It's pretty epic looking statue, isn't it? Dramatic, dramatic, huh? Wow, and they have kinmokuse in the park. I can smell it, I can smell it. Smells so good. Oh, there they are over there. Uh, had to stop by.

Here we are at the 518 Memorial Park. I mentioned this in one of my earlier videos.  But when I was learning up on uh Korean  history, one of the most surprising things   that I learned was that South Korea also  had to deal with dictators and people who   wanted to rule the country as an autocrat  and uh kind of rule with an iron Fist. And so it wasn't until 1980 March 18th  when there was an uprising here and   Gwangju that kind of took South Korea in a  different path and a different trajectory.  and let South Korea to a more open and free democracy one that it enjoys today the third president the one that caused all this Uprising  here in Gwangju, he ended up changing   the Constitution and making it where he could essentially rule indefinitely in South Korea.

And so towards the end there in like 1979, uh  they established martial law which students were   banned from going to school, um I mean a lot of things were banned here, free speech and whatnot.  And so there was the uprising here, and  this is the uh the city that kind of uh   led the way to South Korea becoming the free and more open democracy that it is today. And so I mean you, you know just uh two  seconds ago on the corner over there,   there was a a lady over there with their sign  yelling and shouting whatever she wanted to say.  And now in South Korea they have a constitution that protects free speech and things like that.  And so you go to the National war memorial and Seoul and pretty much every weekend you'll see   somebody, a group out there protesting  and doing something out there speaking   their mind and uh getting whatever point across they want out to for people to to uh to hear. And so it wasn't always like that, you know you look at Korea today   and if you don't know that kind of stuff. And especially with North Korea just right

on the other side, one of the most suppressed and uh you know it's North Korea, they have the   uh it's the most isolated country on the in the  world and uh there people there have zero rights.  And so uh it's easy to think that South Korea has always been like this.  And let's go check out this real quick, looks like it goes anything down there. Yeah, so maybe the victims from the 10 day Revolt here that. [Applause] I was looking at videos online, I mean it wasn't that long ago, it was it was a 1980.  And so still uh very much fresh on the  minds of many many people here in Korea.

Wow,   smells so good here, let me go show you what they look like again. I love these oh my gosh smells so good, so when I lived in Japan for 11 years,   nine of those years were in Gunma right outside my bedroom window, I had a huge kinmoksei tree,   it was in my neighbor's yard, but every year it  would it was huge, it would blossom and bloom, and   the scent would just come into my house every day.And it was you know it's fall, it's it's Autumn,   the air feels light, it feels good, you have the windows open,   and this is just very nostalgic for me. They're almost done, unfortunately they're   about to fall off, see all you have to do is barely touch them and they they come off.

Alrighty, it's a beautiful day here in Gwangju,  we're just going to get back on the bike course   and keep heading kind of North Northeast. And then we're going to go to the dam today,   and then from there that's where the bike course ends, we're going to have to shoot through the   mountains a little bit, maybe do a climb either do that tomorrow or at the end of the day,   but we'll see how we feel, it's only like 40 km  to the dam, we should be able to hit that today.  But after yesterday's 100 km day we're moving a little slow today. just like every Big City in uh Korea it's pretty hard to get out or it's   pretty difficult cycling through the city, a  lot of traffic, sometimes you find yourself   in places like this, and uh just got to walk the  bike down, luckily there's a a ramp right here. make work for it, that's what's tough about the city,   they make you work for for a lot of traffic. But luckily here in Gwangju, it looks like it's

pretty flat, Seoul, Deagu Busan they're so hilly, this does not look too bad,   let me show you yeah it's obviously  a very very very slight incline,   but not too bad, we got this is this bike yep did it we did it. All right give me one second woo we made it  to the bike horse something yeah right lovely. Come on put one in play, Let's see it nice oh can the short stop get it   oh bad bad throw bad throw a little wild there everybody laughing at him. Oh yeah yeah okay now that's a plane, I saw that uh that remote control plane up there and I   was thinking go surely nobody's like flying that. Thought maybe it was there was a pilot in there,   it's like it's just wobbling up and down. But no it's it's a it's an RC, they're out   here flying it, but from a distance it almost looks like a real plane.

Okay looks like they're having some trouble Landing it here,   they keep looping back and forth yeah. Okay expensive like over $10,000. $10,000 wow what is average uh average is uh   uh 1,000 about a thousand all  right, six points. Wow crazy from a distance it almost looks like a real plane,   we thought it was a real Yeah we actually  did, we're like I don't want to be in   one of those it looks really wobbly and you you know flying all over the place. But and then you see this one you're like   it's not that small no it's it's  actually it's pretty good size. Beautiful lovely man, we just have a great day today, there's really not much else to say,   yesterday was really windy, we were fighting  all day yesterday, but we were huffing it.

And uh today nice and chill, beautiful little  Pond here people out fishing oh this is nice,   got the mountains off in the background,  blue sky, what more could you ask for. So this is fun we just rolled into a small little  town here, wasn't really expecting much any.  And uh looks like we just rolled  up on a little market here,   up here they're selling ducks and chickens  and all kinds of stuff that I haven't really   seen much of in Korea, it reminds me  of the southeast Asia thing right here.

Like right over here we got some swans some chickens on. Wow nice we have our little look like  we have a little Farmers Market here,   you get some apples some pear some persimmons  cooking up some fried stuff over here,   of course fried stuff always  smells good some chestnuts onions. Some grains those look interesting might have to get ourselves some no more fried chicken   that's for sure look at this. these fish have  seen better days. yeah these aren't righted out   the ocean for sure all different kinds of herbs spinach Rosemary ready to take home and mhm pork   that's a lot that's That's Heavy how much is  this one uh 25 yeah this one eighty I see okay   bean sprouts. hey your time it's your turn  man want to try one. got a they have some all the   seafood out here too you wouldn't think so yeah  doesn't look that fresh no and it's not even like   on Ice. a little bit ice in there. some orang how much? how much um M man Manu so 10,000 I think   yeah that's um that's kind of what they were on  Jeju as well yeah maybe oh [Music]    I don't know what you said here yeah I got 10 it's four you'll  probably eat more don't worry about it yeah    I'm definitely going to eat more than you yeah you TR  down like business yeah I love these things grapes are expensive M baby crabs yeah crab and that  crunchy tasty it is very tasty yeah did you make it?   no Mom your mama made it mom so many different  varieties travel we're traveling by bicycle    what do you think that is? not fin is it could be a fin  it looks like a fin it looks like a fin think it's   a shark fin I don't know do you know what this  is very unexpected surprise here another Market   there looks like it I mean this this little  town is bustling what are we filming up here.

Man this might be one of the most beautiful  stretches I've been on on this entire trip   not even kidding it's are really nice out  here you sure that's the real one yeah   yeah okay 100% that one's not wobbling  up there swaying back and forth yeah   okay still though I wouldn't be comfortable in it  the damyang airport people out here driving some   really nice cars of Rolls Royce woo look at that now these are some real planes single propeller. All right we have made it to the very  end apparently there's a dam up here   I'll the dam is still one kilometer  away but I guess this is the uh kind   of the checkpoint area then uh from here  woohoo all the way up from here we get it   work it work it's been beautiful  out here though it's really nice. That's pretty cool welcome to damyang Ho  what a sight this route from Gwangju has   just been amazing smoking a Siggy [ __ ]  got to got to [ __ ] climb a mountain mate let's [ __ ] go. this is beautiful man this is stunning gorgeous throw in any word there nice and windy road better than Jeju better than Jeju yeah seriously it is   yeah I know beautiful. it's made from  um the broken pots from the soybeans. Wow all right where are we going we going right going right. oh man wow oh man we just came from   down there yep got a work for that one mhm  we out here got a nice bridge over the river right here one of the places I have saved come check out wow there's a walking   path that goes all the way around too you see that I don't think we want to do that though   n nuh n Save the energy for the bike save the  energy for the uh the hill that we're about to climb man this could be a good place to call it a night too man. there's a lot of

stuff built up out here isn't there  yeah look like a rentals maybe uh-huh. [Applause]   that's pretty fun little Bike Shop different  bike though. losing sunlight but that's okay   we have almost made it to the top of uh the big hill the summit and then we   have like a little bowl or up High pretty  for a while and then it's all downhill.  But I think we're going to try to find a place somewhere inside the bowl camp out maybe do a campfire or something would be nice.

Man it says climbing lane end good. cause I'm tired  of climbing. man, my thighs are burning oh man   got some wobbly noodly legs right now that's for sure we made it so these oranges have been kind of Hit or Miss first one I had good  not that good yeah not that impressive the second one had even less flavor although I think  we got a bad Bunch. but I've had a few good   ones didn't realize you took the camera there a  good one nice and sweet got some sourness to it   lot of chili growing up here [ __ ] I don't think  this place is open no God damn it God damn it oh   that looks so good though not definitely  not well on to the next one there's a yeah yeah   they're playing some music for us let's go uh maybe see if they're open over here okay. All right we found a place that's open I think  the only thing that's open what do they got here?  so we're going to do the duck mushroom bulgogi. hopefully there's not too many mushrooms

I can't do mushrooms I can't do a whole lot of them at least that's interesting I have no idea   is it hot M what is this, soup. okay  pumpkin I think it might be yeah that's   squash. you are soaked yeah that hill killed  him. killed me too I'm pretty prettyy sweaty   too but going downhill is uh get cold really  quickly so hot soup is going to be so good   we won't know until I upload this video  what do you think carrot or pumpkin?
