ecosystems and biodiversity  and then there's also that question of whether   Thailand can really remain neutral in a world  that is becoming increasingly polarized well   it's a delicate Balancing Act for sure but it's  fascinating to see how Thailand is striving to you   know carve out a niche for itself in this global  economy indeed now how about we talk about a story   that well touches on a very different aspect  of Thailand what about you know the debate   surrounding muang yeah he's become a real symbol  hasn't he I mean of this larger conversation   about animal tourism and the ethics of well you  know of keeping wild animals in captivity it's a   debate that's uh that's playing out not just  in Thailand but all over the world right and   it's such a complex issue there aren't any easy  answers on one hand you have the educational   value of zoos and the role they play in you know  conservation but then on the other hand there's   that fundamental question of whether it's even you  know it's right to confine these wild animals for   our entertainment right regardless of how well  they're treated it's a question that you know   it's becoming increasingly difficult to ignore  especially as awareness of Animal Welfare grows   yeah and I I think it's really forcing zoos to you  know rethink their whole approach to maybe focus   more on conservation and education yeah rather  than simply you know displaying animals for profit   I think that's a really positive development it's  about well it's about respecting the inherent   worth of these animals you know recognizing that  they're not just Commodities that we can use for   you know our Amusement absolutely now before  we move on to our final segment I want to go   back to that incident with the uh with the illegal  chemicals in iua I think it's a stark reminder of   the potential dangers that are out there even in a  country that's known for you know like it's Beauty   and Tranquility yeah it's a sobering reminder  that vigilance is really crucial the fact that   these chemicals were being stored without proper  authorization uh really highlights how much we   need stricter regulations and better enforcement  to you know prevent things like this from   happening again it's a shared responsibility isn't  it yeah we all have a role to play in safeguarding   our communities and the environment from you know  these hidden threats I couldn't agree more now as   we wrap up this segment I'm curious to hear your  thoughts on something you know we've covered a lot   of different stories today everything from scams  and illegal hotels to uh you know these Grand   infrastructure projects and ethical dilemmas  right what do you think all of this you know   reveals about uh about the state of Thailand in  2025 it's a great question I think that paints a   picture of a country that's you know struggling  with the complexities of progress Thailand is   navigating you know these rapid technological  advancements economic globalization and this   shifting geopolitical landscape it's a time of  well you know it's a time of both opportunity and   uncertainty and it's really fascinating to see how  all of these Transformations unfold I agree and I   think amidst all of this change there's still this  uh this enduring Spirit of resilience right and   adaptability that really defines Thailand you  know it's a country that's constantly evolving   while you know while trying to preserve its unique  identity it's an exciting time to be following   Thailand's journey and I'm eager to see you know  what the future holds but for now why don't we   delve a little deeper into some of these stories  you know and explore their implications for   Thailand and uh well Beyond in our final segment  well welcome back to our final segment it feels   like it's been quite a journey through the Tha  news today hasn't it it really has yeah we've   covered well quite a lot of ground from those uh  alarming fraud statistics to that whole debate   surrounding mudang the pygmy hippo and it seems  like so many of these stories really highlight   you know the challenges and opportunities that  that Thailand is facing you know as it navigates   this well rapidly changing world yeah that's  true it's a country that seems to be you know   embracing all this progress while still grappling  with the complexities that inevitably come with   it take the illegal hotels issue for example  it's just such a fascinating example of how   you know globalization and Technology are really  disrupting those traditional Industries for sure   the rise of platforms like Airbnb has well created  this whole new Marketplace for short-term rentals   right and it's attracting foreign investors  and you know challenging the established   well the established Norms of the hotel sector  and it's forcing Thailand to really reconsider   how it regulates this whole well this whole  emerging industry yeah I mean the Tha Hotel   association's concerns about unfair competition I  mean they're understandable right I mean they've   invested a lot in infrastructure and they operate  under a very strict regulatory framework and then   you have these new players who while they often  operate in a legal gray area but simply you know   trying to just shut down those platforms well  that's not really a solution no it's not the   demand for short-term rentals is real right  it's driven by Travelers who you know who are   seeking those different experiences often at  lower prices exactly the key is finding some   kind of balance right like finding a way to you  know integrate these platforms into the existing   framework while also ensuring that there's Fair  competition and you know protecting the interests   of local communities I think it comes down to  adapting to this well this changing landscape   right yeah while still preserving what makes  Thailand so unique it's about finding solutions   that work for everyone not just you know not just  a select few now let's shift gears again let's   go back to moodang what do you think okay yeah  he really has sparked such a passionate debate   hasn't he he's become well I guess you could call  him this unlikely symbol of you know of this much   larger conversation that we're having you know  about our relationship with wild animals and you   know the ethics of keeping them in captivity and  this is a debate that's happening everywhere not   just in Thailand yeah that's true his popularity  has put a spotlight on you know the practices of   zoos and these other animal attractions it's  forcing us to ask some well some uncomfortable   questions about animal welfare and exploitation  and as awareness of these issues grows I think   we're seeing a real shift in public opinion  you know no absolutely people are becoming   more Discerning they're more conscious of  the impact you know that their choices have   on what on animal yeah they're looking for you  know those experiences that are both enjoyable   but also ethical right exactly and this is  putting pressure on zoos to change you know   to move beyond that model of Simply displaying  animals it's about prioritizing conservation   education and you know the well-being of all the  animals in their care and I think that's a really   positive development it's about recognizing  that you know animals are not just there for   our Amusement they deserve our respect yeah it's  about you know fostering a much more harmonious   Rel relationship between humans and uh and the  natural world and speaking of Harmony what about   that uh that vision of Thailand as the Switzerland  of the East oh right it's an intriguing idea this   ambition to be this uh you know neutral hub for  trade and finance like this uh this Beacon of   stability in a really turbulent world that  proposed landbridge project was a key part   of that like a symbol of Thailand's aspirations  to really become This Global player but you know   as we were talking about ear earlier such a big  ambitious project comes with well with its own   set of challenges and potential downsides doesn't  it yeah I mean the environmental impact alone is   a huge concern right and trying to stay truly  neutral in a world that's well that's becoming   increasingly polarized that's no easy task it's  about balancing economic aspirations right but   also being mindful of environmental concerns and  these uh you know geopolitical realities it's a   delal balancing act it's a reminder that you  know progress isn't always a straight line it's   about making choices weighing those tradeoffs  and navigating these really complex Landscapes   now before we wrap up our show today I want to  quickly touch on that story about um about the   illegal chemicals in iua oh yeah it's a reminder  that well that even in the most idilic settings   there can be hidden dangers lurking and it  highlights how important it is to you know   to be vigilant to have those robust regulations  and really good enforcement mechanisms in place   we just can't afford to be complacent when it  comes to things like you know like hazardous   materials no you're right I mean the potential  consequences of negligence are just too high well   I think it's a shared responsibility don't you I  mean we all have to work together to protect our   communities and the environment from those kinds  of threats absolutely and as we wrap up this deep   dive today I hope that you're leaving with well  with a better understanding of all the forces   that are shaping Thailand right now it's a country  that's you know going through a lot of transition   yeah balancing tradition and progress navigating  all these local and Global challenges it's both   well it's both enchanting and complex and it's a  journey that's worth following and we'll be here   to guide you along the way offering you know  all those insights and Analysis as Thailand's   story unfolds so thanks for joining us on the  Deep dive today
