everyone good morning good morning to you i do a lot of presentations to groups here at the convention center and all over the island welcoming different conventions and conferences here and i always love the tourism summit i tell you you have an energy [Music] the human voice amplifier i love this town man i'm a texas boy we'll get into my story a little bit but i'm originally from connecticut i grew up in el paso texas man very multicultural big melting pot that's where i started my musical journey and then i went to a texas tech university [Music] hey guys we're getting ready to go to a breakout session so i'm going to go to the expo area where they have the vendors and then i'll go to influencer one-on-one i need to learn how to be a good influencer for the internet y'all okay y'all this is the expo center mommy's gonna be here just a little while and i'm gonna go where i can uh get a good seat for the breakout i didn't even know it was the second row of vendors y'all [Music] [Music] with the ice cream cakes where's your boyfriend hi how are ya i just want y'all to see it good so that's why i didn't make it smaller and of course my favorite place for me is the restaurants plenty of them everywhere and so you can actually rent these vehicles wow nice vehicles the rent [Music] nice cling shot reynolds huh pretty you know the name well y'all they even have photos up here yeah what's the name and photos trying to make this as short as possible yeah y'all [Music] nice [Music] [Music] um [Music] [Music] here y'all wedding and and events planners right and then the next one jonathan [Music] jonathan giving away stuff [Music] okay [Music] with us [Music] i don't even know where they are [Music] we've heard from our colleagues at royal caribbean as a long time native galvestonian seeing the growth of the cruise industry what do you what do you think there's a microphone right on the other side of you there you go well it sounds great especially that you all are investing in the island like that and one of the first things before i ever got elected i called roger reese and uh took a tour a friend and i out there so we could see it from the other side because and he knew every piece of rotten wood that was there and we've got a dredge here we've got to do this so now i'm seeing another part of it which is just awesome and the idea that you're bringing it here and it improves economic development helps with some local jobs i heard you talking about and not only that i think i kind of read that you guys have a important community pillar you have three you do respect collaboration and communication and within your company and that is what we definitely need to accomplish anything we must have respect communication and collaboration so we're glad you're here yeah nice thank you for that and we appreciate all city councils done to open the way for this development um as well and and um expect that your continued oversight and guidance on that um especially since you don't have a challenger in this current election you're gonna although i see you out there pounding the pavement oh yes well i thought david collins was gonna be here because it said district two he was here for our vip reception last night i i suspect because he's got a challenger he might be out there at the polls um you know sharon the reason i wanted to bring you up is because you've done a yeoman's job in bringing together an opportunity for galveston that always sat there but we were never quite able to put our arms around it and that's this great opportunity that we had when last year juneteenth was determined to be a national holiday how many destinations get a national holiday i asked and three was the answer i got back and galveston's one of them and what i mean by a national holiday is a holiday that is connected to a site and juneteenth is connected to this site um how do you see that this opportunity is going what do you think that this will do for our community this opportunity of juneteenth as a national holiday wow the opportunity of a juneteenth as a national holiday will just enhance the community overall and um make us aware of our history here we know that galveston is a lot of first for everything and and the reading of the emancipation proclamation was here and uh not only that but i heard the interesting story the other day about uh the gentleman who was um the man guy what's his name yes yes and yes and how awesome is that story to know that at that time you had people who cared about people and in that house they were separated because of that that was the time period so you had the whites in one room and then you had the slaves in the other room but it was the music it's music that was the bottom line and that brought them together and i thought that was awesome and that's a good thing for juneteen we should know the history of the emancipation proclamation of that reading and not only that but one point back to the crews to have a suggestion that uh as you go along one citizen in the community made a suggestion about having a cruise a of cruise that goes like to the caribbean goes through that uh point and back so that that's a great suggestion and uh you know ricky smiley uh took tom joyner's place so anyway they organized cruises all the time but your boat which is uh your cruise line would just be awesome for that yeah we could really build something around that i know you're working on a week or 10 days of activities for juneteenth already but the recognition or the participation of a major chain like that could be really fundamental in bringing light you know you mentioned a couple of things i wanted to talk about first off stories that you're learning i imagine that as this validation has come for our community that a lot of stories are being told stories that you heard and heard before i would hope that that instills a sense of pride in our young people about the importance of galveston and the the reading of the uh emancipation proclamation um there anybody working to capture some of those histories yet well we have a lot going on for trying to get together for uh juneteenth a lot of plans a lot of events going on uh we started locally with um alex thomas he started uh i told him we need to get it under one umbrella get all the uh state those people who are in the community who already do events and bring bring us all under one umbrella so we have the stakeholders who've been doing those activities for years your parade and your scholarship gala miss brown gwinnethia pope and we have lawanda allen but most importantly we have a young lady we're classmates the neo culture center director and she has been the venue by which we have been able to come under this umbrella and bring everybody together she has been in neocultural centers been here for 30 years and the goal or the mission is education and that is critically important for emancipation proclamation or slavery because we weren't allowed to to be able to read and this is kind of a sensitive subject but it's a subject that we need to be aware of she's done lots of educational tours so we've been able to take all of these entities bring them together and make it a very focal point for juneteenth so from there we organized and then of course alex brought in the young man who developed our web page so there's a web page out there and from there it stepped into it's a task force out there with texas a m university uh yeah and sam collins and uh those students are just awesome they're designing things it's just so many things going on and then from there we stepped into um the grand old opera house with um a plan for a major event on that friday night so and then hopefully we will have our that sunday a great father's day um event planned as well so there's so much going on uh we just heard about the railroad museum and what they have uh in store yeah so it's just exciting and i don't know if i answered your question but no it is it's very exciting and i think and they were as you were talking they were flipping through the web page if you all could bring that back up i believe it's visit galveston backslash june 18th and they've got the calendar up uh for all of that and lots of activities you know it's really nice because tourism is not visit galveston by by itself it's what all of you all do it's the events and the uh the reenactments the food the music that comes together to really put the whole experience together and it sounds like you've got a lot of people working together to create it if i'm if i remember right you're going to start june 10th to june 19th i'm not actually june 1st june 1st to june 19th will be our official commemoration period here on galveston island correct correct and if you're looking for things to do it's on the website the freedom tours are great they'll have activities there's speakers being brought in and this is just the beginning huh sharon lots of opportunities from here right and thank you for those notes right there because i neglected to say that part of our history here are our sacred places you know our churches here that have been 150 years plus old those education was critically important of course maguire dent started the delta sigma data sorority in january 13 1913 [Music] so we have the rosewood cemetery the first afro-american cemetery that is here and of course which identifies that particular space or block where we were allowed to go to the beach and we have of course a lot of first and one of my favorite is sam he organized the first sit-in and it was the first successful one in this in the south so we're very proud of that he is a central high school 1961 graduate so of course you know we have jack johnson who stood for the belief in people he married a lady who was of another race so we just have lots of great history here norris ray cuny of course barry white but we don't want to forget those who are out in the educational system as well we have many families um the clouser family and uh the first lady right right yeah who sued for equal pay and i was surprised because it was like how can you work for the same district and not make the same money so for them to have to do a lawsuit back then that was quite engaging to me but um that's we've we've had a lot we've got a lot to work with one last thing we've added uh we have the group and we're we're glad to add to our alliance galveston college president trey click from the downtown galveston and of course historical foundation um has been there and and they're being exhibit from them it's just so much going on and we're just hoping that everybody gets gets involved and get a piece of the action and and just grow together and learn and see that's one thing that comes from being a classroom teacher you're always thinking about togetherness you know i mean you know in the classroom i can't say oh i'm going to teach you i'm going to teach you no you have to look at everybody and you've got to work together so anyway you know so many opportunities and i don't know if you heard jovanito right before us he talked about creating experiences and i can see that this area cultural tourism is going to be somewhere where we'll have a lot of opportunities to create a lot of new immersive experience and really raise this history up be proud about it as a community and learn more about ourselves in the process i'm going to ask you one last question in order to put galvestine on the map as a destination for juneteenth what do you think we need that we don't have well well as time goes on we we need a place to display some history and what's exciting about that is that we have lots of people lots of groups working on it even uh pastor patterson at reedy chapel and i missed reading chapel church she's wanting to say hey let's put a museum right here next next to the church and then we have the city working with the historical foundation and we have the task force the a m task force working with uh sam collins so we just have so so many things going on and i just want to go back to that engagement because i heard how critically important that was for you all to engage and i remember in his presentation that he used a c which means we need to connect and then we need to nurture and and i thought that was important when you all stated how you're going to design it where when they walk on the ship you know you stay from car to bar but i'm going to have my granddaughter oh and when i go on the cruise it'll be my first cruise yes and she wanted to go out of florida but then i showed her that new vote and she said oh gee mommy i'm going to do that one so yes yes but um good yeah so we can um i think um in closing i really think of emancipation as as as freedom and uh all the nation was freed back at that time so all of us as we go from day to day there's there's a freedom of mind a freedom of hope a freedom of a destination and in that aspect galveston should be an important destination for lots of tourists out there as we continue to learn ourselves about about our island here so i think emancipation then emancipation now all right great an applause for our council member we're in good hands thank you we're gonna do some awards [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] thank you [Applause] [Applause] well guys the conference is finished oh i got to meet a lot of people a lot of nice networking hopefully it will all work out in the end to grow habasia family peace peace power to the people and on my child bye [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] you
