ENGLAND'S MOST CHARMING Village at CHRISTMAS Time
[Music] This weekend we are in Haworth in West Yorkshire which is one of the most magical and prettiest little villages in England. Yes and it's also famous for the Brontë family - yes - who lived in the parsonage just at the top of the village. It's a very very special place and we came here to capture the atmosphere - yeah - and - to get a bit in a Christmas mood. Yes. We thought it would be the perfect place so we hope you will enjoy it. Our first stop was the Brontë parsonage where the Brontës moved in 1820 and where Charlotte, Emily and Anne wrote their greatest novels. Sadly filming isn't allowed but we can really recommend a visit because you
can find the world's largest collection of Brontës furniture, clothes and personal possessions there. [Music] So next to the parsonage is the Old School Room and Emily, Anne, well, all of them, Anne, Branwell, Charlotte all of them taught here and it was built by by Patrick Brontë. And also it says here Charlotte's wedding reception was here as well in 1854. Usually you could go inside and have a look around but there's a craft fair inside so it's pretty busy. [Music]
In front of me you can see the parsonage behind the trees and right next to it is the cemetery which is so special. It almost looks unreal as you can see. Well, of course nowadays we tend to romanticise things because as gorgeous as this church graveyard appears nowadays it does have a tragic story because back in the day during the Brontë period there was hardly any sanitation. It was a very polluted place because it was very industrial. And it is also believed that the drinking water was contaminated by rainwater because it had soaked through the church graveyard and the life expectancy here in Haworth was only 24 years of age. [Music] This is St Michael and all Angels Church where Patrick Brontë was curate for more than 40 years. [Music] Okay, let's go into the church.
[Music] We are now in a tea room which is the Apothecary Tea room actually. So there you have the name. The Apothecary Tea Rooms and and Jörg, what did you order? A double decker. A double decker. Bacon and egg double decker. Amazing. I ordered the fresh sandwich with tuna mayonnaise. This is from Churchill. I need to show you. It's very pretty. We do have some Churchill plates at home
and they have a factory shop in Stoke-on-Trent of course. So this is your so-called - double decker. Double decker. Yeah, it's got two decks. One with an egg. Oh wow. And the other one with bacon. Wow. You've never had that one before. Yeah. Enjoy. But yours looks good. Yes. This is mine which looks good as well.
[Music] This here is the Fleece Inn where we're going to have dinner tonight and it was originally a coaching inn and as you can see it's here on the Main Street. I love this place so much. It's honestly magical. Yes and I can't wait until it gets dark. Yes because everything is prepared for Christmas. Yes. So many Christmas decorations. We didn't expect it. Yeah and I think
it will be just magical. We're really getting into the mood. The only thing it's so busy - yeah - because last time I don't know do you think it was a weekday when we - yeah it was a weekday and it was cold so nobody was out. Yes probably but it's still I mean it doesn't take away from the beauty. No. This is such a special place so yeah, I think if you love everything quintessentially English this is your place to go. Yeah. This is Haworth Old Hall and it's one of the oldest buildings here in the village dating back to 1621. [Music] We are now at Haworth railway station. Yeah. Did you see I think there is a train
coming but just a regular one. Did you see the the other trains that they have planned for Christmas? Yeah. We should do that. Well, we're we're not here when it starts. Yeah. So one is called Elf Express. Elf Express yeah. And the other one A Christmas Carol. There's a train coming. Yeah. There's a train coming. Yeah and it's a steam engine. It is
a steam engine. As I said. How lucky are we? I can't believe it! Oh my gosh. We are so lucky. I can't believe it. I I honestly can't believe our luck. Yeah. We waited here for 5 minutes - yes - and then we had a steam engine. Yeah. So we paid if you're not traveling and just
want to visit the platform. 1 Pound to get to the platform. Per person. Yeah. But it's worth it. Definitely. Today it was worth it. I think I mean some of you might get the impression this is the regular way to travel - yes - in the UK - yeah - because I did check the timetable and I I think I saw just a regular train. How great. I'm not sure. That was so great. But we were lucky, I mean I looked at the time table at home. You did? No, I didn't. I even wasn't aware that they've got a train station here. What? Yeah. I wrote it down. Well, I mean Jörg didn't have time to do the planning. So it was just luck and instinct. Yes. I think I mean the the Victorian
train station and then the steam engine. Yeah. It's gorgeous. It's so fun. [Music] Now this place is called The Snug on the Cobbles and you can stay there. It's a one bed boutique style cottage, sleeps four people and it's decorated for Christmas. It looks very festive. Ye Sleeping House Bed and
Breakfast. There are a lot of places here on on Main Street. There's another place bar and rooms called The Registry and I tried to book it but it was, well, they didn't have any vacancies. We had to come back to this place and I think we will also visit in 2 hours time when it's very dark. To me this is like a time capsule. I don't think that it changed that much. We have visited many
churchyards in the UK. This one is like another level. It looks unreal. We just stumbled upon this gravestone - and to me it tells a, yeah tragedy. Yes, yes. It's tragic yeah because if you're look into it. Elizabeth. It says memory of Elizabeth who was 6 years old - yes - then of a Mary who was 2 years old - yes - then of a Sarah just 24 years old - yes - Emma - Emma she was - who was 21 and that - then Joshua who was 24. And that was in 1888. So they all died young. The oldest is 24. Yeah. That's a tragedy. It really is. It really really is. It makes me so sad. Yeah. That makes you feel sad. But I must say that the gravestones are gorgeous. Yeah. And
you can still read them and that's yeah, they do tell a story. Yeah, they tell tragedies. [Music] This is my favourite spot. I think because it feels so unchanged and also because Main Street is around the corner, it's so busy and here it's so quiet. It feels as if you can just sit down and breathe. It's wonderful. I remember so well when we came here 5 years ago how much I loved Haworth. And then all the leaves and they keep them there. Very natural. I think you can also book someone is
walking up there or running, you can book spooky tours. I think I would be so scared. [Music] Okay, we have arrived at our accommodation. It's called Weavers of Haworth. Yeah, something like that. Yes. Jörg? Yeah. Have we fallen out because - yeah we have - we have - just for tonight. We have a twin bedroom. Yeah. Basically because we decided only four five days ago to come here - yeah - and that was the only room we could get but it's absolutely fine, isn't it? It's really good. It's cosy. Yeah. So this is room number 5 and it has a moor view. Well, it's getting dark,
you can't really see it. And we are next to the parsonage. Yeah. It's good. It's really good for something that we found last minutes. Yeah, it's a 2 minutes walk to a parsonage. Jörg wants to take a nap - yeah - before we go to dinner so - because it's very cosy and I'm tired. We do have a tea and coffee station. Look this is funny. Our our wardrobe behind glass. Well, we don't have much stuff anyway for one night and this is the bathroom. It's lovely. It looks nice. Do you want a cup of tea? No. I do. I do. I think. I'm tired. Jörg prefers a nap and I, well,
do they have tea bags? Oh yeah. Probably in here. See. Great idea. Yorkshire tea. Ah. Of course. It's great. [Music] It just started to rain but it's not heavy rain so it's fine. You know what
We always love during the festive season is the Christmas trees up there because it's not really a thing in Germany and it's so pretty. Very special. [Music] I don't know if you can even hear me. We're now at the Fleece Inn or is it just called The Fleece? It says The Fleece. And it's so noisy. The guys next to us
just left and I couldn't be more happy about it. They were shouting but, yeah, we are hungry and we just ordered our food. Okay, our food just arrived and I have chargrilled chicken breast, mashed potatoes, vegetables, some sauce. Jörg! I've got a honey and a mustard sausage with onion mashed potatoes - oh - Yorkshire pudding and some vegetables. These are the vegetables. [Music] We made it back to the room and I do enjoy the quiet because the pub was so noisy. The
food was good though. Also quite affordable. And we currently have full moon and then in combination with the rain when you walk past the parsonage and the churchyard it feels so eerie. It's incredible. I really really love that. I can imagine when you book one of these ghost tours,
I I had a look yesterday it was actually sold out. It must be quite terrifying but yeah, we will go to bed in an hour or so and we will keep exploring tomorrow so see you in the morning. [Music] Good morning! It's only ten past 8 o'clock and we thought we would get up early because yesterday was so busy and we just want to capture Haworth, the Main Street quiet and beautiful. The light is amazing. Have a look. Just look at the light this morning. So I'm
here on Main Street and in the back you've got the Yorkshire Moors. It's so picture perfect. [Music] Einen schönen guten Morgen. Yes. Good morning. Isn't it gorgeous today? Yes but it's freezing cold. Yes but the sun is out, a little bit so I think it's absolutely perfect. Yeah. I love this. We're going to breakfast now but we want to show you the the accommodation from the outside actually. This is it called Weavers of Haworth. We actually really like it. It was a great last minute choice so see we do have a Christmas tree as well so here's the name,
Weavers of Haworth and we really like it. [Music] Okay, it's now 10 o'clock and we want to go once more into the shop, The Cabinet of Curiosities. Yes because I think now it's empty because we are probably one of the first customers. Yes. I think filming is a little bit easier now and
I spotted a Christmas book that I want to get. Yeah. What do you think? I don't know concerning Christmas presents. Did you see anything that we might - just have a look. Yeah. I do love the decoration so much. Let's go there. I'm so in love with the shop display or the the window
display and all the decoration. The mushrooms, I have such a weakness for mushrooms. I can't help it. Whenever I see a display like this I feel like a child. Yeah. [Music] I really like this as a gift idea because the I don't know the gift box is so gorgeous and inside is a candle, a soap bar and bath bomb. So that's 39 and there's the smaller one. It's just so pretty, isn't it? I'm currently thinking of getting maybe one or two of these gingerbread candles as a gift. Oh! That's the ginger bread - but it smells really like gingerbread. We thought I don't know it might be a a gift idea. It's a very good gift idea. And they told us that they
do everything themselves here. Yes so they're produced here, they're developed here so - I don't know gingerbread is Christmassy. This is more although ginger - yeah - I mean that does work all all year. Hm. You really love that. I love that because I love the smell of lemons.
Can you give this one a sniff? Hemlock. Hemlock. Yeah. I don't know. I really don't know. See! Jörg this one is the the book I'd love to get. Yeah and we'll get it later. Yes because I don't know, can you show it? Then I can film. But this looks so traditional. Very, little stories. I think I really like that to get into the mood. I love that. Yeah. Small stories.
Yes. If you do love taking a bath you, you love it Jörg. Yeah. This is a good idea. Seaweed bath. Or here. Sweet dreams yeah - lavender bath. I really like the I don't know the packaging. Yeah. And look here. Ointment. Yeah. I love things like that so much. I can't help it. Yeah. So nice. So traditional. Look. Yeah. So cute. This shop is amazing.
[Music] Look at the ceiling. It's so magical. Look at this! Cauldron bath bombs. Yeah. That's so fun. I love this. [Music] Look, how cute is this? Is this - tiny - a book - yeah - and then a small candle. That's adorable. [Music] That's so heavy. It's really heavy. Yeah. Is that like tin? No - feels like. Oh it's look, and then here. It's like gilded. Yeah. Wow. It's so gorgeous. Goodness. It's like, this is art. To me this shop is magical because it feels like how shopping used to be. Yes. And the books,
I love the books. And the smell! It smells so good inside the shop. I see some people went inside without their husbands - yeah - but you enjoyed it as well? I enjoyed it because I like smells and - the the books - yeah books - were like the ones we we showed they were so heavy - yeah - and gilded. Also I don't know behind us you is the church and you can there's the service. Yeah. Can you hear it? It's gorgeous, isn't it? Yeah. So that's the the bag - which is nice - I can't I can't believe that we didn't go
inside last time we came. Yeah. We really missed out. So we bought the book - yeah - and it's so beautifully wrapped and then - a candle - than, then of course, I can't speak. A candle. It's so you you just can't leave without something. So this will be a gift for someone special.
[Music] As you can tell we are in the car. Uh. Yeah, it's raining. Yes. So we are at Penistone Hill Country Park. Yes because we wanted to go to the Brontë waterfalls. Yes. And there's a a Brontë chair, a Brontë bridge. Yeah all with Brontë, Brontë, Brontë. Well,
because this is where they supposedly spent time and where Emily - yeah - was inspired. Yes, they got their inspiration from this landscape. for Wuthering Heights. Yeah. The weather is bad but Jörg was like, what did you say a while ago? 5 minutes ago? I. I didn't say anything. Of course.
He said he doesn't want to go because he's a wimp. No, I'm not a wimp - no, I'm joking - I'm just just don't have the right clothes. Look at me. I don't have the right clothes today. It didn't say rain yesterday - no - so but I think I don't know. Should we risk it? Heathcliff? I, we'll see. You should be Heathcliff. No. I I think we should risk it because it won't stop. No. What you think? So we'll get wet. We get wet. I mean it's a it's just a one and a half miles walk so we'll get wet. The thing is we won't come back that quick - no - so we should risk it. Yeah. And then we could we
could have a hot chocolate afterwards as a reward. No, drive home and get and dry in the car. Yes. So, yeah let let's try and see if it works out. Okay, it's not too bad at the minute so we want to give it a try. Jörg is behind me. I'm wearing my warmer coat right now because it's very cold today. Very windy which makes it even colder. The weather forecast for tomorrow says snow so yeah, I hope it's worth it so we'll see. This should be Swaledale sheep because they are in the Yorkshire
area. They are always so curious. Look. Jörg is setting up the camera and they are just watching. [Music] Look at the beautiful landscape. Yeah, it's a rough and hard landscape but it's just beautiful. These are the Yorkshire Moors for you. Yeah. And it's beautiful. You can go for walks and leave I don't know leave the world behind you so to speak.
Yes. Heathcliff! Heathcliff! You are too slow. I think we're nearly there. Maybe 500 more metres. Unfortunately it started to rain again. Actually quite heavily. Well, we should be fine. Okay, I I think we made it. The bridge,
the Brontë bridge is down there. Okay, this is the so called Brontë chair. supposedly Charlotte Brontë sat on it -yeah here. See someone someone engraved Charlotte Brontë. I don't know if you can see it. But it looks like a chair. It does. It really does. Yeah. I mean it's gorgeous down here. Imagine being alone on your own. In the winter time. No, it's lovely. I think it's a wonderful spot. Yeah. The the positive thing right now because the weather is so bad not many
people are here so that's good. [Music] What many people do here is they take a walk to Top Withens which is a farmhouse ruin. We won't be doing that today. It's simply too wet but it's gorgeous. I really love it here. Sometimes I absolutely need, Jörg does as well, a walk in the countryside. [Music] Okay, despite the rain I think it was so worth it. Yes. And to me this
is Brontë weather. I always associate rough terrain with rain with Brontë. That's true. Sun wouldn't be fitting. No. It's, sun is Jane Austen weather. I think, that's yeah, that's a good I don't know yeah yeah, a great comparison. Yes and if it's really raining very heavily in the city that's Charles Dickens weather. Charles Dickens yes. Yes. Well, Christmas time in one of the loveliest villages in England, in Brontë Country - yeah - we hope you liked it. Yeah, I loved it. Me too. I think the only thing is they've maybe they get it I don't know, a Christmas Market - yeah - I was imagining at a Christmas Market uh in the place where the Sweet Shop is. That would be nice. Oh yes. Some stalls and mulled wine. Yes.
Okay. Gedeckter Apfelkuchen mit Sahne - oh yeah - Streuselkuchen, Schwarzwälder Kirsch - mhhhh. When we were walking yeah, she was always telling me names of German cakes. Yeah. Just to tease me because she knows I love them. Yes. I do now - so so Kirsten can be very cruel. Now I do fancy a hot chocolate and a lovely slice of cake. Yes. Where to get it? Apfelkuchen. Where to get it? At home. You could have some some um apple crumble. Yeah. Well, we hope you like the video and as always thank you so much for watching. We are slowly
getting into the Christmas mood. Yes. I think we'll soon start decorating our home. Well, next week. Next week. So. Maybe. Most definitely. We will. So as always we'll see you again very soon and take care. Until next time. Bye. Bye. Bye bye. Bye.
