"The Great MKS Debate" "Good evening!" Male Announcer : In the modern society, people always have troubles with selecting pedals that suite themselves. Female Announcer : New models of pedals are increasing each year, but at the same time, people who cannot choose the right bike pedal for themselves are increasing. Male Announcer : That is correct. Tonight, we are holding the great MKS debate to decide, which pair of MKS pedal is needed the most in the modern society. Female Announcer : We will decide which model will be the MVP, Most Valuable Pedal in tonight's debate. Male Announcer : Now, this is a very sensitive topic.

It is not a topic that we could easily find the answer, so I am hoping that the viewers can think with us. Female Announcer : Now, let us introduce you to our debaters for this incredibly difficult topic! Debater no.1, Peak from the online store department. Peak is in charge of the Blue Lug online store. He is not a man with many words, so we all listen carefully to what he says when he opens his mouth. His favorite pedals are the RMX pedals. Debater no.2, Wentz. Although being 25 years old, he already has 9 years of experience as a bike mechanic.

He became a bike mechanic when he was only 16 years old, and he now works for Blue Lug Kamiuma. We are very eager to hear the words from the youngest debater in the studio. His favorite pedals are the "Gamma Pedals". Last but not least, Kaneyan.

He is an ex-bike messenger, single speed lover and the mechanic staff for Blue Lug Hatagaya. He loves and cherishes the things he believes in. Attention to his unique point of view! His favorite pedals are "Allways". And like always, Digi will be hosting the show. Digi : There are too many pedals in the market, so we narrowed down to 10 different models. We will debate and decide which model is the most valuable pedal of Blue Lug.

Are you guys ready? "Let's do this." Digi : Before we get in to the debate, I'd like to point out that I had the debaters to choose their personal favorite pedals before hand. Wentz, could you tell us about your favorite? Wentz : Sure. I am going with the "Gamma" pedals. Digi : Alright. I will ask the reason later.

What about you Peak? Peak : I'd have to go with the "RMX" Digi : Intersting... What about you Kaneyan? (laughing) Wentz : Damn it don't laugh. Kaneyan : I am going with "Allways". Digi : I see. Okay guys, get your cards up in front of you.

Could you guys explain why those are your favorite pedals? Wentz, why don't you go first? Wentz : Well, first of all I ride a Rivendell, and I have these pedals on it. So, there was a model called "Lambda", before the Gammas came out. And the Gamma is like the "brother" of the Lambda. The Lambda becomes a bit slippery in the rain and the Gamma kind of solved that problem with the added pins.

I also like the subtle reflector compared to the one on the Lambda. Digi : Okay, I see. Wentz : I also like the matte material. Digi : I see, I see. Great points Wentz! Alright Peak, let's hear from you. Why the RMX?

Peak : Well, It's hard to explain but, I simply like the way it looks. It's a very "practical" pedal, and I also like the "cheapness" of it. They're also great with sneakers. And you can get them whenever you want since they make a lot of these.

The bearings of these pedals are honestly not the best, but you can easily get a replacement anytime you want. Digi : They are very reasonable. Peak : Yes, that is the biggest reason why I like these pedals Digi : The guys over at Rivendell call these pedals, "Sneaker Pedals" right? Peak : That's right.

Digi : Why did you choose the Allways pedals, Kaneyan? Kaneyan : I like the name. *Holding a laugh* Kaneyan : You can really use these pedals in all conditions so I love them. Digi : Could you tell us more about the pedal? Kaneyan : So these are called platform pedals, or a flap pedal if you may.

They are full of openings, compared to BMX pedals, they are also pretty light and has a bunch of pins, so no matter what kind of shoes you have, you will not slip. Another thing is that they have sealed bearings. They spin very well, they're durable and they are extremely comfortable. It's totally a new form of platform pedals. I love them. Digi : Thank you all for sharing your thoughts.

We are not here to specifically talk about those three pedals, so let's make sure that we focus on the others too. Let's leave your personal favorites out of this conversation for now. If you were to put a pair of pedals to a freshly built bike for a customer, which pedal would you recommend? Digi : Let's start with you Kaneyan. Kaneyan : First up...I see... Digi : Didn't see it coming did ya? Kaneyan : Yes. You caught me off guard.

Well... Digi : I mean, if you think your favorite pedals are the answer to the question, go ahead and talk about that. Kaneyan : Sorry, but I always recommend the RMX... Digi : Okay...Why? Kaneyan : I mean, they're cute! Okay, I gotta go back to how I usually talk now.

They're just the perfect size, very reasonable and safe at night, because of the reflectors. The shape is very simple, and the ladies often say they are "Kawaii" and the dudes say they're "cool", so to me these are my go-to pedals when it comes to recommendations. Digi : I can relate to you. I never had a negative reaction from the customers for these pedals, in terms of the design. The others are a bit unique in the design, or a bit bulky in a way... If you look at Allways, they are very bulky and has a lot of pins, so some people may think they are a bit "aggressive" in a way.

Kaneyan : I heard that most of the BMXs in the 90s had these pedals...I think...? Digi : Great stuff Kaneyan. Okay, Wentz. I see that you like the Gamma,

but which pedals would you recommend to your customers who bought their first bike? Wentz : I think it really depends on what kind of bike, but for me, I think the Sylvan Touring has been my go-to recommendation pedals. Digi : I see, the classic huh? Wentz : I feel like it's one of those sauce that tastes good with everything. Kaneyan : There's many models in the "Sylvan" series. Stream, Touring, Road...there's a lot of them, but I feel like the square ones like the Stream or the Touring-

REALLY goes well with all kinds of bikes. I think they are the representation of a "classic bike pedal". Digi : Most of the pedals we have here are, double sided- I think that's also one of the important aspects of bike pedals for beginners.

What about you Peak? Which pedals would you choose for customers with their first bikes? Peak : I would honestly have to say the Sylvan Touring pedals are very beginner friendly. They blend in well with various types of bikes and they're pretty comfy. I'd say these are the best for first bikes. Digi : It literally says that they are "the classic touring pedal". If you just hear the word "touring" you might think that these pedals are only suitable for "that sort of bikes"- but they're actually great for all kinds of bikes. Kaneyan : Does the width of the pedals help support people with big feet? Digi : Honestly, I don't know because I have small feet but, does the size of your feet matter when choosing pedals? Kaneyan : If you think about putting your feet on clip-in pedals without cleats, it's actually very hard to pedal because your feet keeps slipping off, I wonder if people with big feet experience that feeling when stepping on flat pedals with smaller platform.

So, I guess it's better to have a decent width and length in the pedals that people with bigger feet. Digi : What do you guys think of the Sylvan Gordito by Crust, which is basically a chunkier version of the Sylvan Touring? Give me the first thing that comes to mind. Kaneyan : They're rad! Wentz : I have to say the the Gorditos might beat the regular Tourings. Digi : I see... I honestly thought that if the pedals have a bigger platform, it would be too bulky and would stand out too much, but that wasn't the case. It was still subtle in a way. It really makes sense that they went out of stock very fast.

Kaneyan : By looking at the pedals that were designed by people over seas like the Lambda and Gamma, they really pay attention to the length or the width of the platform. I had never seen pedals this long before. So I think they made the Gordito for those reasons. That's what I've been feeling these days... And then we have the XC-III.

They're round but they have a wider platform so I think they are very comfy pedals. *small panic* Digi : Do you guys want to talk about the odd-ball, Solution? Would you care to explain the features for these pedals Wentz? Wentz : First of all, one side of these pedals are just flat pedals. And the other side are clip-in pedals where you get a pair of cleats to clip your feet onto the pedals. This provides the riders to have more efficient pedaling, so most of the people who ride a long distance or people in the competitive side use these kind of pedals. Digi : What are your honest thoughts on those pedals? I was not into them to be honest.

I thought we should just buy each clip-in pedals and flat pedals at first, but I bought those Solution pedals anyway... They're SO GOOD. I wear sneakers to commute and cleats when I go on a ride. It's really a pain in the ass to switch pedals each time! So these pedals were a game changer for me. What about you guys?

Wentz : I gotta admit, these are really convenient. I sometimes ride on clip-in pedals with regular sneakers. One time, I slipped out of the pedals when it was raining and messed up the top tube of one of my bikes. Digi : I remember that. The to tube was dented. Wentz : Yeah...so...I really need these. Digi : They have a lot of color options so it's fun to choose! And they also have the triple-sealed-bearings.

The triple-sealed-bearings are often used in the pedals that are slightly expensive, because of its high performance bearings. Kaneyan : Also the durability. Digi : Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Okay, now let's look at things statistically. Could you tell us the sales report for the pedals Peak? Peak : Should I give you the top three? Digi : Sure! So, you got the top three best selling pedals for the pedals we have here? Peak : Yes. Top three.

Digi : I have no idea what it would look like. Peak : Let's start with number 3... Number 3 is the Sylvan Touring.

*surprised noises* Wentz : I did not expect that. Kaneyan : I thought it was number 1! Digi : Wait, are we talking about the recent top 3 or the top 3 of all time since Blue Lug's online store started? Peak : It's the top 3 of all time. Digi : Huh, that's interesting because we've had the Sylvan Touring from way back, and it's still the third? I can't imagine the top 2. Kaneyan : These other ones are killing it I guess. Digi : What's number 2 on the list? Peak : The RMX. *louder surprised noises* Digi : I guess it's the price and the simple design.

Wentz : Yeah, they are very approachable. Kaneyan : Interesting! Digi : It's very rude to be surprised but, it seems that our consumers don't mind having the normal bearings. Kaneyan : Also, we love the looks of these "dullness" of the RMXs and I thought beginners would be more into the Sylvan Touring- because of its simplicity and the classic style, but I guess that is not the case! Digi : I really can't predict what number 1 will be. Kaneyan : Yeah, I'm really confused. Peak : The number 1 seller would be the XC-III.

"WOOOOW" Wentz : This specific color? Peak : No, all together. Digi : Well, they do have a lot of color options. That makes kinda the sense if you think about it.

We were fortunate to design these pedals and we thankfully have been selling these to overseas a lot. And they are simply super cool. I've been recommending these pedals too much. Wentz : I mean you can't go wrong with these.

Kaneyan : I've been the devil's advocate and not recommending them so much lately. Digi : What? Kaneyan : Was that wrong for me to say? Digi : What do you recommend then? Kaneyan : Hmm, let's see... Digi : Allways? Kaneyan : I mean it really depends on the bike... Digi : Hold up, you and Wentz said "It depends on the bike", what do you mean by that? Could you maybe break down 2 or 3 types of bikes you're talking about? Kaneyan : Umm, bikes for riding on pavement- DIgi : Okay. Kaneyan : and off road...that's enough right?

Digi : Alright, let's talk about those two types. Which pedals would you choose for a on-road bike? Kaneyan : For on-road bikes, I would go with Sylvan Touring or the RMX. Wentz : Just like our statistics. Digi : What about off-road? Kaneyan : For off-road...*silently puts hand on XC-III* BUT, recently...*silently puts hands on Gamma*

Don't ask me about the Allways! Digi : I mean, that's your personal favorite so... Kaneyan : As Wentz mentioned before, the pins on these things are incredible. They're great for riding trail.

Digi : As Wentz has also mentioned, the Gammas are the 1 upped version of the Lambda. Wentz : The "Grip Monarch". Kaneyan : Is that like another way to call those pedals or something? Like, Lambda a.k.a.?? *some inside jokes that the translator cannot comprehend* Kaneyan : Could you please focus on the topic here!? Digi : Sorry. I'm enjoying this shoot way too much.

Wentz : Same here. Sorry. Digi : Think like this, Not everybody is going to go ride off-road everyday and not everybody is going to ride pavement everyday right? Some people would probably ask you if there are any pedals that are good for both right? Which pedals would you choose for them? Wentz : Good for both off and on road huh? Kaneyan : How bout this? This is good for both right? Wentz : I always ask the customers if they will ride in the rain. Digi : You're a nice man Wentz.

Wentz : If you're gonna ride in the rain, I would highly recommend getting the Gamma rather than the Lambda. Kaneyan : Those pins give a lot of grip you know? Wentz : However, I wouldn't recommend the Gamma for people who wears dress shoes. Kaneyan : Yeah, those pins will mess up leather shoes for sure.

I once put a piece of leather on top of the platform for a customer. Digi : I remember that!! Kaneyan : I thought leather wouldn't hurt leather and that customer was very into the idea so I did it. Five years later he came back to the shop, but the piece of leather wasn't there. Digi : I guess the rain got it. Hmm, tough decisions... Kaneyan : Wanna go ahead and choose one? Digi : Are there anything else you guys would like to share? Kaneyan : Nobody has said nothing about the "Urban Platform Pedals"!! Digi : Those are specifically for on-road right? "ONCHU!!" *a silly word that means extremely on-road that they made up on the spot* Wentz : I think these are only for "specific" riders.

Kaneyan : These pedals are amazing for fixies. I personally use the MTB version of the RX-1 which they used to make back in the day. The RX-1 have these gaps in the platform and they kind of hurt my feet when I have thin shoes on.

But if you look at the Urban Platform, they are really flat on the top so they're extremely comfy. Yeah, that's what I have to say. Wentz : I used these pedals before, and they were very easy to slip in my feet into the clips. Kaneyan : The kickbacks are amazing on those. Peak : I feel like almost every fixie riders choose these as their first pedals.

Kaneyan : They look super dope too. Digi : Yeah, I haven't seen them in a while but they do look cool Wentz : I love how the shape of the pedals are telling you to put on toe clips. Do you know what I'm saying? Kaneyan : I totally get it. Wentz : You can use them straight out the box. You need to install the toe clips and then they're ready to go. Digi : Let's talk about this one, while we're at it. These are NJS certified right? So MKS also manufactures NJS parts huh? Wentz : MKS are the only pedal maker who makes NJS pedals.

Digi : These pedals have better bearings than the triple-sealed-bearings right? These are individually handcrafted by the most experienced employees of MKS. I heard that each washers inside are all different. Kaneyan : Yup. Insane Wentz : It's the real deal. Digi : It's a bit expensive for urban rides, but some people do dream of using these pedals. Kaneyan : They don't break either.

Digi "Highpolished Alloy" huh? Wentz : Yeah, it's fully polished. I love those pedals. Digi : I think we need to choose the occasion for choosing "the best" pair of pedals, ya know? Wentz : Like I said, it really depends on what kind of bikes we're talking about when choosing pedals...

Digi : But we need to make a decision today! Kaneyan : Digi had a great point earlier. Digi : What? Kaneyan : You said something about being able to use in both off and on road. I think that's what we should be focusing on. Digi : Okay, let me sort this out. Let's choose the best pedals that are able to perform well on both on and off road, and a "beginner friendly". Are you guys ready? Kaneyan : No. Can we go with the elimination style?

Digi : Great point! But shut up. Peak : But he had a great point. Digi : Okay, how should we work this out. Wentz : Let's get rid of the pedals that are not great for both first. Digi : Okay, we'll go with that. Let's see...

Kaneyan : The Urban Platform is only for on-road so... Digi : They're great pedals! I hope you guys don't get the wrong idea! Wentz : It's just that I can't recommend these pedals to a person who just bought a bike today. Digi : Great point Wentz! Aright, what's next? Wentz : We gotta get rid of RX-1 don't we? Peak : True. Digi : I mean, this one is for Keirin riders! Wentz : I would only recommend these pedals, if the person is going to a Keirin track. Digi : Okay, so these two are off the list... Kaneyan : Could you actually take them off the list? Digi : You sure? Kaneyan : Let's do it! Digi : Okay, so these two were not the best for the conditions we have today.

Alright, what now? Wentz : I guess the Solution has to go, because I would only recommend these to people who knows how to use clip-in pedals Digi : Yeah, I wouldn't choose these pedals for people who just got into riding. Kaneyan : If the person is looking for clip-in pedals, I will for sure choose these for them. Digi : I feel like these pedals are like a step up from flat pedals.

Like I said, we're not saying that these pedals are "bad". I love these myself. Now we're down to 7. So the pins are an important feature according to our discussion- Kaneyan : And a bigger platform.

Digi : Then what do you think of this? It's the second best selling pedals but...? Do we have to get rid of it for today's viewpoint? Wentz : I guess if you think about going off-road, there is a better pair of pedals than the RMX. Kaneyan : If these pedals had pins...

Digi : The RMXP! That could be a thing. Kaneyan : Exactly. Digi : Alright. Goodbye RMX. But remember. These are the second top selling pedalsfrom our online store. Now what? Kaneyan : Sylvan Touring maybe? Digi : Yeah... Kaneyan : I feel like it's leaning against the on-road side.

Digi : They do say "touring" so yeah. These are our third top seller, but we have to say goodbye for this debate! *nervous laughter* Digi : Okay! Down to five! Wentz : I feel like the Lambda has to go, since the Gamma is already here. Digi : Yeah, the Gamma is the updated version of the Lambda, we gotta take it off the list. Okay, we're almost there! Kaneyan : I really don't want to do this to my favorite pair of pedals, but I think we need to eliminate the Allways pedals.

Digi : Oh yeah, Wentz and Kaneyan's favorites are still here! Kaneyan : I feel like the Allways looks too bulky and aggressive for bikes with thinner tires.. It truly hurts my heart to say this but I think the Allways has to go... Digi : Do you two agree? Wentz : Hmmm, I guess so? Peak : If Kaneyan says so... Wentz : Yes, I respect his opinion. Digi : Goodbye Allways pedals.

Wentz : Now I feel like the Gammas are the same with Allways... Digi : Really? How do you feel? Kaneyan : I choose them for bikes with 32C tires. I wouldn't choose Allways for bikes with 32C tires.

Digi : I see that you pay attention to those kind of details. What about putting the Sylvan Gordito on 32C road bikes? Kaneyan : I'm with it. But the XC-III? Nah. Digi : Everybody has the same opinion for the XC-III pedals huh? Wentz : Yeah those are for MTBs. Digi : But it doesn't mean you shouldn't put them on bikes for urban riding right? "That's right" Digi : So it's really your personal preference? Wentz : It just looks better in the mud.

Digi : Great point! Although the XC-III are the top seller pedals of Blue Lug, it has to go for this debate. Oh! Go check out the new color way of these pedals online! Alright! Down to two! What do ya'll think?? We're almost there. Let's finish this. Which is the Most Valuable Pedals!? Kaneyan : "mOsT vAluaBle PeDaL" Digi : Let's choose the MVP! Kaneyan : I think the Gordito has to be eliminated since it has no pins. We agreed that the MVP should have pins in the earlier discussion. What do you guys think? Digi : Yeah, we mentioned about the rain. Kaneyan : But then again the big platforms of the Gorditos are super nice! Digi : Also suitable for off-road eh? Kaneyan : Sort of...

In the rain...it looks like it would be a bit slippery... Digi : But it's wide so you can still pedal in the rain. Kaneyan : You're kind of right... Wentz : This is hard.

"Damn, it is tough." Digi : C'mon guys let's make the decision already! Kaneyan : Uggghhh it's a very tough decision. Digi : Do you guys wanna go on a commercial break? Wentz : We should totally do an MKS commercial. Digi : No. We gotta conclude this debate. The viewers are probably tired of waiting! Kaneyan : Can't we just choose these two!? Digi : No, that's not possible. Wentz : Can I bring my personal opinion into this? Digi : Go for it. We need it.

Wentz : We gotta pay our respects to Grant Peterson. Digi : We're not talking smack about Matt, just to be sure! Kaneyan : Matt was very inspired by Grant so it makes sense! Wentz : Grant is Matt's hero! Digi : Very great points! Would you guys agree? "Sure." Digi : It was a long long debate but here we are with the Most Valuable Pedal!! Give it up for the Gamma Pedals! Digi : Go back and watch the video if you want to know why. Good thing we were able to narrow it down to one! Wentz : This is just based on us.

Digi : Like Kaneyan said, we choose different pedals depending on the type of the bike you are riding. This doesn't mean that the Gamma is the best of all time. It is just based on our thoughts for today. Wentz : In fact, there are bikes that do not look good with these pedals. Digi : That's totally right! Wentz is killing it today! Anyway, I hope this video will help you guys choose your pedals wisely.

Wentz : If you are wondering why we're dressed like this, go look up "Asa made nama TV". It's a TV debate show from before I was born right? Peak : It still exists! Wentz : I guess I was wrong! Kaneyan : Yup, it's still a running program. Digi was throwing some references here and there. Digi : I didn't say "Shut up" without a reason.

Anyway, thank you guys for attending this debate. Man, it's already 6 in the morning. Kaneyan : Gotta go back to the crib and shower. And then comeback to work. Wentz : It's a joke by the way. "Arigatogozaimasu"
