tonight we're just going to talk about well since we are celebrating paraguayans independence day i figured we could talk about celebrations you know all those fun things that we can't we kind of can do but in small groups yeah that stuff so let's start lots of words so let's begin and i have to shift this over a little bit okay so obviously we're talking about fiesta la fiesta which is party or you also have la celebracion which is a celebration remember ion is mostly not exclusively feminine in the spanish language so la fiesta or la celebracion which is party and or celebration and two of the main verbs and this is excluding slang all those slang words we talked about like um to party or to celebrate something especially which as you can see there's um similarity between fiesta festejar and of course celebrate which is a cognate to celebrate very similar to la celebracion now there are more words for this i'm just giving you a few such as el dia de fiesta this is one of the many ways to say holiday many many ways so for instance if we were going to say um like a holiday in general like mi fiesta favorita we're going to get into that we could use the word fiesta you could talk about el dia de fiesta you could talk about which is a another way of saying a holiday or a dia diado or la or el dia festival so there's a lot of ways to say this and i recognize that but just to keep it a little bit easier el dia de fiesta for holiday so now in the comments okay what is your favorite holiday it could be from your culture it could be from um latin american culture it could be one of the holidays we've talked about we've talked about la navidad we've talked about the other independencia of several countries we talked about el dia de los muertos just to name a few so cuales fiesta favorita okay whether it's your culture or another it doesn't matter and you can respond me fiesta favorita s and then fill in the blank so me fiesta favorita de los muertos i just think it's a really cool holiday and i loved our show about that so put in the comments and i'll get back to that in one minute so moving on so again put it in the comments okay so when we talk about holidays we talk about certain things like friendship okay the people that you want to surround yourself with so that is la mista so amigo is a friend or there's you know all those different ways to say friend and slang but la mistad is friendship and similar to how words end in ion in spanish are feminine words that end in a.d la mistad those are feminine as well just so you can remember between ella labs of just always memorizing it patterns are very useful and then of course you have an amor which is love okay uh and then you have el invitado la in vidada which is um el invitado is a male guest female or los invitados to make it easier because remember even if it's a room full of women and one guy it's los invitados in general so um and then we have um el amitrion orlan fi triona which is the host of the party and then the last one is what you don't want to be and that's el agua fiestas which is party pooper someone who's not so fun okay moving on last set for this segment and then i want to check out the comments okay all right there's so many ways of saying congratulations and something happens especially if it's a party that's celebrating something so here are a couple ways to say it you have felicitaciones which is very similar to the word in french if you're a romance language learner such as myself you have felicidades there's that a d again and by the way when we make a word that ends in a d plural so like if we are to go back for example and talk about amistad las amistades you add an e s at the end just like you do in fedexidades and then of course you have the word nora buena and what is the best way to toast um if you don't have you need some champan or champagna there are two different ways to say it depending where you are and then of course you have umbrendis and that's the cheers and it comes from the verb so going back to the comments i'm only seeing one right now hold on i'm trying to put them and and i'm seeing the one from garen dancing me too shopping presents and shopping okay let's see what else yes the new year and we talked about that in all the different traditions like in colombia how they run around the street with their suitcases um empty suitcases to talk about like you know for the for the fortune of good travels um yes liliana well done garen and monique so um if you want to still put them in the comments i'll look at them and comment later below um but thank you for paying attention and our next part of the segment is slang mostly from um just paraguay but also well it's all from paraguay but also some slang from guadagni and this is a language i just want to touch about it really really quickly in case that we get into it a lot but this is a language that's spoken by a large amount of not just paraguay but in the surrounding areas brazil bolivia argentina and it's one of the two official languages and we talked about this a while back um when we first talked about paraguay because some of the music and one of our guests spoke guarani and um it's taken over 20 years to be considered an official language since the constitution of 1992 so about 20 years or so no i'm not doing that math right at all around 30 years and um about seven million inhabitants of paraguay speak guadagne so hopefully we'll get into a little more later in the program and if we don't we're definitely going to talk about it in the second segment so that's all i have oh last one now what is vispera de la nuevo enrique your teeth yes means the eve yes good job yes just checking need to make sure they're paying attention yeah yeah yeah we're working doing things yesterday we we paid attention oh yeah well sometimes i'm looking at my notes and changing my slides so i can't see what you guys are doing like congratulations and celebrate and we're going to talk about when is exactly the celebration soon but now i think so it's time to go for a little bit of music and you remember that we were talking from paraguay and we have a special guest that he is coming with us and also he's a very good friend for the latin america show he has been before here with us so i would like to say hello and good evening to the ambassador genaro papalardo how are you how are you enrique very good thank you thank you for accepting this invite and of course in this special time for paraguay in particular and in that ways like i would like just like uh of course well like starting like okay well if you can tell us a little bit more about well paraguay is celebrating 2010 years of independence and when is this exactly when is the day that you are celebrating this this uh this independence but you know paraguay is a very unique country you you know that we have two shields on the our flag and we we celebrate many things two times two times or two different times and the the independence started um in the day and for team may 1811 it was all around the day in the afternoon and the evening and we we wake up the following day independence so this is why 14 and 15 we celebrate in paraguay it was the process of our independence in two days it was it was a unique uh unique earning it's not don't know probably not unique but uh young young young soldiers who paralyzed our perpetuals organize this movement but on this particular time the the governor bernardo velasco it was fantastic we have a very nice picture of frame about to uh a canyon a canyon directed to the resident of the governor uh at the day before and it was a very good because it was it wasn't it wasn't blood that day probably in the previous day but that day was very peaceful we put the canyon only one in front and we did with requests to be independent and that was a quick one time they take some time to measure yes but finally on this team we are we will need the vendors so this is why uh we celebrate 14 and 15 of may our independence well actually as as you say i think this is one of the unique countries in that way that you didn't have like long battles or something that well you have to pass through uh and it was like just a very good way to just to conclude with this with this uh independence and and just receiving this um of course this freedom from the from spain in that time so well it's like uh yeah it was really quick and and i would like to know more about it's like how do you celebrate in paraguay these days well we celebrate our normally official celebrations on the on the the palace of lopez or the the government is may 15th we have our uh parade we have a parade we have we signed our national hampton and then we are uh the normally some some people come to the president to to to shake hands whatever but during the day the day before and the day and then the 15 and the people are have party celebrate we have a very good uh food in paraguay probably different than the united kingdom but we are uh we are several foods probably very rare to listen to you but i like it is not a liquid it's not a soup it's a cake by the way okay it was funny because i remember i remember when i was my first duty in washington many years back and i i i i was a part of the third and i take a food of paraguay and i mentioned i will bring a paraguayan soup okay and they bring something to like you think to take like a soup properly but i say no it's a cake all right for a while the food is it's a cake and also we have the chipa the chipotle is like a small bread very delicious and we have a also uh our kanye la cana is is uh it's a rome paraguay is very good we celebrate with kenya and natural foods and the people are very happy but very happy people and as we become independence very in very peaceful way it's a peaceful country peaceful people i i have a quick question when you went back and you talked about the sopa that's not actually soup is the word different in paraguay because it's hard for me to find paraguayan slang and i was wondering if that if it's just a different word over there i beat you different words i can get it while you will mention what if you said like you said like la sopa wasn't actually a soup so they have a different meaning in paraguay because you know how some words have different meanings from one country to the next in spanish no no all right unique it's unique got it okay that's good to know um and you mentioned the uk speaking of which like when did you first come here what was our experience like for you i mean in uk um sorry you were talking about like the difference between like like the uk and the culture and stuff and and what was it like coming to to london i believe oh well it's completely different uh no you know i mean the the style well this time now because the people are they have put away on this fan you go to parties whatever they go to the bar but the bridges they go to the pub they go to the pub it's very tradition but the paraguay we have we are probably um in this particular time the people goes to to celebrate with their fathers you have your father your mother you go there to have a this wonderful foods it's not full with frame it's more family and in the day of the independence okay so it's like actually that way it's more like they are celebrating instead of like parties with friends as you're saying but they are like another kind of events a part of the you were telling us about the parade but i don't know if there are any other festivities around like i don't know fault or dances or a particular type of music that is played during this season yes yeah do we have what uh we have some concerts sometimes sometimes they they prepare us and concert in the garden of the palace and they are allowed to do that until many people come you have a lot of bands different kind of music from from fall music to pop whatever the people celebrating this kind of concert open open concert not that day and it's a very very unique country for me i mean paraguay and i really missed not to be there at this moment very close and something is something very important to mention because we have two two and two whatever but we in the fifth team we celebrate two things also not only the independence but mother's day in paraguay in the same day yes oh okay so what are you like no yeah because yeah for example they celebrate 10th in united states but the ninth in some other places and then 15 in paraguay it's just like the mother's got a long weekend celebrations hey in latin america we are lucky we go well we're not too lucky because it's saturday but we will be prepared to have thursday friday and the weekend yeah that's correct actually it's like it's bank holiday also in paraguay both days are only one no official holiday is the 15th the official holiday is the 15th but you know paraguays is a very uh particular particular country that the people are enjoying both days all the time yeah well we are latinos we love parties and everything so it's like yeah we don't need the skills to have a party or everything it's part of our plot and everything so yeah and just one question it's like um for example you were saying is there any particular place in um in paraguay that is like uh you have like an important festivity or tradition these days like i don't know it's like a because maybe it's like uh is the place that you were saying the place that everything like was started and consumed at the same time or they are like i don't know they go to a particular area to celebrate or something no it's not a particular area it's all all the country but it's very good question because i i want to re remind of what what happened on that period of time because i was leaving 18 11 but i want to go to the the first the first head of mission in united kingdom was francico solano lopez he was our marriage called he's a hero for the war and he was the son of carlo antonio lopez um the palace of lopez is the palace of government in paraguay he continued had the name and when when solano lopez went back to paraguay after the experience to be a head of mission in london moving to paris and ever they create a fantastic parties at the palace they dance in the palace that period of time it just passed we don't have any more at the palace but there was a particular time in the 18 1800s to have this kind of parties with very very fantastic music whatever um it's very important to know that one of the music the people like more in paraguay it calls london carape london carape but it's london london carape carapace is a kind of dance the people enjoy very much he is fantastic no london carape they danced at the palace of lopez in the 1800s wonderful well that's really interesting we don't have that and unfortunately we don't have the sign of party at the palace all right we literally miss you we like to eat there at that period of time yeah well that and and of course we would like to be invited also just to just enjoy that kind of party of course and just like talking about parties and celebration it's like is there any particular way i know that well this now they are going to be a couple of of of of years because it was like last year and this year that while we have been in london in the uk but is there any particular celebration or any way that you are going to celebrate here in the uk and just that the audience maybe they can join uh this friday and saturday that you have something that you're going to do you've been here in india for people in in the uk yeah well no i i'm not going to celebrate i i decided we have some reference for my capital to to do a very uh just to postpone to the proper time and i think will be probably next year that last year we we have to counsel it was very difficult here and this particular yet also it's not and to organize to our few only people i prefer to have more people in my independence celebration at london yeah i i've been there and it's amazing the food is amazing you were there but yeah but for example for the audience i know you had a message and one of the important governments here in the uk between latin america and uk they gonna have a video can with the help of canning town canning town is a body government where is uh uk and latin america and it's gonna be published there in canada i think that the the the supposed to be to come tomorrow i think at the current house mission they are going to so i will share with you um but you have my mind uh and you want to to do today is not a problem but it's in spanish i didn't do it in english so every year that we have celebrated independence i get back to the i get back to the future i mean i get back to the future you know it is fantastic because i i really love my country i really love the people like it was a very peaceful independence no blood not not a cruel world and it is the the spirit that paraguayan has i i love that spirit ambassador and taking from that spirit i know we we we dance we like to to shout our national hands and everything but you know i i prefer to do it in a quiet way this time and yeah it's going to be the question it's good it's going to be so sorry and i think so also it's like we have just to be conscious and and this is as you said all around the world i think so this situation that we're passing through it could be like very good lesson for everyone that well it's like we are so vulnerable as human beings so we have to be together we have to be peaceful and and also they are like a lot of things that are happening around the world nowadays that well they are no they don't make any sense i think so lessons learned about this one it's like we have to be together and we have to contribute together uh it doesn't matter if we are latinos if we are latinos in the uk if we are from europe from asia from wherever we are human beings and actually i think so uh as whitney said last uh last program that well it's like we have a singer with a particular song that it was really good and saying that well all of us we are different but that is the magic is to be different that doesn't mean that we are a different species or a different race it's like we are the same and we have to share and to celebrate that differences that we have instead of fighting against them yeah yeah and differences i believe the song actually like said with this but we all share the same heart and i think yeah just to just to add on what you were saying enrique because i thought that line of that song was so powerful and i think it's something we have to i totally agree um keep and keep in mind especially during these tough times that try to divide us it's best to come together yeah wonderful wonderful word enrique whitney thank you very paraguay where are you from paraguay which place um was i born in coronelo viedo near asuncion and then my family moved to another city in the countryside when i was raised and which other city they moved to uh okay and it does because well it's like actually i'm not very proficient with the geography of paraguay that is at the north south east or west of paraguay oh because we know that i think i finished north i'm not sure because just the people they know and i think so we spoke about this before paraguay is well known as the heart of south america because it's in the middle exactly of of of south america well sorry whitney over you no i'm just trying to i'm looking but i'm i'm i'm having a tough time trying to find it myself i don't have a question okay sorry well it's like okay sorry so well it's like i just want to ask you like when and and later on while you were living there and when did you arrive a to to london well i arrived in here on 23rd of december on 2005. how was that for you what was that experience like it was a little bit shocked for me how so please tell us um well uh it's a new experience for me to be in the big city and you know and was i i always leave the countryside and then you came and you know the big city it's a little bit you know yeah crowded and a lot of people and noise and yeah yes i think so it was like a little bit difficult at the beginning right yes a little bit difficult yes and the language too [Laughter] yeah the language is sometimes is difficult when we started here but you arrived to london you're coming from paraguay that's a completely different experience but how did you start the paraguayan dances in london you started here in london just no well um i started a dance paraway and dance by uh dancing uh primary and secondary school events and i never attended a dance studio but i had friends uh who did and who taught me everything about it and when um you started a dancing group um i believe it's called um when did you start that and how did that turn out um everything started when marie mesa at the time was a president of the paraguayan aglopara hawaiian society told me she had a group of children they want to dance paraway and dance and i started teaching them and eventually other people wanted to join us um to join us so we started a group with the adults um around 2006.
but then they came around 2008. um we are very uh uni unites group and almost all the original uh member still with us wow and you said you talked about adults but um are kids a part of it because i think i saw one or two in the pictures do you have something exclusively for kids or is it purely adults doing these dances in this group initially was children but then the adult they can and join us too yes but we have a children group and the other group too got it also i can see maria that was like well it's like we are watching some some pictures and some events that you have been participating here in the uk uh but also i can notice that well you have i don't know if you can move your camera a little bit down so we can see that well i can see that you have the the paraguayan flag behind you yes i got yes yeah i don't know if you could yeah perfect and actually you're wearing something what are you wearing yes yes i wearing my traditional is like a spiderweb okay okay yeah because all this is made by hand for our um artisan uh people in paraguay this is incredible yes we love how colorful it is yes and this is my ear is a bead you can see oh your earrings yes um yes it's uh our name is is mean uh honey honey yeah that is that quality yes okay okay do you speak warani yes really okay well uh tell us something in warning yeah i i would love something like i don't haven't cared like while she is speaking well we expect when we don't want to people know what and you know sometimes people they can't understand what we're talking about okay well always is a good point yeah and and also while just going back to uh that well actually i remember that well one day you you complained my pronunciation about the name yeah yeah you remember that one yeah okay so it's like i i i know that what you're celebrating 15 years so it's like you have a 50th anniversary of rupaul 80 so yes well first it's like congratulations for that i think this is like um an extraordinary achievement yeah just getting like 15 years and also as you were saying that it's like basically the same people but i don't know if you can tell us about some memorable moments that maybe have happened during these years or something that is coming to your mind yes um there were many but i think that the most memorable was uh the new year parade on 2018. 2018 but which parade was that one the new year's yeah yeah yeah okay that was an amazing and amazing uh an amazing day for the meaning of the latin americans showing the traditions so um i was there i saw you and i was in in love of the the all the dresses and then what's the meaning is it dance specific because you have um it's like a bottle no on your head yeah yeah it doesn't have any meaning or is part of the folklore easy it's part of the folklore and the dance is called veda we we dance uh with bottle or we can dance with the bass two is is the band actually the guy in the picture it was fernando montano right many nearly as many resources as there are for other languages so but it's very different but it's yet cool that you not many people know that that's the other official language yes paraguay it's a fun it's a fun fact um i i have a quick question about so during lockdown um you decide i believe to hold like workshops um with the product line dances online how did that go and how how was it received um actually um we didn't give a workshop online well we what we did was so obtain a grant by the department for digital culture median sport um explore um national the national lottery community funds all right and thank you to the federation or latin american artist groups which we are part of it we with the fun the um correspondent to paraguay we hire a paraguayan dance teacher to give uh [Music] sun online classes of paraguayan dances and history of the paraguayan dance that was very interesting for many people to know more uh to to to know more about paraguayan dance and the history too okay thank you okay good to know wow that's that's amazing i mean as you say whitney and maria is it's a difficult obviously it's it's very particular of paraguay that warning and and obviously the dances are beautiful i saw it i recommend every all the audience just type for or search for a group of ade on facebook so you can see all those dances which are i mean love are amazing and maria one last question what is your favorite thing about latin america well um i love everything related to american culture it's music food people everything and and what is the biggest thing that you miss about parliament one just one i know that the baby they are many but one thing that you say i miss this one um to take a mate with my mother okay you know it's mean mate yeah it's the it's the drink the herbal it's a drink yes yes but that is the hot drink early in the morning yes we talked about that actually and how it's a little different in different parts of the southern cone but yeah yeah yeah and i think someone saw in the comments they said mate when they saw the video paraguay because there was with the straws the metal straws mate mugs so yeah we have talked about that for those of you who don't know it comes it's a plant-based drink that comes from the holly plant family is consumed in argentina uruguay paraguay and i think brazil as well yes in production of it yeah yes yes yes and and one question to the ambassador do you speak warning also i i i would say only one word in guarani who though who is i love you the best way to get a beautiful girl how i usually say we are very well we are flattered that you are here with us uh and well as we were spoken before it's like uh you have an amazing rhythm uh extraordinary songs it's really good and i know that well you jen as as royal he was saying it's like even part of your family background about all these kind of arts etc but i would like to ask to both of you it's like how did you start with this musical formation in particular so i don't know if you want we can start with you jen how you started yeah let's start with jenny well we both have have like really different uh roads for the the music i started like in family and family meetings and singing with my with my dad and my my sisters and brothers and and later i i sing like in in high school contests and i i i start like uh having like uh come on economica yeah okay stability financial availability yes yes only with hey yeah we don't know what that means [Laughter] yes we are okay so like eight years ago but i started yes with with my family like like a hobby and and like a family community to all family ritual from the family yes yeah amazing and what about you miguel yeah yeah and um when i was in eight years old and i started to with a mariachi yeah what yeah empire why we have more mariachis than um traditional music musical music musicians yeah and and that's so funny yeah because i i i am one of them he was like really i was one of them when i was young yeah yeah i of course this kind of painful songs and everything i i'm pretty sure if you were like a mariachi but how did you start changing because well now it's like uh well you have passed through many different rhythms so it's like yeah what happened there just life my friend um because we we as as a musician we we have to change our styles and every time and learn some music i mean i'm i'm not conceded and a musician um latin american musician we have to sing bolero we have to sing what anyas yeah because we we were off in the middle of the latin america you know in just just that we're both learning how to listen listen um i i i'm so sorry for spoken english no worries no that's perfect but as you say you're you're in the middle of latin america and obviously you're following your career and seeing your videos i mean that's amazing but i want to know and bri and everyone wanted to know what is the meaning of the name pura hey soul and when you start us means seeing or singing in in english language in our loving language and we are not in native languages you know and and so and means alma in in in spanish and and with that word we want to um talk about our influence from afro-american music like r b soul and blues jazz that we we like a lot too and that's what we want to have that word in in our name just like that and canto singing from the soul wow it's amazing i mean it's it's an honor that that that that name the this is really strong and how do you make together do you make together before how how do you start a duel we meet each other in uh uh just seminary uh is that how we say just it's a seminary yeah like a seminar yeah and in 2000 2013 yeah yes and after three months we started this project and miguel er just just came at that time he he just came from from new yeah you wanted to travel again yeah again yeah with with that feeling is is how it born ah very nice yeah yeah you're so well-gendered don't worry about it it's all good we have translators here so so don't worry about that at all i have a question in speaking language um your first album swing guarani it opened doors in many many ways and what was that like for you guys what impact did that have on your career well it was great it's still great because we have like uh our first international international tours thanks to that album we've been in argentina in like four cities from argentina and after we we've been in in mexico and finally with we've been to in in and and it was really good the people like a lot there the traditional wire music that we we showed there and and also we met you guys there yeah yeah that's true that's true i was i was speechless when i when i was young london that wasn't london right it was it was outside kind of a little bit outside london but yeah it's considered london yeah but this is one of the uh one of the most important universities by the way yeah we saw that we saw that for real it was so huge and so beautiful to play to you guys and it was an honor for for us to be there and i i have a question it's like well you've been thinking like of course across paraguay but outside paraguay how people they have received your songs that they have been sung on in in how do people receive the different language how do they receive it in other countries like for example here skin is that like chicken i don't know exactly the sound that the sound and the the way you sing it the way you transmit the the when you're singing it's just it's something like probably the barrier so yeah in that way yeah and and i one of the things that i i would like to highlight there is like well it's like i would love that the rest of the countries in latin america we will be so attached to our languages that we have as as para y uh i don't know in mexico people sometimes they are ashamed to talk uh another language and uh that the local language and i think so it's like i i really love how you promote and how you really are proud of that that well actually i'm just a little bit jealous that i don't know any other local language in my country and it's like now i feel like curiosity like well that could be interesting and not only as mariachi was saying that well it's just to just talk about about some topics around and people they don't understand no but i think it's really interesting the way that you are so proud about it and and honestly it's like that's the way that we have to be uh about our roots and also of course expanding this knowledge yeah especially thank you oh sorry no no go ahead please no now i just i i i just like to say that we're really proud of uh our native language and and everybody should be proud of it um everybody that is speaking that speak what i need should be private proud of it and and we're so happy to to tour around the world to take our language and our music with um to the people yeah no and i was just going to do it not only that sorry with me don't need not only that is you guys are young so it's a new generation so now you're singing to young people and more young people can receive and and receive that which is amazing with me you no i was just gonna think that's like you know this is one of the areas i teach about indigenous languages and there's all these hot topics about all these indigenous native languages that are disappearing from other countries so i think it's wonderful that guani is recognized it's recognized as a official language and that you guys are keeping it alive um but i have a question about something else and it's about your latest work the sapo and the inspiration about the project can you elaborate a little bit more about that piece of work i believe our next next song and is about to go out this friday and it's like a it's like a love song but yeah it speak about let go and and and be happy and thankful uh in any way anyways to let go which is interesting because it's desapaego in english is like indifference so well it could be more in that way i think so that translation in english should be more like not attachments right not attachments not be attached to something except in that way and level yeah yeah it's like understand how to release i i i think it's more like okay how to release of some of the things and not be attached directly for it to be feelings or it could be like material things in general yeah and i guess that's why i was asking if if that was what the lyrics were about yes and and and it's a love song but speaking about uh this um like other other way to love like letting go but and be happy and thankful yeah and you realize how happy we were anyways just like to take in the best no take the best and also is this kind of just be disattached is like more like just well to be happy because well you have it at certain time yeah yeah just like that that happens and and and also it's like well it's like i know that well it's like i i just want to know that also in your band they are you playing like traditional music from paraguay yes it's like a a traditional confirmation called a bandita koa and we have like a cinco wow women okay that's nice and we're we're they are all teachers and they they play so so so well and we we're so proud of them them yeah because i'm pretty nervous because they represent all of uh we all of what we're gonna say you know and to take in woman's in the in this in the stage you know and inside instead of mens says so that is like something that should be traditional because it should be like performed by men only so it's something that well is that part of a tradition normally or or or why normally men they are the ones that they are playing just like this because they're
