Season Two Episode Fourteen. Signal Hill, Irish Loop day 12
[Music] foreign there's a problem with Andy's bike his radiator is overflowing [Music] [Music] [Music] this is our last day of touring the island in this episode we go to Signal Hill then to Cape Spear we stop off at the colony of the Avalon ride on 12 kilometers of newly graveled Road have lunch and tripacy then continue on the Irish loop back to St John's well we are currently in St John's temperatures are around the 16 to 17 degree mark you had a good ride in it was nice little Camp right downtown of St John's in a Municipal Park that's pretty good we are in the RV section s along the way over here so it's good we are going to meet up at Signal Hill momentarily pretty good night's sleep I had pulled a muscle in my back a few days ago and it's starting to heal so I'm still a little bit tender so I'm a bit cautious about that my bike needs a bath desperately so I might wash it tonight so see foreign [Music] foreign [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] 12 years ago I was in St John's for Canadian Actors Equity conference it was the first time on the rock do you like The Kilt I made it I toured Signal Hill and trekked on all the trails around it I saw a Canadian Coast Guard ship leave the port [Music] there were nine of us the met up at Signal Hill that day to do the Irish Loop and we had a new fellow join us too Brian Kenny and he's a sound designer who also works in the theater so it's good to have him alone it's time to leave Signal Hill wind our way through Saint John's and must admit the view coming down this hill is of the city is spectacular [Music] foreign [Music] foreign [Music] coming up on your right by the famous houses that are painted bright colors that appears in most of the tourist photos of Saint John's [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] who is in front of me on the left is experiencing some cooling issues his radiator is overflowing Rob and Steve help him resolve this issue and we're down to six for the Irish Loop [Music] this is Cape Spear and St John's is back that way isn't that a spectacular view over there oh I can see the Confederation Center from St John's you can't see it but I can't [Music] oh this is amazing [Music] wow there's Signal Hill well isn't this something else foreign [Music] let's see where we can put this ah I see a spot couple of spots the view is incredible we're all going to switch cameras have a look another way foreign [Music] Cape Spear [Music] foreign [Music] here we have another look across the bay to St John's you can see Signal Hill up in the top it's a very Snug Harbor [Music] over the next hour we ride through the towns of Bay Bulls witness Bay mobile burnt Cove Cape Royal Calvert [Music] [Music] I gotta admit driving along the coast is refreshing it's nice the water on one side and Winding Road [Music] of elevation [Music] houses built on sides of hills [Music] Snug Harbor here medium-sized trawlers [Music] foreign [Music] we take a midday break at the colony of Avalon [Music] colony of Avalon there was a mansion house built near this site between 1621 and 1625. and there was active hostility here between the French privateers and the fishermen mansion house became the seat of Sir David Kirk's government of Newfoundland from 1637 to 1650. in 1637 sir David Kirk became governor of Newfoundland his Royal patent supplanting Lord Baltimore's proprietary claim to the colony of Avalon the Newfoundland coat of arms is that granted to Kirk as governor in 1639 Kirk took possession of Baltimore's mansion house and despite restrictions forbidding Coastal settlement established an efficient government in a prosperous colony he successfully defended himself against charges brought by opponents of his royalist activities but was later arrested as the suit of Baltimore for the Caesar of Fairyland he died in London in the Klink prison foreign yeah [Music] foreign [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] foreign [Music] [Applause] [Music] foreign [Music] [Applause] [Music] this is renews in Newfoundland you see this fog blowing across the quite a wind out there too [Music] temperature dropped two degrees Celsius because of that foreign fog is rolling in [Music] traveling on from renews through Kappa Hayden we then hit some construction and we encounter 12 kilometers of extremely loose gravel crawl along at about 20 kilometers an hour you get to Portugal South and then have lunch in trapezi after lunch Gerhard points out to Jim that his rear tires down to the cords we evaluate that we could probably make it back to St John's but we have to go at a much slower pace [Music] foreign [Music] foreign here the terrain is rather flat and boggy every once in a while we would see Huts in the distance basically hunt camps used for hunting wildlife [Music] thank you [Music] foreign [Music] thank you [Music] they're in the distance is the causeway from middle gut to Saint Vincent's heading back to St John's
