offer our respects to all our indigenous cultures and recognize their continued connection to the land today i want to share a story with you i would say my life was without any major events until the pandemic of 2020 i did not grow up during the depression nor any of the world wars i'm not quite that old i did grow up listening to my grandmother's stories of those times my grandmother was born in 1912. she was 94 when she passed away she was six years old when the world war one ended she was 17 when the depression began and she was 27 when the second world war started she she saw challenging times all before the age of 30. she raised my father and his brother during the second world war she knew what rationing was she got excited when they got oranges that was considered a luxury or a treat she understood how to stretch a dollar and even how to save one when she did not even have a dollar to save she understood what sacrifice and hard work was my grandfather died when my father was 12. my grandmother was in her 40s with two boys she sacrificed everything for them she worked three jobs just to put food on the table and she made sure my father had an education so why am i telling you all of this my grandmother went through crisis after crisis the world she lived in was turned upside down over and over again many commentators have drawn parallels between our current time and the 1930s saying the pandemic could trigger the same type of economic and political upheaval that marked the depression but there's another part of that era that can illuminate the present lessons from those who somehow manage to emerge from those times with optimism my grandmother was one of those no matter how hard life was she was always resilient she taught me empathy perseverance she taught me that change is good and to be adaptable she encouraged me to take risks and have courage to make hard decisions and she taught me never to give up thriving is about learning and growing as a result of an event we have been taught many life lessons over this past year that can't just be learned from books you are stronger and more resilient you have learned to be adaptive adaptive and to accept change my grandmother believed in the future she saw lots of innovation and change during her lifetime she saw the invention of the television in the car she saw a man land on the moon computers video games and the internet all became reality during her lifetime she changed and adapted and embraced what life put in front of her at the end of the day cna has provided you with an education but i really hope you are coming away with more than that this year be innovative and continuously look for different ways to do things persevere and never give give up even when things seem very challenging and lastly always be empathetic and courageous i want to leave you with a few thoughts from dr seuss don't cry because it's over smile because it happened you have brains in your head
