Adults' Lesson 10: Set your sound free! | Sing with ETO

Hello. My name is Tao Selwyn I'm a tenor and, welcome. To lesson 10 in English, Turin operas series, of singing, lessons battles I also. Gave lesson, number 6 and since then we've had a lesson from soprano. Susanna Horrell baritone. Timbre voula and the, last lesson was from soprano, Paula sites. The. Reason we're doing this series is partly to help, you at home during, this time, of lockdown to. Offer you a fantastic. We, hope. Series. Of lessons that you can learn from but. Also many. Of us were involved with the spring, season, for, English Tory opera this year which, was cut short because, of the lockdown and pandemic, but. English - opera have been extremely. Supportive of, all of us through this time and we're. Delighted to, be, creating, these videos, for, you and for them and I, hope you enjoyed them so far. Timber. Gave you some homework if you watched lesson number 8 he. Asked. You to sing, a song. Song. That you know already perhaps. With. A bit of freedom, in your body some movement flexibility. And also with intention. What. Did you sing what did you choose to do the homework - perhaps you can write. Down in the comments below what. You worked, on. With, timbres homework. Of. Course singing, with intention, is vital. For sinners. For, all singers. Our. Job is to tell a story and if. There's no intention, behind that story then you just get a blank screen and an. Audience, will turn off the mmediately and. That's true of any sort of singing it's really important, to have intention. But, also it's, important, to have to. Remember that. Joy that we have behind, telling, stories. Our. Job is to tell stories and. What. We need is the freedom, the flexibility, that timbre, encouraged, and that. Sense. Of primal. Instinct. To tell a story without any, thing. Holding us back physically, and that's, why we do the technical work in. Studio that's. Why, many. Of us who, have given these lessons continue, to have our own singing lessons. Sort, of every week every couple of weeks every month or so even. Though some of us have been in in, the Korean alpha 5. 10 15, 20 years and, it's. Really important to keep our, technical. Side of things going, which. Frees, up the. Artistic. And storytelling. Side of our, artists. As we. Are to. Tell that story is freely, as we can, so. I'm going to go back from. Temblors, freedom. A bit and I'm going to move back to a few technical things that I touched, on in my lesson lesson number 6 if. You haven't watched that do watch that in fact make. Sure you watch all of them if you have time over. The next day next few weeks they. Released some great ideas and as. With all teachers. The. Language is important, that we use and we. Tend, to use slightly different language the, singers, that have done these. Videos. And a, different. Language will will. Connect with you in a different way so I do think though. Some. Ideas might be different to mine there's. A lot to, be said to watch all of them and see which ones you get something from.

So. You've done your homework remember, good. And thank, you for commenting this I look. Forward to reading what you what. You practiced. Now. I'm going to touch on a few things that I was. Asked about after, my lesson lesson number six I. Did. A few exercises, with, a rolled R or a tongue, trill as Susannah. Herald talked about in her lesson lesson number seven and. I. Then, did puffy cheap roll bars. Someone. Sent me a question how do you do a puff ichiro bar well, I'm going to get closer to you now so be. Careful. So. A rolled R is just a flicking, of the tongue quickly, using. The support, the air to, keep that going so I'm my, tongues here just behind my, upper, teeth. Okay you. Can see that Oakley, so. That's what. What I want you, to do now is, to, find the ideal place where that roll bar happens so. What I'm gonna do is I'm going to show you and. Hopefully. You'll hear as well, I'm. Going to move my tongue forward and back and you'll, hopefully hear where the sweet spot is. So. Somewhere, in the middle probably, quite near the, ridge just behind your teeth, front, teeth oh yeah. You'll, feel, a sort of sweet spot and suddenly. The sound will resonate around your head in a way that it doesn't when it's too far back and doesn't when it's too far forward so. Find that and that's where we want our rolled after happen. Now, for a puffy cheap rolled up reason. We do a puffy cheek, it's. Because it changes, where that resonance, feels and it changes, where. The. Sort of sense of, air. Pressure is is spelt and. Therefore. It gives us a freedom, with the sound to. To. Explore, a different way. I'll. Go I'll go into that a bit more in a few minutes but. In order to do the puffy cheek rolled, are you. Do. The roll are you doing normally a little bit and then you relax your lips of it and then. You puff out your cheeks so, three stages I'm going to do one, two three. Okay. One, two three. You, got that one. Two. Slightly. Right slips put. Three. Puffy, cheek. Okay. A few, that good. Okay. So now, we can do a roll da and the puffy Chitra I want. To go into something that Susanna, Harrell asked. Me about in. Her lesson she, asked about how. To. Get the sense of space and. Resonance. At. The top of the voice when you're doing that role da. Before. We go into this it's very important, that the rolled R is not a pressed, pressurized. Sensation. So. I mean to find that roller again just, on that Ridge but, a little and, I, want you to press really hard but. Now. What you should feel, you might feel there's some tension, of it here maybe, a bit of tension here maybe, tension, in the tongue root and, also. Attention, a sort, of locking of the support, that's. Not what we're looking for in terms of the roll bar so, I want you to then find that place again that tenths, place but, in a little and. I want you to step back from it in terms of energy and, pressure and find. A sort of sweet spot if, you watch my lesson number six, you. Might remember I talked about ringing, a bell and that sort of ideal. Ring. If you hit it too hard it in the wrong place it doesn't sound right but, just a tiny bit in the right place and it will ring easily, so that's the sweet spot we want to find with, everything in singing but if. This man with that rolled are so. Start to hard but a little and, then soften a bit. Good. Got that no. One needs to do is to release when you stop. So. Get, really. Used to doing this every time you sing every time you stop singing release. My. Teacher, talks about a splat, this one a splat, breath. So. What I want you to do is have. This idea, that low. Down you can't quite see in the camera. Just. Releases, those lower, abdominals. Just. Above your legs everything releases. And it splats, out and the air comes in and all. Up, here feels like it releases and is relaxed and you're ready to start, that process of, supporting the, next sound, so. This, time I want you to do that easy relax. Brother and. When you stop I want you to splat release like. This. Okay. What. You might see is that actually not much is happening from. What's. In the screen, so. What I want you to picture is actually, my. Below. My chest, below, my diaphragm. In fact is where. All the support work is happening and where the release needs to take place and that. Will. Then kick into action to support the next sound. Okay. Now, back. To what Susana asked me she. Was talking about this. Feeling, of space high up on the rolled are and the. Fact that she found it easier in the middle of her voice now. Part of that mm-hmm, excuse. Me part of that for all singers is, is a connection. To, a. Sort. Of safety, place of resonance, what.

I Mean by that is is, an area in your physical, being where. You're most used to the sound, being. Made, and. The. Next step from that is. Areas. Where the voice is resonating. That. You aren't, used to resonating. And, before you feel a bit off. You, sort of knocked off your perch as it were. Now. This is an issue that we have when we go into different buildings. This. Is quite a sort of resonant little shed. At the end of my gun. Singing. In big cathedrals, or booming, churches, or a, bathroom and then. You go into a, room, with us of carpet, and. Big. Plush seats like a cinema, for example now. Singing in those places feels, different. Because. Our sense, of resonance. Changes. And where, the voice feels, like is the. Sounds being made. Now. It's true, that the. Middle of the voice, tends. To be where people are most used to that sound resonating. And and. The, spots, where that feels, like your sound is coming up is. It's. Something with most used to okay. That's. Clear good. When. You sing very high or when you sing very low the, sort of the core of the, resonating, place. Changes. What. I want you to do at home is to do a. Siren. Or a, slide. Of sound from. The middle of your voice as low as you can go and then. Back, up to the middle and then emphasize you can go very, soft a bit by this. Okay. Pause. The video there. In the middle pops deep and. I. Wouldn't. Used to have a go at that ready, pause. Have a go. Are. You back good, now. I want you to do that again and I want you to be really, aware of where, the, core of the, sound, feels, like it's resonating. So. What I want you to do is firstly. Want. To go down low and put your hand just lightly. On your chest and feel, how. That, resonance, and that buzz changes. As your. Sound comes, into the area and then. As you, go hi how, it sort of disappears, from there and I want you to draw a picture in your mind of where this the call of the sound is happening. Okay. I've, got that picture in my mind do. You want to have a go so. You do it now pause, the video and have a go yourself. Welcome. Back so. For me what. I feel, is when I go down lower my chest, buzz is a lot more and as, I slide. To a much higher place, to, the pulse disappears. Now. The slight issue in the rolls are and, going. High up although is that the feeling, of buzz is right here at the front of the mouth but actually, the core of where the note wants to resonate, is changing. Behind it, are. You with me still. Okay. So. You imagine here this. Is where it's tickling. Buzzing. There but. Actually the core of the, resonating, sound is, going, from here I'll be. Up there and back and back down. So. It's important, for us not to hold, the resonant resonating. Place where. The tongue is trilling, but. To be aware of, that core moving, as you, go up and down, one. Way to help that is to cover your ears okay that's something I did in my last lesson but. It really is a, way of not. Becoming, too attached to where the. Voice is buzzing. But. Actually, allowing. The. Freedom, of the, core, of the sound to move to. The most ideal place in your, sort. Of physical. Being, what. I'm going to do is some. Rolled off scales. I'm. Going to do seven. Or eight of them, and that I want you to pause the video and to, try those yourself okay. I'm. Going to covering. My ears, first. And then. Taking, it away and so. Do each. Scale twice just. For normal. Before. I go on it's. Not as weird that you're watching me do this as it, is that I'm singing to, affirm in my. Studio. On there so continue. With me. Splatt. Breath at the end okay. So. Between each scale, at, the end of each scale, I release, my breath ready. To go again. What. I find with that exercise is, that covering. My ears, helps. Me get used to the. Energy. And amount of breath I need to, get through each scale it. Also gets. My voice, ready. To. Know how much energy I need, and. Where. The, sudden buzz happens, going, up into the top voice and then.

When I take my hands away I just want to keep the same physical, sensation. And the, sound is, just. A sort of hopefully. Pleasant surprise okay. Now. What. You might find is actually when, you take your hands away that. The sound feels slightly different, to what you're used to when you're singing, as. I say that's partly, because we become attached to this one place where, the sound happens. And. Where it feels like it resonates, but. Actually. Allowing. It to be free and sort. Of open in different places will if you record your sound or even have someone else that are listening to you. Surprise, you as to how much it changes, and frees, up the sound you're making and. Gives you more options in, terms of how you want to then tell, a story and. Connect. And sing. With intention, as Tamara spoke about. Okay. The. Next exercise I'd like to do is opening. Up two vowels, but. Using, the rolled R but also another. Voiced, consonant, to set. Up the vowel and the. Connection. To your body are. You ready maybe. Everyone, have a little glass of water myself. It's. Been a long day okay. So. This is going to be five, note scale and, at. The top I want you to stop, there. And. Open. Up. Two vowel. And, then. Come down off. The scale back. To them to the first note on that vowel. Is. That clear. I didn't think so I will, sing it to you and then I'll. Let you have a go so, we're gonna start. Start. On a puffy. Cheek roll ah I may, need to do I told me how that again. Okay. So. What I'm going to do at, this time is, a puffy, cheap rod are one two three four five and, then, a. Frontal. Rolled are and then. In a an. Hour vow. Hold. The our bow and then. Take, the other valve down the other side. Splatt. Breath at the end release, okay. You. Give that a go maybe pause the video if you want and, have. A go. I'll. Give you a call before you start. Deep. Welcome. Back, now. What I want you to do is to try that one more time but. I want you to. Do. A longer, are on, the. Held note but, also I want you to think of it as not being held. Keeping. On the same note for a long time might. Look in a piece of music like you're holding one note. But. I want you to continue, that sense, of. Energy. And continued. Singing that we have doing a rolled our scale, and but. Through the one note. Maybe. Get. Your hand and I want you to spin your hand like this while. You're singing and I, want you to keep that hand going as you, sing the long note and I want you to picture it traveling, and. Give. That a go I'm going to do a semitone, higher. Release. It yeah good. The, reason for this is I want you to picture, and. Physically. Feel, how. The. Voice continues. To move. Sound. Without. Any energy does, not happen okay, we, need the energy of the, air to. Go. Through the vocal cords and to, create that sound, wave and if. You stop moving the sound will stop working, I'll. Try and do it wrong this time. Just. Hold the note and see what happens. It. Doesn't happen. Initially. You, just uses the last bit of breath and then. Just stops, completely that's, not what we want we want to be able to sing really long lines with. Energy and with the intention and the storytelling behind, them and, so. What I want you to do now is, a series, of these scales as many as you want, and. I. Want, you to sing that long note with as much energy as you can and for as long as you can I want. You to count how, many seconds, you do that top note and. Write down again in the, comments, how long you could hold that note for I'm. Going to do now just to show up let's see I'll.

Just Do 10 10 seconds. Okay. I'm. Sure, some of you can beat me have. A go. Good. So, you, had a go that and, the. Final thing I want to do in today's lesson is. Introducing. Voiced. Consonants. Now. Suzanna talked about this a bit and in, fact quite a few people in these lessons have talked about consonants, I want, to talk about very soft v. So. I'm going to come close again just show you a name. So. When. You do a V, just. A single V. It. Doesn't need much pressure to, sound in fact it only sort of tickles. The, lips together. Bottom. Lip on the. Upper, teeth. Then. All just make that sound there's. A connection to, the support so. We release but. Good. Now. That V is very useful. When. We want to have, a good. Start. To any phrase in, a piece of music, it's. Also good and exercises, in fact that exercise we just did is really good with a V. Okay, it's, a really very light touch that thee, but. It, does energizing. Connect, the. Support, to. Your voice again which is what we're looking for what. I want you to do is. Find a piece of music that you have this starts, with a vowel I've. Got one here here's. One I made earlier so, a beautiful, Bellini song and, it, starts with the letter e. And. When I practice, it to try and get that connection. Immediately. Sometimes. It's difficult with just about I put. A little, v. Just. Well I'm practicing. To. Get that connection to start. I'll. Show. You. So. The word is. One. More time with the idea of the v8 my head but without the V. What. I hope you heard is. That the V. Connects. The support and. Then. You. Have, immediately. A good, note, on that vowel. Did. You do that I'll. Try it one more time and. This, time I'm going to try and press it too much. Did. You hear that explosion. That's. Too much air that's too much pressure here that's. Not what we're looking for really, light does. The. Next phrasal search phrase also. Starts, with. MP. So, I'm gonna try that again practicing. That's. Good I'm happy with that progress, using, that like. V, so. Help, energize the, start of the phrase now, I'm going to try again to, do the wrong way. For. Me that exploded. And then, I felt tense going, through the phrase. So. Now I'm going to sing those two phrases together. With. The idea, of that's, soft, v starting, each phrase and. See. How I feel, about the, improvement hopefully in the last minute. Okay. So. I've. Spoken a lot for the last 20 minutes or so now. I want, you to have a go all those exercises hopefully.

You How to go through the lesson but. Now I also want you to think about some homework one, may get assessed well, I want, you to take that buzzy. V and, I want you to introduce that into some pieces of music you sing something, you've known for ages perhaps maybe a new piece you're learning I want, you to take it through, the piece I want to look at where. All the phrases start with vowels and I, want you to introduce that V into, your practice so. A few, times to the V a good V. Something. Like that connected, to your support and. Then. Sing the phrase and, have that. Energized, traveling. Phrase that we have doing. The exercise earlier in the lesson and then. I want you to take that v away but. Used. To have the benefit, of it okay. So. My last lesson I gave you homework about, to. Try using rolled R and to, cover your ears singing phrases, and this time I won't, have the the the like V, before.
