MACAU | You Won't Believe This Is CHINA!

Show Video

hello everyone here from macau in China  we arrived here 2 days ago from Beijing and this   is actually an autonomous region of China so  it's one of the regions that is under the one   country China but two completely different  systems and that's mainly because here has   a completely different history to the majority  of China and the main reason for that is because   it was a colony of Portugal for around 442  years years that long so dating back to 1557   until recently 1999 this was ruled by Portugal and  it's actually the first and last European colony   in Asia so making it the longest colony in Asia  and things are run completely different here so   there's no internet restrictions we can access  everything like Facebook YouTube Google things   that we couldn't really access without a VPN in  uh Beijing and also here I get 6 months on my UK   passport I'm allowed to stay here for 6 months  a long time on the mainland on arrival I could   only get like 6 days but I think yours is a bit  less than mine yeah uh I think 3 months which is   already a lot but that's weird because I'm from  Brazil so it was also a like a Portuguese Colony   so I thought I would get or the same as you or  maybe more but it's less days than you yeah I   get double for some reason yeah but uh as you were  saying that differences between here and Mainland   China there's also the currency that's different  it's not the same we thought it would be the same   but it's not here is the pataka yeah Paka which I  think is the same currency as when it was ruled by   the Portuguese yeah it it sounds like a Portuguese  name Maan Paka and here is also mainly known   for its casinos that you can probably see in the  background there so we'll be checking that out and   you're going to see a lot of Portuguese buildings  we can already see an old Portuguese Church there   but first we're going to start off here at the  maau tower which is the highest views of maau   should should be able to see the Hall of maau It's  a small [Music] place so had zero cues whatsoever   so we got up straight away we actually played  99 per person which I think is around $25 but we   just realized that on the website cluke you could  get it for around $18 per person so a lot cheaper   and we'll leave that link below cuz we should  have done that should have checked that first   but definitely getting some amazing views from up  here so that was the casino area over there and   after the tower we're going to be walking around  this part which I think is the more historic   Portuguese side like a lot of the towers that we  go to you have the transparent floor pretty scary   wo I don't like like it I don't care you can walk  on it not me so from this side you can see that   land over there that is no longer maau so we're  not allowed to go there so so close too but this   part of maau here is connected to the mainland  down there somewhere but you'd have to go through   like border control check the difference in the  watercolor like a lake on the right side [Music] so this side over here is also maau we're actually  staying on this land so that is a separate island   called typa not sure if that's how you pronounce  it we're just staying right here very close so   right now we just got a taxi across this bridge  and yeah that isn't maau once again that's like   the mainland China where is Hong Kong I think  uh to the other side on on that side yeah yeah   I don't know if we can see it it's very like hazy  today very cloudy maybe you can see it sometimes   yeah look you can also do bungee jumping from the  top of the tower definitely won't be doing that   you no no thanks yeah so we just checked on the  map and Hong Kong is over there there is a bridge   we can just about make out that goes there I think  a lot of people just get the ferry across and I   think it's quite simple to get in into Hong Kong  it's also um under a different system like maau   so you can easily travel there from here so we  just noticed that the TV shows here the guy that's   going to bungee jump I think he's going to come  down here try and film it oh he's going [Music] [Music]   wa [Music]   so we ended up just getting a bus it was only a  quick ride like 4 minutes but yeah we didn't want   to walk it's so damn humid here I didn't mention  like super humid feels like uh Singapore the bus   was six patakas per person and now we're going to  be exploring more of the Portuguese side so kind   of bizarre that there has a completely different  system to here and we so so close so one of the   things that have shocked us the most in maau is  the the signs that we see most of the times uh   everything written in Chinese and also Portuguese  and not even English just Portuguese and Chinese   so that's very unusual and especially for us  that we are Brazilian and English CH is English   Brazilian so we speak Portuguese and now here in  the like in Asia and we see Portuguese everywhere   it's really crazy yeah so this building here I  don't know if it's a Portuguese one kind of looks   a bit Portuguese but also the tiles look a bit  Chinese style it's all in Portuguese go the maau government like a museum then and then you can  also find Portuguese food paladis portugueses   we'll probably be eating Portuguese food  later on and I think the temple that we   want to go to amama Temple is right around  here yeah it seems like a show is going on theat the show [Music] so that was a cool little unexpected show yeah  we couldn't understand what they were talking   but it was still nice yeah so now we'll  go in the main temple amama temple this   is supposed to be one of the oldest in maau  I think from 1488 so before the Portuguese   arrived W looks really cool on the outside  that was the room that we just watched loed [Music] into so we mentioned about the  translations in Portuguese but from what   I read only about 2 or 3% of the population  speak Portuguese and over here they speak   canones not Mandarin here in Hong Kong  speak canones so I think the majority of   the Mainland speak Mandarin so we didn't have  to pay anything to come in here that theater   show was also for free they were inviting  us like come come yeah at first we thought   we weren't allowed in right we thought we  needed a ticket but they told us to go in [Music] [Music]   got some sort of church image Portuguese church  we'll be seeing that soon so an interesting fact   apparently maau was named after that Temple  so when the Portuguese arrived they asked the   locals what this place place was called and the  locals thought they were asking what the temple   was called and I think they said something like am  magok and the Portuguese understood maau somehow   and then they just not named the entire place  maau ever since I saw a picture of this too   I think this is the moish barracks moish is more  like a Islamic Moroccan kind of architecture that   you would have found in Portugal and Spain when  they uh when they conquered that region and they   decided to make a build in that style here so  this is kind of how I imagine Hong Kong looking   like in the pictures that I've seen of Hong Kong  in the past these old apartment blocks yeah so the   translations really are all in Portuguese and  Cantonese quos morus that's what I was saying   the the moish barracks it seems like it was  for a regiment from Goa Indian to stay since   Portugal also colonized Goa I remember seeing  Portuguese buildings there when we went to go or [Music] to all right so now we're getting into the  Portuguese part and it is definitely looking   very Portuguese already yeah this was one of  the squares that we wanted to come to called   L looks like they're doing some construction  of some sort don't if you can go in there but   yeah it's surrounded by the old Portuguese  buildings a lot of the Portuguese buildings   here are from the 1600s 1700s we're now in  Portugal yeah my brain is like very confused   so here we have a church IG s Lorenzo  originally from the 1500s but I think   the majority of the building that you see now  is from the 1800s this time you also got the   English translation so Ren renovated five  times 1618 1768 1846 1898 and 2006 [Music] [Music] so now we're at a theater called called theatro  Don Pedro Quinto so that is supposed to be the   first western style theater in China from  1860 it's closed at the moment they have   like uh Portuguese music shows here F which  we watched in lesban once they still have   those shows not sure what this building is I  think it's another church the sign back there   said it's only closed on tu Tuesdays which is  today a ah this was founded by Spanish priests   in 1591 Carol how are we in China right now  yeah when I saw the F thing I was like it's   so confusing cuz sometimes it looks like  Brazil but sometimes it doesn't it's just   very confusing and the designs kopa Cabana yeah  the same type of Portuguese stones that they call but yeah we say it's uh like confusing but it's  really interesting for us like I think um maybe   more than for just no no other European European  tourists but for us it's even cooler yeah okay   it's a big part of our culture in Brazil also this  and the fact that it just looks completely like   Portugal and Brazil is amazing so in kop Cabana we  have the waves like this it's like the same design [Music] so now we just looking for a place to eat  I think Carol found a a good place for us   oh lots of sweets think I saw that in Beijing also  the same thing this one I think it's a walking   street I'm quite surprised by how quiet everything  is though there's like nobody around everywhere   we go so we found our Portuguese restaurant  it's called Gallo which is like a rooster the   symbol of Portugal night since 1987 so they have  all the famous Portuguese dishes the fish Sagi   sardines 80 D I eat that a lot in the in the  alav that's 135 I think I'm going to go for   the poto the pig 165 so we also went for  the famous B which we have in Portugal and   Brazil codfish yeah in Portugal they call pel  P in Brazil we say and we also even got some   little black olives there which I love and  they brought bread just like in Portugal so   I think that was 55 mhm pakas so good and this  one as you can see comes with a a lot of cheese   inside which makes it even better so I went for  the bakala brass which is a dish with a balau   codfish same fish yeah and then U some like  very thin fried potatoes and also onion like   fried onion it's one of my favorite bakalo dishes  so my food has arrived now so it's the pork got   some more olives in the salad and this is like  a mashed potato I think never had it like that   before yeah in Portugal they have really good  meat and fish dishes always delicious [Music] so we are now going to lagod senado which one of  the most popular squares here and just look look   at this doesn't get much more European looking  than this yeah I think this is the one that we   saw in the pictures yeah wow it's like Lisbon  almost yeah it is like Lisbon really big Square   so before we came to maau I was under the  impression that it was just like one little   section that looked Portuguese but it is kind of  scattered around I mean this definitely is like   the main area but even on the island that we're  on which is completely separate there's also some   Portuguese buildings around there settlements  so in the videos in Japan I mentioned about the   series shun which is about the Japanese but it  does show the Portuguese in that series and it   mentions Mac out so this is where they were  this was their trading post I'm pretty sure   that the Chinese that visit here must think that  this is crazy having a place like this [Music] so initially the Portuguese actually leased  maau for three centuries for around 300 years   it was only after the Opium Wars in the 1800s  that the Chinese lost and then they had to give   the territory to Portugal not a lease anymore  yet again another church there are many many   many churches that you can visit we're not  going to be a visiting the more this looks   a bit different maybe a bit of a Chinese mix  yeah so this part is getting way more packed   now I also read that this is is apparently the  most densely populated region in the world maau   680,000 people live here in just a very small  area and the reason that it's specifically so   busy at this part is because of the ruins of  St Paul that's like one of the landmarks of   Mao so you can walk all the way up to it at  the top you got the old Cobble streets here   kind of funny that this place is so much busier  than the the other attractions yeah I'm guessing   that all the tourists that come here they just  come to this area of the the town or city but uh   but it's it was not so far from where we were  before and it was super empty over there so I   don't know why they're just like a 6 s minute  walk and it's like this so this building was   originally from the 1600s but there was a fire  in 1835 that burnt the majority of it down and   only the front remains somehow we can actually  see that casino building from our hotel yeah I   think you can see it from pretty much everywhere  in maau since it's so big so big and so unusual so   it looks like they have the original base like the  foundations it says tombs oh these are tombs then   yeah yeah number one got some of the old pictures  1970s wasn't as busy back then 1875 the Temple of   NAA from 1888 guess that's this one seems to  be closed here you also have the original City   walls from the 16th and 17th centuries Still  Standing you just passed the W and everything   becomes completely empty all of a sudden I think  it's just a local neighborhood no more people [Music] [Music] yeah so we've now entered a fort that was  right now next to the ruin back there and this is   from 1625 still looks like it's in pretty good  shape can see all the Cannons just passed one   down there too so I think there's a few Portuguese  forts in maau there's one on our Island too forch   so they began constructing it in 1617 I guess  it was just completed in 1626 it was the main   military structure of the city this one and  this cannon is aiming straight for that hotel   that we were pointing out taking the hotel out  yeah it's weird at a weird position that's a   perfect shot right there this looks like a  a ship Mast I think it is another one lined   up to take out the hotel Carol have you  noticed that every single one's lined up   to take out the hotel look at that one yeah  we not those ones yeah not these ones yeah   definitely a great place to come just for the  The View that was the ruin down there [Music] [Music] so from up here you can definitely get  more of an idea of how there's 680,000   people live in here it's just apartment after  apartment block super high as well so crammed   together yeah even in the area that we are  the other side of the the bridge there are   many highrise buildings like this all together  it's a bit more spread out than on this side   though yeah I think so this one also this  side also looks uh older like you said [Music] [Music] [Music]   so we've now come across yet another very  Portuguese looking Square this one's not   so touristy even though it's still full of  the the old buildings these are probably   some of the coolest looking buildings that  we've we've seen so far back there it says   that it's a hospital I don't know if it's the  entire building block really cool mixture of   colors though I think the windows seem to look  a bit more Chinese yeah how made this my surname   oh yeah that's Carol's surname Al Kaz Jim kind  of like a a library I guess bit different yeah   Lit Literature house something like that yeah  Library would be bibla in Portuguese [Music] [Music] so we've now come to the casino Zone this  this was that mega hotel that we could see   before that's going to get taken out by  the Cannons one day there's even a fort   here right in the middle of the casino  part so I think all these buildings are casinos yeah that building looks even  crazier from the back I wonder if those   are all rooms that stick out so  that hotel casino is called Grand   Lisboa Grand Lisbon got another one back there  Casino lisbo yeah so we'll be showing our hotel   later on in the video nothing spectacular like  these though no yeah this area is crazy really I   think all of these hotels are like casinos as well  not just simple hotels you got the MGM over there   which I think you get that in us and throughout  the world right so that is why this place is known   as the Vegas of the East it is the nickname  and funnily enough gambling is actually illegal   in China but not maau that might be one of the  reasons why they keep it under a different system   so that they can have all the the casinos here  the rich Chinese playground so maau is actually   considered to be one of the richest regions  in the world one of the highest gdps too in   the world I think their salaries here are really  high and unemployment is supposed to be almost   zero so yeah the quality of life is supposed to  be really good from what I've been reading [Music]   so we are now back on the island that we're  staying on of TAA and we come to a place called   the cotai strip and straight away it's quite  clear what this is based on yeah what we mean   FRS or Vegas no I meant Vegas yeah but yeah like  uh Vegas also I think has the Eiffel Tower things   like that the mega hotels so we actually thought  that all the casino places were on the other side   that we explored today yeah yeah we didn't know we  thought our our Island was like the quieter Island   but no we also have this here yeah so it really is  just like the Las Vegas Strip you can walk all the   way down and it'll just be a casino after Casino  so that one back there is called the parisan and   then over here there's one called The Londoner  that we're going to check out now that's like the   house of parliament yeah yeah I think there's like  a Harry Potter exhibition I wish I knew it sooner   because I I'll would probably go but I think you  need to reserve tickets so we won't be going so   another interesting fact that I read about is that  the island that we're on now before it used to be   two separate islands and then they basically  filled in the space between with land which   is where we are right now Cai so a few decades ago  this never exist Cai the strip so they just filled   in the land I guess to make all these hotels  and casinos and that is definitely a Big Ben   it almost looks the same size as the real  thing Carol maybe it is we saw it kind of   recently yeah yeah yeah it did look about  that size and then I think we're going to   go in this one afterwards the Venetian  probably get a bite to eat man they even   got like a a London Underground going on what  the hell and the classic foam boxes obviously   the king cross train station we've been there  busy yeah everybody wants the pictures cuz   this view is really good yeah I think this  is like the one of the best views of the shrip oh nice you even got Abby Road The Beatles  yes I think the majority are like malls too yeah   they're all the the most like luxurious Brands  and very expensive Brands too and yeah we hope   to find a restaurant but maybe it will be other  fancy restaurants yeah we don't want to spend   like a fortune that Portuguese meal overall  was like $60 for a pretty simple meal even   the elevator looks kind of old school looks like  one of those old metal ones yeah what a bizarre   place it's basically China Portugal and Las Vegas  mixed together yeah it's a very unique and unusual   uh area of the world we've never seen anything  like this [Music] before all right we are in   Venice [Music] now that's cool look at the ceiling  we're outdoors I remember we went to the Venetian   in Vegas yeah in Vegas and we went to a a shopping  mall in the Philippines in BJC that was also like   this kind of similar yeah I think they have the  canals too so I think the Venetian is just like   a hotel Branch it's funny cuz we' just been  watching a series called Ripley on Netflix we   actually watched the last one yesterday and that's  set in Venice so the series kind of looks like this got the the gondolas that's a pretty  fancy looking Gondola too mhm I think you   can go on a ride in there maybe we'll  see someone soon it's like a Venetian   opera house yeah sounds like one yeah they got  the opera music going on wow look at that the artwork fancy fountain oh look  at the the hallway too [Music] so that's going to be it here from maau the  hotel that we've been staying at is called   Regency and it's around $102 a night really big  room also has a pretty big swimming pool and   a really nice gym too and the breakfast is also  good here we checked the price of rooms at that   Venetian place the fancy looking hotel and it's  around $160 but there are cheaper options too I   thought it'd be a lot lot more there but yeah it's  not that much more and we're about to head to the   airport now cuz we're going to be going to  Shanghai and that'll be the last stop for us   on this China trip going to be spending  4 days in total in Shanghai so that's   what's coming up if you like this video just  drop a like as usual to support us subscribe   to see more follow us on Instagram and  we'll see you in the next one [Music] so [Music]
