MY WORST TOURING NIGHTMARE - Moving Differently EP25
and in this week's episode of moving differently we're going to talk to you about what does a tour manager do i love it i absolutely love it our flight's been cancelled we are in an uber to new york from montreal canada james welcome to new york welcome sounds terrible we've been here all week i've been in the studio making music and now it's time for more shows we're going to montreal today spending like four hours in canada playing a big festival there coming back to new york at night two shows in new york one in new york one in new jersey tomorrow and then going to seattle opposite side of the country on sunday to play a day trip festival and then going home let's go let's get a transition it's like half past one in the afternoon it just touched down we're going to this festival called hill sonic is that what i'm saying right yeah yeah i knew it right because i heard him playing playing at 3 55 p.m and then we're going straight back to the airport and going back to new york because um so yeah i also need to get some sort of set ready because i'm dying so yeah now i'm actually okay transition probably remember the last time and the first time we came to a festival in canada they had no barriers anywhere people could just walk everywhere there was nothing stopping them so i'm kind of interested to see if it's the same today the most minimal barrier now to get to the market yeah like we come to the hardest bit and we haven't really been through any rash because this episode's about being a tm like what's the hardest part about being a tm hardest part about being a tm keeping everyone on time timing is everything everything is to be in order that's the hardest part of reality and timing i'm going to be being a team for now rashford i've been a tm for two years but um bit of tm for james come up to a year in september she's yeah what do you like about being a tm um the best part about being a team is the different tasks you have to tackle along the way when it comes to technical when it comes to hospitality yeah it can get difficult can get annoying but i love it i absolutely love it what makes a tm a good tm four-sided tape you hear that make sure you go double-sided listen essentials oh what's going on essentials make sure you've got a good vest as well fisherman vest is essential definitely is apart from that though not not so much equipment but what makes a good tour manager i know it sounds like i'm repeating but timing time is important organization making sure you're organized because you're not organized your team's not going to be organized there needs to be someone that's organized on this team ain't that right james all right ready thanks mate no bomb all right welcome to montreal canada i don't know if i'm saying it right because when they say you're afraid it's like montreal but i'm like montreal you know like oh i just hope they understand me on the mic um we're here at this festival called sonic um i got a big [ __ ] off towel in my hand and in this week's episode of moving differently we're going to talk to you about what does a tour manager do you may have heard this calling it tm stands for tour manager so what is a tour manager or a tm what the [ __ ] did they do transition yeah is um and now the spears are not working evo so they put three thousands in insane they will see the j3 000 instead but of course we know how unreliable they are so we're gonna have to have a quick no the stairs as well um they're just doing like a changeover to change out all these pets it's not ideal but i'm not about to try and play on like broken decks or something sean's up there uh new york what is it yeah they're still in the decks on one side they're like deck four plugged in through channel three in it inside all right [ __ ] ghosts how you feeling warm hot it's [ __ ] sweaty man is it windy up there or nice no sauna up there probably this is a sauna mate you're gonna sweat the [ __ ] but it's good bro i've had that new dj khaled song stuck in my head since mid staying alive since [ __ ] midnight it's just ah he [ __ ] loves it foreign it's in the future they tell me right i you stole cheese me oh with me in the way j type [ __ ] james [ __ ] give me a six foot jumps maybe seven forty two give me a seven foot john in [ __ ] sandals me i'm [ __ ] there yeah i thought i thought that happened in the subs the stars went up and when i said well the subs went off yeah when we were down there yeah i didn't know what that was done oh so the sun was actually coming out so i was like oh uh it's 502 now it's gonna take about four four five minutes to get back to the compound and we are leaving dead on 5 30. oh that's cool yeah i'm giving you enough time to sort yourself out here oh the way you were shouting i was like [ __ ] we're leaving one minute i said half past before we left that yeah so 5 30 dead on because we have a 650 check it um complete what's going on bro um basically we got ticks as we pulled up to the airport that our flight's um been flights have been cancelled on all the major airlines canada american delta trying to find alternative flights the morning flights were cancelled but the next fight we could get it's not till nine o'clock at night we have a show tomorrow in new york so um right now trying to find every possible way to get back to new york um just made a couple of phone calls as you can see i'm on my laptop trying to work it out now um but yeah as i said i've always got to be prepared always got to be prepared for something to happen it's all good man it's all part of the job get a couple of deals got one let's go all right i'm i'm going to talk to us about this now and um i'll let you know what we do okay yeah all right thanks for your drive how far is it road trip road trip we need to get a car before they all [ __ ] play um that's what those guys are doing as well so we're getting a car otherwise we're not going to make it tonight um i'm just saying we picked the perfect time to come this episode trust me so basically there are no higher cards available in the whole [ __ ] place like can you believe that i don't know well they did have one option they had a tesla available but they said with the tesla you can't do it one way higher so we would have to also return it to montreal if we hired it for module so that's not gonna work um so now we're looking at other ways we can get there where is um oh yeah you've got to get through time you can't just go straight down through vermont that's another one that's another one surely that's quicker than going through toronto yeah there's two sides with triangle richard muslims i don't know as a tm in situations like these what do you do hey i'm told i keep repeating you're gonna think this whole episode is like a repeat but you always have to be prepared for the worst what did you do to prepare for the situation got a driving license yeah yeah i was prepared i was prepared for when i was 17 years old bro what are you talking about sorry i'm still trying to work out so i'm thinking we get uber xl yeah right so we've got an uber driver who's hopefully going to take us to new york um but if it's i can't tell have a newest car if it's horrible we'll just be like oh i want to go to new york can you take us to new york yeah i'll give you cash as well as uber how much card 1000 let me think about it update so we got a thousand dollars cash i feel like a rapper start doing poses with it and we've got a nice uber driver who actually seems willing to take us look at that dog um and we've got is it this way i'm following you um door seven four seven usn and we got ourselves an uber driver who we booked him for the job and he was like yeah i'll do it but it's not worth it if i do it through the app so let's do it cash i'm like yeah okay i understand that because obviously they take a percentage off him and he's got to pay his taxes and stuff so obviously we don't endorse anyone not paying taxes but uh this guy's got to live so yeah we got cash and he's going to drive us to new york he's a bit of an adventure in it all right i'll give you 500 when we get to the end of the uber trip yeah okay and then i'll give you the other 500 when we get to new york and i'll pay for the tall as well okay okay here we [ __ ] go we are in an uber to new york from montreal canada let's [ __ ] go ash what does a tour manager do but you weren't expecting this today for the record i'm gonna show you how long this is gonna take you see that focused yeah yeah all right six hours and forty minutes six thousand kilometers here we [ __ ] go it's literally just like the front board what's going on um we just stopped for some snacks use the bathroom and we go back to the car with my man that's going to give you some of the cash now let's talk about canadian money as a queen on it oh my god right i don't know how many people know this canadian money i didn't know this canadian money has [ __ ] queen elizabeth on it all right let's go lizzy lizzy roshan hello for any tms out there what advice would you give for situations like this um just keep another head everything will work out you really would for the right price it's two in the morning we didn't even stop not once all right rashaan how you feeling transition yo good morning can't believe we actually made it back um yeah today we are playing two shows in the new york area uh one in manhattan in the afternoon and then one in new jersey at night and right now we have to go to another hotel for [ __ ] four hours of just [ __ ] but just how this [ __ ] goes let's go let's find out all these james you know how you feeling bro yeah way better now i felt like [ __ ] this morning just because of that long drive last night and then i don't know i just didn't sleep very well woke up drunk a ton of coffee didn't realize i hadn't done getting water in about 24 hours went to the gym drunk or water and now we're back vegeta has got a cool jersey from a sports shop so now i'm looking sporty and ready to go we're here in manhattan where they obviously don't maintain the roads and we are one minute away from somewhere nowhere um i'm putting a set together it's mike because i thought we were doing a pool party turns out it's not a pool party it's actually indoors and it's a sunset party kind of weird because we're going into a nightclub in the day and here it is oh there she is you're good you're going to be impatient there mate we're not even late impatience a key factor you should get it okay is uh easy hey let's go so it's like so uh uh james hype [ __ ] james hiding [ __ ] james [ __ ] we are in neptune new jersey's right yep about to play the second show today called the jersey shore yeah clubs jersey shore club's called um in the jersey shore like bully d except um i know i sound just like him um yeah so we are here head-on oasis headliner i think yeah atlanta you just shortened it he abbreviated it that's what tour manager does that's it we get everything well so basically what we went through while james was on set i was going on a back up forward with the manager of this venue right now um apparently i can't see the cdjs were actually incorrect and they had confirmed the wrong equipment for james as you're aware james uses four cdjs 2000 nexus they had nexus ones that probably ordered in some viewers legit yeah cdj 2000 nexus ones are pretty pretty [ __ ] old like probably 10 more than 10 years old yeah yeah yeah right yeah i think they came out in 2011. yeah yeah we googled it yeah but um yeah it's been results we actually pulled off and i got the official video saying everything's all done these are kind of things that happen usually they'll confirm equipment that is not actually there so you have to um no you don't have to but you just need to make sure the equipment is up to stretch and available for james to use you just talk about what you just did like before shows what do you do oh um before shows i usually go in to just check the surrounding area especially around the dj box to see the accessibility for change to come into the building basically health and safety just making sure everything's all right um just went in it is ram there's a sweat definitely going to be an epic show the decks came the cdjs but um yeah everything's working condition so yeah it's gonna be a great show are you ready for this yeah i'm ready all right let's go me so disconnected i feel it at all do you still want me can i be honest i still want your hands on my body you still make my heart beat do you still want faster kids thank you yo we are here at newark airport yeah we i'm so tired man it's so hard doing two shows in one day um so we're going to the hotel to get like one hour sleep and then we're flying to seattle it's a six hour flight so i'm gonna get to sleep on the flight uh so yeah we're gonna do the debrief in a second but it's too loud in here it's like crazy air conditioning which i'm really grateful for but maybe they need to make it quieter transition yo welcome to our beautiful hotel where we get to spend the next 2 hours and 58 minutes before our flight to seattle um what a [ __ ] day i'm absolutely exhausted the first show was absolutely fire like fire fire fire um like just the fire is fire sometimes right bro sometimes i'll forget how many iphone members there are around the world and i'll do a show like that and i'll be like oh [ __ ] like just a wild amount of high fun there was a guy there in an original social distancing social club t-shirt real hype from know how old died um amazing show we got to see the sunset on the new york skyline from the middle of manhattan so cool so i really enjoyed playing played some cool tunes um yeah it was just [ __ ] vibes it was so good they had some like weird fader caps on the mixer which were a bit annoying but proper for you bro bro you know when you're so familiar with a piece of equipment and then you touch it it doesn't feel right that's what it's like when people put those replacement fading caps on it's like not just by the pioneer ones and then that second show was just done that was wild the people were so close there's so many hype found like every time we're in new york or new jersey the amount of hype fam is just unbelievable that i think more than anywhere else in the world um so many stereo hard tops so many people like with the craziest signs so many walleyes and yeah the club's [ __ ] tight club was [ __ ] tired um it's just it just survived it literally just was just a vibe it was it's a weird club man it's a weird place like the people are amazing but then it was like they had no lighting or anything like that it was kind of delighting was just on one color and just stayed like that so it was like yeah it's going up but then the room is just like blue see it's kind of mad but the people were amazing did you see the did you see the pink flowers on the wall it was more color yeah yeah yeah i did see this pink yeah yeah you're kind of mad um so yeah all in all [ __ ] wild day here in new york and new jersey so the show in montreal um it was it was like better than i expected because roshan went to the stage like an hour and 30 minutes before my set and sent me a video and there was zero people there like the stage was just opening and then there joel cory on like 20 minutes after that and i was like yo there's no no one there like not a single person there i was like where are the people gonna come from so then we got there just before my set and there were actually people there so it was okay and then it got like really busy when i went on um which was cool uh weird thing was the stage was enormous but i wasn't in the middle of it i was like over at one side of the stage like i don't know i don't know how that happened um but it was just like the the dj thing just wasn't in the middle of the stage which is kind of annoying because i felt like i was turning to one side to look at where the crowd was and you'll probably notice that when you see the videos um the uh i um i care what you mean about i think it was more the way they structured the layout so when you see the video people on the right hand side that whole big space was just for vip which okay but it just it didn't look right do you know me yeah they didn't give you the because if you panted the left how many vip does it yeah and you pan to the left it was just like it was packed um the oh when we when we ran down to the front to see the people mate they were [ __ ] crazy like the wildest wilders fans canada undefeated of course we went down there and i was like he jumped about seven foot it was a big jump yeah yeah yeah he was taller than my man and he looked pretty tall yeah yeah um so yeah the guys had a huge banner kind of hype i'm undefeated uh and yeah when we saw them i was like yo you lot going mad but because the stage was so high i couldn't tell how energetic they were from up there so it was one of them gigs where i was a bit like i had to really focus in on the energy from the people because i wasn't feeling it necessarily because it was so far away but yeah i really enjoyed it the place was really cool canadian festivals are so different to north american festivals next yeah very relaxing we were just there like ah very relaxed ah yes chilled and even like all the backstage all the artists there is everything's just so chilled and peaceful it's like just it's just canada it's mad um so yeah i think i think that's everything about that show right yeah yeah all right [ __ ] it let's get some sleep um wallace you good yeah i'm good you look great william thanks waiting for a transition okay i see one thing you know i can actually say you've really got a while asleep that's a lie no it's not we've got 2 hours and 55 minutes don't try to make it a thing bro we've got two hours sleep it's 3 28 now yeah we're leaving at 6 20. it's not an hour a bit it's 2 hours
50. i'll i'll place a bet with anyone that can work out how long james sleeps for would it be a bit he say one hour oh man i'm having a shower and then i'll probably get out the shower and be like there's no point going to sleep the point is if i wanted to sleep for 2 hours and 50 i could good night sorry you've got six we're bored in 20 minutes you're what we're bored in 20 minutes all right it's all fights 20 7. my family is originally from six off like whoa transition today get ready for the show i'm going to talk a bit about what a tour manager does for me as well okay that one's really zoomed in so what does the tm do you take a piss out wallace for being so good no come it's not just one picture either there's a lot of pictures that happens every photo i have oh we have it's inserted yo welcome to this hotel um they don't have a room ready for us yet which is no surprise since we're here at 11am um but we were hopeful the guy said they can hopefully get a room ready for us by 12 which is pretty good so yeah we're here in seattle i think we're in like downtown seattle um and i thought i would take this opportunity to speak to you about why i needed school manager sometimes see people in the comments like i can't remember the exact word but the guy the guy basically said why does dj need to take people with intro he was like i used to be a dj i should just turn up with my records get pissed play some music and [ __ ] off why does this guy need to take a [ __ ] posse with him obviously the guy who left the comment was very old that's why he said the word posse i will explain the role for sean no i was thinking about this before saying it which is always the wise thing to do and i think the best way to sum up sean's role is with sean in doing his role allows everyone else to do their own role and nothing else roshan's being there allows me to focus on being the artist being the creator and solely doing my job to the best of my ability it also allows wallace to do his job to the best of his ability and not do anyone else's job because wallace doesn't have to worry about oh has he got permission to be on stage is he going to be fighting off another camera guy is he going to be getting moved on is it good is he going to have an issue recording the audio for the set so the ultimate thing that roshan's role does is allows everyone else to do their roles without having to juggle other things and then what do you do right before the time uh right before we set we do our regular checks do you have your usbs you got your in-ears in yeah have you got your extender for your for your inners satisfied yeah but i've got your extender yeah you've got your extender well let's have you got batteries in the zoom have you got batteries in the camera what's the zoo the zoom is a recorder that we use to record all sets for every show that we knew if you want to know which one it is it's called the zoom h6 after that we start making our way to the stage i will leave them in the wings of the stage the wings means that just just behind the stage that's basically it it's just a technical thing for at least but um put the usbs in check all levels make everything neutral in the decks that's just something i just that that's just me i just make sure everything's in a neutral position for james to come and do whatever he needs to do on stage another thing i've had as well you can't let the creative artists whoever know what's going on because you're just going to throw them off deal with it as much as you can without anything being seen or being aware of at the end of the show how do you make sure james is safe when leaving the venue when it comes to being safe or even available this all starts from the beginning i try to get security in place at the venue for them to be marked out so we can safely move james either to the green room or to actually move outside the building or the green room is where an artist will stay backstage just asking questions because sometimes we use language yeah people don't know yeah um it's just a space where an artist can sit and relax before they start their show that's what the freedom is yeah would like to add that every show is different as well like sometimes i'll be playing until the venue closes but sometimes the place will stay open after my set so it's very different if if the club closes or the the venue closes straight after my set then the lights come on and then what tends to happen is i'll hang around for 20 30 minutes wait till wait till all the real hype i'm only the real high primer there and now i'll be like right let's get some photo you love because you're like real hype there's no manual to tour managing there's no school hospital management it's very much you learn on the job or you go out your way and find a information for yourself so if someone wanted to become a tour manager and they are 18 years old and you don't really know anyone what's some advice that you give to them right now they can act on today like can we do like three tips for someone who wants to be a tour manager first things first this is what i live by and i still do it now even as where i am in my career network network network have a conversation don't be shy to ask questions you might get shut down three or four times maybe 10 times present yourself in a very valuable way and just ask questions i still ask questions to this day um a lot of people hit me up on instagram i might not get to it straight away but i still look at it and i still reply back and try help as much as i can to guide someone through how to how to become organized and keep talking right um i feel that it all starts from yourself how do you manage yourself how would you conduct your day-to-day life and how would you translate that onto multiple people on the team on keeping time and organization i i'm very much a person that keeps the calendar schedules these guys always laugh at me because i've got a tundra in my head but unreal you need to know the schedule you actually need to know exactly what you're doing you should always be two three steps ahead this is just me but i'll go to concert and watch you i know i should be watching the show i literally don't watch who is who in that area so i will watch from yeah okay so that person looks like they're doing that job that must be the tour manager this person was doing that job i must be the stage manager this person in this job um i've always done that from that when i was younger is that could you give any advice for somebody to like shadow someone or something like that if you did wanna have like a full conversation or anything just hit me up on it on socials instagram shoot me an email i i always answer a lot of people that watch me differently know that i answer the messages so hit me up if we are in your city maybe yeah you can come along i have to stress please be over 18 vote for in certain cities just over 21 please please i know it sounds mad but we don't want anyone getting in trouble but um yeah hit me up on socials um send me a message send me a dm and i will get to you i'm not knowing you i will get to your message somebody give me a tm transition it's probably a 2v thing in it let's go back to the bag i can't even hear it thank you for introducing me like opening my eyes anyway here we go no you got the wrong one here we here we here we [ __ ] go doing a little makeup session here for missing um we got the mic ready it's live so i just need to be careful with anyone here in conversation um we have five minutes exactly to show time i'm just back you can't find me until show time and yeah it's gonna be a madness oh yes love you oh j [ __ ] james hype [ __ ] james heights [ __ ] james hype [ __ ] james heights [ __ ] james hype [ __ ] james hype [ __ ] let's get down oh okay it's uncomfortable we started dancing together crazy yes oh go out can i be honest i still want your hands up on my body this woman oh you still make my heartbeat oh james hype [ __ ] james hype [ __ ] james hype [ __ ] james hype [ __ ] amazon six six six i can't believe i'm on the floor by a portable toilet wicked wicked wicked wild wild wallace www.wildworldwallace.web
um have you got that yet what the domain yeah in the works yeah um so we just came offstage at that show did you capture on camera when there's just all the js up in the crowd multiple times yeah yeah so yeah that was a crazy crazy crowd seattle undefeated legit like proper there's so many stereo shirts um real real hype planned in there but it wasn't so many it was a scene a series yeah it was it was so legit um i i really enjoyed it i like playing daytime stuff i couldn't see the cdjs i knew that was good that's a [ __ ] thing mate couldn't even see the mixtape it was because we had like direct sunlight on the decks which could be really difficult um but yeah i'm kind of used to it this time of year you know um yeah i played kind of a different set because i was taking it a bit easy to start because it was uh sunshine daytime you know 4 p.m set time so i didn't want to start slamming it out i knew i was on after anna luna as well and i wasn't super sure what type of stuff she was going to play so i was like well if i just started with some sunshine vibes you can't really go wrong with sunshine vibes in the sunshine that's what i've been saying so um yeah i think it set on well um uh yeah not much else to say it was it was a cool little setup it was like a mini festival yeah it really was it was a proper yeah i really liked how the whole thing was out but in terms of the staging everyone could see you i feel like i feel good the stage was really nice like this it's hard to get the stage right for a dj because sometimes you'll be on a huge stage and you're just a little dj with four decks you don't need to run around or any of that stuff so you don't really need a big stage sometimes and sometimes when they put the stage in place it's like they almost design the stage for a rapper or a singer and the dj is just like at the back and it's really awkward when it's like that but this stage was designed perfectly for djs and i think you were at the right level like in terms of height yes between the crowd and yourself so you got to see and was engaged with them yeah yeah yeah connected to them you were vibing with them yeah you could make eye contact with the program really actually like we've done some festivals in the past couple of weeks where you can't even see the front row you're gonna be like are you all right you know so it's that was nice yeah it was yeah how did you find it from a tour management perspective um there was a lot of technical stuff that was going on behind the scenes as i've explained before they start with the sounds that was projected out to the crowd wasn't loud enough that happened in the first 10 minutes so i had to get that turned up um the monitors and valves for james they didn't have the right facilities to contact uh the front house which front house is where the main sound comes from the main mixing desk i had to run basically around the festival to the sound desk to tell them to turn it turn it up and run guy was sleeping he was asleep so yeah so the man who was in charge of sorting things out around the stage was asleep yep okay it's a new one yeah not seen that before but i can also witness i saw a man lying down next to the stage yep i also witnessed this yeah so whoever you are from seattle really it's not going to visit me a lot of people paid a lot of money for tickets to that festival people have traveled people saved up their money and they've been looking forward to it and you are there asleep on the job when you have one job to make it look and sound good yeah fine so i don't even care who you are just don't fall asleep on the job yeah there's a lot of cardio for that one cast oh i i kind of judged how far it was like i've got this it's half a mile i stole it i started going i was like i've got battle three people let's go and it goes up hill as well but um yeah we've got the job done you said it wasn't right it didn't feel loud so when i first stepped out i was like okay it doesn't feel loud but i thought well it must be loud for the people out there it's just for me it's not very loud and the monitor stacks they were quite far out so i was like can we bring them in yeah we brought the monitors in closer to me got a bit louder and i was just i'm not feeling the volume of it and i just thought oh we got to turn the monitors up but after the set rash said he thought it wasn't hard enough overall so he had to ask the guys to turn it up for the people as well so i don't know what they were doing there maybe they got sound restrictions on the venue or something i don't know maybe maybe the mom's asleep well these are the questions as i told man these are questions i asked i asked is there a db meaning that decibel has to be a certain how does the sound have to be a certain level is there a cut-off point where as loud as it can be these are actual questions that i asked which i said before but these are questions i asked when i'm there um when it comes to like ask liaisons tech stage managers if i have the time to meet them in advance and the answers were no there's only one question that i ever asked and that's who does this and that leads us nicely to the end of this episode is there anything else we need to cover onto our management i think we think we i think we've covered quite quite well yeah i think we did well all right so from the briefing room this is james hype i'm russian k wallace signing out go and watch my tomorrowland set who does i'm i don't care rich they do i don't care
