ALONE in rural Eastern Hungary - Would you live here?

[Music] Having explored the capital Budapest and the northern city of Eger, I was drawn to the Great Hungarian Plain, a place I'd read so much about. Join me as I journey through the vast beautiful landscapes and get a glimpse into the rich history of Hungary's cowboy culture. Hello, good morning from Eastern Hungary. I am currently at Hortobágyi National Park, which is considered as the soul of Hungary and makes up 50% of the country.

So the plains like this were actually historically important because the horsemen, the nomadic horsemen from Central Asia, migrated westwards towards Europe and ended up in this very region. Well, perhaps I won't be able to find some nomadic horsemen, but I would like to capture the essence of Hungary outside of the city and what I can see from my own perspective and I hope you enjoy this. [Music] Behind me is Hortobágyi Halasó, which is the train station that I got off to this morning. I find it quite interesting to just look at these deserted train stations. I think I'm just going to try to wait for the train to come and relax a little bit.

My name is Syifa, what's your name? Atila. Where are you going? I'm going home my sister and brother-in-law live here, I go to work here What do you like about Eastern Hungary? I like everything, the people are good company, you can talk to them about anything. you can solve any problems, there are no problems here like in many other places How many siblings do you have? Eleven Wow! [Laughs] I am the youngest I only have one sibling. How do you feel about having that many siblings? Love and happiness Thank you so much. You're going. Bye-bye. It was just lovely to have a chat a little bit with Atila. I am actually waiting for my train. 15 minutes to arrive hopefully.

Hortobágy? Yes, (I'm going to) Hortobágyi (Whilst waiting for my train, I met a farmer making his way to Hortobágy Oh ok! Work in Hortobágy. Work? Yes, work. Ah, okay. Come and see, there are horses and foals Yes, I have been wanting to see Hungary outside of the city. [Music] So we got off the train already. I'm just quite excited. What sort of animals I can see.

No big city noise. Yeah. I agree. He was saying that there is silence and peace and no big city noises. Absolutely. Ah, thank you. [Music] Even though I wasn't sure what to expect following someone I just met, I decided to trust my instincts. Bela brought me to this ranch he works at near Hortobágy station where the wide open landscape stretched out around us. Watching him with the

horses, cows and dogs, I could see how deeply he was connected to the animals. It was a glimpse into a peaceful, simple life that felt worlds away from everything else. [Music] It's amazing that there's so many horses. Moni. Moni. Oh, what an experience. [Music] This is something that I didn't expect to happen today and I almost gave up. So yeah, thanks to him.

Thank you! He's an animal whisperer. It's incredible. [Music] Thank you so much for your time for showing the ranch. You have such a beautiful relationship with the animals. Noone is any different to an animal the only difference is that we think so they show the same kind of love as a human not many people believe this Lots of horses and cows really love you I can see the love you have for them as well.

[Music] Bye, doggies! [Music] Okay, thank you, Kosanom. Thank you so much. Oh, that's quite cute. Bela is just so kind. The love that he has got for the animals, observing him and his relationship with animals, has just been incredible. [Music] Oh, the train is coming. Wow.

Welcome back to Debrecen. So that's the train I was on just now. Gorgeous locamotives over there. I'm actually sitting at the station hall and I find it quite fascinating to be able to find some trace of Soviet Union. On the wall there's still mural that encapsulates the culture of Hungarian Great Plains, or Puszta, but in a very Soviet Union style. Before I venture out further into Eastern Hungary, I would like to share a few words from SafetyWing.

As a solo female traveller who likes travelling alone to rural places, remote areas, areas that often traveller do not go to, I think having a global travel medical insurance is essential. This is where Nomad Insurance from SafetyWing comes in handy. It covers the cost of unforeseen medical emergencies and a selection of unforeseen travel related costs. I came across SafetyWing for the first time when I left Indonesia to pursue my full-time travel, and at the time it was really difficult to find travel medical insurance that actually caters towards digital nomad like me, meaning that there is a lot of uncertainties of how many days I will be travelling and how many days I will be on the road. As you may have seen in the previous videos, I was actually sick as soon as I arrived in Budapest. Thankfully, I've got SafetyWing's Nomad Insurance and I'm able to be covered in 180 different countries throughout the world.

I was able to submit a claim that was really quick through their user-friendly app, and I got an instant confirmation in just under 5 minutes. Thanks to SafetyWing for partnering with me on today's video. If you would like to check them out, please make sure to click the link at the top of my description box.

Now let's get back to exploring Debrecen and I hope you enjoy this video. Located in Eastern Hungary, this is considered as the capital city of the North Great Plain of the country. I think often the city is overlooked by tourists because it's probably slightly out of their way, but the city is quite photogenic, filled with international students from all around the world, which is fascinating for me, and I would like to show it to you a contrast between a city and real Hungary.

Today is Sunday, so it's a little bit quiet, but look at this Mr Bean car! Hungary is predominantly a Catholic nation, so protestantism is not common except here in Debrecen, the second largest city. I think the Great Reformed Church behind me is known to be the Calvanist, if I'm not mistaken, followers. It's interesting because this is Sunday, right? And although it's quiet this morning, I saw quite a bit of locals came out of the church at 11am wearing all white. What's great about the square also, they have got this gorgeous fountain with beautiful hotel behind it. Lots of people are actually cycling and I just find it quite relaxing just to be here. I'm Esther, I'm from Kenya. Hi, I'm Shalom, I'm

from Kenya as well. I'm Fiona, I'm from Uganda. I came to Hungary, Debrecen to study. It's as you can see, it's lively, not crowded, it's simple, beautiful, serene, cozy, warm, friendly people. Do you study in Hungarian or in English? No, we actually study in English, but we have to take the course just to help us move around and interact with people. Why did you choose Debrecen to study? I chose Debrecen because pharmacy was easier option to study here compared to other universities. You have to start from foundation. Yeah, thank you so much. Have a good time.

That was lovely to get a bit of introduction to some of the international students in the city. So I've got two coffees, just needed today, needed extra caffeine to get through the day and it cost me 2300 Hungarian Forint for it, which is equivalent to £5. I think it also includes 10% service charge. It's quite lovely because you see so many, not only locals but international students would gather here because this is a really, really, really good coffee shop in the city. I'd say that as a fan of coffee. So and often

when I'm sitting here, I just love observing what's in front of me, which is just people watching basically. That's not what I was expecting. I was asking for double espresso, but instead probably it's double the size. I don't have anyone to share this coffee with me, honestly. Right now leaving the city, rushing to get to my accommodation, get my luggage and get to the bus station. All right, need to blast through this packing. Can I do it quickly enough?

Honestly, carrying this much equipment. Great, let's go. So I'm going to a village called Doboz and it will take approximately 4 hours to my next destination. Will this work? My taxi is here. Yes, great.

Ah, thank you so much! So Bolt taxi is present in many cities in Hungary. Thank you. Are you from the Debrecen? Please. Are you from Debrecen? Yes, yes. Oh wow. What's your name? Attila. Attila, wow. Welcome in Hungary. Ah thank you! Thank you Oh, it's heavy. Thank you so much! Thank you Attila! Have a nice day! Bye bye! Aw so lovely, he was so lovely! I just now need to find the bus station. I think that's

the bus station over here. Right, the adventures begin. Travel days often is the true test of my sense of adventure. I think that is a bus station. So I think that's the bus timetable and mine is at 4. So I've got about 30 minutes until it departs. I think with the glass details, because today is really hot, it feels a bit like a greenhouse, but I love just the simplicity of it all. I think

I'm going to a town or another city before another transfer called Bekeścaba. Excuse me, do you speak English? Yes. I think I have a bus to, is it called Bekeścaba? Bekeścaba, yes. Is that another city? Yeah. And it's this from here? Yes, from here.

I think it's at 4, platform number 2. Okay. Okay, thank you so much. Thank you. Buses in Hungary are really great because it's not only comfortable but also very affordable. It's air conditioned. The seating is cushiony and I think it's a smooth sailing journey so far. I just showed her the YouTube channel and then she was like, oh, I'm going to be famous.

You're famous now! Do you want to say anything? Erm, no [giggles]. Thank you! Hello, so I have got a new friend right here. What's your name, sorry? My name is Katica It's nice to see another female solo travelling. You went to Debrecen to see your boyfriend? Yes, because she's got a long distance boyfriend, which reminds me of my time before I got married. But she was like, how do you travel all around Hungary? Is it by bus and trains? Yeah, I think bus in Hungary is really comfortable. Yes, but the trains, I think, no, because it's very hot.

Yes, the bus is actually really great because it's air conditioned as well. So where are you from originally? I'm from Szeged. I'm born in Szeged. I know Szeged. Really? Yeah, because that's the biggest city close to the border, right? Yes, this big city. But I have a friend who also lives in Szeged. I think he left already, so I know that city.

People always know about Budapest when they say Hungary and I said there are so many places outside of Budapest that are great and you agree to that. But I also love living in Csépa. That's a little village. It's very little, but it's good because people know each other and say hi to you in Szeged or Debrecen or Budapest nobody says hi to you.

Nobody says hi there, like, what are you doing here? [Music] We have spent the past two and a half hours getting to know each other. Feels like she's my sister now. We're both like, oh, finally we are in the Békéscsaba and yeah, it's very fun. Thank you. You're so smart. Yeah, it's like I'm happy to be with you.

Me too. No, you. She'll become famous, she said. We are here. Thank you! That's the bus station. How cute is that? It looks quite unique in terms of how it's being designed and whatnot. So Katica is going to

another bus to her destination and I am also going to a different bus to my destination. Everybody's looking at us. That's okay, that's how it works with vlogging in public. But yeah, it's been so nice meeting you. Nice to meet you. It's like a sister, another sister from Hungary. Yeah. Thank you so much. Bye.

What's great about the bus station that was behind me right next to it is actually a train station. How amazing. I just love admiring train stations. I have got about an hour until my next bus departs so I'm just going to stroll around the city a bit until I arrive in my destination.

Cannot believe that I finally have made it to this very rural area of Hungary. I really, really hope that you enjoyed today's video because I tried my best to capture the essence of Puszta, the great Hungarian plain, even though it was not the best. But the spontaneous experience was also great, the ability to interact with locals and the ability to capture ever so slightly the second biggest city in Hungary Debrecen. And my experience traveling alone as a female solo traveller to the countryside. Yeah,

and yeah, love meeting locals, chatting with them, just yeah, it really enriches my travel experiences as always. But definitely travelling this way wouldn't have been possible without my paid partner today, SafetyWing, because without travel insurance, it makes it even more scary just because the uncertainties that may happen along the way. So definitely check them out if you are travelling soon or if you are already travelling. Yeah, I can't wait to see again on the next video because I would like to create a bit more of a rural countryside living type of video. Yeah, I can't wait to see again on the next one. Let me know what you think down in the comment section below. I love reading your comment as always.
