Staying On An Active Volcano in Banda Neira
well, all right it's a couple hours later. i went for a swim for a little bit they have uh some goggles and a snorkel and some flippers that I could use it's pretty nice out there tons of fish and coral and just beautiful i'm not going to go over there right now and explore the city what we're going to do now is we're just gonna go for a little stroll on the back side of this uh bungalow here we're gonna just take the trail this way and just see what's out there yeah i want to show you this. this volcano is huge and the owner, Allan, he was telling me that it erupted in 1988 spewed lava everywhere luckily he said the wind was blowing from that direction this way and so none of the ash and not a lot of the smoke made it back to the island over here but he said it was a pretty frightening time i imagine so looks like a big acorn doesn't it okay but he said this leads to the to the main road and so from here we're gonna go check out the lava flow of uh from the eruption in 1988 so when you fly into banda you can see it you know three-quarters of this volcano is green and luscious and then just one whole side of it is just dark gray and so that's what we're gonna go check out so it looks like there are a few houses on this side Allan was saying there are about a thousand people that live on this island but i don't think there are any warungs or any restaurants like that definitely not any Alphamarts or convenience stores or anything like that so that's a nice one I've got seven days here i got plenty of time i think to see the island i don't want to do everything in one day and knock it all out hello, how are you? Where are you going? you live here? i live over there and you live here? it's very beautiful, the colors My name is Ariel, and you? my name is nick what's your name my name is Ariel nice to meet you nice to meet you this is a nice place to hang out nice view very nice i like it here i like it here he is hey hey hey all right i'll be back hey I'll be back i like the green house, that's nice okay so so far friendly folk here i'd say friendly folk there you go there's the volcano right there wow we going let's go let's go you can show me around show me your island where is your home? this way this one okay let's go how many people liver around here? it's hot isn't it okay so just kind of opens up over here at least it's the nice trail he just kicked those chickens this is your house? okay i like it it's the yellow house see you bye-bye, adios. i like that i need this shirt youtube is my hobby hello i basically just brought a backpack over here i left my suitcase at the hotel in Ambon yeah cause you saw that airplane you can't bring a whole lot so that's what they were doing i thought they were going on a stroll with me no they're going to the mosque lava flow this way i think the only animal i need to watch out for these chickens a lot of chickens free-range chickens. i bet they taste pretty good too i'm not sure if i went to the right place or not but that's okay this is still pretty dang beautiful doesn't look like there's a trail going that way or anything maybe i don't know but look at this you got a small island out there what looks like maybe a lighthouse i think this is the edge of Neira, the main island or the one that i flew into there's a little rock way out there i think there are three or four islands that nobody lives on and here's a big concrete structure right here i'm only going to assume things like this were left over by the dutch i don't know for sure but surely something like this was built by the dutch maybe somebody that uh they called them perkanils i think they were the supervisors, the people who overlooked the nutmeg plantations and i read a lot of their houses that they used to live in are rotting away and crumbling all over the island so saw this little girl over here i think she's laying out some fish they call it ikan asin, salted fish salted fish maybe i figured if she could make it over here, so can i right yeah okay. can you eat this? they just lay it out right here hot tea hot tea she's like, how about you be careful hey hello okay i'm getting close i'm getting close so it looks like Antho here he's going to be my boat driver, my boat captain here and back. all right let's do this all right i got this and Antho was telling me he's from this village over here so maybe i met some of his brothers and sisters and cousins just now so you have family over here? so going over to the main island over there and we're gonna get some lunch because i am starving i had some breakfast this morning just had some toast watermelon an egg, that's really it and i'm almost 10 000 steps in today so it's almost two o'clock i think i need some food and i think i'm already a little too sunburned for only being here five hours it's gonna be a long week i need to take care of that so i'll put some sunscreen on don't worry and that's another thing when i arrived earlier today there was tons of plastic out here but now it's just all gone you know it's almost as if somebody dumped trash right when i got here and it was just kind of spreading all out which i don't doubt i've seen that happen here in Indonesia but it's all gone now the sailboat i bet there's some pretty cool boats that come in and out of here i'm sure this has some history to it maybe hello america yes, very far is this a dutch building? it is? yeah no this is a house, oh it's a guest house yeah oh this is the guest house too okay yeah i thought maybe with the arches it was a dutch building but i think everything's dutch hello hello so how many rooms are here seven rooms anybody here now? any guests? how many people? now today check out now one room before all ok so they went back to Ambon is this your cat? what's your name?
