with Putin and the Russian military even leading many of the battles in Ukraine but then that partnership suddenly violently ended take a look at this map The Rebel forces took control of the city of rustov undon then made their way North they said they made it within to about 120 miles of Moscow President Biden called world leaders as he monitored the situation both his National Security adviser and chairman of the Joint Chiefs canceled foreign trips to stay back and deal with it but then the group's leader suddenly announced it would turn back we have a lot to cover today and we begin with Kelly Kobie and Ukraine yesterday tonight the biggest challenge to President Putin's 23 years in power an unprecedented armed Rebellion inside Russia on the street level clashes reaching varanish a day's drive from Moscow Fighters with the Russian mercenary Wagner group led by yevgeni pragosian abandoning Ukraine and marching toward the Russian capital in a televised address overnight President Putin calling for goshen's Rebellion a stab in the back and treason and betrayal then late Saturday an Abrupt turnaround a deal apparently brokered by neighboring Belarus pregosian releasing this audio message now the moment has come when blood May spill that's why understanding the responsibility for spilling Russian blood on one of the sides we are turning back our convoys early Saturday the group seized the city of rostov on Don the Southern military headquarters and key logistic hub for Russia's war in nearby Ukraine armored vehicles taking over the streets Wagner fighters on patrol pulling out just hours ago pregosian's ruthless private Army has been key to bolstering Russia's regular forces in Ukraine especially in the symbolically important city of bakmut which Wagner says it finally captured in May at an estimated cost of tens of thousands of lives but for months he's criticized Russia's defense minister and the man in charge of the war in Ukraine the fight breaking into an open Insurrection Friday pregosian claiming the defense minister ordered this attack on his Fighters and accusing the military of launching the war in Ukraine based on lies early Saturday demanding the military leadership meet him in rostov Von Dawn vowing to march on Moscow if they refuse [Music] news readers on state TV calling on Wagner fighters to lay down their arms in Russia's cities authorities are tearing down Wagner recruitment posters Security Forces setting up roadblocks and checkpoints to protect Moscow bolstering security around the Kremlin the seat of Russian power and the president himself seriously challenged tonight though the immediate threat appears to have subsided and Kelly joins us now from Keith Kelly what is the Kremlin saying tonight about the deal that was brokered well the Kremlin says None of the none of the Wagner Fighters will be prosecuted and pregosian will move to Belarus the Kremlin calling today's events tragic Jose and Keith thank you so what do we know about the man behind the rebellion and what drove him to turn against the Kremlin Chief foreign correspondent Richard Engel has reported extensively on him and the Wagner group and has this report a senior U.S official tells NBC News the best way to understand what's happening now in Russia is a mafia power struggle yevgetti burgosin is a capo a mid-level and until recently loyal soldier who has risen through the ranks by doing Special tasks for his boss President Putin first it was food per goes and owned a chain of restaurants including the New Haven in St Petersburg which Putin and his early team used as a hangout earning him the nickname Putin's Chef over time he learned to cater to Putin's other needs most Americans know pregosin from the disinformation on their social media feeds he founded a bot Farm the internet research agency that according to the justice department so doubts about the legitimacy of the 2016 election highlighted racial tensions in the United States and promoted Donald Trump in 2022 pergozin reinvented himself again into a commander of a mercenary Army the Wagner group supplementing Russian troops in Ukraine which were failing on the battlefield he recruited thousands of convicts promising pardons in exchange for Frontline service thousands were sent to their deaths and according to the few who managed to escape they were shot if they attempted to retreat I asked Ukraine's president zielinski about the group earlier this month how do you describe Wagner and what it's doing on the ground here they are mercenaries and terrorists they are just Killers he said pragosan is also Rich he uses his private Army to prop up dictators in Africa in particular the president of the Central African Republic in exchange taking gold and blood diamonds worth a half a billion dollars a year according to diplomats but with money power and an armed Force pagosan has made enemies he accuses Russia's defense minister and army Chief driven by jealousy and treason of denying Wagner Fighters ammunition and now he wants revenge after one of the most dramatic days in Russia in decades pregosin reportedly agreed to some sort of Exile in Belarus but why was it his only way to survive and keep his lucrative businesses in Africa or is he just biding time it's hard to believe this murky power struggle is over Jose Richard Engel thank you let me now turn to former U.S ambassador to Russia Michael McFall Ambassador I know a lot is still unclear but when you look at what happened today was this all a stunt to prove a point or a real attempt to overthrow parts of the Russian government oh I don't think it was a stunt I think it was a mutiny I think that's the right word not a coup d'etat a fighting among Armed Forces to take over but to be loyal to Putin with dramatic consequences for undermining the stability and the consolidation of Russian Armed Forces has this changed the power structure inside the Kremlin is Putin mortally wounded politically I don't think he's mortally weakened I think he can survive this but he is much weaker today than he was just 24 hours ago just think about it these armies used to be fighting together with each other against the Ukrainian army they were threatening to fight each other inside Russia and no matter how the dust finally settles I think Putin emerges from this a lot weaker leader inside Russia Ambassador mcfaul thank you so much thanks for having me turning now to the latest on that disaster at the site of the Titanic that killed five people the support ship that dropped the submersible they were in into the sea returned to Port today our Ron Allen was there today the polar prints on a solemn Journey the support ship flags at half-mast that launched the Titan submersible on its fatal Expedition arriving back at home Port met by Canadian investigators beginning to try to figure out what caused the disaster that killed the five men who left here aboard the ship do you expect to be able to answer the question of what caused this implosion we take the time we need to do a thorough investigation and we're in the early stages and we need to scope out the lines of inquiry investigators say they've interviewed crew relatives of the victims aboard ship retrieved voice and data recorders as Maritime experts focus on the Titan's carbon fiber Hull and that its owner and pilot Stockton Rush killed in the implosion apparently ignored warnings to have the vessel tested and certified by independent agencies I'd like to be remembered as an innovator um I think it was General MacArthur said you remembered for the rules you break didn't have any external bodies governmental otherwise overseeing what they're doing the U.S Coast Guard has said it will lead the investigation what multinational probe as the tragedy to the international waters and riveted the world's attention it was spectacular Colin Taylor watched the search and rescue operation unfold in her haunted by the fact that he and his son had been on the very same Expedition a year ago Taylor says Rush convinced him it was safe I think you're never 100 satisfied we went into this knowing there were risks it's clearly not for the faint-hearted but now Russia's company ocean gate is closed down indefinitely while investigators look into why his last dive to the Titanic went so horribly wrong Ron Allen joins me now and Ron on top of the investigations you mentioned I understand Canadian police are now getting involved yes the police here have jurisdiction over the waterways they're looking into whether anything criminal happened that caused the deaths so far they say there's no indication of that Jose Ron Allen and St John's Canada thank you a potentially dangerous situation is unfolding in Montana right now a train derailment caused by a bridge collapse over the Yellowstone River has sent multiple train cars into the water authorities investigating the accident say some of the cars were carrying hot asphalt and molten sulfur nearby water treatment facilities have been shut down as a result officials are asking residents in the area to conserve water no injuries have been reported 37 million Americans are enduring a brutal Heat Wave right now with heat alerts in effect from New Mexico to Tennessee Texas and Louisiana are getting blasted especially hard with temperatures feeling as hot as 120 degrees in some areas some areas aren't expected to see any relief for the next week still ahead tonight the new abortion restrictions now in effect in several states are adoptions On The Rise as a result also a scene straight out of a horror movie killer whales going after a boat at Sea the frightening moments caught on camera today marks one year since the Supreme Court's seismic decision overturning Roe v Wade and groups on both sides of the issue gathered today for dueling rallies across the country including in the nation's capital while in North Carolina vice president Kamala Harris condemned the high Court's conservative justices for creating what she called a health care crisis how dare they attack basic health care how dare they attack our fundamental rights how dare they attack our freedom anti-abortion activists have long pointed to adoption as a viable alternative to terminating a pregnancy now that nearly half of all states have laws restricting abortion access have adoption rates increased zinc glass and wine investigates this is the moment Madeline Ballinger says she made the toughest decision of her life the moment she chose to place her newborn son up for adoption beautiful Madeline says restrictive abortion laws in Texas where she lives played a major part in her decision to carry her baby to term the then 20 year old was already a single mother of one son I didn't have a job I didn't think I could do it at all like I just didn't think I could handle it Madeleine considered terminating the pregnancy but Texas had banned abortion at six weeks even before Dobbs I was already so stressed out and I was just like how am I supposed to make that decision in two weeks she made the final decision to sign the adoption papers 48 hours after delivery traumatizing and it can be traumatizing for mama and baby opponents of abortion rights have long argued that overturning Roe vs Wade would result in more adoptions there is some anecdotal evidence that may be happening in some agencies yeah we've seen an increase the gladney center for adoption one of the largest adoption agencies in Texas has seen domestic infant adoption Spike 30 percent from last year and phone calls inquiring about adoptions up 55 percent those are some big gains why do you think they're happening how do you think part of it probably is from the Dobbs ruling we have seen in conversations we've had with our expectant mothers who some have indicated that have they had an ability to get an abortion or at least would have considered it had they had they chosen to do that the adoption center also citing the pandemic as a potential cause but there is not enough data to know if this will become a national Trend the answer is we just don't know yet we hear from some of our members that their numbers are relatively unchanged and others are seeing an increase either in inquiries or in placements so I think we have more work to do to really get to a clear answer on that Madeleine says restrictive abortion laws Rob women of the ability to Think Through seismic life decisions it makes me angry for all the other women who have are going through the exact same thing now but today she says she's come to terms with her decision and is thankful she chose an open adoption just seeing how happy he is seeing how taken care of he is that helps me cope a lot with the situation zinclair Samoa NBC News we're back in a moment with Wild video of killer whales going after a boat at sea it's happened again killer whales
